Abstract:The Brill-Noether theory of curves plays a fundamental role in the theory of curves and their moduli and has been intensively studied since the 19th century. In contrast, Brill-Noether theory for higher dimensional varieties is less understood. It is hard to determine when Brill-Noether loci are nonempty and these loci can be reducible and of larger than the expected dimension. Let $E$ be a semistable sheaf on the projective plane. In this paper, we give an upper bound for $h^0(E)$ in terms of the rank $r$ and the slope $\mu$ of $E$. We show that the bound is achieved precisely when $E$ is a twist of a Steiner bundle. We classify the sheaves $E$ such that $h^0(E)$ is sufficiently close to the upper bound. We determine the nonemptiness, irreducibility and dimension of the Brill-Noether loci in the moduli spaces of sheaves with $h^0(E)$ in this range. When they are nonempty, these Brill-Noether loci are irreducible though almost always of larger than the expected dimension.

Abstract:We study here the Brill-Noether theory for rank two vector bundles. First we construct a parameter space Hd for all base point free rank two vector bundles of degree d which generated by its sections. Then for each E ∈ Hd, we define a 2g × d matrix WE for which we call it the Brill-Noether matrix of E, it shares the same properties as the Brill-Noether matrix WD for effective divisor D. By using WE, the Brill-Noether variety Cr 2,d = {E ∈ Hd | dimH 0(C, E) ≥ r+1} could be given by Cr 2,d = {E ∈ Hd | rank(WE) ≤ d − r + 1}, so C r 2,d is a determinant variety, we get its expected dimension is 4(g −1)+1 −(r +1)(2(g −1) − d+ r +1)+2r +1. On the other hand, by using WE, we define the Petri map to be P : H0(C, K(−E)) ⊗ Im{H0(C, E) 7→ H0(C,(D))} 7→ H0(C, K(D)(−E)), we show that Cr 2,d has the expected dimension if and only if the Petri map is injective.

Abstract:Let X be an arbitrary smooth irreducible complex projective curve, E --> X a rank two vector bundle generated by its sections. The author first represents E as a triple {D-1, D-2, f}, where D-1, D-2 are two effective divisors with d = deg(D-1) + deg(D-2), and f is an element of H-0(X, [D-1] \D-2) is a collection of polynomials. E is the extension of [D-2] by [D-1] which is determined by f. By using f and the Brill-Noether matrix of D, + D-2, the author constructs a 2g x d matrix WE whose zero space gives Im{H-0(X, [D-1]) --> H-0(X, [D-1] \D-1)} circle plus Im{H-0(X, E) --> H-0(X, [D-2]) --> H-0(X, [D-2] \D-2)}. From this and H-0(X, E) = H-0(X, [D-1]) circle plus Im{H-0(X, E) --> H-0(X, [D-2])}, it is got in particular that dimH(0)(X, E) = deg(E) - rank(W-E) + 2.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:Let X be a ruled surface over a nonsingular curve C of genus $g\geq0$. Let $M_H:=M_{X,H}(2;c_1,c_2)$ be the moduli space of H-stable rank 2 vector bundles E on X with fixed Chern classes $c_i:=c_i(E)$ for $i=1,2$. The main goal of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the geometry of the moduli space $M_H$ in terms of its Brill-Noether locus $W_H^k(2;c_1,c_2)$, whose points correspond to stable vector bundles in $M_H$ having at least k independent sections. We deal with the non-emptiness of this Brill-Noether locus, getting in most of the cases sharp bounds for the values of k such that $W_H^k(2;c_1,c_2)$ is non-empty.

Towards Brill-Noether Theory for Spectral Curves

Abstract:We investigate Brill-Noether loci of two kinds of spectral curves: double covers whose branch locus is a canonical divisor and spectral covers of the projective line. Our techniques are based on the Hitchin correspondence and Higgs bundles. For the first kind our results determine the gonality sequence, when the rank of the linear system is much smaller than the genus. For this the curve and the branch divisor are assumed to be general. In the second case we compute dimensions of the finer splitting loci if these spaces are non-empty. We compare this result with the existing literature about general curves with a fixed gonality.

Abstract:Motivated by Witten’s work, we propose a K -theoretic Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence which relates the GL Verlinde numbers to the K -theoretic quasimap invariants of the Grassmannian. We recover these two types of invariants by imposing different stability conditions on the gauged linear sigma model associated with the Grassmannian. We construct two families of stability conditions connecting the two theories and prove two wall-crossing results. We confirm the Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence in the rank two case.

Abstract:A genus-g du Val curve is a degree-3g plane curve having 8 points of multiplicity g, one point of multiplicity g-1, and no other singularity. We prove that the corank of the Gauss-Wahl map of a general du Val curve of odd genus (>11) is equal to one. This, together with the results of [1], shows that the characterisation of Brill-Noether-Petri curves with non-surjective Gauss-Wahl map as hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces and limits thereof, obtained in [3], is optimal.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:Recently the Brill–Noether theory of curves C of both fixed genus and gonality was established. In particular, in this theory (now called the Hurwitz–Brill–Noether theory), all irreducible components of the variety of complete linear series of a fixed degree and dimension on C are obtained from the closures of certain so-called "Brill–Noether splitting loci" (loci which have a rather succinct description). In this paper, a method previously invented for the construction of some of these irreducible components is applied to get simply designed varieties inside the difference between these splitting loci and their closures, i.e., inside the boundary of the splitting loci.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$ and $S \rightarrow X$ a $2:1$ branched covering defined by a generic quadratic differential on $X$. In the following notes, we explore how taking direct images of line bundles defined by certain distinguished special divisors on $S$ gives rank-2 bundles having nilpotent Higgs fields on $X$. The key ingredient is the notion of Baker-Akhiezer divisors associated to Higgs bundles and choices of subbundles of the underlying rank-2 bundles.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the Brill--Noether theory of a general smooth plane curve and a general curve $C$ on a Hirzebruch surface of fixed class. It is natural to study the line bundles on such curves according to the splitting type of their pushforward along projection maps $C \to \mathbb{P}^1$. Inspired by Wood's parameterization of ideal classes in rings associated to binary forms, we further refine the stratification of line bundles $L$ on $C$ by fixing the splitting types of both $L$ and $L(\Delta)$, where $\Delta \subset C$ is the intersection of $C$ with the directrix of the Hirzebruch surface. Our main theorem determines the dimensions of these locally closed strata and, if the characteristic of the ground field is zero, proves that they are smooth.

There are a number of different types, that can be treated by determinantal methods, with symmetry or skewsymmetry arising from Serre duality. They have many beautiful applications to curves, K3 surfaces and Fano 3-folds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Brill-Noether loci for higher dimensional varieties. Let $M$ be a moduli space of coherent sheaves on $X$. The Brill-Noether loci of $M$ are the closed subsets $\{\mathcal{F} \in M : h^0(X,\mathcal{F}) \geq k+1\}$. When $X$ is a smooth curve and $M = \textbf{Pic}_X^d$, the space of degree $d$ line bundles on $X$, the Brill-Noether loci have a natural determinantal scheme structure coming from a map of vector bundles on $\textbf{Pic}_X^d$, which is the main tool in studying their geometry. In [CMR10], the authors generalize this to the case where $X$ is any variety and $M$ is the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ with fixed invariants but require that $H^i(X,E) = 0$ for all $E \in M$ and $i \geq 2$. We generalize these results by showing how to give a natural determinantal scheme structure to the Brill-Noether loci for any $X$ and any $M$. In doing so we develop the theory of Fitting ideals for a complex which can be used to define natural scheme structures in other cases as well, such as the locus of points where the projective dimension of a coherent sheaf jumps up. As an application of our results, we construct moduli spaces for very ample line bundles on a variety.

On Double Vector Bundles

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a category of short exact sequences of vector bundles and prove that it is equivalent to the category of double vector bundles. Moreover, operations on double vector bundles can be transferred to operations on the corresponding short exact sequences. In particular, we study the duality theory of double vector bundles in term of the corresponding short exact sequences. Examples including the jet bundle and the Atiyah algebroid are discussed.

Abstract:The authors discuss the existence and classification of stable vector bundles of rank 3, with 3 or 4 linearly independent holomorphic sections. The sets of all such bundles are denoted by ω 3,d 2 and ω 3,d 2 , respectively. Our argument leads to sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of both kinds of bundles. The conclusion is very interesting because of its contradiction to the conjectured dimension formula of stable bundles. Finally, we give a preliminary classification of ω 3,4 2 and a complete discussion on the structure of $\omega _{3,\tfrac{2}{3}g + 2}^3 $.
Weak Brill-Noether on Abelian Surfaces

Abstract:We study the cohomology of a general stable sheaf on an abelian surface. We say that a moduli space satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf has at most one non-zero cohomology group. Let $(X,H)$ be a polarized abelian surface and let $\mathbf{v}=(r,\xi,a)$ be a Mukai vector on $X$ with $\mathbf{v}^2\ge 0$,$r>0$, and $\xi\cdot H>0$. We show that if $\rho(X)=1$ or $\rho(X)=2$ and $X$ contains an elliptic curve, then all the moduli spaces $M_{X,H}(\mathbf{v})$ satisfy weak Brill-Noether. Conversely, if $\rho(X)>2$ or $\rho(X)=2$ and $X$ does not contain an elliptic curve, we show that there are infinitely many moduli spaces $M_{X,H}(\mathbf{v})$ that fail weak Brill-Noether. As a consequence, we classify Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on abelian surfaces.
