Abstract:This article analyzes the process of architecture development from pre-industrial society to consumer society from the point of view of Roland Barthes’ mythology and Jean Baudrillard’theory of consumer society,generalizes contemporary architecture consumption into a mythological construction with four-level-hierarchy,proposes that in consumer society,popular culture endues buildings with diverse cultural meanings and attaches sign value,such as power,status,fame etc.to these meanings.The final target for architecture consumption is to realize sign value and to reflect the social relationship is different consumption activities.

Abstract:With the growing development of the market economy and the widespread popularization of feminist cultural trends, the consumption pattern of “her economy” has set off a huge social upsurge in China. The media platform and consumption culture have gradually evolved into an important way for mainstream society to differentiate, symbolize and regulate gender roles. Based on the images displayed by female consumers on the domestic mass media platform, this paper discusses the changes in modern women's gender roles and the new dilemma of gender consciousness from the perspective of consumerism. First of all, this paper expounds the relationship between consumerism and gender culture from two aspects based on a large amount of literature: the symbol construction of “others” and the modernity gaze that is not divorced from male power, and uses the text analysis method to interpret the cultural characteristics of consumerism implied in female media images, reveals the deconstruction of the former gender gaze by the modern female image and the identity construction that has not completed the new modernity enlightenment; Secondly, taking the threshold space as the core concept, it shows how women struggle between the old and new gender norms from the perspectives of the possibility and constraint of female temperament and the autonomy and discipline of female body; Finally, it comes to the conclusion that in order to create a female media image that is really conducive to the construction of social gender, it is necessary to carry out reflective construction in women's own way based on women's own experience and understanding outside the male gaze perspective.
The 'Perfect' Body : A Study of the Body in Today's Consumer Society

Abstract:This thesis explores the ways in which the body is positioned within consumer society. The development of body ideals in Western societies is examined in order to point out consumers’ occupation with appearances and their bodies as signifiers of success. The three case studies (A&F, Calvin Klein Underwear and fitness magazines) will enable a close analysis of contemporary society and its engagement with the body. I argue that today the body acts as a signifier for people’s narcissistic obsession with the surface, and that the body itself has come to exhibit characteristics of a commodity in consumer society.

Abstract:Wang Ning holds that as a product of postmodern consumer society, consumer culture distinguishes itself apparently with the elitist modern culture. While some of its elegant products may well become elite cultural products, more will be out of fashion along with the elapse of time. Wang Yichuan insists that consumer culture in contemporary China does not simply follow what Featherstone called the thoroughfare of "commodity world and its structuralization," instead, due to the intricate functioning of its multiple elements, it represents a displaced and time twisted dilemma: a consumer spoiled hot body and a critically reflective mind. To Bao Yarning, however, the logic of consumerism not only becomes the logic of our social space operation, but also the cultural logic dominating the daily life. Finally, Lu Yang tries to illustrate that while the cultural Americanization grows to be the core issue each nation faces, it will be a too naive resolution to dismiss it as a damned consumerism purely stimulated by multiple images, or sound and furry exactly.

Abstract:In the light of Baudrillard’s theory on consumption (symbol, simulation and simulacra, hyper-reality), this thesis discusses a specific point in the process of goods circulation: creating a consumption market by constructing a hyper-reality in advertisement. On the one side, consumption and consumerism are introduced. In contemporary society consumption has already become a lifestyle. Consumerism has been internalized as a kind of social logic. On the other side, modern consumption takes symbols as the presentation of consuming. Symbol value substitutes subject value. Symbol appears; subject disappears. The reality is deconstructed. Hyper-reality is constructed. Finally, hyper-realistic advertisement is the driving force of the consumer society. Advertisement constructs a kind of hyper-realistic consumption cultural, which finally is rationalized as a general collective consciousness.

Abstract:There have long been debates on the artistic concept of advertisements.Two domains exist in the debates: that of concrete evidence and that of criticism.The organization and cognition of the lines of thought in the debates are based on the latter.From the perspective of diachronic examinations,the relations between advertisements and art are similar and different,too.In terms of classic art,advertisements and art are of many similarities.Both are independent artistic forms;both belong to aesthetic culture with technique as their kernel content;both are faced with the similar utilitarianism;both are expressed in a peaceful and non-intense style and both are pertain to a positive culture.But as far as the modernistic art is concerned,advertisements and art have totally different nature and functions.When it comes to post-modernistic art,the two have a relationship of implicit overlapping.The post-modernistic artists' practice has broken the demarcation line between art and life and therefore,the advertisements which are seen as a form of popular culture,have already become art itself.
Nennu and Shunu: gender, body politics, and the beauty economy in China

Abstract:This essay analyzes recent discourse on two emerging representations of women in China, "tender" women (nennu) and "ripe" women (shunu), in order to examine the relationships among gender, body politics, and consumerism. The discourse of nennu and shunu suggests that older, ripe women become younger and more tender by consuming fashions, cosmetic surgery technologies, and beauty and health care products and services because tender women represent the ideal active consumership that celebrates beauty, sexuality, and individuality. This discourse serves to enhance consumers' desire for beauty and health and to ensure the continued growth of China's beauty economy and consumer capitalism. Highlighting the role of the female body, feminine beauty, and feminine youth in developing consumerism, this discourse downplays the contributions of millions of beauty and health care providers (predominantly laid-off female workers and rural migrant women) and new forms of gender exploitation. Such an overemphasis on gender masks intensified class division. This essay suggests that women and their bodies become new terrains from which post-Mao China can draw its power and enact consumerism. Gender constitutes both an economic multiplier to boost China's consumer capitalism and a biopolitical strategy to regulate and remold women and their bodies into subjects that are identified with the state's political and economic objectives. Since consumerism has been incorporated into China's nation-building project, gender thus becomes a vital resource for both consumer capitalist development and nation building. This essay shows that both gender and the body are useful analytic categories for the study of postsocialism.

Abstract:The discourses of body,race and hygiene and their pursuits of hygienic modernity in Late Qing influenced the consumer culture of that time.The merchants moved the customers into the purchase urge by breathing the concepts of hygiene,race and nation into their promotions.As a matter of fact,the ad- vertising was no more than a stunt,and the goods would get people nowhere near the prosperity of either the race or the nation.On the other hand,such a rhetorical tactic or narrative,as a result of politicalizing the routine ways of expression and practice,revealed the rise of a new type of political culture,in which the Late Qing intellectuals reposed their imagination and construction of both a strong race and a powerful nation-state.This new type of political culture profoundly touched the modern Chinese society.

Abstract:The present inquiry examines the psychosocial meanings and processes that shape consumers' sense of body image and the consumption behaviors motivated by those perceptions. Poststructuralist interpretive procedures were used to analyze interviews with 30 male and female consumers, aged 6–54. This discourse analysis led to the development of three process-orientated themes: (1) the ideology of self-control, (2) the social processes of normalization and problematization, and (3) the operation of the disciplinary gaze. The systematic manifestations of these themes are illustrated across a range of consumer experiences and body-focused perceptions. Implications of these themes for the theoretical conceptualizations of body image and the nature of self-concept in contemporary consumer culture are discussed.

Abstract:Studies indicate mental health improvement can occur via religious communities offering social support and other resources. Many people from many cultures regard medicine as a supernatural or magical treatment that can somehow lead to a better state of living. In medical advertising, female role portrayal involves the blending of beauty, ritual and attractiveness in combination with the best product image. A Chinese saying suggests that, "A girl will doll herself up for him who loves her." Female role attraction is a very important ethical subject in gender issues. Moving forward in time, female role visualization and consumption in medical advertising reveal depictions that encouraged women to do some self-searching and find, or develop, inner strength. This study is designed to examine female role portrayals in a restricted patriarchal society. The results indicate that the ideology of motherhood is an accepted social orientation that the public readily identifies with. Results further indicate that beautification through medical products incorporates an emotional element of religious healing and that the objectification of beauty in the media reveals a possible neglect of women's internal beauty.

Abstract:This paper is written on the occasion when the “collective speech”and “collective silence” of “avant-garde criticism” come into being out of the commentaries on Jia Pingwa’s new work Shaanxi Opera. It discusses the reason why “avant-garde criticism” has changed from the new and sharp criticism in the late 1980’s into the present cultural sketches at the transitional period to the “age of consumption.” The author believes that “avant-garde criticism” has abandoned the criticalness of literary criticism in its identification with the reality of consumer society. It should set right its values, perspectives and distance of criticism in order to reconstruct its critical position and restore its criticalness.
