Abstract:Since the first successful synthesis of graphene just over a decade ago, a variety of two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., transition metal-dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron-nitride, etc.) have been discovered. Among the many unique and attractive properties of 2D materials, mechanical properties play important roles in manufacturing, integration and performance for their potential applications. Mechanics is indispensable in the study of mechanical properties, both experimentally and theoretically. The coupling between the mechanical and other physical properties (thermal, electronic, optical) is also of great interest in exploring novel applications, where mechanics has to be combined with condensed matter physics to establish a scalable theoretical framework. Moreover, mechanical interactions between 2D materials and various substrate materials are essential for integrated device applications of 2D materials, for which the mechanics of interfaces (adhesion and friction) has to be developed for the 2D materials. Here we review recent theoretical and experimental works related to mechanics and mechanical properties of 2D materials. While graphene is the most studied 2D material to date, we expect continual growth of interest in the mechanics of other 2D materials beyond graphene.

Abstract:<p>Two‐dimensional (2D) materials have great potential in the fields of flexible electronics and photoelectronic devices due to their unique properties derived by special structures. The study of the mechanical properties of 2D materials plays an important role in next‐generation flexible mechanical electronic device applications. Unfortunately, traditional experiment models and measurement methods are not suitable for 2D materials due to their atomically ultrathin thickness, which limits both the theoretical research and practical value of the 2D materials. In this review, we briefly summarize the characterization of mechanical properties of 2D materials by in situ probe nanoindentation experiments, and discuss the effect of thickness, grain boundary, and interlayer interactions. We introduce the strain‐induced effect on electrical properties and optical properties of 2D materials. Then, we generalize the mechanical sensors based on various 2D materials and their future potential applications in flexible and wearable electronic devices. Finally, we discuss the state of the art for the mechanical properties of 2D materials and their opportunities and challenges in both basic research and practical applications. </p>

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been demonstrated as promising building blocks in future electronic and their mechanical properties are quite important for various applications. Due to their atomic thickness and planar nature, the investigation of the mechanical properties and related atomic mechanism are quite challenging. This review focuses on the recently developed in situ techniques based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) in characterization of the mechanical properties of 2D materials. Insitu methods used for studying their elastic properties, fracture behavior, andsurface/interface energy are introduced in detail. Specifically, the AFM indentation test and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device are generally used to investigate the elastic properties; the manipulator based methods show their flexibility in studying the fracture, adhesion, cleavage, and friction properties; atomic level fracture mechanism can be revealed with in situ high resolution TEM (HRTEM); the pressurized blister test and the buckle/wrinkle based methods are widely used to measure the surface/interface properties. Moreover, the influence of sample preparation process, defects and layer numbers to their mechanical properties are also discussed. Finally, the extensions of above methods to investigate the strain-modulated physical properties of 2D materials are introduced.

Abstract:Anisotropic mechanics of van der Waals (vdWs) materials offers opportunity to peel off individual atomic layers, initiating a two‐dimensional (2D) revolution in fields of materials science, physics and chemistry. The elasticity, bending and fracture strength of most of their 2D derivatives are also orientation‐dependent, which not only determines the reliability of devices based on 2D materials but also offering a vast playground for atomic manufacturing with tunable functions. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the anisotropic mechanical properties of 2D materials is imminent. In this review, the anisotropic mechanical properties of 2D materials are summarized in attempt to capture the current progress in this field, as well as the route towards their applications. Following a brief discussion of the anisotropic lattice structures of 2D materials, we discuss unique experimental methodologies that have been developed to characterize their anisotropic mechanics. Then, our review pivots on recent processes in anisotropic elastic, fracture, friction and bending properties of 2D materials. We further highlight unique applications of these anisotropic properties, such as mechanical fabrication of atomic precision, as well as anisotropic strain‐induced piezoelectric and band modulation. Finally, besides emphasizing the need for breakthrough in anisotropic mechanics, we suggest prospects for the developments of this field. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials represented by graphene have unique 2D layered structure,exhibiting excellent physical,chemical,electronic and optical properties for a wide spectra of applications.Since the discovery of graphene,2D materials have attracted extensive attentions in various fields.Based on the composition of 2D materials,they were divided into five categories:element,nonmetallic compound,metallic compound,salt and organic.The structural characteristics of 2D materials were described,the preparation methods,as well as their properties and potential applications in electronics/optoelectronics,catalysis,energy storageand conversion,sensors and environmental remediation were summarized.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention in nanomaterials research because of their unique physical and chemical properties. This paper examines the research background, core properties, main application areas, and future prospects of 2D materials. Through a systematic literature review and case studies, this paper summarizes the main advances and challenges in current 2D material research. The research methodology includes a literature review and case study analysis, aiming to uncover the potential of 2D materials in nanoelectronics, optoelectronic devices, energy storage, and biomedicine. The research questions address the fundamental properties of 2D materials, their practical applications, and strategies to overcome existing challenges. The results indicate that while 2D materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit excellent electronic, optical, and mechanical properties, they still encounter significant challenges in material preparation, performance tuning, and environmental safety. This paper proposes potential solutions and predicts the future applications of 2D materials in emerging technologies. The conclusion asserts that with the continuous discovery of novel 2D materials and technological advancements, 2D materials will play a crucial role in science and industry.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have dominated nanoscience for the last two decades. Among all 2D materials, graphene, MoS2, and h-BN are extremely popular and have been tentatively scaled up to fabricate nanocomposites, energy storage devices, flexible electronics, etc., ex situ and in situ mechanical characterization of 2D crystals can help us understand their mechanical behavior and measure their mechanical properties, which are of great significance in both fundamental science and practical engineering. To date, a great effort has been devoted to both theoretical and experimental mechanics with a focus on unveiling mechanical behaviors and quantifying mechanical properties. Beyond original research, several insightful review works have been published with a specific focus on the mechanics of 2D materials. To have a complementary contribution to the overview of the mechanics of 2D materials, we would like to review the developed experimental techniques being used to mechanically characterize 2D materials. The working mechanism and associated advantages and disadvantages of the techniques will be briefly discussed. Based on the existence of arguments in mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D crystals, and immature mechanical characterization of 2D materials, more intensive and comprehensive studies are expected toward a full understanding of these novel and promising materials.

Abstract:Research on two-dimensional (2D) materials has made tremendous progress reflecting their unique properties and promising applications. In this perspective, we review the novel concept of "2.5-dimensional (2.5D) materials", which represent new opportunities to extend the field of materials science beyond 2D materials. This concept consists of controlling van der Waals interactions and using interlayer nanospaces to synthesize new materials and explore their intriguing properties. It also includes combination with other dimensional materials, the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) architectures of 2D materials, and practical applications in our 3D everyday life. We discuss recent research based on this concept and provide future perspectives.

Abstract:Since the success of monolayer graphene exfoliation, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied due to their unique structures and unprecedented properties. Among these fascinating studies, the most predominant focus has been on their atomic structures, defects, and mechanical behaviors and properties, which serve as the basis for the practical applications of 2D materials. In this review, we first highlight the atomic structures of various 2D materials and the structural and energy features of some common defects. We then summarize the recent advances made in experimental, computational, and theoretical studies on the mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D materials. We mainly emphasized the underlying deformation and fracture mechanisms and the influences of various defects on mechanical behaviors and properties, which boost the emergence and development of topological design and defect engineering. We also further introduce the piezoelectric and flexoelectric behaviors of specific 2D materials to address the coupling between mechanical and electronic properties in 2D materials and the interactions between 2D crystals and substrates or between different 2D monolayers in heterostructures. Finally, we provide a perspective and outlook for future studies on the mechanical behaviors and properties of 2D materials.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of high quality two-dimensional (2D) crystals offers exciting opportunities for new material design, such as the combination of extremely high in-plane stiffness and bending flexibility, compared to existing three-dimensional (3D) material forms. By combining different 2D crystals vertically or by in-plane stitching, unusual properties can arise due to nonlinear mechanical interactions between them. Van der Waals forces between vertically stacked crystals give rise to a wide range of useful phenomena such as layer-number dependent friction, superlubricity, creasing, and spatial modulation of elastic properties through Moiré structures. In the present article, we review and explain the mechanical behavior of 2D materials and heterostructures (graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides). Linear elastic properties of these 2D crystalline monolayers are well-studied using membrane nanoindentation towards their application in nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) devices. On the other hand, a more thorough understanding of friction, fracture and stress transfer mechanisms between 2D layers and with the substrate or matrix is still lacking. More in-depth understanding of geometry-dependent behavior could enable the application of these materials in multi-functional composites. We discuss emerging opportunities achievable by assembling 2D heterostructures to tailor their mechanical behavior, and perhaps even break the traditional bounds limiting the properties of the bulk homostructures. Furthermore, to accelerate the design and discovery of the infinite combinations of new 2D heterostructures, we construct a crowd-sourced searchable online database to record and exploit the studies reporting on the complex arrangements of these crystals.

Abstract:2D materials have unique intrinsic properties. The properties of 2D materials are tunable. Layer size produces significant variation in properties. Ductile failure in 2D materials is very rare. Transition metal‐dichalcogenides are superior to graphene. In the modern age of nanotechnology, the discovery of graphene has opened up the way to study and develop of several novel 2D materials. The unique physical and chemical properties of 2D materials have enhanced their research, making them superior to the commercial bulk materials used in various applications. Efforts have been made in the current study to present an overview of the intrinsic properties of these materials. Furthermore, synthesis and applications are also reviewed and discussed. Finally, the future outlook of 2D materials is discussed to enhance the research and performance of these materials, which can result in broader applications benefitting the electrical and electronics industries and society. Intensive research into 2D materials is expected to lead to the discovery of new materials with enhanced properties that will benefit the industry and society at large.

Abstract:Compared with bulk materials, atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) crystals possess a range of unique mechanical properties, including relatively high in-plane stiffness and large bending flexibility. The atomic 2D building blocks can be reassembled into precisely designed heterogeneous composite structures of various geometries with customized mechanical sensing behaviors. Due to their small specific density, high flexibility, and environmental adaptability, mechanical sensors based on 2D materials can conform to soft and curved surfaces, thus providing suitable solutions for functional applications in future wearable devices. In this review, we summarize the latest developments in mechanical sensors based on 2D materials from the perspective of function-oriented applications. First, typical mechanical sensing mechanisms are introduced. Second, we attempt to establish a correspondence between typical structure designs and the performance/multi-functions of the devices. Afterward, several particularly promising areas for potential applications are discussed, following which we present perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities.
