Abstract:The dwell time at a bus stop contributes much of the running time and headway variations and affects bus performance and level of service. Traditionally, dwell time is considered a function of the number of alighting and boarding passengers plus door opening and closing times. However, this conclusion could be inaccurate for the congested bus because the standees in the bus may affect the alighting and boarding time. Through data collected from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, this paper analyzes the in-bus congestion rate's impact on the boarding and alighting times per passenger. Then, four models (vulnerable group's boarding time per passenger and alighting time per passenger, non-vulnerable group's boarding time per passenger and alighting time per passenger) are proposed. The results indicate that the congestion rate affects the boarding and alighting times per passenger, and the influence on the boarding time per passenger is larger than on the alighting time per passenger. These results are useful for estimating dwell time. The results indicate that the boarding and alighting times per passenger are affected by the congestion rate when it is large enough and the influence cannot be ignored.
