Abstract:To satisfy the service-oriented architecture of software for structured object-oriented formal language(SOFL),a new service-oriented software requirement refinement method was proposed.After the architecture was modeled using hierarchical Petri net,message transmission was analyzed adopting sequence diagram,and informal and semi-formal system descriptions were refined using SOFL step by step.hierarchical Petri nets based web service was discussed,and the corresponding concepts of hierarchical service net and hierarchical web service were defined.The whole analysis,design and modeling process of web service software requirement using the proposed method was described,and an illustration of travel service for explaining this process was given.Results show that the method can fit web service architecture,and help users realize web service of various granularities.The method is quite useful for exploring software requirement refinement and review in service circumstance.

Abstract:Abstract In the iterative process of the update of the information service system, the continuous improvement of the system is restricted due to problems such as non-standard, incomplete, and strong ambiguity in the description of requirements. It makes it difficult to verify the consistency and integrity of requirements. In this paper, we focus on the huge requirements of complex information service system, and propose research on requirement itemized extraction and structured description technology based on natural language processing and requirement item keyword extraction and standardized expression technology. The library management system is used as the verification object to verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper.

Abstract:[Context and motivation] Stakeholder requirements are notoriously informal, vague, ambiguous and often unattainable. The requirements engineering problem is to formalize these requirements and then transform them through a systematic process into a formal specification that can be handed over to designers for downstream development. [Question/problem] This paper proposes a framework for transforming informal requirements to formal ones, and then to a specification. [Principal ideas/results] The framework consists of an ontology of requirements, a formal requirements modeling language for representing both functional and non-functional requirements, as well as a rich set of refinement operators whereby requirements are incrementally transformed into a formal, practically satisfiable and measurable specification. [Contributions] Our proposal includes a systematic, tool-supported methodology for conducting this transformation. For evaluation, we have applied our framework to a public requirements dataset. The results of our evaluation suggest that our ontology and modeling language are adequate for capturing requirements, and our methodology is effective in handling requirements in practice.

Abstract:Refinement checking plays an important role in system verification. It establishes properties of an implementation by showing a refinement relationship between the implementation and a specification. Recently, it has been shown that anti-chain based approaches increase the efficiency of trace refinement checking significantly. In this work, we study the problem of adopting anti-chain for stable failures refinement checking, failures-divergence refinement checking and probabilistic refine checking (i.e., a probabilistic implementation against a non-probabilistic specification). We show that the first two problems can be significantly improved, because the state space of the product model may be reduced dramatically. Though applying anti-chain for probabilistic refinement checking is more complicated, we manage to show improvements in some cases. We have integrated these techniques into the PAT model checking framework. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:Architecture refinement has gradually became an important academic research field in modern software engineering since it was presented. Good architecture refinement ensures the integrity and consistency of software architecture, cuts down the cost and improves the quality of software. But the research of stepwise architecture refinement for software architecture is considered to be an underway stage due to the complexity of the conversion from the abstract to the specific architecture. This paper illustrates the features and usefulness of component-based refinement method and proposes a framework for novel architecture refinement approach. The work is based on the component of the architecture and on a series of formal languages for architecture refinement. Different levels of architecture have been formally refined from aspects of both structure and behavior, both static and dynamic. A simple example was illustrated to show the eminent feasibility and effectiveness of this approach with pi-ARL.

Abstract:Although increasingly popular, software component techniques still lack suitable formal foundations on top of which rigorous methodologies for the description and analysis of software architectures could be built. This paper aims to contribute in this direction: building on previous work by the authors on coalgebraic semantics, it discusses component refinement at three different but interrelated levels: behavioural, syntactic, i.e., relative to component interfaces, and architectural. Software architectures are defined through component aggregation. On the other hand, such aggregations, no matter how large and complex they are, can also be dealt with as components themselves, which paves the way to a discipline of hierarchical design. In this context, a major contribution of this paper is the introduction of a set of rules for architectural refinement.

Abstract:Model-driven design of software for safety-critical applications often relies on mathematically grounded techniques such as the B method. Such techniques consist in the successive applications of refinements to derive a concrete implementation from an abstract specification. Refinement theory defines verification conditions to guarantee that such operations preserve the intended behaviour of the abstract specifications. One of these conditions requires however that concrete operations have exactly the same signatures as their abstract counterpart, which is not always a practical requirement. This paper shows how changes of signatures can be achieved while still staying within the bounds of refinement theory. This makes it possible to take advantage of the mathematical guarantees and tool support provided for the current refinement-based techniques, such as the B method.

Abstract:This paper puts forward a kind of novel methodology for software system development, from the point of view of the problem existed in software development -- the gap between the requirement specification level and the program implementation level. We attempt to begin from the specification level of software development to touch the process of high-level specification construction profoundly. We propose a specification language to support multiple semantic dimensions and based on which build a unified functional model of software system in a specific domain. On the bases of these, we apply transformation and refinement methods to the model and transit it from the specification level to the implementation level. We expect such a process can change the current software producing procedure in nature. We also put this methodology into the application of the software development in real-time serving domain we focus on, which turns out to be encouraging.

Abstract:Different views of software architecture in UML diagrams are presented. It shows how UML can be used to model different aspects of software architecture. The semantics of UML diagrams are expressed in the notation of Communication Sequential Process(CSP). Different view models of software architectures are linked together based on the CSP semantics. The issue of refining such architectural specifications is also discussed, where software architectures can be refined in a manner that preserves desired system properties.

Abstract:One of the most challenging tasks in specification engineering for a multi-agent robotic system is to formally specify and architect the system, especially as a multi-agent robotic system is concurrent having concurrent processing, and often having dynamic environment. The formal requirement and architecture specifications along with step-wise refinement from abstract to concrete concepts play major role in formalizing the system. This paper proposes the formal requirement and architecture specifications aspects of an approach that supports analysis with respect to functional as well as non-functional properties by step-wise refinement from abstract to concrete specifications and formal architecture definition. These formal specifications have been exemplified by a case study. As formal specification techniques are getting more mature, our capability to build a correct complex multi-agent robotic system also grows quickly.

Abstract:The requirements elicited from stakeholders are typically informal, incomplete, ambiguous, and inconsistent. It is the task of Requirements Engineering to transform them into an eligible (formal, sufficiently complete, unambiguous, consistent, modifiable and traceable) requirements specification of functions and qualities that the system-to-be needs to operationalize. To address this requirements problem, we have proposed Desiree, a requirements calculus for systematically transforming stakeholder requirements into an eligible specification. In this paper, we define the semantics of the concepts used to model requirements, and that of the operators used to refine and operationalize requirements. We present a graphical modeling tool that supports the entire framework, including the nine concepts, eight operators and the transformation methodology. We use a Meeting Scheduler example to illustrate the kinds of reasoning tasks that we can perform based on the given semantics.

Abstract:In this paper we present a formal framework for analysis and optimisation of the requirements specifications of systems developed to apply in several countries. As different countries typically have different regulations/laws as well as different cultural restrictions, the corresponding specific requirements might differ in each particular case. Our framework provides a basis for (1) systematic and formal analysis of the diversity and interdependencies within the sets of the requirements, to avoid non-compliance, contradictions and redundancies; (2) corresponding systematic process for change management in the case of global system development.

Abstract:The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the de facto standard for requirements modeling and analysis in the software industry. However, it lacks the ability of formal analysis and verification. In this paper, we propose a synthetic approach UML-SR that integrates UML with service refinement (SR) to support the formal requirements modeling and analysis as well as formal verification. The UML-SR requirements model contains a use case diagram, the system sequence diagrams of use cases, a conceptual class diagram, and the formal contracts of system interfaces. To make this integration viable, we extend service refinement with the concepts of visibility in UML. With the visibility extension, we are able to formally specify and verify both internal and external interactions of the system. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we investigate a case study of an Online Shopping System. The results show that a consistent requirements model can be eventually derived through formal refinement and verification. The proposed approach is useful and can be further applied for the requirements modeling and formal verification in the software industry.

Abstract:We present our ongoing work on requirements specification and analysis for the geographically distributed software and systems. Developing software and systems within/for different countries or states or even within/for different organisations means that the requirements to them can differ in each particular case. These aspects naturally impact on the software architecture and on the development process as a whole. The challenge is to deal with this diversity in a systematic way, avoiding contradictions and non-compliance. In this paper, we present a formal framework for the analysis of the requirements diversity, which comes from the differences in the regulations, laws and cultural aspects for different countries or organisations. The framework also provides the corresponding architectural view and the methods for requirements structuring and optimisation.

Refinement of Models of Software Components (extended Abstract)

Abstract:Models of software components at di erent levels of abstraction, component interfaces, contracts, implementations and publications are important for component-based design. Refinement relations among models at the same level and between di erent levels are essential for model-driven development of components. Classical refinement theories mainly focus on verification and put little attention on design. Therefore, most of them are not suitable for component-based model-driven development (CB-MDD). To address this issue, in this paper, we propose two refinement relations for CB-MDD, that is a trace-based refinement and a state-based refinement. Both are discussed in the framework of rCOS, which is a formal model of component and object systems. These refinement relations provide di erent granularity of abstraction and can capture the intuition that a refined component provides “more” and “better” services to the environment. We also show how to extend these refinement relations to allow us to compare contracts, components and publications with di erent interfaces by exploiting the primitive operator internalizing over contracts, components and publications.

Abstract:Popular notations for functional requirements specifications frequently ignore developers' needs, target specific development models, or require translation of requirements into tests for verification; the results can give out-of-sync or downright incompatible artifacts. Seamless Requirements, a new approach to specifying functional requirements, contributes to developers' understanding of requirements and to software quality regardless of the process, while the process itself becomes lighter due to the absence of tests in the presence of formal verification. A development case illustrates these benefits, and a discussion compares seamless requirements to other approaches.

Abstract:Abstract Verification is a process for developing evidence to show that the design satisfies the requirements. The verification process starts early in a development program and the verification requirements are defined in the verification text of a requirements document, as defined in MIL‐STD‐961, Defense and Program‐Unique Specifications Format and Content. Papers have been written to describe how to develop quality design requirements to ensure the requirements are unambiguous and verifiable, as required by ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148:2011 and related commercial and military standards, but few papers have been written to describe how to develop quality verification requirements for each design requirement. This paper describes a formal structured verification framework for developing consistent, high‐quality verification requirements, which includes using specific sentence structures to write the verification requirements with mandatory and optional elements.

Abstract:When engineering complex and distributed software and hardware systems (increasingly used in many sectors, such as manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, communication, energy, and health-care), quality has become a big issue, since failures can have economics consequences and can also endanger human life. Model-based specifications of a component-based system permit to explicitly model the structure and behaviour of components and their integration. In particular Software Architectures (SA) has been advocated as an effective means to produce quality systems. In this chapter by combining different technologies and tools for analysis and development, we propose an architecture-centric model-driven approach to validate required properties and to generate the system code. Functional requirements are elicited and used for identifying expected properties the architecture shall express. The architectural compliance to the properties is formally demonstrated, and the produced architectural model is used to automatically generate the Java code. Suitable transformations assure that the code is conforming to both structural and behavioural SA constraints. This chapter describes the process and discusses how some existing tools and languages can be exploited to support the approach.
