Abstract:Building on a recent construction of G. Plebanek and the third named author, it is shown that a complemented subspace of a Banach lattice need not be linearly isomorphic to a Banach lattice. This solves a long-standing open question in Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:We provide a sufficient condition for the sum of a finite number of complemented subspaces of a Banach space to be complemented. Under this condition a formula for a projection onto the sum is given. We also show that the condition is sharp (in a certain sense). As applications, we get (1) sufficient conditions for the complementability of sums of marginal subspaces in $L^p$ and sums of tensor powers of subspaces in a tensor power of a Banach space and (2) quantitative results on stability of the complementability property of the sum of linearly independent subspaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize complementable operators and provide more precise expressions for the Schur complement of these operators using a single Douglas solution. We demonstrate the existence of subspaces where the given operator is invariably complementable. Additionally, we investigate the range-Hermitian property of these operators.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the separated pair of closed submodules in the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We demonstrate that even in the case of Hilbert spaces this concept has several nice characterizations enriching the theory of separated pairs of subspaces in Hilbert spaces. Let $\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr K$ be orthogonally complemented closed submodules of a Hilbert $C^*$-module $\mathscr E$. We establish that $ (\mathscr H,\mathscr K)$ is a separated pair in $\mathscr{E}$ if and only if there are idempotents $\Pi_1$ and $\Pi_2$ such that $\Pi_1\Pi_2=\Pi_2\Pi_1=0$ and $\mathscr R(\Pi_1)=\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr R(\Pi_2)=\mathscr K$. We show that $\mathscr R(\Pi_1+\lambda\Pi_2)$ is closed for each $\lambda\in \mathbb{C}$ if and only if $\mathscr R(\Pi_1+\Pi_2)$ is closed.

On the converse of Gaschütz' complement theorem

Abstract:Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G. Let N\le H\le G such that N has a complement in H and (|N|,|G:H|)=1. If N is abelian, a theorem of Gaschütz asserts that N has a complement in G as well. Brandis has asked whether the commutativity of N can be replaced by some weaker property. We prove that N has a complement in G whenever all Sylow subgroups of N are abelian. On the other hand, we construct counterexamples if Z(N)\cap N'\ne 1. For metabelian groups N, the condition Z(N)\cap N'=1 implies the existence of complements. Finally, if N is perfect and centerless, then Gaschütz' theorem holds for N if and only if Inn(N) has a complement in Aut(N).

Abstract:Considering the deeper reasons of the appearance of a remarkable counterexample by Kaad and Skeide (J Operat Theory 89(2):343–348, 2023) we consider situations in which two Hilbert C*-modules with over a fixed C*-algebra A of coefficients cannot be separated by a non-trivial bounded A -linear functional vanishing on M . In other words, the uniqueness of extensions of the zero functional from M to N is focussed. We show this uniqueness of extension for any such pairs of Hilbert C*-modules over W*-algebras, over monotone complete C*-algebras and over compact C*-algebras. Moreover, uniqueness of extension takes place also for any one-sided maximal modular ideal of any C*-algebra. Such a non-zero separating bounded A -linear functional exist for a given pair of full Hilbert C*-modules over a given C*-algebra A iff there exists a bounded A -linear non-adjointable operator , such that the kernel of is not biorthogonally closed w.r.t. N and contains M . This is a new perspective on properties of bounded modular operators that might appear in Hilbert C*-module theory. By the way, we find a correct proof of Lemma 2.4 of Frank (Int J Math 13:1–19, 2002) in the case of monotone complete and compact C*-algebras, but find it not valid in certain particular cases.

Complemented subspaces of Banach spaces $C(K\times L)$

Abstract:We prove that, for every compact spaces $K_1,K_2$ and compact group $G$, if both $K_1$ and $K_2$ map continuously onto $G$, then the Banach space $C(K_1 \times K_2)$ contains a complemented subspace isometric to the Banach space $C(G)$. Consequently, $C(K_1\times K_2)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1])$ for every non-scattered $K_1,K_2$. Also, answering a question of Alspach and Galego, we get that $C(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains a complemented copy of $C([0,1]^\kappa)$ for every cardinal number $1\le\kappa\le{\mathfrak c}$ and hence a complemented copy of $C(K)$ for every metric compact space $K$. On the other hand, for the pointwise topology, we show that $C_p(\beta\omega\times\beta\omega)$ contains no complemented copy of $C_p(2^\omega)$.

Abstract:We continue [GbSh:568] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.LO/0003164" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.LO/0003164">math.LO/0003164</a>), proving a stronger result under the special continuum hypothesis (CH). The original question of Eklof and Mekler related to dual abelian groups. We want to find a particular example of a dual group, which will provide a negative answer to the question. In order to derive a stronger and also more general result we will concentrate on reflexive modules over countable principal ideal domains R. Following <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://H.Bass" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, an R-module G is reflexive if the evaluation map s:G-->G^{**} is an isomorphism. Here G^*=Hom(G,R) denotes the dual group of G. Guided by classical results the question about the existence of a reflexive R-module G of infinite rank with G not cong G+R is natural. We will use a theory of bilinear forms on free R-modules which strengthens our algebraic results in [GbSh:568] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.LO/0003164" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.LO/0003164">math.LO/0003164</a>). Moreover we want to apply a model theoretic combinatorial theorem from [Sh:e] which allows us to avoid the weak diamond principle. This has the great advantage that the used prediction principle is still similar to the diamond, but holds under CH.

Abstract:We study module like objects over categorical quotients of algebras by the action of coalgebras with several objects. These take the form of ``entwined comodules'' and ``entwined contramodules'' over a triple $(\mathscr C,A,\psi)$, where $A$ is an algebra, $\mathscr C$ is a coalgebra with several objects and $\psi$ is a collection of maps that ``entwines'' $\mathscr C$ with $A$. Our objective is to prove Frobenius, separability and Maschke type theorems for functors between categories of entwined comodules and entwined contramodules.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce the concept of weakly uniquely stationary representations. This framework enables us to investigate the complementability of closed subspaces within the context of continuous cohomology with coeffcients in Banach modules. As an application, we extend and refine several cohomological results from the literature, particularly in the settings of nilpotent groups, products of groups, and lattices.

Abstract:If a Banach-space operator has a complemented range, then its normed-space adjoint has a complemented kernel and the converse holds on a reflexive Banach space. It is also shown when complemented kernel for an operator is equivalent to complemented range for its normed-space adjoint. This is applied to compact operators and to compact perturbations. Abstract:Saki and Kiani proved that the subrack lattice of a rack $R$ is necessarily complemented if $R$ is finite but not necessarily complemented if $R$ is infinite. In this paper, we investigate further avenues related to the complementation of subquandles. Saki and Kiani's example of an infinite rack without complements is a quandle, which is neither ind-finite nor profinite. We provide an example of an ind-finite quandle whose subobject lattice is not complemented, and conjecture that profinite quandles have complemented subobject lattices. Additionally, we provide a complete classification of subquandles whose set-theoretic complement is also a subquandle, which we call \textit{strongly complemented}, and provide a partial transitivity criterion for the complementation in chains of strongly complemented subquandles. One technical lemma used in establishing this is of independent interest: the inner automorphism group of a subquandle is always a subquotient of the inner automorphism group of the ambient quandle.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a commutative ring and [math], [math] be positive integers. We define a proper submodule [math] of an [math]-module [math] to be [math]-closed if for [math] and [math], [math] implies [math] or [math]. This class of submodules lies properly between the classes of prime and primary submodules. Many characterizations, properties and supporting examples concerning this class of submodules are provided. The notion of [math] -modules is introduced and characterized. Furthermore, the [math]-closed avoidance theorem is proved. Finally, the [math]-closed submodules in amalgamated modules are studied.

Abstract:The notion of minimal complements was introduced by Nathanson in 2011. Since then, the existence or the inexistence of minimal complements of sets have been extensively studied. Recently, the study of inverse problems, i.e., which sets can or cannot occur as minimal complements has gained traction. For example, the works of Kwon, Alon--Kravitz--Larson, Burcroff--Luntzlara and also that of the authors, shed light on some of the questions in this direction. These works have focussed mainly on the group of integers, or on abelian groups. In this work, our motivation is two-fold: (i) to show some new results on the inverse problem, (ii) to concentrate on the inverse problem in not necessarily abelian groups. As a by-product, we obtain new results on non-minimal complements in the group of integers and more generally, in any finitely generated abelian group of positive rank and in any free abelian group of positive rank. Moreover, we show the existence of uncountably many subsets in such groups which are "robust" non-minimal complements.

The Modular Isomorphism Problem -- the alternative perspective on counterexamples

Abstract:As a result of impressive research <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.07231" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.07231">arXiv:2106.07231</a>, D. Garc\'ıa-Lucas, Á. del Río and L. Margolis defined an infinite series of non-isomorphic $2$-groups $G$ and $H$, whose group algebras $\mathbb{F}G$ and $\mathbb{F}H$ over the field $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic, solving negatively the long-standing Modular Isomorphism Problem (MIP). In this note we give a different perspective on their examples and show that they are special cases of a more general construction. We also show that this type of construction for $p>2$ does not provide a similar counterexample to the MIP.

Abstract:We show that the category of partial comodules over a Hopf algebra H is comonadic over Vect k and provide an explicit construction of this comonad using topological vector spaces. The case when H is finite-dimensional is treated in detail. A study of partial representations of linear algebraic groups is initiated; we show that a connected linear algebraic group does not admit partiality.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.
