Abstract:We report superconductor and transport properties of a large class of tetragonal 1:2:3 cuprates represented by the chemical formula (Ca{sub {ital x}R}{sub 1{minus}{ital x}})[Ba{sub 3{minus}}{ital z}{minus}{ital x}{ital R}{sub {ital z}}{minus}(1{minus}{ital x})]Cu{sub 3}O{sub {ital y}}, where {ital R}=La or Nd and existing as high-purity materials in a large range of {ital z} and {ital x}. At a given {ital z}, these materials maintain, through compensating cosubstitutions, a constant charge {ital Q} of the noncopper cations ({ital Q}=6+{ital z}) {ital independent} {ital of} {ital x}. By accurate control of oxygen content {ital y}, both cation and anion charge sources were kept constant. Under these isoelectronic conditions (constant electron concentration {ital n}) big changes in transition temperature {ital T}{sub {ital c}}, resistivity {rho} and thermopower (TEP) {ital S} occur, suggesting that the microscopic hole density in the CuO{sub 2} planes {ital h} changes. Having a single {ital T}{sub {ital c}}{sup max} (maximal {ital T}{sub {ital c}}), this material family behaves as a single material. Besides, for all values of {ital Q}, {ital x}, and {ital y} and for each {ital R} we show that {ital T}{sub {ital c}}, {rho}, and {ital S} can each be represented by a single curve when plotted asmore » a function of {ital y}{minus}{ital y}{sub M-I}({ital Q},{ital x}), where {ital y}{sub M-I} denotes the value of {ital y} at the metal-insulator (M-I) transition. Therefore, there exists a one to one correspondence between {ital h} and {ital y}{minus}{ital y}{sub M-I}, but there is no straightforward relation between {ital h} and {ital n}. We found an empirical formula describing the functional dependence of {ital y}{sub M-I} on {ital Q} and {ital x}. Our results are interpreted in terms of a simple band picture which is modified to consider the existence of low-mobility states in the vicinity of {ital E}{sub {ital F}}.« less
