Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN), and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, e.g., MoS2) have attracted considerable attention in the past few years because of their novel properties and versatile potential applications. These 2D layers can be integrated into a monolayer (lateral 2D heterostructure) or a multilayer stack (vertical 2D heterostructure). The resulting artificial 2D structures provide access to new properties and applications beyond their component 2D atomic crystals and hence, they are emerging as a new exciting field of research. In this article, we review recent progress on the fabrication, characterization, and applications of various 2D heterostructures.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of high quality two-dimensional (2D) crystals offers exciting opportunities for new material design, such as the combination of extremely high in-plane stiffness and bending flexibility, compared to existing three-dimensional (3D) material forms. By combining different 2D crystals vertically or by in-plane stitching, unusual properties can arise due to nonlinear mechanical interactions between them. Van der Waals forces between vertically stacked crystals give rise to a wide range of useful phenomena such as layer-number dependent friction, superlubricity, creasing, and spatial modulation of elastic properties through Moiré structures. In the present article, we review and explain the mechanical behavior of 2D materials and heterostructures (graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides). Linear elastic properties of these 2D crystalline monolayers are well-studied using membrane nanoindentation towards their application in nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) devices. On the other hand, a more thorough understanding of friction, fracture and stress transfer mechanisms between 2D layers and with the substrate or matrix is still lacking. More in-depth understanding of geometry-dependent behavior could enable the application of these materials in multi-functional composites. We discuss emerging opportunities achievable by assembling 2D heterostructures to tailor their mechanical behavior, and perhaps even break the traditional bounds limiting the properties of the bulk homostructures. Furthermore, to accelerate the design and discovery of the infinite combinations of new 2D heterostructures, we construct a crowd-sourced searchable online database to record and exploit the studies reporting on the complex arrangements of these crystals.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals materials (2D materials for short) have developed into a novel material family that has attracted much attention, and thus the integration, performance and application of 2D van der Waals heterostructures has been one of the research hotspots in the field of condensed matter physics and materials science. The 2D van der Waals heterostructures provide a flexible and extensive platform for exploring diverse physical effects and novel physical phenomena, as well as for constructing novel spintronic devices. In this topical review article, starting with the transfer technology of 2D materials, we will introduce the construction, performance and application of 2D van der Waals heterostructures. Firstly, the preparation technology of 2D van der Waals heterostructures in detail will be presented according to the two classifications of wet transfer and dry transfer, including general equipment for transfer technology, the detailed steps of widely used transfer methods, a three-dimensional manipulating method for 2D materials, and hetero-interface cleaning methods. Then, we will introduce the performance and application of 2D van der Waals heterostructures, with a focus on 2D magnetic van der Waals heterostructures and their applications in the field of 2D van der Waals magnetic tunnel junctions and moiré superlattices. The development and optimization of 2D materials transfer technology will boost 2D van der Waals heterostructures to achieve breakthrough results in fundamental science research and practical application.

They have attracted intense research attention effort, due to their exotic physical properties and intriguing device performance, often beyond those found in their constituent 2D materials. Here we review research progresses in this emerging 2D system, including fabrication methods, material properties, device applications, and offer our perspectives on emerging research opportunities in this highly active area.

Abstract:Since the success of monolayer graphene exfoliation, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied due to their unique structures and unprecedented properties. Among these fascinating studies, the most predominant focus has been on their atomic structures, defects, and mechanical behaviors and properties, which serve as the basis for the practical applications of 2D materials. In this review, we first highlight the atomic structures of various 2D materials and the structural and energy features of some common defects. We then summarize the recent advances made in experimental, computational, and theoretical studies on the mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D materials. We mainly emphasized the underlying deformation and fracture mechanisms and the influences of various defects on mechanical behaviors and properties, which boost the emergence and development of topological design and defect engineering. We also further introduce the piezoelectric and flexoelectric behaviors of specific 2D materials to address the coupling between mechanical and electronic properties in 2D materials and the interactions between 2D crystals and substrates or between different 2D monolayers in heterostructures. Finally, we provide a perspective and outlook for future studies on the mechanical behaviors and properties of 2D materials.

Abstract:Graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, molybdenum disulphide, and layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) represent a class of two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals with unique properties due to reduced dimensionality. Stacking these materials on top of each other in a controlled fashion can create heterostructures with tailored properties that offers another promising approach to design and fabricate novel electronic devices. In this report, we attempt to review this rapidly developing field of hybrid materials. We summarize the fabrication methods for different 2D materials, the layer-by-layer growth of various vertical heterostructures and their electronic properties. Particular interests are given to in-situ stack aforementioned 2D materials in controlled sequences, and the TMDCs heterostructures.

Abstract:The physics of two-dimensional (2D) materials and heterostructures based on such crystals has been developing extremely fast. With new 2D materials, truly 2D physics has started to appear (e.g. absence of long-range order, 2D excitons, commensurate-incommensurate transition, etc). Novel heterostructure devices are also starting to appear - tunneling transistors, resonant tunneling diodes, light emitting diodes, etc. Composed from individual 2D crystals, such devices utilize the properties of those crystals to create functionalities that are not accessible to us in other heterostructures. We review the properties of novel 2D crystals and how their properties are used in new heterostructure devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) superlattices are promising candidates for future technological applications due to their unique electronic structure and exotic properties. Heterodimensional superlattices, consisting of 2D and other dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D, 3D) structural units, extend the applications of 2D superlattices to spintronics, thermoelectrics, and energy storage. In this perspective, we highlight the recent progress in heterodimensional superlattices based on 2D materials. First, we introduce the classification and properties of heterodimensional superlattices, including 3D/2D, 1D/2D, 2D/0D, and hybrid multidimensional superlattices. Second, the potential applications of 2D heterodimensional superlattices are discussed. Finally, we point out the current challenges and provide an outlook in the field of heterodimensional superlattices.

Abstract:Abstract 2D materials and heterostructures have attracted significant attention for a variety of nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. At the atomically thin limit, the material characteristics and functionalities are dominated by surface chemistry and interface coupling. Therefore, methods for comprehensively characterizing and precisely controlling surfaces and interfaces are required to realize the full technological potential of 2D materials. Here, the surface and interface properties that govern the performance of 2D materials are introduced. Then the experimental approaches that resolve surface and interface phenomena down to the atomic scale, as well as strategies that allow tuning and optimization of interfacial interactions in van der Waals heterostructures, are systematically reviewed. Finally, a future outlook that delineates the remaining challenges and opportunities for 2D material interface characterization and control is presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional layered materials can stack into new material systems, with van der Waals interaction between the adjacent constituent layers. This stacking process of two-dimensional atomic layers creates a new degree of freedom—interlayer interface between two adjacent layers—that can be independently studied and tuned from the intralayer degree of freedom. In such heterostructures, the physical properties are largely determined by the vdW interaction between the individual layers, i.e., interlayer coupling, which can be effectively tuned by a number of means. In this review, we summarize and discuss a number of such approaches, including stacking order, electric field, intercalation, and pressure, with both their experimental demonstrations and theoretical predictions. A comprehensive overview of the modulation on structural, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties by these four approaches are also presented. We conclude this review by discussing several prospective research directions in 2D heterostructures field, including fundamental physics study, property tuning techniques, and future applications.

Abstract:Since the first successful synthesis of graphene just over a decade ago, a variety of two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., transition metal-dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron-nitride, etc.) have been discovered. Among the many unique and attractive properties of 2D materials, mechanical properties play important roles in manufacturing, integration and performance for their potential applications. Mechanics is indispensable in the study of mechanical properties, both experimentally and theoretically. The coupling between the mechanical and other physical properties (thermal, electronic, optical) is also of great interest in exploring novel applications, where mechanics has to be combined with condensed matter physics to establish a scalable theoretical framework. Moreover, mechanical interactions between 2D materials and various substrate materials are essential for integrated device applications of 2D materials, for which the mechanics of interfaces (adhesion and friction) has to be developed for the 2D materials. Here we review recent theoretical and experimental works related to mechanics and mechanical properties of 2D materials. While graphene is the most studied 2D material to date, we expect continual growth of interest in the mechanics of other 2D materials beyond graphene.

Abstract:Heterostructures, such as van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, provide a versatile platform for engineering the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, spanning electronics, mechanics, optics, as well as electron-phonon couplings. Furthermore, vdW heterostructures, which are composed of metal/semiconductor or semiconductor/semiconductor combinations, not only maintain the unique properties of their individual constituents but also exhibit tunable physical and chemical properties that can be externally adjusted through strain, heat, and electric fields. These externally tunable properties offer significant advances in the fields of solid-state devices and renewable energy applications. Additionally, 2D material-based heterostructures, such as those composed of 0D clusters or quantum dots, as well as 1D nanotubes/wires in combination with 2D materials, also show immense potential for advancing next-generation nanodevices. The vast design space of vdW heterostructures enables their versatile applications spanning numerous fields, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, photocatalysis, solar cells, photodetectors, and so on. In the Special Issue of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, entitled "Two-dimensional Materials-based Heterostructures for Next-generation Nanodevices", we have gathered a comprehensive collection of 14 articles, presenting the latest achievements in the fields of designing novel 2D materials and 2D heterostructures. Below, we have briefly condensed the essential research findings from these studies.

Abstract:Anisotropic mechanics of van der Waals (vdWs) materials offers opportunity to peel off individual atomic layers, initiating a two‐dimensional (2D) revolution in fields of materials science, physics and chemistry. The elasticity, bending and fracture strength of most of their 2D derivatives are also orientation‐dependent, which not only determines the reliability of devices based on 2D materials but also offering a vast playground for atomic manufacturing with tunable functions. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the anisotropic mechanical properties of 2D materials is imminent. In this review, the anisotropic mechanical properties of 2D materials are summarized in attempt to capture the current progress in this field, as well as the route towards their applications. Following a brief discussion of the anisotropic lattice structures of 2D materials, we discuss unique experimental methodologies that have been developed to characterize their anisotropic mechanics. Then, our review pivots on recent processes in anisotropic elastic, fracture, friction and bending properties of 2D materials. We further highlight unique applications of these anisotropic properties, such as mechanical fabrication of atomic precision, as well as anisotropic strain‐induced piezoelectric and band modulation. Finally, besides emphasizing the need for breakthrough in anisotropic mechanics, we suggest prospects for the developments of this field. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
