Abstract:Registries provide a mechanism with which VO applications can discover and select resources - first and foremost data and services - that are relevant for a particular scientific problem. This specification defines an interface for searching this resource metadata based on the IVOA's TAP protocol. It specifies a set of tables that comprise a useful subset of the information contained in the registry records, as well as the table's data content in terms of the XML VOResource data model. The general design of the system is geared towards allowing easy authoring of queries.

Abstract:The International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) developed numerous interoperability standards during the last several years. Most of them are quite simple to implement from the technical point of view and even contain "SIMPLE" in the title. Does it mean that it is also simple to build a working VO resource using those standards? Yes and no. "Yes" because the standards are indeed simple, and "no" because usually one needs to implement a lot more than it was thought in the beginning of the project so the time management of the team becomes difficult. In our presentation we will start with a basic case of a simple spectral data collection. Then we will describe several examples of small" technologically advanced VO resources built in CDS and VO-Paris and will show that many standards are hidden from managers' eyes at the initial stage of the project development. The projects will be: (1) the GalMer database providing access to the results of numerical simulations of galaxy interactions; (2) the full spectrum fitting service that allows one to extract internal kinematics and stellar populations from spectra of galaxies available in the VO. We conclude that: (a) with the existing set of IVOA standards one can already build very advanced VO-enabled archives and tools useful for scientists; (b) managers have to be very careful when estimating the project development timelines for VO-enabled resources.

Abstract:This paper describes version 2 of the OI Exchange Format (OIFITS), the standard for exchanging calibrated data from optical (visible/infrared) interferometers. This IAU-endorsed standard has been in use for 10 years at most of the past and current optical interferometer projects, including COAST, NPOI, IOTA, CHARA, VLTI, PTI and the Keck interferometer. Software is available for reading, writing and merging OI Exchange Format files. This version 2 provides definitions of additional data tables (e.g. for polarisation measurements), addressing the needs of future interferometric instruments. Also included are data columns for a more rigorous description of measurement errors and their correlations. In that, this document is a step towards the design of a common data model for optical interferometry. Finally, the main OIFITS header is expanded with several new keywords summarising the content to allow data base searches.

Abstract:This white paper is the product of a joint Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)-Europeana working group organized to develop minimum rights statement metadata standards for organizations that contribute to DPLA and Europeana. This white paper deals specifically with the technical infrastructure of a common namespace (rightsstatements.org) that hosts the rights statements to be used by (at minimum) the DPLA and Europeana. These recommendations for a common technical infrastructure for rights statements outline a simple, flexible, and extensible framework to host the rights statements at rightsstatements.org. This white paper specifically outlines the management of rights statements as linked open data. The rights statements are published according to Best Practices for Publishing RDF Vocabularies. They are encoded into dereferenceable URIs, express further information encoded in RDF, and link to existing vocabularies and standards. The rights statements adhere to expressions of existing rights vocabularies. Furthermore the paper reviews the publication and implementation to make the rights statements available through human-readable web pages augmented with machine-readable formats.

Abstract:Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) is widely used in the acute care setting for acute respiratory failure (ARF) across a variety of aetiologies. This document provides European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society recommendations for the clinical application of NIV based on the most current literature.The guideline committee was composed of clinicians, methodologists and experts in the field of NIV. The committee developed recommendations based on the GRADE (Grading, Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) methodology for each actionable question. The GRADE Evidence to Decision framework in the guideline development tool was used to generate recommendations. A number of topics were addressed using technical summaries without recommendations and these are discussed in the supplementary material.This guideline committee developed recommendations for 11 actionable questions in a PICO (population-intervention-comparison-outcome) format, all addressing the use of NIV for various aetiologies of ARF. The specific conditions where recommendations were made include exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, de novo hypoxaemic respiratory failure, immunocompromised patients, chest trauma, palliation, post-operative care, weaning and post-extubation.This document summarises the current state of knowledge regarding the role of NIV in ARF. Evidence-based recommendations provide guidance to relevant stakeholders.

The Very-high-energy Open Data Format: towards a shared, open data format in very-high-energy astronomy

Abstract:In very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, the community is converging towards the use of a common open data format, called "Data formats for Gamma-ray Astronomy", for the high-level data products. This format is in use for ground-based TeV observatories like H.E.S.S., MAGIC or HAWC, some of whom plan to openly release high-level data products. These efforts are parallel to the development and use of open analysis software such as the Gammapy package. This open initiative has shown that it is possible to define common standards even without governance. With the advent of open VHE observatories (e.g. CTAO, KM3NeT) and an increase in both multi-wavelength and multi-messenger studies, such standards should evolve to support all of VHE multi-messenger astrophysics. For these reasons, a new initiative has been created to specify formats of high-level data from very and ultra high energy gamma-ray facilities and from VHE neutrino detectors. It also aims to better respect the FAIR principles and the IVOA recommendations.This communication will present the Very-high-energy Open Data Format (VODF) project that has been established by eleven VHE astroparticle facilities. Its structure, its organisation and its goal will be presented. Anchored in Open Science, our goal is to solicit comments and future contributions from the VHE astrophysics community.

Abstract:To facilitate system architecture development using DoDAF, we propose an architecture development methodology based on DoDAF 2.0 in this paper. First, based on experiences in practice, gaps between Operational Viewpoint (OV), Capability Viewpoint (CV) and System/Service Viewpoint (SV/SvcV) are analyzed. Second, to bridge the gaps, two architecture viewpoints, i.e. Information activity Viewpoint (IaV) and Capability effect Viewpoint (CeV) proposed in our previous work, are introduced. In addition, a meta-model is provided to define key architecture elements and their relationships in these six viewpoints (i.e. OV, CV, IaV, CeV, SV and SvcV). Third, via analysis of element associations in different viewpoints and models, we give a suggested process of developing system architecture using the six viewpoints and their models, including model development steps, inputs and outputs of each step. Finally, a case study is conducted by applying our methodology to describe architecture of a defense system. Results show that our methodology can effectively facilitate system architecture development and help architects (especially for information system architects) to develop architecture from OV, CV to SV and SvcV.

Abstract:This paper describes the OI (Optical Interferometry) Exchange Format, a standard for exchanging calibrated data from optical (visible/infrared) stellar interferometers. The standard is based on the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) and supports the storage of optical interferometric observables, including squared visibility and closure phase—data products not included in radio interferometry standards such as UV‐FITS. The format has already gained the support of most currently operating optical interferometer projects, including COAST, NPOI, IOTA, CHARA, VLTI, PTI, and the Keck Interferometer, and is endorsed by the IAU Working Group on Optical Interferometry. Software is available for reading, writing, and the merging of OI Exchange Format files.

Abstract:In the Virtual Observatory (VO), the Registry provides the mechanism with which users and applications discover and select resources -- typically, data and services -- that are relevant for a particular scientific problem. Even though the VO adopted technologies in particular from the bibliographic community where available, building the Registry system involved a major standardisation effort, involving about a dozen interdependent standard texts. This paper discusses the server-side aspects of the standards and their application, as regards the functional components (registries), the resource records in both format and content, the exchange of resource records between registries (harvesting), as well as the creation and management of the identifiers used in the system based on the notion of authorities. Registry record authors, registry operators or even advanced users thus receive a big picture serving as a guideline through the body of relevant standard texts. To complete this picture, we also mention common usage patterns and open issues as appropriate.

Abstract:The purpose of this document is to create a data model and its serialization for expressing generic time series data. Already existing IVOA data models are reused as much as possible. The model is also made as generic as possible to be open to new extensions but at the same time closed for modifications. This enables maintaining interoperability throughout different versions of the data model. We define the necessary building blocks for metadata discovery, serialization of time series data and understanding it by clients. We present several categories of time series science cases with examples of implementation. We also take into account the most pressing topics for time series providers like tracking original images for every individual point of a light curve or time-derived axes like frequency for gravitational wave analysis. The main motivation for the creation of a new model is to provide a unified time series data publishing standard - not only for light curves but also more generic time series data, e.g., radial velocity curves, power spectra, hardness ratio, provenance linkage, etc. The flexibility is the most crucial part of our model - we are not dependent on any physical domain or frame models. While images or spectra are already stable and standardized products, the time series related domains are still not completely evolved and new ones will likely emerge in near future. That is why we need to keep models like Time Series Cube DM independent of any underlying physical models. In our opinion, this is the only correct and sustainable way for future development of IVOA standards.

Abstract:Provenance is a critical ingredient for establishing trust of published scientific content. This is true whether we are considering a data set, a computational workflow, a peer-reviewed publication or a simple scientific claim with supportive evidence. Existing vocabularies such as DC Terms and the W3C PROV-O are domain-independent and general-purpose and they allow and encourage for extensions to cover more specific needs. We identify the specific need for identifying or distinguishing between the various roles assumed by agents manipulating digital artifacts, such as author, contributor and curator. We present the Provenance, Authoring and Versioning ontology (PAV): a lightweight ontology for capturing just enough descriptions essential for tracking the provenance, authoring and versioning of web resources. We argue that such descriptions are essential for digital scientific content. PAV distinguishes between contributors, authors and curators of content and creators of representations in addition to the provenance of originating resources that have been accessed, transformed and consumed. We explore five projects (and communities) that have adopted PAV illustrating their usage through concrete examples. Moreover, we present mappings that show how PAV extends the PROV-O ontology to support broader interoperability. The authors strived to keep PAV lightweight and compact by including only those terms that have demonstrated to be pragmatically useful in existing applications, and by recommending terms from existing ontologies when plausible. We analyze and compare PAV with related approaches, namely Provenance Vocabulary, DC Terms and BIBFRAME. We identify similarities and analyze their differences with PAV, outlining strengths and weaknesses of our proposed model. We specify SKOS mappings that align PAV with DC Terms.

Abstract:We present an overview of the "FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship", first published in 2016, and how they relate to astronomical data management. In particular, we discuss the connection between the FAIR principles and IVOA standards, and how data management systems with these standards implemented are close to compliance. We then look at what extra components are required to make astronomical data FAIR. Finally, we give a case study of the All-Sky Virtual Observatory (Australia's node of the VO) and their implementation of the FAIR principles.

Abstract:The U.S. Virtual Astronomical Observatory was a software infrastructure and development project designed both to begin the establishment of an operational Virtual Observatory (VO) and to provide the U.S. coordination with the international VO effort. The concept of the VO is to provide the means by which an astronomer is able to discover, access, and process data seamlessly, regardless of its physical location. This paper describes the origins of the VAO, including the predecessor efforts within the U.S. National Virtual Observatory, and summarizes its main accomplishments. These accomplishments include the development of both scripting toolkits that allow scientists to incorporate VO data directly into their reduction and analysis environments and high-level science applications for data discovery, integration, analysis, and catalog cross-comparison. Working with the international community, and based on the experience from the software development, the VAO was a major contributor to international standards within the International Virtual Observatory Alliance. The VAO also demonstrated how an operational virtual observatory could be deployed, providing a robust operational environment in which VO services worldwide were routinely checked for aliveness and compliance with international standards. Finally, the VAO engaged in community outreach, developing a comprehensive web site with on-line tutorials, announcements, links to both U.S. and internationally developed tools and services, and exhibits and hands-on training .... All digital products of the VAO Project, including software, documentation, and tutorials, are stored in a repository for community access. The enduring legacy of the VAO is an increasing expectation that new telescopes and facilities incorporate VO capabilities during the design of their data management systems.
