Abstract:We propose a formal framework that supports a model of agent-based Virtual Organisations (VOs) for service grids and provides an associated operational model for the creation of VOs. The framework is intended to be used for describing different service grid applications based on multiple agents and, as a result, it abstracts away from any realisation choices of the service grid application, the agents involved to support the applications and their interactions. Within the proposed framework VOs are seen as emerging from societies of agents, where agents are abstractly characterised by goals and roles they can play within VOs. In turn, VOs are abstractly characterised by the agents participating in them with specific roles, as well as the workflow of services and corresponding contracts suitable for achieving the goals of the participating agents. We illustrate the proposed framework with an earth observation scenario.

A VOC Based Approach to Support Virtual Organizations.

Abstract:Employing IT as the key enable technology virtual organization (VO) is primarily characterized as being a network of independent, geographically dispersed organisations (member organization) providing electronic services via Internet. To align these services effectively, one of the main challenges is to model cooperation in VO and provide correspondent management tools. Here we present a VOC (VO Structure-Organization Resource-Character) approach to model and run VO. VOC consists of three models. VO Structure model describes how VO functions in terms of VO Role (VR), Protocol; Organization Resource model describes potential service providers (potential member organization) capable participate VO. Character Model describes dynamic binding relationship between VO role and member organization. Following the VOC model, a platform supporting the design, administration, and running of VOC is given.

Abstract:Inter-organization collaboration is recently acknowledged as an important vision of the grid research, however there are not many well implemented system and not many applications that are in large-scale real use either. This paper present a VO(Virtual Organization) Ontology Model Framework that simplifies the Inter-organization collaboration of the future grids. Thanks to the semantic technology, we can develop semantic based model framework to implement interoperability even in heterogeneous environments. The framework, consisted of a bunch of ontologies, definitely defines and describes which attributes of the VOs should define. We define and implement the semantic model of Virtual Organizations and Grid Resources and introduce the basic concepts and mechanisms to represent them and apply them to the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CATCM). The prototype presented in this paper is also applicable to other VO application projects.

Abstract:In order to pursue their objectives, the groups of agents seem to be well organized according to predefined structures and unambiguously defined concepts. At the same time, the interaction presents some dynamic aspects, that is, the virtual organizations (VO) undergo a life cycle from the objectives formation to the task division, task allocation, plans formation, negotiations, contracts formation, and the final VO dissolvement or evolvement under exceptions. Although E-institutions provide facilitation to the former issues, the facilitation of VO in different stages is still blurred. Hence, this paper proposes a hybrid E-institution model including the static organization structure aspect and the dynamic aspect, provide assistance to the agent interactions. On the one hand, the E-institutions are modelled statically to make the agent cooperation trustable and predictable in terms of ontologies, behavior norms, and organization structure. On the other hand, the E-institutions keep repositories of instantiated (dynamic) information, provide services to facilitate the dynamic VO in different stages. Also, this paper presents explicitly formal descriptions of the static organization structure, dynamic information and institutional services to different VO stages.

Abstract:Registries provide a mechanism with which VO applications can discover and select resources - first and foremost data and services - that are relevant for a particular scientific problem. This specification defines an interface for searching this resource metadata based on the IVOA's TAP protocol. It specifies a set of tables that comprise a useful subset of the information contained in the registry records, as well as the table's data content in terms of the XML VOResource data model. The general design of the system is geared towards allowing easy authoring of queries.

Abstract:Based on Web Services and grid technology, a structure of virtual organization (VO) in favor of co-operative services was studied, and an entity model of members of Grid-based VO and a really dynamic model of VO applicable to Grid Technology-an abstract model of VO holding with wide world/region scheduling service center was constructed. According to this model, a practical network model of VO structure based on Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA) was constructed finally, a key technology of VO co-operative service was brought forward and solved, and rules of task scheduling satisfied with both network services required and the least service cost was brought forward.

Abstract:Virtual Observatory (VO) is a collection of interoperating data archives and software tools. Taking advantages of the latest information technologies, it aims to provide a data-intensively online research environment for astronomers all around the world. A large number of high-qualified astronomical software packages and libraries are powerful and easy of use, and have been widely used by astronomers for many years. Integrating those toolkits into the VO system is a necessary and important task for the VO developers. VO architecture greatly depends on Grid and Web services, consequently the general VO integration route is "Java Ready - Grid Ready - VO Ready". In the paper, we discuss the importance of VO integration for existing toolkits and discuss the possible solutions. We introduce two efforts in the field from China-VO project, "gImageMagick" and " Galactic abundance gradients statistical research under grid environment". We also discuss what additional work should be done to convert Grid service to VO service.

Abstract:The Virtual Materials Marketplace (VIMMP) project, which develops an open platform for providing and accessing services related to materials modelling, is presented with a focus on its ontology development and data technology aspects. Within VIMMP, a system of marketplace-level ontologies is developed to characterize services, models, and interactions between users; the European Materials and Modelling Ontology (EMMO) is employed as a top-level ontology. The ontologies are used to annotate data that are stored in the ZONTAL Space component of VIMMP and to support the ingest and retrieval of data and metadata at the VIMMP marketplace frontend.

Abstract:An application that queries or consumes descriptions of VO resources must be able to recognize a resource's support for standard IVOA protocols. This specification describes how to describe a service that supports any of the four fundamental data access protocols -- Simple Cone Search (SCS), Simple Image Access (SIA), Simple Spectral Access (SSA), Simple Line Access (SLA) -- using the VOResource XML encoding standard. A key part of this specification is the set of VOResource XML extension schemas that define new metadata that are specific to those protocols. This document describes in particular rules for describing such services within the context of IVOA Registries and data discovery as well as the VO Standard Interface (VOSI) and service self-description. In particular, this document spells out the essential markup needed to identify support for a standard protocol and the base URL required to access the interface that supports that protocol.

Abstract:Web semantic access in specific domains calls for specialized search engines with enhanced semantic querying and indexing capacities, which pertain both to information retrieval (IR) and to information extraction (IE). A rich linguistic analysis is required either to identify the relevant semantic units to index and weight them according to linguistic specific statistical distribution, or as the basis of an information extraction process. Recent developments make Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques reliable enough to process large collections of documents and to enrich them with semantic annotations. This paper focuses on the design and the development of a text processing platform, Ogmios, which has been developed in the ALVIS project. The Ogmios platform exploits existing NLP modules and resources, which may be tuned to specific domains and produces linguistically annotated documents. We show how the three constraints of genericity, domain semantic awareness and performance can be handled all together.

Abstract:The IVOA Provenance Data model defines entities, agents and activities as container classes to describe the provenance of datasets, with the executed tasks and responsibilities attached to agents. It also provides a set of classes to describe the activities type and their configuration template, as well as the configuration applied effectively during the execution of a task. Here we highlight lessons learned in the implementation of the CDS ProvHiPS service distributing provenance metadata for the HST HiPS data collections, and for the HST archive original images used to produce the HiPS tiles. ProvHiPS is based on the ProvTAP protocol, the emerging TAP standard for distributing provenance metadata. ProvTAP queries may rapidly become very complex. Various graph representation strategies, including ad hoc solutions, triplestore and SQL CTE have been considered and are discussed shortly.

Abstract:We present VOICE, a novel approach to science communication that connects large language models' (LLM) conversational capabilities with interactive exploratory visualization. VOICE introduces several innovative technical contributions that drive our conversational visualization framework. Our foundation is a pack-of-bots that can perform specific tasks, such as assigning tasks, extracting instructions, and generating coherent content. We employ fine-tuning and prompt engineering techniques to tailor bots' performance to their specific roles and accurately respond to user queries. Our interactive text-to-visualization method generates a flythrough sequence matching the content explanation. Besides, natural language interaction provides capabilities to navigate and manipulate the 3D models in real-time. The VOICE framework can receive arbitrary voice commands from the user and respond verbally, tightly coupled with corresponding visual representation with low latency and high accuracy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by applying it to the molecular visualization domain: analyzing three 3D molecular models with multi-scale and multi-instance attributes. We finally evaluate VOICE with the identified educational experts to show the potential of our approach. OV-VG: A benchmark for open-vocabulary visual grounding

Abstract:Open-vocabulary learning has emerged as a cutting-edge research area, particularly in light of the widespread adoption of vision-based foundational models. Its primary objective is to comprehend novel concepts that are not encompassed within a predefined vocabulary. One key facet of this endeavor is Visual Grounding (VG), which entails locating a specific region within an image based on a corresponding language description. While current foundational models excel at various visual language tasks, there's a noticeable absence of models specifically tailored for open-vocabulary visual grounding (OV-VG). This research endeavor introduces novel and challenging OV tasks, namely Open-Vocabulary Visual Grounding (OV-VG) and Open-Vocabulary Phrase Localization (OV-PL). The overarching aim is to establish connections between language descriptions and the localization of novel objects. To facilitate this, we have curated a comprehensive annotated benchmark, encompassing 7,272 OV-VG images (comprising 10,000 instances) and 1,000 OV-PL images. In our pursuit of addressing these challenges, we delved into various baseline methodologies rooted in existing open-vocabulary object detection (OV-D), VG, and phrase localization (PL) frameworks. Surprisingly, we discovered that state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods often falter in diverse scenarios. Consequently, we developed a novel framework that integrates two critical components: Text-Image Query Selection (TIQS) and Language-Guided Feature Attention (LGFA). These modules are designed to bolster the recognition of novel categories and enhance the alignment between visual and linguistic information. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed framework, which consistently attains SOTA performance across the OV-VG task. Additionally, ablation studies provide further evidence of the effectiveness of our innovative models. Codes and datasets will be made publicly available at https://github.com/cv516Buaa/OV-VG .

Abstract:This paper summarizes the following two tasks participated by VIREO group: instance search and semantic indexing. We will present our approaches and analyze the results obtained in TRECVID 2014 benchmark evaluation [1]. Instance Search (INS): We submitted seven runs derived from the following three systems (1) the baseline: our last year’s best system; (2) the normalization: the method refining the normalization terms for both query and reference images; (3) the video agumented query: the original image query is augmented with the video example. -F A VIREO 7: Baseline using the first image example only. Our baseline system is based on the Bag-of-Words (BoW) model [2], augmented with Hamming Embeding [3], spatial verification via Delaunay Triangulation [4] and context weighting via “Stare” model [5]. -F B VIREO 6: Baseline using the first two image examples only. -F C VIREO 5: Baseline using the first three image examples only. -F D VIREO 2: Baseline using all the four image examples. -F D VIREO 3: Baseline + normalization method, using all the four image examples. -F E VIREO 4: Baseline + video augmented query, using all the four image examples as well as the video examples where the query images are extracted. -F E VIREO 1: Late fusion of the results from all our systems, including the baseline, normalization and video augmented query. This run also queries with all the four images and video examples. Semantic Indexing (SIN): This year, we experimented various features including the visual, motion and audio features in concept training. Specifically, state-of-the-art motion feature: Improved Trajectories [6] and aduio features: MFCC, LPC, LSF, OBSI [7] are involved in this year’s benchmark evaluation. We submitted two runs to test these newly added features: -2 BM D VIREO.14 1: Late fusion of the detection scores using visual features. -2 BM D VIREO.14 2: Late fusion of the detection scores using visual, motion and audio features.
