Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 3$ and $S \rightarrow X$ a $2:1$ branched covering defined by a generic quadratic differential on $X$. In the following notes, we explore how taking direct images of line bundles defined by certain distinguished special divisors on $S$ gives rank-2 bundles having nilpotent Higgs fields on $X$. The key ingredient is the notion of Baker-Akhiezer divisors associated to Higgs bundles and choices of subbundles of the underlying rank-2 bundles.

Abstract:We study here the Brill-Noether theory for rank two vector bundles. First we construct a parameter space Hd for all base point free rank two vector bundles of degree d which generated by its sections. Then for each E ∈ Hd, we define a 2g × d matrix WE for which we call it the Brill-Noether matrix of E, it shares the same properties as the Brill-Noether matrix WD for effective divisor D. By using WE, the Brill-Noether variety Cr 2,d = {E ∈ Hd | dimH 0(C, E) ≥ r+1} could be given by Cr 2,d = {E ∈ Hd | rank(WE) ≤ d − r + 1}, so C r 2,d is a determinant variety, we get its expected dimension is 4(g −1)+1 −(r +1)(2(g −1) − d+ r +1)+2r +1. On the other hand, by using WE, we define the Petri map to be P : H0(C, K(−E)) ⊗ Im{H0(C, E) 7→ H0(C,(D))} 7→ H0(C, K(D)(−E)), we show that Cr 2,d has the expected dimension if and only if the Petri map is injective.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:Let N be the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 with fixed odd determinant. With Sebastian Torres, we previously found a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of N into bounded derived categories of symmetric powers of the curve and, possibly, a phantom block. In this work, we employ the theory of weaving patterns to eliminate the possibility of a phantom, completing the proof of the decomposition conjectured by Narasimhan and, independently, by Belmans, Galkin, and Mukhopadhyay.

Abstract:We prove that on a general hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^N$ of degree $d$ and dimension at least $2$, if an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle $E$ and its dual have small regularity, then any non-trivial Hodge class in $H^{n}(X, E\otimes\Omega^n_X)$, $n = \lfloor\frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$, produces a trivial direct summand of $E$. As a consequence, we prove that there is no universal Ulrich bundle on the family of smooth hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 3$ and dimension at least $4$. This last statement may be viewed as a Franchetta-type conjecture for Ulrich bundles on smooth hypersurfaces.

Abstract:Given any irreducible smooth complex projective curve $X$, of genus at least $2$, consider the moduli stack of vector bundles on $X$ of fixed rank and determinant. It is proved that the isomorphism class of the stack uniquely determines the isomorphism class of the curve $X$ and the rank of the vector bundles. The case of trivial determinant, rank $2$ and genus $2$ is specially interesting: the curve can be recovered from the moduli stack, but not from the moduli space (since this moduli space is $\mathbb{P}^3$ thus independently of the curve). We also prove a Torelli theorem for moduli stacks of principal $G$-bundles on a curve of genus at least $3$, where $G$ is any non-abelian reductive group.

Abstract:We calculate the determinant of the bilinear form in middle degree of the generic artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an odd-dimensional simplicial sphere. This proves the odd multiplicity conjecture of Papadakis and Petrotou and implies that this determinant is a complete invariant of the simplicial sphere. We extend this result to odd-dimensional connected oriented simplicial homology manifolds. In characteristic 2, we prove a generalization to the Hodge-Riemann forms of any connected simplicial homology manifold. To prove the latter theorem we establish the strong Lefschetz property for certain quotients of the Stanley-Reisner rings of connected simplicial pseudomanifolds.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a number field and $\mathcal{E}$ an elliptic curve defined over the function field $k(T)$ given by an equation of the form $y^2 = a_3x^3 + a_2x^2 + a_1x + a_0$, where $a_i \in k[T]$ and $deg(a_i) \leq 2$. We explore the conic bundle structure over the $x$-line to obtain lower and upper bounds for the Mordell--Weil rank of $\mathcal{E}(k(T))$.

Abstract:We compute some Hodge and Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable rank $r$ degree $d$ vector bundles on a smooth projective curve. We do not assume $r$ and $d$ are coprime. In the process we equip the cohomology of an arbitrary algebraic stack with a functorial mixed Hodge structure. This Hodge structure is computed in the case of the moduli stack of rank $r$, degree $d$ vector bundles on a curve. Our methods also yield a formula for the Poincare polynomial of the moduli stack that is valid over any ground field.

Abstract:For a Riemann surface $X$ and the moduli of regularly stable $G$-bundles $M$, there is a naturally occuring "$adjoint$" vector bundle over $X \times M$. One can take the determinant of this vector bundle with respect to the projection map onto $M$. Our aim here is to study the curvature of the determinant bundle as the conformal structure on $X$ varies over the Teichmüller space.

Abstract:A genus-g du Val curve is a degree-3g plane curve having 8 points of multiplicity g, one point of multiplicity g-1, and no other singularity. We prove that the corank of the Gauss-Wahl map of a general du Val curve of odd genus (>11) is equal to one. This, together with the results of [1], shows that the characterisation of Brill-Noether-Petri curves with non-surjective Gauss-Wahl map as hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces and limits thereof, obtained in [3], is optimal.

Abstract:We exhibit closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $10$ and $17$ such that the multiplicity of the first nonzero eigenvalue of their Laplacian is larger than the maximum conjectured by Yves Colin de Verdière in 1986. In order to determine these multiplicities, we apply the twisted Selberg trace formula to the representations induced by the isometry groups of these surfaces on corresponding triangle groups.
