Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$ and $S \rightarrow X$ a $2:1$ branched covering defined by a generic quadratic differential on $X$. In the following notes, we explore how taking direct images of line bundles defined by certain distinguished special divisors on $S$ gives rank-2 bundles having nilpotent Higgs fields on $X$. The key ingredient is the notion of Baker-Akhiezer divisors associated to Higgs bundles and choices of subbundles of the underlying rank-2 bundles.

Abstract:The authors discuss the existence and classification of stable vector bundles of rank 3, with 3 or 4 linearly independent holomorphic sections. The sets of all such bundles are denoted by ω 3,d 2 and ω 3,d 2 , respectively. Our argument leads to sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of both kinds of bundles. The conclusion is very interesting because of its contradiction to the conjectured dimension formula of stable bundles. Finally, we give a preliminary classification of ω 3,4 2 and a complete discussion on the structure of $\omega _{3,\tfrac{2}{3}g + 2}^3 $.

Abstract:A genus-g du Val curve is a degree-3g plane curve having 8 points of multiplicity g, one point of multiplicity g-1, and no other singularity. We prove that the corank of the Gauss-Wahl map of a general du Val curve of odd genus (>11) is equal to one. This, together with the results of [1], shows that the characterisation of Brill-Noether-Petri curves with non-surjective Gauss-Wahl map as hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces and limits thereof, obtained in [3], is optimal.

Abstract:We investigate the existence of globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 with $c_1\leq 3$ on a smooth quadric threefold and determine their Chern classes. As an automatic consequence, every rank 2 globally generated vector bundle on $Q$ with $c_1=3$ is an odd instanton up to twist.

It is proved that the isomorphism class of the stack uniquely determines the isomorphism class of the curve $X$ and the rank of the vector bundles. The case of trivial determinant, rank $2$ and genus $2$ is specially interesting: the curve can be recovered from the moduli stack, but not from the moduli space (since this moduli space is $\mathbb{P}^3$ thus independently of the curve). On some topological equivalences for moduli spaces of $G$-bundles

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a nontrivial connected reductive affine algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. Examining the moduli spaces of regularly stable $G$-Higgs bundles and holomorphic $G$-connections with a fixed topological type $d\in \pi_1(G)$ over $X$, we establish that the $k$-th homotopy groups of these two moduli spaces are isomorphic for $k \leq 2g-4$. We also prove that the mixed Hodge structures on the rational cohomology groups of these two moduli spaces are pure and isomorphic. Lastly, we explicitly describe the homotopy groups of the moduli space of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-connections over $X$.

A classification of complex rank 3 vector bundles on complex projective 5-space

Abstract:Given integers $a_1,a_2,a_3$, there is a complex rank $3$ topological bundle on $\mathbb CP^5$ with $i$-th Chern class equal to $a_i$ if and only if $a_1,a_2,a_3$ satisfy the Schwarzenberger condition. Provided that the Schwarzenberger condition is satisfied, we prove that the number of isomorphism classes of rank $3$ bundles $V$ on $\mathbb C P^5$ with $c_i(V)=a_i$ is equal to $3$ if $a_1$ and $a_2$ are both divisible by $3$ and equal to $1$ otherwise. This shows that Chern classes are incomplete invariants of topological rank $3$ bundles on $\mathbb CP^5$. To address this problem, we produce a universal class in the $tmf$-cohomology of a Thom spectrum related to $BU(3)$, where $tmf$ denotes topological modular forms localized at $3$. From this class and orientation data, we construct a $\mathbb Z/3$-valued invariant of the bundles of interest and prove that our invariant separates distinct bundles with the same Chern classes.

Abstract:Let $g$ be a non-negative integer, $\Sigma _g$ a closed orientable surface of genus $g$, and $\mathcal{M}_g$ its mapping class group. We classify all the group homomorphisms $\pi _1(\Sigma _g)\to G$ up to the action of $\mathcal{M}_g$ on $\pi _1(\Sigma _g)$ in the following cases; (1) $G=PSL(2;\mathbb{Z})$, (2) $G=SL(2;\mathbb{Z})$. As an application of the case (2), we completely classify orientable $T^2$-bundles over closed orientable surfaces up to bundle isomorphisms. In particular, we show that any orientable $T^2$-bundle over $\Sigma _g$ with $g\geq 1$ is isomorphic to the fiber connected sum of $g$ pieces of $T^2$-bundles over $T^2$. Moreover, the classification result in the case (1) can be generalized into the case where $G$ is the free product of finite number of finite cyclic groups. We also apply it to an extension problem of maps from a closed surface to the connected sum of lens spaces.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a curve and $V \to C$ an orthogonal vector bundle of rank $r$. For $r \le 6$, the structure of $V$ can be described using tensor, symmetric and exterior products of bundles of lower rank, essentially due to the existence of exceptional isomorphisms between $\mathrm{Spin} (r , \mathbb{C})$ and other groups for these $r$. We analyze these structures in detail, and in particular use them to describe moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles. Furthermore, the locus of isotropic vectors in $V$ defines a quadric subfibration $Q_V \subset \mathbb{P} V$. Using familiar results on quadrics of low dimension, we exhibit isomorphisms between isotropic Quot schemes of $V$ and certain ordinary Quot schemes of line subbundles. In particular, for $r \le 6$ this gives a method for enumerating the isotropic subbundles of maximal degree of a general $V$, when there are finitely many.

Degree two Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of local curves

Abstract:We investigate the Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) theory of local curves, namely, the total spaces of rank two vector bundles with canonical determinant on smooth projective curves. Under a certain genericity condition on the rank two bundles, we propose a general mechanism to compute the degree two GV invariants of local curves. In particular, we determine all the degree two GV invariants when the base curve has genus two. Combined with previous work by Bryan and Pandharipande, we obtain the GV/GW correspondence in this case. When the base curve has genus greater than two, we calculate GV invariants for some extremal genera, providing evidence for the GV/GW conjecture for curves of higher genus.

Tschirnhausen bundles of covers of the projective line

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).

Abstract:We completely classify all quotient bundles of a given vector bundle on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. As consequences, we have two additional classification results: a complete classification of all vector bundles that are generated by a fixed number of global sections and a nearly complete classification of subbundles of a given vector bundle. For the proof, we combine the dimension counting argument for moduli of bundle maps developed in [BFH+17] with a series of reduction arguments based on some reinterpretation of the classifying conditions.

Abstract:This paper is the second in a series of three devoted to the smooth classification of simply connected elliptic surfaces. In this paper, we study the case where one of the multiple fibers has even multiplicity, and describe the moduli space of stable rank two vector bundles with the appropriate first Chern class needed to calculate Donaldson polynomials. The analysis is in many ways parallel to the analysis in the case of vector bundles of trivial determinant, but the asymmetry between the multiplicities also appears in the moduli space. In this way, the first coefficient of an appropriate Donaldson polynomial determines one of the multiplicities.
