Abstract:Organic semiconductors provide significant potentials for the construction of photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for solar hydrogen production because of their highly tunable properties. Herein, on carbon fiber paper (CFP) surface, pyridyl (Py), and 4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium (Py2+) groups were introduced into polythiophene (pTH) semiconductor by electrochemical copolymerization, respectively. After assembly with the Co(dmgBF2)2 type catalyst (CoB, dmgBF2 = difluoroboryldimethylglyoximate), the CoB@Py2+-pTH/CFP photocathode displayed nearly twice the photocurrent enhancement (550 μA cm-2 at 0.15 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) comparing to that generated by the CoB@Py-pTH/CFP photocathode (290 μA cm-2 at 0.15 V vs RHE) for light-driven H2 generation under AM 1.5 solar illumination. Investigation of the mechanism revealed that the introduction of the positively charged pyridinium groups could improve the intrinsic Co(dmgBF2)2 catalyst activity for the H2 generation reaction. Meanwhile, the positively charged pyridinium groups serve as p-type dopants to increase the semiconductor bulk charge transfer rate and act as electron transfer mediators to promote the interfacial charge transfer kinetics between the catalyst and the pTH-based organic semiconductor.
A (001) Dominated Conjugated Polymer with High-Performance of Hydrogen Evolution under Solar Light Irradiation

Abstract:Organic semiconductors for photocatalytic application have received wide attention recently. However, developing organic photocatalysts for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is a great challenge. Herein, we show highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from a series of novel conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) by modulating their interaction with co-catalysts. The water-soluble CPEs greatly enhance the photocatalytic performance with 50-fold improvement over that of their non-dissolved precursor conjugated polymer. More importantly, the photocatalytic activity of these CPEs can be optimized by regulating their interaction with Pt co-catalysts through molecular engineering on the side chain species and counterions of CPEs. The cationic CPEs perform better than anionic CPEs due to the robust interaction between quaternary ammonium side chains in cationic CPEs and Pt co-catalysts. It is found that the optimized interface contact between cationic CPEs and Pt co-catalysts can result in more efficient charge transfer and higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been widely used as photocatalysts for water splitting to produce hydrogen. Proper CMP structure design is a key factor for enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, we report two pyrene and 2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), TzSPy and TzPy, which were synthesized via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura polymerization. The integration of pyrene with triazine resulted in continuous electron donor-acceptor systems with high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Although the 1,6-linked TzSPy skeleton possesses a larger torsional angle compared to the 2,7-linked TzPy, it has a higher degree of conjugation and, consequently, can absorb visible light across a broader wavelength range. TzSPy and TzPy exhibited surprising hydrogen evolution rates (HER) of 10.3 mmol g-1 h-1 and 6.93 mmol g-1 h-1, respectively, under simulated sunlight (AM1.5G). DFT calculations and the experimental results of additional four groups of pyrene-based CMPs supported our conclusions that the 1,6-substituted pyrene-based CMPs possess a greater degree of conjugation compared to 2,7-substituted pyrene-based CMPs and thus demonstrate a higher photocatalytic activity.

The chemicals tructures and their influence on the absorption spectrum, energy level, free energy of hydrogen adsorption and photocatalytic performance of the material were systematically studied. The results showed that the conjugated polymer P7O-4N having a 3 , 6-bis( thien-2-yl ) -1 , 2 , 4 , 5-tetrazine structure showed stronger inter-chain aggregation, lower hydrogen bonding free energy , and better photocatalytic hydrogen production performance than polymer P7O-2N-2N with 2 , 5-bis( thiazole-2-yl )-pyrazide structure.

Abstract:The performance of donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymer-based photocatalyts for solar hydrogen production is severely limited by poor charge mobility and weak reactive sites. Here, a series of D-A conjugated polymers with electronegative fluorine atoms on the backbone is presented and the influence of fluorination on charge transfer and catalytic site activity is investigated. Theoretical calculation reveals that sequential fluorination on the A unit benzothiadiazole will activate the catalytic site, and the photocatalytic H-2 generation process could be illustrated by a proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism. Two series of fluorinated polymers were synthesized, and accelerated charge transfer was also verified. Among them, linear B-FOBT-1,4-E and porous B-FOBT-1,3,5-E with simultaneous electron-donating CH3O- and electron-withdrawing F-substitution show a H-2 evolution rate that is 3.1 and 28.8 times higher than that of nonfluorinated counterparts, respectively, and the apparent quantum yield of 5.7% at 420 nm is obtained for B-FOBT-1,4-E. The results provide reciprocal understanding of the activation nature of substituent-regulating polymers.

Abstract:Conjugated polymer photocatalysts have received extensive attention in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution owing to their tunable molecular structures and electronic properties. Herein, we developed three donor-acceptor (D-A) type thiophene-containing narrow-band-gap conjugated polymers with pyrene as a donor and different fused-thiophene derivatives as acceptors via direct C-H arylation coupling polymerization. It was found that the band gap of the polymers can be tuned by adjusting the number of the fused-thiophene rings. The visible light absorption range can be extended by increasing the number of the thiophene rings, the planar molecular structure for both donor and acceptor units facilitates the charge transmission along the polymer skeleton, and the D-A type polymer structure promotes the dissociation of photo-induced electrons and holes. As a result, a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 33.07 mmolh−1 g−1 was obtained by PyTP-2 with an optimized molecular structure under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) without the aid of Pt co-catalyst. In addition, PyTP-2 also shows a photocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution with an average oxygen evolution rate of 58.37 µmolh−1 g−1.

Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated organic polymers exhibited great potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to their diverse synthetic approaches, tunable energy band, and electronic structure. But the poor dispersion of most conjugated organic polymers limited their photocatalytic performance. Herein, we designed and developed a series of D-A type conjugated organic polymers with benzene as the donor and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) with different side chains on N sites as the acceptor. We changed the length of the side chain and further introduced oxygen atoms on side chains. As a result, the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of PDPP3B-O4 with a short butoxy chain as the side chain was 5.53 mmol h(-1) g(-1) with 1 wt% Pt loading (lambda > 400 nm), which increased 110 times compared to PDPP3B-C8 with a long octyl chain. All polymers showed outstanding photocatalytic stability. Notably, an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 5.7% at 450 nm was achieved by PDPP3B-O4, and even a still high AQY of 1.13% at 600 nm was obtained due to its excellent light capture capability. PDPP3B-O4 showed a superior photocatalytic performance because of the wider absorption spectrum and better wettability via side chain engineering.
Molecular Engineering of Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Polymer/g‐C3N4 Heterostructures for Significantly Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution under Visible‐Light Irradiation

Abstract:Polymer heterojunctions (PHJs) have emerged as promising photocatalysts for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). Nevertheless, most PHJs exhibit unsatisfactory hydrogen evolution rate (HER), primarily attributing to their own high‐energy Frenkel excitons and poor light capturing ability. In this paper, a molecular engineering strategy is developed to further broaden spectral response range and simultaneously accelerate Frenkel excitons dissociation within PHJs. For this purpose, three donor–acceptor (D‐A) conjugated polymers/g‐C3N4 heterojunctions with alternative donor units (fluorene, carbazole, N‐annulated perylene for P1, P2, and P3, respectively) and the invariant acceptor unit (benzothiadiazole) have been designed and fabricated for efficient PHE. Experimental results show that copolymerizing different donor units into the polymer skeleton not only extends the visible‐light response range but also promotes photoexciton separation within polymer/g‐C3N4 PHJs. Notably, copolymerizing the strongest electron donor unit (N‐annulated perylene) achieves the best light capture ability and the most effective photoexcitation separation of the P3/g‐C3N4, leading to significantly increase HRE of 13.0 mmol h−1 g−1 with a recorded apparent quantum yield of 27.32% at 520 nm. Importantly, the Type II heterojunction mechanism within P3/CN was first proved by theoretical calculation. This work provides a promising strategy for reasonably developing efficient PHJs for solar fuel production.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis is a chemical process that aims to capture energy from sunlight to produce solar fuels. Light absorption by a robust and efficient photosensitizer is one of the key steps in solar energy conversion. However, common photosensitizers, including [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (RuP), remain far from the ideal. In this work, we exploited the performance of conjugated polymers (CPs) as photosensitizers in photodriven hydrogen evolution in aqueous solution (pH 6). Interestingly, CPs, such as poly(fluorene- co-phenylene) derivative (429 mmolH2·gCP-1·h-1), exhibit steady and high reactivity toward hydrogen evolution; this performance can rival that of a phosphonated RuP under the same conditions, indicating that CPs are promising metal-free photosensitizers for future applications in photocatalysis.
Conjugated Polymers with Oligoethylene Glycol Side Chains for Improved Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are emerging as promising organic photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from water. However, it is still very challenging for conjugated polymers to realize highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient strategy of hydrophilic side chain functionalization to boost the hydrogen evolution rates of conjugated polymers. By functionalizing conjugated polymers with hydrophilic oligo (ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (OEG) side chains, a 90-fold improvement in hydrogen evolution rate has been achieved than that of alkyl-functionalized conjugated polymer. It is found that the OEG side chains interact robustly with Pt co-catalysts, resulting in more efficient charge transfer. Moreover, OEG side chains in conjugated polymers can adsorb H+ from water, resulting in significantly lowered energy levels on the surfaces of conjugated polymers, which enables cascade energy levels and enhances charge separation and photocatalytic performance. Our results indicate that rational side-chain engineering could facilitate the design of improved organic photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water has recently drawn tremendous attention and stimulated extensive efforts in the design of high-performance photocatalysts. Here, we designed a series of porphyrin-based conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with different coordinated metals for the efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The polar side chains in these CPEs allow the formation of nanoscale aggregates in water for photocatalysis. The central metals (Ni, Cu, and Pt) incorporated into the porphyrin units greatly alter the electronic properties and photocatalytic performance of CPEs, marking them as distinct from metal-free CPEs. The Pt atom incorporated into CPEs efficiently induces exciton generation, reduces charge transfer resistance, and enhances the interaction between the CPEs and the co-catalysts and water. Consequently, PPF-Pt-Br enables efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of up to 5.39 mmol g(-1) h(-1) without the assistance of co-catalysts and 37.9 mmol g(-1) h(-1) with co-catalysts, which is much higher than the capacity of other CPEs. This study provides a novel strategy to improve photocatalytic efficiency by optimizing the chemical structure of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers (CPs) as photocatalysts have evoked substantial interest. Their geometries and physical (e.g., chemical and thermal stability and solubility), optical (e.g., light absorption range), and electronic properties (e.g., charge carrier mobility, redox potential, and exciton binding energy) can be easily tuned via structural design. In addition, they are of light weight (i.e., mainly composed of C, N, O, and S). To improve the photocatalytic performance of CPs and better understand the catalytic mechanisms, many strategies with respect to material design have been proposed. These include tuning the bandgap, enlarging the surface area, enabling more efficient separation of electron–hole pairs, and enhancing the charge carrier mobility. In particular, donor–acceptor (D–A) polymers were demonstrated as a promising platform to develop high-performance photocatalysts due to their easily tunable bandgaps, high charge carrier mobility, and efficient intramolecular charge transfer. In this minireview, recent advances of D–A polymers in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are summarized with a particular focus on modulating the optical and electronic properties of CPs by varying the acceptor units. The challenges and prospects associated with D–A polymer-based photocatalysts are described as well.

Abstract:Conjugated micropore polymers (CMPs) have emerged as a class of promising catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this report, we described our development of two triazine- and dithienothiophene-based CMP photocatalysts, TzDTT and TzDTDO, both of which were fabricated via Suzuki–Miyaura coupling polymerization. It was found that TzDTT possesses stronger electron donor-acceptor (D-A) ability but a lower photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate than TzDTDO in some reaction media. The results indicated that the sulfone groups in TzDTDO plays a key role for its superior photocatalytic activity. The HER rate of 26.6 mmolg-1h-1 was achieved for TzDTDO in a MeCN/H2O/AA solution under AM1.5G simulated solar light and could be raised to 45.1 mmolg-1h-1 in the presence of Pt cocatalyst (3 wt%).

Abstract:Solar-driven hydrogen evolution from water splitting provides an ideal protocol for alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is often limited by poor light-absorption ability, sluggish electron-hole kinetics, and ineffective charge transfer. Herein, a pyridine-contained covalent triazine framework was delicately designed to facilitate single-atom Co immobilization (Co1-PCTF), exhibiting an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 2562.4 mu mol g-1 h-1, which is much higher than that of the pristine CTF. It has been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the introduction of the pyridine ring significantly enhanced the pi-conjugation degree, optimizing the band structure and extending the visible-light absorption. The highly dispersed Co atoms show notable electron-rich properties, promoting charge separation and offering abundant active sites for H+ reduction. Additionally, the robust Co-N bridge with a large potential difference creates a built-in electronic field for efficient directional transfer from the organic substrate to the Co site. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of CTF-based advanced photocatalysts with high activity and durability.

Abstract:•Two kinds of novel bipyridine-based conjugated organic polymers Bp-COP and BpZn-COP possessing excellent light-harvesting properties and appropriate band structures are designed and successfully synthesized.•The conjugated polymers Bp-COP and BpZn-COP are found to enable efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light irradiation.•Assembling conjugated organic polymers with TiO2 as charge transferring mediate can remarkably boost their photocatalytic activities to more than 8 times, giving an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of over 2.5% at the input wavelength of 420 nm.

Abstract:The tunable structures and versatile properties for conjugated polymers (CPs) make them viable as a molecular platform for photocatalytic water splitting. Normally, structure design of polymer photocatalyst is focus on tuning its optical band structure or charge-separation ability, the importance of electron-output ability in photocatalytic process is always ignored. This study demonstrates a molecular engineering strategy by introducing an electron-output "tentacle" site, i.e. dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide (FSO) unit, into the polymer backbone to construct a series of donor-acceptor type conjugated polymer photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution, which not only results in optimized light absorption ability and excellent exciton-separation, but also leads to the efficient electron-output ability. Detailed DFT calculations further theoretically confirm the vital role of FSO unit as an electron-output "tentacle" site.
