Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with two-dimensional structures have exhibited promising visible-light-induced H-2 evolution performance. However, it is still a challenge to improve their activity. Herein, we report pi-conjugation-linked CTF-1/GO for boosting photocatalytic H-2 evolution. The CTF-1/GO hybrid material was obtained by a facile low-temperature condensation of 1,4-dicyanobenzene in the presence of GO. The results of photocatalytic H-2 evolution indicate that the optimum hybrid, CTF-1/GO-3.0, exhibited an H-2 evolution rate of 2262.4 mu mol . g(-1) . h(-1) under visible light irradiation, which was 9 times that of pure CTF-1. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the fact that GO in CTF-1/GO hybrids not only acts as an electron collector and transporter like a "bridge" to facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges but also shortens the electron migration path due to its thin sheet layer uniformly distribution over CTF-1. This work could help future development of novel conjugated CTF-based composite materials as high-efficiency photocatalyst for photocatalysis.
Strongly Coupled NH2NH-modified High Crystallinity Graphene Quantum Dots/carbon Nitride for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:For the application of photocatalysis, the development of noble metal-free cocatalysts is crucial. Here, a simple molecular fusion method was employed to create high crystallinity GQDs with the-NHNH2 modification, which were then used as an effective metal-free cocatalyst in the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction. The modified-NHNH2 Lewis base active sites, the quick charge separation channels, and the improved electric conductivity allowed the optimized NHNH2-GQDs/PUCN sample to exhibit an H2 evolution rate of 204.2 mmol g-1 h-1, which is an 80-fold greater activity than that of pure PUCN. Boosting Charge Separation in Conjugated Microporous Polymers via Fluorination for Enhancing Photocatalysis

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have emerged to be prospective heterogeneous photocatalysts for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation due to their ease of functionalization, high surface area and porosity, and tunable band gap. However, their photocatalytic efficiency is much lower than expected due to the fast charge recombination and insufficient charge separation. Herein, a fluorination strategy was developed to inhibit charge recombination and promote charge separation in CMPs by selectively employing carbazole as the donor and fluorinated precursors as the acceptor, respectively. As a result, a series of fluorinated CbzCMP-n (n = 10-12) featuring π- conjugate of the donor (D)-acceptor (A) structure was obtained, in which both their effective charge separation and transfer and broad visible light absorbance were facilitated. The fluorinated CbzCMP-11 and CbzCMP-12 significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency compared to their counterpart CbzCMP-10 free of fluorination as demonstrated by photocatalytic construction of benzimidazoles and oxidation of sulfide. This fluorination strategy sheds light on the promoting of better balancing of electron and hole migration rates, the inhibition of charge recombination, and the expansion of the prospects of CMPs as metal-free photocatalysts in the conversion of various organic transformations.

Abstract:Developing visible-light-active porous organic polymers with high photocatalytic efficiency is highly desirable. Here, two triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers were synthesized. The structures were controllably adjusted to explore the structure–photocatalytic activity relationship. T-CMP-1 containing more triazine units exhibited a hydrogen evolution rate of 3214.3 μmol h–1 g–1, much higher than that of T-CMP-2 (242.1 μmol h–1 g–1). The increasing contents of triazine units bring better hydrogen evolution efficiency.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) featuring with extended π‐structures, large specific surface area and tailor‐made functionalities are a class of promising organic photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water. However, the photocatalytic activities of most CMPs are severely hindered by slow charge transfer rate and fast charge recombination process. Herein, we develop a strategy for the synthesis of donor‐acceptor CMPs through nickel(0)‐catalyzed Yamamoto cross‐coupling of 3,6‐dibromo‐9‐(4‐bromophenyl)carbazole (CZ) with 5,5'‐dibromo‐2,2'‐bipyridine (DBPy) for efficient HER from water. The PCZN‐4 prepared with a 2:3 stoichiometric ratio of CZ to DBPy exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen rate of 7160 μmol g‐1 h‐1, which was nearly equal to 179 times and 143 times that of PCZN‐1 (40 μmol g‐1 h‐1) and PCZN‐6 (50 μmol g‐1 h‐1) obtained by Yamamoto homocoupling of CZ and DBPy, respectively. Compared to the homocoupling counterparts, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the PCZN‐4 results from improved separation efficiency of charge carriers. Interestingly, the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of PCZN‐4 could be further improved up to 17080 μmol g‐1 h‐1 by adjusting pH of the aqueous solution. This work offers a novel approach for improving photocatalytic efficiency by tuning the chemical structures and surrounding microenvironment of the polymer backbone. Abstract:A reasonable design of samples with efficient spatial separation for photoinduced electron-hole pairs toward the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has gained significant attention. Herein, a new C/MoS2@ZnIn2S4/Co3O4 composite with a core-shell structure is designed toward photocatalytic hydrogen production on C/MoS2 and Co3O4 dual electron collectors. Co3O4 nanoparticles as the co-catalyst would form a Schottky junction with ZnIn2S4 nanosheets while the C/MoS2 hollow core would form the step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction with ZnIn2S4 sheets, which provides a dual photogenerated electron transfer pathway during the light irradiation process. In addition, the unique core-shell architecture offers large contact interfaces favoring the exposure of rich active sites, which facilitated the separation and the transfer of charges. Consequently, all these factors endowed the C/MoS2@ZnIn2S4/Co3O4 composite with enhanced light absorption ability and an increased hydrogen evolution rate of 6.7 mmol·g-1·h-1 under 420 nm light irradiation, which is about 23.4- and 4.5-fold that of ZnIn2S4 and CMZ, respectively. This work offers a guideline for designing efficient composite photocatalysts toward the photocatalytic HER.
Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution by Side‐Group Engineered Benzodiimidazole Oligomers with Strong Built‐in Electric Fields and Short‐Range Crystallinity

Abstract:The insufficient charge separation and sluggish exciton transport severely limit the utilization of polymeric photocatalysts. To resolve the above issues, we incorporate bountiful carboxyl substituents within a novel benzodiimidazole oligomer and assemble it into a crystalline semiconductor. The photocatalyst is polar, hydrophilic, short-range crystalline, and capable of both hydrogen and oxygen evolution. The introduction of carboxyl side-groups adds asymmetry to the local structure and increases the built-in electric field. Further, accelerated carrier transfer is enabled via the short-range crystallinity. The superior hydrogen and oxygen production rates of 18.63 and 2.87 mmol g(-1) h(-1) represent one of the best performances ever reported among dual-functional polymeric photocatalysts. Our work initiates studies on high-performance oligomer photocatalysts, opening a new frontier to produce solar fuel.

Abstract:The construction of heterojunctions with a rapid space charge separation mechanism is an effective means to improve the photocatalytic activity. In this work, QDs/NH2-MIL-101(Fe)-AP photocatalyst equipped with built-in electric field was rationally prepared by a molecular modification strategy. Electron-withdrawing effect of the pyridine ring facilitates the directional transfer of electrons from the internal part of NH2-MIL-101(Fe) to the heterojunction interface. Meanwhile, the electron self-driven effect incidental to the suitable conduction band positions of QDs and NH2-MIL-101(Fe)-AP, and the co-driving effect of electron transfer exerted by hydrogen bonding accelerate the electron enrichment in the conduction band of NH2-MIL-101(Fe)-AP. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution results showed that QDs/NH2-MIL-101(Fe)-AP reached an optimum rate of 2991.0 μmol h−1 g−1. Moreover, fluorescence and electrochemical tests revealed that the significant increase in photocatalytic activity is attributed to the efficient spatial separation of the photoinduced charge carriers.

Conjugated Polymers with Sequential Fluorination for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Via Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Abstract:The performance of donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymer-based photocatalyts for solar hydrogen production is severely limited by poor charge mobility and weak reactive sites. Here, a series of D-A conjugated polymers with electronegative fluorine atoms on the backbone is presented and the influence of fluorination on charge transfer and catalytic site activity is investigated. Theoretical calculation reveals that sequential fluorination on the A unit benzothiadiazole will activate the catalytic site, and the photocatalytic H-2 generation process could be illustrated by a proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism. Two series of fluorinated polymers were synthesized, and accelerated charge transfer was also verified. Among them, linear B-FOBT-1,4-E and porous B-FOBT-1,3,5-E with simultaneous electron-donating CH3O- and electron-withdrawing F-substitution show a H-2 evolution rate that is 3.1 and 28.8 times higher than that of nonfluorinated counterparts, respectively, and the apparent quantum yield of 5.7% at 420 nm is obtained for B-FOBT-1,4-E. The results provide reciprocal understanding of the activation nature of substituent-regulating polymers.

Abstract:The modulation of microstructures in conjugated polymers represents a viable strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency, albeit hampered by complex processing techniques. Here, we present an uncomplicated, template-free method to synthesize polymeric photocatalysts, namely BCN( x )@PPy, featuring a hollow nanotube-nanocluster core–shell superstructure. This configuration is realized through intramolecular covalent crosslinking and synergistic intermolecular donor–acceptor (D − A) interactions between phenylene pyrene (PPy, D) nanotubes and poly([1,1′-biphenyl]-3-carbonitrile) (PBCN, A) nanoclusters. Interestingly, the optimized BCN2@PPy composite demonstrates remarkably enhanced performance for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, with an efficiency of 14.7-fold higher than that of unmodified PPy nanotubes. Experimental and density functional theory calculations revealed that BCN( x )@PPy composites are conducive to shortening photogenerated exciton migration, facilitating charge separation and transfer, reducing nanoclusters aggregation or re-stacking, and providing sufficient catalytically active sites, all contributing to the heightened efficiency in photocatalysis. These insights underscore the potential for precise molecular adjustments in conjugated polymers, advancing artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Atomistic structural engineering of donor–acceptor‐based conjugated microporous polymers is proposed here. By varying the N‐content of the electron‐withdrawing units, their electron affinities can be readily modulated, leading to tunable band structures and exciton binding energies. The optimal material exhibits superior photocatalytic H2 performance using ascorbic acid as the sacrificial agent or coupled with the selective oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural to 2,5‐diformylfuran. Polymer photocatalysts have great promise for solar fuel production due to their flexible structural and functional designability. However, their photocatalytic efficiencies are still unsatisfactory, limited by their intrinsically large exciton binding energy and fast charge recombination. Herein, the atomistic structural engineering of donor–acceptor (D−A) polymer photocatalysts for enhanced charge separation and photocatalytic hydrogen production is proposed. By changing the electron affinity of the acceptor units, the electron delocalization and exciton binding energy of the polymeric networks can be readily tuned, resulting in enhanced charge separation efficiency and photocatalytic activity. The optimal sample shows the highest H2 production rate of 3207 μmol g−1 h−1 in the presence of ascorbic acid as the sacrificial agent. Moreover, the photocatalytic H2 production can be coupled with almost stoichiometrical conversion of 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural to 2,5‐diformylfuran.

Abstract:Through molecular engineering, the incorporation of polar ketone molecules induces local charge polarization within the two‐dimensional Substoichiometric COFs, significantly improving the performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Experimental and theoretical investigations provide comprehensive evidence that the introduction of ketone‐based single‐molecule junctions induces local charge polarization and delocalization, thereby facilitating efficient carrier separation, rapid charge transfer, and improved dispersion in water. Efficient charge carrier separation is widely recognized as crucial for effective photocatalytic solar energy conversion. Although certain covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit visible light absorption, rapid carrier recombination often severely restricts their photocatalytic efficiency. This study presents a novel molecular‐engineering approach to enhance carrier separation in 2D substoichiometric COFs post‐treatment with polar ketone molecules. Remarkably, through molecular engineering, incorporating polar ketone molecules induces local charge polarization within the COFs, substantially improving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Specifically, the modified COFs single‐molecule junctions demonstrate a 5.6‐fold increase in efficiency compared to the unmodified COFs. Experimental and theoretical investigations provide comprehensive evidence that introducing ketone‐based single‐molecule junctions induces local charge polarization and delocalization, thereby facilitating efficient carrier separation, rapid charge transfer, and enhanced dispersion in water. These findings validate the potential of fine‐tuning the carrier separation properties of COFs at the molecular level, offering new prospects for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Separation of photogenerated charges is one of the key steps in photocatalysis, whose efficiency largely determines the overall photocatalytic performance in water splitting. It is known that the formation of hybrid nanostructures is a promising solution to improve photocatalytic performance. However, the chemical environment difference during the synthesis of hybrid nanostructures may bring additional influencing factors to material systems. In this case, the design and synthesis of well-defined and clean samples are highly important to fundamental investigations. Integrating TiO2 nanosheets with graphene can enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 through the effective separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface formed by C-O bonds. To investigate the influence of photogenerated charge separation on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites, we modulate the separation of the photogenerated charges by controlling the size and thickness of TiO2 nanosheets with the same chemical environment, which helps investigate its effect on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites. Specifically, a series of TiO2 nanosheets with different thickness are synthesized by controlling the amount of hydrofluoric acid and combined with graphene for photocatalytic hydrogen production. The hybrid nanostructures are formed through a simple and clean process so as to possess a reliable platform for evaluating the relationship between structural parameters and performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The experiment results show that the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/rGO composites increases with the reduction in the thickness of TiO2 nanosheets. As the thickness of TiO2 nanosheets decreases, the migration distance of the photo-excited electrons is reduced so as to effectively suppress the recombination of the photo-excited charges. In the meanwhile, the TiO2/graphene interface is enlarged to promote the separation of the photogenerated charges in TiO2. As a result, the utilization efficiency of the photogenerated charges has been substantially enhanced. This work demonstrates that modulating the separation of photogenerated charges in TiO2/graphene composites by controlling the size of TiO2 nanosheets is an effective strategy for improving the photocatalytic performance of TiO2/graphene composites.
Programmed Charge Transfer in Conjugated Polymers with Pendant Benzothiadiazole Acceptor for Simultaneous Photocatalytic H2O2 Production and Organic Synthesis

Abstract:While being important candidate for heterogeneous photocatalyst, conjugated polymer typically exhibits random charge transfers between the alternating donor and acceptor units, which severely limits its catalytic efficiency. Herein, inspired by natural photosystem, the concept of guiding the charge migration to specific reaction sites is employed to significantly boost photocatalytic performance of linear conjugated polymers (LCPs) with pendant functional groups via creating programmed charge-transfer channels from the backbone to its pendant moiety. The pendant benzothiadiazole, as revealed in both in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, can act as electron "reservoir" that aggregates electrons at the active sites. Moreover, the presence of charge-transfer channels, evidenced by transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), accelerates the electron transfer, preventing the recombination of electrons and holes. As a result, in this elaborately-designed architecture, the photogenerated electron can move smoothly towards the reduction sites, facilitating the reduction of O2 into H2O2, while remaining holes are directed to oxidation centers, simultaneously oxidizing furfuryl alcohol to furoic acid. The optimized photocatalyst LCP-BT demonstrates a competitive catalytic performance with H2O2 productivity of 868.3 μmol L-1 h-1 (9.8 times higher than conventional random charge-transfer polymer LCP-1) and furfuryl alcohol conversion over 95% after 6 h.

Abstract:Rational design of organic semiconductors with wide visible light absorption and quick charge separation is of great significance for photocatalytic hydrogen production form water. In this work, the chemical structure of a linear conjugated polymer composed of ethynyl-linked benzene (B) and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT) is regulated by thiophene (TP) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [naphthalene (N) and anthracene (A)], and series of polymers including B-BT-TP-x, N-BT-TP-x and A-BT-TP-x (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) are synthesized. After thiophene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon regulation, the polymers exhibit strong absorption in the whole visible light region of 400->650 nm and quick internal charge separation and transfer. Visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production rates of the synthesized polymers follow the order of B-BT (170.0 μmol/h) < B-BT-TP-0.6 (735.3 μmol/h) < N-BT-TP-0.4 (841.5 μmol/h) < A-BT-TP-0.6 (969.2 μmol/h) using 30 mg catalyst with 1.0 wt% Pt as cocatalyst. In addition, high apparent quantum yield (AQY) values of 8.04%, 5.58% and 0.95% under 550 nm, 650 nm and 700 nm monochromatic lights are obtained using A-BT-TP-0.6 catalyst. The present work provides new insights into design of advanced organic semiconductors for highly efficient photocatalytic solar energy conversion.

Incorporating P-Phenylene As an Electron-Donating Group into Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Efficient Charge Separation.

Abstract:Low charge-separation transport efficiency resulting from structural defects largely limits photocatalytic hydrogen production over polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (PCN) photocatalyst. Herein, an electron-donating group, namely p-phenylene, is incorporated into PCN by a polycondensation reaction between carbon nitride and p-phenylenediamine (or p-benzoquinone) to repair the structural defects. The p-phenylene-modified PCN exhibits an almost fivefold increase in H-2 evolution, a threefold increase in photocurrent density, and higher nonradiative rate (0.285 ns(-1)). Spectroscopic studies confirm that p-phenylene tends to bridge the heptazine-based oligomers through a polycondensation reaction. Theoretical calculations reveal that anchoring of the heptazine units by p-phenylene induces localization of h(+) and e(-) on the phenylene and melem moieties, respectively, which effectively separates the charge carriers. This strategy provides an opportunity to overcome structural defects in carbon nitride for efficient photocatalytic solar energy conversion.
Non-Covalently Linked Donor-Acceptor Interaction Enhancing Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Porphyrin Assembly

Abstract:The separation of photogenerated excitons plays a crucial role in initiating high-efficiency photocatalysis of organic semiconductors. Herein, a non-covalent donor-acceptor (D-A) structure composed of tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) zinc porphyrin (ZnTCPP) linked to ethylenediamine functionalized fullerene (C60-EDA) by electrostatic interaction was successfully developed. Due to D-A interaction, an efficient electron transfer channel from ZnTCPP to C60-EDA was established, resulting in a charge-separated state with appreciable lifetime. Accordingly, the photogenerated excitons separation got considerably improved and charge-carrier exhibited faster migration to the surface of D-A assembly. ZnTCPP/C60-EDA presented efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution of 113.5 μmol h−1 under full spectrum, 3.9 times higher that of pure ZnTCPP. This work offers valuable insight into the non-covalent D-A construction for enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) have been widely reported as promising photocatalysts. However, the realization of powerful photocatalytic hydrogen production performance still benefits from the rational design of molecular frameworks and the appropriate choice of building monomers. Herein, we synthesized two novel conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) by copolymerizing pyrene and 1,3,5-triazine building blocks. It is found that minor structural changes in the peripheral groups of the triazine units can greatly affect the photocatalytic activity of the polymers. Compared with the phenyl-linkage unit, the thiophene-linkage unit can give CPP a wider absorption range of visible light, a narrower band gap, a higher transmission and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers (electrons/holes), and a better interface contact with the photocatalytic reaction solution. The catalyst containing thiophene-triazine (ThPy-CPP) has an efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 21.65 and 16.69 mmol g −1 h −1 under full-arc spectrum and visible light without the addition of a Pt co-catalyst, respectively, much better than the one containing phenyl-triazine (PhPy-CPP, only 5.73 and 3.48 mmol g −1 h −1 ). This study provides a promising direction to design and construct highly efficient, cost-effective CPP-based photocatalysts, for exploring the application of noble metal-free catalysts in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
