Abstract:Three organic dyes 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines [2,6-(2,6-R2C6H2N=CMe)(2)]C5H3N (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl) (named DM, DE and DP, respectively) were synthesized and assembled onto nanocrystalline TiO2 film to prepare 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridine/N719 co-sensitized photoelectrodes for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs) applications, and their photoelectrochemical performances were studied. In each of the three composite electrodes, the aggregation of N719 was alleviated and its spectra response was enhanced by the 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridines in region of 400 to 750 nm, and the total resistance of DSSCs was decreased after co-sensitizing with 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl) pyridine, all of which facilitate to improve efficiency of DSSCs. The optimized cell which was co-sensitized with DM gave a short circuit current density of 16.57 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage of 0.72 V and a fill factor of 0.59 corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 7.00% under standard global AM1.5 solar irradiation conditions, which is 28.91% higher than that for DSSCs only sensitized by N719 (5.43%). The incident photo-to-current conversion efficiency, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, surface photovoltage spectroscopy and UV-visible adsorption spectra were used to analyze their photoelectrochemical performances, and X-ray single-crystal structural analysis was used to analyze the structures of 2,6-bis(iminoalkyl)pyridines.
Dye-sensitized photoanode decorated with pyridine additives for efficient solar water oxidation

Abstract:Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen by dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell (DSPEC) is a promising approach to solar fuels production. In this study, a series of pyridine derivatives as surface additives were modified on a molecular chromophore and water oxidation catalyst co-loaded TiO2 photoanode, TiO2|RuP, 1 (RuP = Ru(4,4′-(PO3H2)2-2,2′-bipyridine)(2,2′-bipyridine)2, 1 = Ru(bda)(L)2, (bda = 2,2′-bipyridine-6,6′-dicarboxylate, L = 10-(pyridin-4-yloxy)decyl)phosphonic acid). The addition of pyridine additives was found to result in up to 42% increase in photocurrent. Under simulated sun-light irradiation, TiO2|RuP, 1, P1 (P1 = 4-Hydroxypyridine) produced a photocurrent density of 1 mA/cm2 at a bias of 0.4 V vs. NHE in acetate buffer. Moreover, the observed photocurrents are correlated with the electron-donating ability of the substituent groups on pyridine ring. Transient absorption measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that surface-bound pyridine can effectively retard the back-electron transfer from the TiO2 conduction band to the oxidized dye, which is a major process responsible for energy loss in DSPECs.Surface modification of pyridine on dye-sensitized TiO2 photoanode leads to improved photocurrent due to a role of pyridine molecule on retarding charge recombination at the electrode surface.

Abstract:Pure organic dye QAP-C8 based on quinacridone (QA) with octyl side chains as the donor and pyridine dicarboxylic acid (PDA) as the acceptor was first used in both the photoanode and the photocathode of photoelectrochemical cells. A tandem device with QAP-C8 as the photosensitizer realized overall water splitting and showed a STH of 0.11% under neutral pH conditions without an external bias.

Abstract:Significance Artificial photosynthetic systems use molecular light absorbers to convert sunlight into useful chemical fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, or ammonia. A key bottleneck in these systems is the oxidation of water to produce O 2 . This anodic reaction occurs under strongly oxidizing conditions that result in damage to organic dyes, electron relays, and catalyst molecules. Here we show that encapsulation of the molecular components of a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell by a 2-nm-thick coating of TiO 2 dramatically improves cell stability under water-splitting conditions. The physical separation of the dye from the solution in which the water-splitting reaction takes place enables the use of dyes that efficiently absorb in the visible and allows optimization of the pH of catalytic water oxidation.

Abstract:Anchoring groups play an important role in the assembly of functional molecules onto semiconductor substrates for the purpose of dye‐sensitized photocatalysis. In addition to directly influencing the adsorption stability, the anchoring group significantly impacts the efficiency of electron or hole injection into the substrate, which is a crucial step of interfacial photocatalytic reactions. Most reported dye‐sensitized photocatalytic systems, including semiconductor nanoparticles and photoelectrochemical cells, are prepared using the carboxylic or phosphonic anchors. The systems prepared with these conventional anchors usually suffer from low adsorption stability in aqueous media. Alternatively, pyridine has emerged as an anchoring group of photosensitizers and molecular catalysts in the construction of photocatalytic systems. The resulting semiconductor nanoparticles and photoelectrodes show superior adsorption stability in practice in aqueous media, providing a simple and efficient way to sensitize the metal or metal oxide substrate. This review focuses especially on the recent advances of such a pyridine anchoring strategy in the assembly of photosensitizers and molecular catalysts for photocatalytic applications, in particular photocatalytic water oxidation, reduction, and splitting. The further exploration and understanding of the pyridine‐anchoring method are believed to boost the development of advanced dye‐sensitized photocatalytic devices and technologies.

Abstract:Stabilized photoanodes for light-driven water oxidation have been prepared on nanoparticle core/shell electrodes with surface-stabilized donor-acceptor chromophores, a water oxidation catalyst, and an electron-transfer mediator. For the electrode, fluorine-doped tin oxide FTO|SnO2/TiO2|-Org1-|1.1 nm Al2O3|-RuP2+-WOC (water oxidation catalyst) with Org1 (1-cyano-2-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)vinyl)phosphonic acid), the mediator RuP2+ ([Ru(4,4-(PO3H2)2-2,2-bipyridine)(2,2-bipyridine)2]2+), and the WOC, Ru(bda)(py(CH2)(3or10)P(O3H)2)2 (bda is 2,2-bipyridine-6,6-dicarboxylate with x = 3 or 10), solar excitation resulted in photocurrents of ∼500 µA/cm2 and quantitative O2 evolution at pH 4.65. Related results were obtained for other Ru(II) polypyridyl mediators. For the organic dye PP (5-(4-(dihydroxyphosphoryl)phenyl)-10,15,20-Tris(mesityl)porphyrin), solar water oxidation occurred with a driving force near 0 V.
Self-Assembled Chromophore–Catalyst Bilayer for Water Oxidation in a Dye-Sensitized Photoelectrosynthesis Cell

Abstract:A new approach is described here for the preparation of water-oxidation photoanodes in a dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell for water splitting. It is based on a chromophore (C)–catalyst (Cat) assembly prepared by a self-assembled bilayer on a mesoporous SnO2/TiO2 core/shell electrode, FTO|SnO2/TiO2|-C–Cat. A key feature in the resulting assembly is the in situ "synthesis" by utilization of noncovalent interactions between long alkyl substituents of the chromophore and catalyst components. The photoanode carries out photoelectrochemical water oxidation for more than 3 h with ∼86% faradaic efficiency for oxygen generation. At pH 7 under 1 sun illumination, the photoanode reaches a photocurrent density of ∼2.2 mA/cm2 with an incident photon to current efficiency of 29% at 450 nm. With an injection yield of only ∼42%, the efficiency of the cell, excluding the losses at the core/shell interface, is a remarkable 67%.

Abstract:Abstract If generated from water using renewable energy, hydrogen could serve as a carbon-zero, environmentally benign fuel to meet the needs of modern society. Photoelectrochemical cells integrate the absorption and conversion of solar energy and chemical catalysis for the generation of high value products. Tandem photoelectrochemical devices have demonstrated impressive solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiencies but have not become economically relevant due to high production cost. Dye-sensitized solar cells, those based on a monolayer of molecular dye adsorbed to a high surface area, optically transparent semiconductor electrode, offer a possible route to realizing tandem photochemical systems for H 2 production by water photolysis with lower overall material and processing costs. This review addresses the design and materials important to the development of tandem dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells for solar H 2 production and highlights current published reports detailing systems capable of spontaneous H 2 formation from water using only dye-sensitized interfaces for light capture.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding and controlling the properties of water-splitting assemblies in dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cells is a key to the exploitation of their properties. We demonstrate here that, following surface loading of a [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) chromophore on nanoparticle electrodes, addition of the molecular catalysts, Ru(bda)(L) 2 (bda = 2,2′-bipyridine-6,6′-dicarboxylate) with phosphonate or pyridyl sites for water oxidation, gives surfaces with a 5:1 chromophore to catalyst ratio. Addition of the surface-bound phosphonate derivatives with L = 4-pyridyl phosphonic acid or diethyl 3-(pyridin-4-yloxy)decyl-phosphonic acid, leads to well-defined surfaces but, following oxidation to Ru(III), they undergo facile, on-surface dimerization to give surface-bound, oxo-bridged dimers. The dimers have a diminished reactivity toward water oxidation compared to related monomers in solution. By contrast, immobilization of the Ru-bda catalyst on TiO 2 with the 4,4′-dipyridyl anchoring ligand can maintain the monomeric structure of catalyst and gives relatively stable photoanodes with photocurrents that reach to 1.7 mA cm −2 with an optimized, applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.5%.

Abstract:Donor−π bridge–acceptor (D−π–A) organic dyes, well studied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), are found to possess great potential in light-inducing hydrogen evolution due to their distinguished light-harvesting ability and suitable electron energy level. In this work, multicarbazole-based organic dyes (2C, 3C, 4C) were used as photosensitizers of Pt/TiO2 for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) from water under visible light irradiation. 3C-Pt/TiO2 shows the best photocatalytic activity among the three dye-sensitized photocatalysts, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 24.7 μmol h–1 and a turnover number of 247 h–1. The activity of 3C-Pt/TiO2 declines significantly after 3 h irradiation. The deactivation was caused by the partial degradation of the electron acceptor, cyanoacrylate moiety, during the photocatalytic process, which was evidenced by UV–vis, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), NMR, and mass spectra. This work is expected to contribute toward the understanding of stability issues of organic dyes and the development of more efficient and steady dyes for hydrogen evolution from water splitting.

Abstract:Polymer donors and non-fullerene acceptors have played an important role as photoactive materials in the development of high-efficiency organic solar cells, and they have immense potential for photoelectrochemical generation of solar fuels such as green hydrogen. However, their use in water-splitting photoelectrodes has been limited by their instability in aqueous environment and recombination losses at the interface with catalysts. Herein, PM6:D18:L8-BO organic photoanodes are presented reaching high photocurrent density over 25 mA cm-2 at +1.23 VRHE and unprecedented, days-long operational stability under solar illumination. This photoelectrochemical performance was achieved by protecting the photoactive layer by a graphite sheet functionalized with earth-abundant NiFeOOH water oxidation catalyst, providing both water resistance and electrical connection between the catalyst and the photoactive layer without any losses. This strategy also enables unassisted solar water splitting with solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 5% by monolithic tandem organic photoanodes with PM6:D18:L8-BO and PTQ10:GS-ISO photoactive layers. These results pave the way towards high-efficiency, stable and unassisted hydrogen generation by low-cost organic photoelectrochemical cells.

Abstract:Photopotentials (EL) of aqueous solutions containing xanthene dyes (as photoabsorber, PS) and electron donors (D) were measured in a photogalvanic cell with a tin dioxide (SnO2) working electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode (SCE), and compared with the hydrogen electrode potential (EH+H2) under the same pH conditions. It was found that EL>EH+H2 is crucial for solar-induced hydrogen production. The EL value of an aqueous solution containing erythrosine (TIF) and triethanolamine (TEOA) can reach 1000 mV and the rate of hydrogen production from this system is the highest of the seven investigated PS-D systems. An industrial pollutant is used to replace TEOA in the TIF—TEOA system for solar-induced hydrogen production.
Double‐Anchored Triphenylamine‐Fluorene Functionalized Dyes for High‐Performance Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:Two novel metal‐free organic dyes, namely the mono‐anchoring KMT1 and di‐anchoring KMT2 dyes, have been synthesized to function as photosensitizers for utilizing in photocatalytic hydrogen production systems. They adopt the donor‐donor‐π‐acceptor and donor‐donor‐(‐π‐acceptor)2 configurations, respectively, featuring triphenylamine and fluorene moieties as electron donors, thiophene as the π‐bridges and cyanoacrylic acid as the acceptors/anchoring groups. It was found that the photocatalytic performance of the di‐anchoring dye significantly outperforms that of its mono‐anchoring counterpart. KMT2‐based photocatalytic system demonstrated remarkable performance, producing 3520 μmol (84.9 mL) of hydrogen over a span of 257 hours under blue light irradiation, with a turnover number (TON) of 56300, a turnover frequency (TOFi) of 1862.7 h‐1, an initial hydrogen production activity (activityi) of 1164180 and an apparent quantum yield (AQYi%) of 19.9. This performance is among the top‐tier when compared to other dyes used in similar photocatalytic systems. The results clearly illustrate that the di‐anchoring dye possesses several advantages, including a broad absorption spectrum, higher absorptivity, and a relatively slower charge recombination rate. These attributes collectively contribute to its superior overall performance in photocatalysis.

Abstract:In conventional photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell for solar water splitting, its solar-to-hydrogen efficiency is limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution on its photoanode. 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid (3-PA) is an important organic in industry, but there are several disadvantages in its conventional synthesis approaches. Here, we reported that the oxidation of 3-methylpyridine (3-MP) into 3-PA as an alternative to the oxygen evolution on WO3 photoanode for improving the hydrogen-evolution efficiency and the product added-value of PEC cell. In a WO3 film photoanode-based dual-chamber PEC cell, 3-PA and hydrogen were simultaneously synthetized. Since the oxidation of 3-MP into 3-PA is more thermodynamically and kinetically favorable than water oxidation, higher efficiency of hydrogen evolution was achieved in the PEC cell with function of 3-PA synthesis relative to the conventional PEC cell for water splitting. Our investigations indicated that the oxidation of 3-MP into 3-PA on WO3 photoanode is co-initiated by the photogenerated holes and the H2O2 intermediate that originated from two-holes pathway of solar water oxidation on WO3. Additionally, the Cr2O72-/Cr3+ redox pair could mediate and promote the oxidation of 3-MP into 3-PA on WO3 photoanode, and thus the PEC efficiency of 3-PA synthesis can be improved by adding Cr3+ into the H2SO4-3-MP electrolyte. Abstract:In photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, selective oxidation of organic substrates coupled with hydrogen evolution represents a promising approach for value-added chemical production and solar energy conversion. In this study, we report on PEC epoxidation of alkenes at a ruthenium dye-sensitized photoanode in a CH3CN/H2O mixed solvent with LiBr as a mediator and water as the oxygen source. The dye-sensitized photoanode was found to exhibit significant advantages in the simultaneous improvement of charge separation and suppression of charge recombination. First, LiBr as a redox mediator plays a critical role in charge separation, leading to an excellent excited electron injection efficiency of 95% and a high dye regeneration efficiency of 87%. Second, the predominant charge recombination pathway on the dye-sensitized photoanode is efficiently blocked by the reaction between alkene and the in situ generated bromine oxidant. As a result, the current system achieved a remarkable photocurrent density of over 4 mA cm-2 with a record-high incident photo-to-current efficiency (IPCE) of 51% and extraordinary selectivity of up to 99% for the epoxidation of a wide range of alkenes. Meanwhile, nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution was obtained. The performance shown here exceeds that obtained by metal oxide-based semiconductor photoanodes under comparable conditions, demonstrating the great potential of dye-sensitized photoelectrodes for organic synthesis owing to their diversity and tunability.
Inverse Opal CuCrO2 Photocathodes for H2 Production Using Organic Dyes and a Molecular Ni Catalyst

Abstract:Dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical (DSPEC) cells are an emerging approach to producing solar fuels. The recent development of delafossite CuCrO2 as a p-type semiconductor has enabled H2 generation through the coassembly of catalyst and dye components. Here, we present a CuCrO2 electrode based on a high-surface-area inverse opal (IO) architecture with benchmark performance in DSPEC H2 generation. Coimmobilization of a phosphonated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP-P) or perylene monoimide (PMI-P) dye with a phosphonated molecular Ni catalyst (NiP) demonstrates the ability of IO-CuCrO2 to photogenerate H2. A positive photocurrent onset potential of approximately +0.8 V vs RHE was achieved with these photocathodes. The DPP-P-based photoelectrodes delivered photocurrents of -18 μA cm-2 and generated 160 ± 24 nmol of H2 cm-2, whereas the PMI-P-based photocathodes displayed higher photocurrents of -25 μA cm-2 and produced 215 ± 10 nmol of H2 cm-2 at 0.0 V vs RHE over the course of 2 h under visible light illumination (100 mW cm-2, AM 1.5G, λ > 420 nm, 25 °C). The high performance of the PMI-constructed system is attributed to the well-suited molecular structure and photophysical properties for p-type sensitization. These precious-metal-free photocathodes highlight the benefits of using bespoke IO-CuCrO2 electrodes as well as the important role of the molecular dye structure in DSPEC fuel synthesis.
