Abstract:Introducing Semantic Web method into online social network is an efficient way to promote the application of it. However, current framework of FOAF does not define many important aspects of online social network, which hinder its fully application. As a result, in this paper we extend the FOAF vocabulary with the support for SNS, social tie, resource, and access control, and then build web services based on it. The semantic model based on our extension provides base for further development of online social network.

Abstract:This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using Semantic Web paradigm, especially the Web Ontology Language (OWL), for functional design knowledge representation during functional modeling in a multi-agent distributed design environment. An ontology-based functional modeling framework is proposed as a prelude to a meaningful agent communication for collaborative functional modeling. Formal knowledge representation in OWL format extends traditional functional modeling with capabilities of knowledge sharing and distributed problem solving, and is used as a content language within the FIPA ACL (Agent Communication Language) messages in a proposed multi-agent architecture. The ontological enhancement to functional modeling facilitates the implementation of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) in functional design for Semantic Web applications.
Towards Instant Automatic Model Refinement Based on OCL

Abstract:Model refinement is a complex task. It is difficult for developers to refine models all by themselves. A good modeling tool should not only do routine refinement work for developers, but also guide them to make decisions during the refinement process. Such refinement work is best done by modeling tools instantly while developers refine models, to provide timely assistance. In this paper, we present a general approach for meta-model designers or experts in different fields to define and describe such automatic refinement work by rules, and these rules can instruct the modeling tool to do the refinement work instantly, whenever the developers modify the model. The automatic refinement rules in our approach are based on OCL, and their semantics and behaviors are formally defined by using Dijkstra's guarded commands, so the rules are compact, unambiguous and reliable to use. We have also implemented the editor and the interpreter for the automatic refinement rules, and integrated them into our own modeling tool to support our approach.

Abstract:Formal specification is a basis for rigorous software implementation. VDM-SL is a formal specification language with an extensive executable subset. Successful cases of VDM-family including VDM-SL have shown that producing a well-tested executable specification can reduce the cost of the implementation phase. This paper introduces and discusses the reversed order of specification and implementation. The development of a multi-agent simulation language called \remobidyc is described and examined as a case study of defining a formal specification after initial implementation and reflecting the specification into the implementation code.

Abstract:We propose a formal framework that supports a model of agent-based Virtual Organisations (VOs) for service grids and provides an associated operational model for the creation of VOs. The framework is intended to be used for describing different service grid applications based on multiple agents and, as a result, it abstracts away from any realisation choices of the service grid application, the agents involved to support the applications and their interactions. Within the proposed framework VOs are seen as emerging from societies of agents, where agents are abstractly characterised by goals and roles they can play within VOs. In turn, VOs are abstractly characterised by the agents participating in them with specific roles, as well as the workflow of services and corresponding contracts suitable for achieving the goals of the participating agents. We illustrate the proposed framework with an earth observation scenario.

Abstract:In recent years, many researchers in the programming language and formal methods communities have been investigating weakest precondition (WP) semantics for object-oriented (OO) programs. Based on a modified version of Separation Logic, OO Separation Logic, we develop in this article a WP semantics for an OO language with most important object-oriented features including subtypes, visibility, inheritance, dynamic binding and reference types. Giving a clear comparison to existing work, we conclude that the WP semantics defined here captures the essentials of object-orientation. Further, in the WP semantic model, we define program transformation in terms of refinement. With some case studies, we show that, supported by the semantics defined, it is easier to model many practical program transformations in a reasonable way. keywords: Object Orientation, Weakest Precondition, Separation Logic, Semantics, Refinement

Abstract:Inter-organization collaboration is recently acknowledged as an important vision of the grid research, however there are not many well implemented system and not many applications that are in large-scale real use either. This paper present a VO(Virtual Organization) Ontology Model Framework that simplifies the Inter-organization collaboration of the future grids. Thanks to the semantic technology, we can develop semantic based model framework to implement interoperability even in heterogeneous environments. The framework, consisted of a bunch of ontologies, definitely defines and describes which attributes of the VOs should define. We define and implement the semantic model of Virtual Organizations and Grid Resources and introduce the basic concepts and mechanisms to represent them and apply them to the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CATCM). The prototype presented in this paper is also applicable to other VO application projects.

Abstract:Enterprise modeling deals with the increasing complexity of processes and systems by operationalizing model content and by linking complementary models and languages, thus amplifying the model-value beyond mere comprehensible pictures. To enable this amplification and turn models into computer-processable structures a comprehensive formalization is needed. This paper presents a generic formalism based on typed first-order logic and provides a perspective on the potential and benefits arising for a variety of research issues in conceptual modeling. We define modeling languages as formal languages with a signature $\Sigma$ - comprising object types, relation types, and attributes through types and function symbols - and a set of constraints. Three cases studies are included to show the effectiveness of the approach. Applying the formalism to the next level in the hierarchy of models we create M2FOL, a formal modeling language for metamodels. We show that M2FOL is self-describing and therefore complete the formalization of the full four-layer metamodeling stack. On the basis of our generic formalism applicable to arbitrary modeling languages we examine three current research topics - language interleaving & consistency, operations on models, and automatic translation of formalizations to platform-specific code - and how to approach them with the proposed formalism. This shows that the rich knowledge stack on formal languages in logic offers new tools for old problems.

Agent-Based Approach Towards Ontology Refinement In Virtual Enterprises

Abstract:The vision of ontology research has recently drawn considerable attention, both from academia and industry. One of the essential research issues with ontology is how to describe changes during its evolving cycle, especially in virtual enterprises which exist as a temporary network of geographically distributed partners that assemble to achieve a goal. Ontology refinement is a crucial component in ontology evolution. Description logics are very useful for defining and maintaining ontologies, including ontology consistency checking. In this paper, a taxonomy is adopted to describe ontologies with an intuitive ontology definition formula. Based on the ontology definition, a novel agent-based approach is presented which deals with ontology refinement at run-time in virtual enterprises. We demonstrate the method with a running example by using the JADE platform.

Abstract:ODRL is a popular XML-based language for stating the conditions under which resources can be accessed legitimately. The language is described in English and, as a result, agreements written in ODRL are open to interpretation. To address this problem, we propose a formal semantics for a representative fragment of the language. We use this semantics to determine precisely when a permission is implied by a set of ODRL statements and show that answering such questions is a decidable NP-hard problem. Finally, we define a tractable fragment of ODRL that is also fairly expressive.

Abstract:VoxML is a modeling language used to map natural language expressions into real-time visualizations using commonsense semantic knowledge of objects and events. Its utility has been demonstrated in embodied simulation environments and in agent-object interactions in situated multimodal human-agent collaboration and communication. It introduces the notion of object affordance (both Gibsonian and Telic) from HRI and robotics, as well as the concept of habitat (an object's context of use) for interactions between a rational agent and an object. This paper aims to specify VoxML as an annotation language in general abstract terms. It then shows how it works on annotating linguistic data that express visually perceptible human-object interactions. The annotation structures thus generated will be interpreted against the enriched minimal model created by VoxML as a modeling language while supporting the modeling purposes of VoxML linguistically.

Abstract:Model transformation and its automation have been the core and major challenge of MDA; consequently OMG issued a QVT RFP to standardize its process. Though many approaches have been proposed, their efficiency cannot be validated and their application scope is still limited. The task of providing a reliable solution to model transformation is critical. This paper proposes a formal language for model transformation specification to achieve automatic implementation. The foundation of our work is explained and some basic elements of the language are defined. A concrete transformation example from UML 1.4 models to UML 2.0 models is presented using the formalism.

Refinement for Ontology Evolution in Virtual Enterprises

Abstract:Virtual enterprise is based on the premise that work should be done where it can be done most optimally. In virtual enterprises, geographical boundaries merge seamlessly. It enables organisations to act in a way of flexibility and ability to adapt to rapid changes on the fly. However, different par-ties in a virtual enterprise Must understand each other before they go further details in business. Ontologies are such kinds of ideal baselines to assist parties to communicate. One of the essential research issues with ontology is how to deal with changes during their evolving cycle. Therefore, ontology refinement is a crucial component in ontology evolution. This paper presents a taxonomy structure focusing on the is-a relations. In particular, the concept of closeness measurement is introduced based on the "distance" estimation. An extended cluster analysis process is provided. According to the algorithm presented, a new concept is generated according to its attributes. Additionally, the refinement mechanisms for primitive operations are proposed. Unlike some other ontology refinement mechanisms which leave ontology consistency checking to human users after modification, our method emphasises the importance of consistency checking by applying description logics which is demonstrated based on the proposed ontology.

Abstract:Multi-agent models are a suitable starting point to model complex social interactions. However, as the complexity of the systems increase, we argue that novel modeling approaches are needed that can deal with inter-dependencies at different levels of society, where many heterogeneous parties (software agents, robots, humans) are interacting and reacting to each other. In this paper, we present a formalization of a social framework for agents based on the concept of Social Practices as high level specifications of normal (expected) behavior in a given social context. We argue that social practices facilitate the practical reasoning of agents in standard social interactions. Thus they can support deliberations for complex situations just like conventions and norms. However, they also come with a social context that gives handles for social planning and deliberation in top of the normal functional deliberation. The main goal of this paper is to give a formalization of social practices that can be used as a basis for implementations and defining precise structures within which social learning can take place.

Abstract:Traditionally, practitioners use formal methods predominately for one half of the quality-assurance process: verification (do we build the software right?). The other half - validation (do we build the right software?) - has been given comparatively little attention. While verification is the core of refinement-based formal methods, where each new refinement step must preserve all properties of its abstract model, validation is usually postponed until the latest stages of the development, when models can be automatically executed. Thus mistakes in requirements or in their interpretation are caught too late: usually at the end of the development process. In this paper, we present a novel approach to check compliance between requirements and their formal refinement-based specification during the earlier stages of development. Our proposed approach - "validation obligations" - is based on the simple idea that both verification and validation are an integral part of all refinement steps of a system.

Abstract:[Context and motivation] Stakeholder requirements are notoriously informal, vague, ambiguous and often unattainable. The requirements engineering problem is to formalize these requirements and then transform them through a systematic process into a formal specification that can be handed over to designers for downstream development. [Question/problem] This paper proposes a framework for transforming informal requirements to formal ones, and then to a specification. [Principal ideas/results] The framework consists of an ontology of requirements, a formal requirements modeling language for representing both functional and non-functional requirements, as well as a rich set of refinement operators whereby requirements are incrementally transformed into a formal, practically satisfiable and measurable specification. [Contributions] Our proposal includes a systematic, tool-supported methodology for conducting this transformation. For evaluation, we have applied our framework to a public requirements dataset. The results of our evaluation suggest that our ontology and modeling language are adequate for capturing requirements, and our methodology is effective in handling requirements in practice.
Weakest Precondition Semantics for OO Programs : A Separation Logic Approach

Abstract:For the object oriented paradigm, providing a relatively rich model language equipped with formal semantics for practical reasoning is an important and long-standing open problem. In this work, μJava, a sufficient large subset of sequential Java is defined. An OO Separation Logic with pure reference semantic model is developed. Facilitated by this logic, the Weakest Precondition (WP) semantics for μJavais defined, and its soundness and completeness are proved. As far as we know, this is the first work on the completeness of such a semantics. Some key properties are shown still hold, especially the frame rule that is important for local reasoning. Additionally, we find some properties absent in the original Separation Logic, but important for OO reasoning. We introduce Hoare Triple based on the WP semantics. As the application and illustration of how the WP semantics serve the verification of OO programs, some examples are given, with the class invariant proof in a case study. We anticipate that this work would be helpful for the disciplines of OO software verification and refinement.
