Abstract:We present a mesoscale elastoplastic model of creep in disordered materials which considers temperature-dependent stochastic activation of localized deformation events which are mutually coupled by internal stresses, leading to collective avalanche dynamics. We generalize this stochastic plasticity model by introducing damage in terms of a local strength that decreases, on statistical average, with increasing local plastic strain. As a consequence the model captures failure in terms of strain localization in a catastrophic shear band concomitant with a finite-time singularity of the creep rate. The statistics of avalanches in the run-up to failure is characterized by a decreasing avalanche exponent $\tau$ that, at failure, approaches the value $\tau = 1.5$ typical of a critical branching process. The average avalanche rate exhibits an inverse Omori law as a function of the time-to-failure, whereas the distribution of inter-avalanche times turns out to be consistent with the ETAS model of earthquake statistics.

Abstract:Yield stress fluids display complex dynamics, in particular when driven into the transient regime between the solid and the flowing state. Inspired by creep experiments on dense amorphous materials, we implement mesocale elasto-plastic descriptions to analyze such transient dynamics in athermal systems. Both our mean-field and space-dependent approaches consistently reproduce the typical experimental strain rate responses to different applied steps in stress. Moreover, they allow us to understand basic processes involved in the strain rate slowing down (creep) and the strain rate acceleration (fluidization) phases. The fluidization time increases in a power-law fashion as the applied external stress approaches a static yield stress. This stress value is related to the stress over-shoot in shear start-up experiments, and it is known to depend on sample preparation and age. By calculating correlations of the accumulated plasticity in the spatially resolved model, we reveal different modes of cooperative motion during the creep dynamics.

Microscopic description of the intermittent dynamics driving logarithmic creep

Abstract:Disordered materials under an imposed forcing can display creep and aging effects, accompanied by intermittent, spatially heterogeneous dynamics. We propose a unifying microscopic description of these phenomena, based on the notion that as the system ages, the density of local barriers that enable relaxation displays a slowly evolving gap. As a result, the relaxation dynamics is dominated by the activation of the lowest, extremal tail of the distribution. This framework predicts logarithmic creep, as well as correlated bursts of slow activated rearrangements, or 'thermal avalanches', whose size grows logarithmically with their duration. The time interval between events within avalanches obeys a universal power-law distribution, with a cut-off that is simply proportional to the age of the system. We show that these predictions hold both in numerical models of amorphous solids, as well as in experiments with thin crumpled sheets. This analysis suggests that the heterogeneous dynamics occurring during logarithmic creep is related to other phenomena, including dynamical heterogeneities characterising the glass transition.

Dislocation dynamics modelling of the creep behaviour of particle-strengthened materials

Abstract:Plastic deformation in crystalline materials occurs through dislocation slip and strengthening is achieved with obstacles that hinder the motion of dislocations. At relatively low temperatures, dislocations bypass the particles by Orowan looping, particle shearing, cross-slip or a combination of these mechanisms. At elevated temperatures, atomic diffusivity becomes appreciable, so that dislocations can bypass the particles by climb processes. Climb plays a crucial role in the long-term durability or creep resistance of many structural materials, particularly under extreme conditions of load, temperature and radiation. Here we systematically examine dislocation-particle interaction mechanisms. The analysis is based on three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulations incorporating impenetrable particles, elastic interactions, dislocation self-climb, cross-slip and glide. The core diffusion dominated dislocation self-climb process is modelled based on a variational principle for the evolution of microstructures, and is coupled with dislocation glide and cross-slip by an adaptive time-stepping scheme to bridge the time scale separation. The stress field caused by particles is implemented based on the particle–matrix mismatch. This model is helpful for understanding the fundamental particle bypass mechanisms and clarifying the effects of dislocation glide, climb and cross-slip on creep deformation.
Prediction of creep failure time using machine learning

Abstract:A subcritical load on a disordered material can induce creep damage. The creep rate in this case exhibits three temporal regimes viz. an initial decelerating regime followed by a steady-state regime and a stage of accelerating creep that ultimately leads to catastrophic breakdown. Due to the statistical regularities in the creep rate, the time evolution of creep rate has often been used to predict residual lifetime until catastrophic breakdown. However, in disordered samples, these efforts met with limited success. Nevertheless, it is clear that as the failure is approached, the damage become increasingly spatially correlated, and the spatio-temporal patterns of acoustic emission, which serve as a proxy for damage accumulation activity, are likely to mirror such correlations. However, due to the high dimensionality of the data and the complex nature of the correlations it is not straightforward to identify the said correlations and thereby the precursory signals of failure. Here we use supervised machine learning to estimate the remaining time to failure of samples of disordered materials. The machine learning algorithm uses as input the temporal signal provided by a mesoscale elastoplastic model for the evolution of creep damage in disordered solids. Machine learning algorithms are well-suited for assessing the proximity to failure from the time series of the acoustic emissions of sheared samples. We show that materials are relatively more predictable for higher disorder while are relatively less predictable for larger system sizes. We find that machine learning predictions, in the vast majority of cases, perform substantially better than other prediction approaches proposed in the literature.

Abstract:We report two-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulations of combined dislocation glide and climb leading to `power-law' creep in a model aluminum crystal. The approach fully accounts for matter transport due to vacancy diffusion and its coupling with dislocation motion. The existence of quasi-equilibrium or jammed states under the applied creep stresses enables observations of diffusion and climb over time scales relevant to power-law creep. The predictions for the creep rates and stress exponents fall within experimental ranges, indicating that the underlying physics is well captured.

Spatial fluctuations in transient creep deformation

Abstract:We study the spatial fluctuations of transient creep deformation of materials as a function of time, both by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measurements of paper samples and by numerical simulations of a crystal plasticity or discrete dislocation dynamics model. This model has a jamming or yielding phase transition, around which power-law or Andrade creep is found. During primary creep, the relative strength of the strain rate fluctuations increases with time in both cases - the spatially averaged creep rate obeys the Andrade law $\epsilon_t \sim t^{-0.7}$, while the time dependence of the spatial fluctuations of the local creep rates is given by $\Delta \epsilon_t \sim t^{-0.5}$. A similar scaling for the fluctuations is found in the logarithmic creep regime that is typically observed for lower applied stresses. We review briefly some classical theories of Andrade creep from the point of view of such spatial fluctuations. We consider these phenomenological, time-dependent creep laws in terms of a description based on a non-equilibrium phase transition separating evolving and frozen states of the system when the externally applied load is varied. Such an interpretation is discussed further by the data collapse of the local deformations in the spirit of absorbing state/depinning phase transitions, as well as deformation-deformation correlations and the width of the cumulative strain distributions. The results are also compared with the order parameter fluctuations observed close to the depinning transition of the 2$d$ Linear Interface Model or the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation.

Creep motion of elastic interfaces driven in a disordered landscape

Abstract:The thermally activated creep motion of an elastic interface weakly driven on a disordered landscape is one of the best examples of glassy universal dynamics. Its understanding has evolved over the last 30 years thanks to a fruitful interplay between elegant scaling arguments, sophisticated analytical calculations, efficient optimization algorithms and creative experiments. In this article, starting from the pioneer arguments, we review the main theoretical and experimental results that lead to the current physical picture of the creep regime. In particular, we discuss recent works unveiling the collective nature of such ultra-slow motion in terms of elementary activated events. We show that these events control the mean velocity of the interface and cluster into "creep avalanches" statistically similar to the deterministic avalanches observed at the depinning critical threshold. The associated spatio-temporal patterns of activated events have been recently observed in experiments with magnetic domain walls. The emergent physical picture is expected to be relevant for a large family of disordered systems presenting thermally activated dynamics.

History effects in the creep of a disordered brittle material

Abstract:We study the creep behavior of a disordered brittle material (concrete) under successive loading steps, using acoustic emission and ultrasonic sensing to track internal damage. The primary creep rate is observed to follow a (Omori-type) power-law decay in the strain rate, the number of acoustic emission events, as well as the amplitudes of the ultrasonic beams, supporting a brittle-creep mechanism. The distribution of acoustic emission event energies is observed to have a scale-free power-law distribution instead of a truncated one expected for a system approaching a critical point at failure. The main outcome is, however, the discovery of unexpected history effects that make the material less prone to creep when it has been previously deformed and damaged under primary creep. With the help of a progressive damage model implementing thermal activation, we interpret this as an aging-under-stress phenomenon: During an initial creep step at relatively low applied stress, the easy-to-damage sites are exhausted first, depleting the excitation spectrum at low stress gap values. Consequently on reloading, although previously damaged, the primary creep restarts but the material creeps (and damages) less than it would under the same stress but without precreeping. Besides shedding a new light on the fundamental physics of creep of disordered brittle materials, this has important practical consequences in the interpretation of some experimental procedures, such as stress-stepping experiments. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.7.033602 ©2023 American Physical Society

Logarithmic vs Andrade's transient creep: the role of elastic stress redistribution

Abstract:Creep is defined as time-dependent deformation and rupture processes taking place within a material subjected to a constant applied stress smaller than its athermal, time-independent strength. This time-dependence is classically attributed to thermal activation of local deformation events. The phenomenology of creep is characterized by several ubiquitous but empirical rheological and scaling laws. We focus here on primary creep following the onset of loading, for which a power law decay of the strain-rate is observed, with the exponent p varying between '0.4 and 1, this upper bound defining the so-called logarithmic creep. Although this phenomenology is known for more than a century, the physical origin of Andrade-like (p <1) creep remains unclear and debated. Here we show that p <1 values arise from the interplay between thermal activation and elastic stress redistribution. The latter stimulates creep dynamics from a shortening of waiting times between successive events, is associated to material damage and possibly, at high temperature and/or stresses, gives rise to avalanches of deformation events.

Creep control in soft particle packings

Abstract:Granular packings display a wealth of mechanical features which are of widespread significance. One of these features is creep: the slow deformation under applied stress. Creep is common for many other amorphous materials such as many metals and polymers. The slow motion of creep is challenging to understand, probe and control. We probe the creep properties of packings of soft spheres with a sinking ball viscometer. We find that in our granular packings, creep persists up to large strains and has a power law form, with diffusive dynamics. The creep amplitude is exponentially dependent on both applied stress and the concentration of hydrogel, suggesting that a competition between driving and confinement determines the dynamics. Our results provide insights into the mechanical properties of soft solids and the scaling laws provide a clear benchmark for new theory that explains creep, and provide the tantalizing prospect that creep can be controlled by a boundary stress.

A Discrete Dislocation Plasticity Model of Creep in Polycrystalline Thin Films

Abstract:A mesoscopic discrete dislocation dynamics is presented which is used to study constrained diffusional creep in polycrystalline thin films. Recent experimental work has shown that ultrathin polycrystalline films on substrates reveal a transition in the deformation behavior. Continuum modeling and atomistic simulation were used successfully to explain this transition as a shift from plastic deformation by dislocation slip on inclined slip planes for larger film thicknesses to diffusional creep for the smallest film thicknesses. During the creep process material from the surface migrates into the grain boundaries. Due to the constraint of the substrate, this diffusional creep builds up large internal stresses that are responsible for dislocation glide on slip planes parallel to the film surface on which there is no resolved shear stress in the overall equibiaxial stress field. This process is investigated quantitatively with a discrete dislocation model describing diffusional creep as climb of dislocations and taking into account the slip on parallel slip planes relaxing the internal stresses. The results are shown to be consistent with experiment under certain assumptions, and thus help to identify the critical deformation processes during creep of ultrathin films.

Abstract:Creep mechanisms in uniaxially compressed 3D granular solids comprised of faceted frictionless grains are studied numerically using a constant pressure and constant stress simulation method. Rapid uniaxial compression followed by slow dilation is predicted on the basis of a logarithmic creep phenomenon. Micromechanical analysis indicates the existence of a correlation between granular creep and grain-scale deformations. Localized regions of large strain appear during creep and grow in magnitude and size with time. Furthermore, the accumulation of non-affine granular displacements increases linearly with local strain, thereby providing insights into the origins of plastic dissipation during stress-driven creep evolution. The prediction of slow logarithmic dynamics in the absence of friction indicates a universality in the role of plastic dissipation during the creep of granular solids.

Abstract:A mesoscopic characterization of mechanical behavior of thin metal films is developed. A functional of energy rate is set up. Introducing diffusion boundary conditions coupled with elastic and plastic process, an equation which can be solved by finite element method is derived from variation of the function. The method is illustrated with examples of creep in thin metal films with different parameters. Results show that the significance of different mechanisms varies with the parameters. The method is available for qualitative or semi-quantitative analysis of thin metal films in mesoscopic scale.

The second gap is either within the region available to the proton dissociation products, $\bar p+p\to (\bar p+gap)+X+gap+Y$, or adjacent to the outgoing proton $\bar p+p\to (\bar p+gap)+X+(gap+p)$. Results are reported for two-gap to one-gap event ratios and compared with one-gap to no-gap ratios and with theoretical expectations.

Abstract:Statistics and thermally activated dynamics of crack nucleation and propagation in a two-dimensional heterogeneous material containing quenched randomly distributed defects are studied theoretically. Using the generalized Griffith criterion we derive the equation of motion for the crack tip position accounting for dissipation, thermal noise and the random forces arising from the defects. We find that aggregations of defects generating long-range interaction forces (e.g., clouds of dislocations) lead to anomalously slow creep of the crack tip or even to its complete arrest. We demonstrate that heterogeneous materials with frozen defects contain a large number of arrested microcracks and that their fracture toughness is enhanced to the experimentally accessible time scales.

Abstract:We develop an irreversible thermodynamics framework for the description of creep deformation in crystalline solids by mechanisms that involve vacancy diffusion and lattice site generation and annihilation. The material undergoing the creep deformation is treated as a nonhydrostatically stressed multicomponent solid medium with nonconserved lattice sites and inhomogeneities handled by employing gradient thermodynamics. Phase fields describe microstructure evolution, which gives rise to redistribution of vacancy sinks and sources in the material during the creep process. We derive a general expression for the entropy production rate and use it to identify of the relevant fluxes and driving forces and to formulate phenomenological relations among them taking into account symmetry properties of the material. As a simple application, we analyze a one-dimensional model of a bicrystal in which the grain boundary acts as a sink and source of vacancies. The kinetic equations of the model describe a creep deformation process accompanied by grain boundary migration and relative rigid translations of the grains. They also demonstrate the effect of grain boundary migration induced by a vacancy concentration gradient across the boundary.

Abstract:When stressed sufficiently, solid materials yield and deform plastically via reorganization of microscopic constituents. Indeed, it is possible to alter the micro-structure of materials by judicious application of stress, an empirical pro- cess utilized in practice to enhance the mechanical properties of metals. Un- derstanding the interdependence of plastic flow and microscopic structure in these non-equilibrium states, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we ex- perimentally investigate this relationship, between the relaxation dynamics and microscopic structure of disordered colloidal solids during plastic deformation. We apply oscillatory shear to solid colloidal monolayers and study their particle trajectories as a function of shear rate in the plastic regime. Under these cir- cumstances, the strain rate, the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow, and the sample microscopic structure oscillate together but with different phases. Interestingly, the experiments reveal that the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow at time t is correlated with the strain rate and sample microscopic structure measured at earlier and later times, respectively. The relaxation rate, in this non-stationary condition, exhibits power-law shear-thinning behavior and scales exponentially with sample excess entropy. Thus, measurement of sample static structure (excess entropy) provides insight about both strain-rate and constituent rearrangement dynamics in the sample at earlier times.

Creep response of athermal amorphous solids under imposed shear stress

Abstract:Yield stress materials fail when the imposed stress crosses a critical threshold. A well-known dynamical response to the applied stress is the phenomenon of creep where the cumulative deformation grows sublinearly with time, prior to failure or arrest. Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we study such response for a model amorphous system, in the athermal limit, and probe how the annealing history of the initial state determines the observed behaviour to an applied shear stress. Further, we analyze the microscopic dynamics in the vicinity of the yield threshold, using large systems, and characterize the spatiotemporal signatures towards arrest or flow, at different scales.

Abstract:Viscoelasticity has been described since the time of Maxwell as an interpolation of purely viscous and purely elastic response, but its microscopic atomic-level mechanism in solids has remained elusive. We studied three model disordered solids: a random lattice, the bond-depleted fcc lattice, and the fcc lattice with vacancies. Within the harmonic approximation for central-force lattices, we applied sum-rules for viscoelastic response derived on the basis of non-affine atomic motions. The latter motions are a direct result of local structural disorder, and in particular, of the lack of inversion-symmetry in disordered lattices. By defining a suitable quantitative and general atomic-level measure of nonaffinity and inversion-symmetry, we show that the viscoelastic responses of all three systems collapse onto a master curve upon normalizing by the overall strength of inversion-symmetry breaking in each system. Close to the isostatic point for central-force lattices, power-law creep $G(t)\sim t^{-1/2}$ emerges as a consequence of the interplay between soft vibrational modes and non-affine dynamics, and various analytical scalings, supported by numerical calculations, are predicted by the theory.
