Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$ and $S \rightarrow X$ a $2:1$ branched covering defined by a generic quadratic differential on $X$. In the following notes, we explore how taking direct images of line bundles defined by certain distinguished special divisors on $S$ gives rank-2 bundles having nilpotent Higgs fields on $X$. The key ingredient is the notion of Baker-Akhiezer divisors associated to Higgs bundles and choices of subbundles of the underlying rank-2 bundles.

Abstract:We construct a generalized Witten genus for spin$^c$ manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spin$^c$ manifolds called string$^c$ manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for $8k+2$ dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalized Witten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on string$^c$ and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a uniform bundle on an arbitrary generalised Grassmannian $X$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$. We show that if the rank of $E$ is at most $e.d.(\mathrm{VMRT})$, then $E$ necessarily splits. For some generalised Grassmannians, we prove that the upper bounds $e.d.(\mathrm{VMRT})$ are optimal and classify all unsplit uniform bundles of minimal ranks. Under some special assumptions, we show that morphisms to some generalised flag varieties must be constant, which partially answered a conjecture of Kumar.

Abstract:The generic étaleness is an important property on the moduli space of dormant $\mathfrak{g}$-opers (for a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$) in the context of enumerative geometry. In the previous study, this property has been verified under the assumption that $\mathfrak{g}$ is either $\mathfrak{sl}_\ell$, $\mathfrak{so}_{2\ell -1}$, or $\mathfrak{sp}_{2\ell}$ for any sufficiently small positive integer $\ell$. The purpose of the present paper is to prove the generic étaleness for one of the remaining cases, i.e., $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{so}_{2\ell}$. As an application of this result, we obtain a factorization formula for computing the generic degree induced from pull-back along various clutching morphisms between moduli spaces of pointed stable curves.

Abstract:In a paper from twenty years ago, Brown and Myers proved the clean and uniform result that if m > 1 is an integer, then every curve of the form y 2 = x 3 − x + m 2 has Mordell-Weil rank at least 2. In this article, we further our investigation into the more general family of curves, in which the polynomial x 3 − x is replaced by an arbitrary cubic which is squarefree and has three integral roots. In particular, a new strategy will unveil a subfamily of curves with surprisingly large average rank, and one startling example.

Abstract:We investigate the Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) theory of local curves, namely, the total spaces of rank two vector bundles with canonical determinant on smooth projective curves. Under a certain genericity condition on the rank two bundles, we propose a general mechanism to compute the degree two GV invariants of local curves. In particular, we determine all the degree two GV invariants when the base curve has genus two. Combined with previous work by Bryan and Pandharipande, we obtain the GV/GW correspondence in this case. When the base curve has genus greater than two, we calculate GV invariants for some extremal genera, providing evidence for the GV/GW conjecture for curves of higher genus.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

As an application, we explicitly compute the generic degree of three period maps underlying families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from toric hypersurfaces. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:We present bounds for the geometric degree of the tangent bundle and the tangential variety of a smooth affine algebraic variety $V$ in terms of the geometric degree of $V$. We first analyze the case of curves, showing an explicit relation between these degrees. In addition, for parametric curves, we obtain upper bounds that are linear in the degree of the given curve. In the case of varieties of arbitrary dimension, we prove general upper bounds for the degrees of the tangent bundle and the tangential variety of $V$ that are exponential in the dimension or co-dimension of $V$, and a quadratic upper bound that holds for varieties defined by generic polynomials. Finally, we characterize the smooth irreducible varieties with a tangent bundle of minimal degree.
