Abstract:Lanthanide rare-earth metals are ubiquitous in modern technologies 1,2,3,4,5 , but we know little about chemistry of the 61st element, promethium (Pm) 6 , a lanthanide that is highly radioactive and inaccessible. Despite its importance 7,8 , Pm has been conspicuously absent from the experimental studies of lanthanides, impeding our full comprehension of the so-called lanthanide contraction phenomenon: a fundamental aspect of the periodic table that is quoted in general chemistry textbooks. Here we demonstrate a stable chelation of the 147 Pm radionuclide (half-life of 2.62 years) in aqueous solution by the newly synthesized organic diglycolamide ligand. The resulting homoleptic Pm III complex is studied using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations to establish the coordination structure and a bond distance of promethium. These fundamental insights allow a complete structural investigation of a full set of isostructural lanthanide complexes, ultimately capturing the lanthanide contraction in solution solely on the basis of experimental observations. Our results show accelerated shortening of bonds at the beginning of the lanthanide series, which can be correlated to the separation trends shown by diglycolamides 9,10,11 . The characterization of the radioactive Pm III complex in an aqueous environment deepens our understanding of intra-lanthanide behaviour 12,13,14,15 and the chemistry and separation of the f -block elements 16 .

Abstract:In the relentless pursuit of expanding the periodic table, the discovery of element 119 remains elusive, despite two decades of dedicated research efforts. The traditional fusion-evaporation approach, although fruitful in the past, now appears to be approaching its operational limits. This scenario sets the stage for considering innovative methodologies essential for further advancements in the field of superheavy elements. Here, we introduce a pioneering strategy aimed at synthesizing element 119 by adapting and extending the nuclear reaction processes previously successful in producing element $^{294}$Og. This involved the fusion of $^{48}$Ca and $^{249}$Cf. Building on this, our novel approach incorporates an additional reactive target -- specifically, hydrogen -- positioned strategically behind the $^{249}$Cf. This configuration is designed to facilitate an immediate secondary reaction of the nascent $^{294}$Og with hydrogen, potentially forging new pathways to element 119. Preliminary insights also suggest that employing isotopes like deuterium or helium-3 as targets may not only enhance the production rates of element 119 but might also pave the way for the synthesis of even heavier elements, extending up to elements 120 and 121. We delve into the technicalities and feasibility of employing a dual-target method using a $^{48}$Ca beam, exploring new horizons in the quest for the superheavy unknown.

Abstract:Recent advances enabled the discovery of heterometallic molecules for many metals: main group, d-block, lanthanides, and some actinides (U, Th). These complexes have at least two different metals joined by bridging ligands or by direct metal-metal bonding interactions. They are attractive because they can enable chemical cooperativity between metals from different parts of the periodic table. Some heterometallics provide access to unique reactivity and others exhibit physical properties that cannot be accessed by homometallic species. We envisioned that transuranic heterometallics might similarly enable new transuranic chemistry, though synthetic routes to such compounds have yet to be developed. Reported here is the first synthesis of a molecular transuranic complex that contains plutonium (Pu) and cobalt (Co). Our analyses of PuCl3{CoCp[OP(OEt)2]3} showed Pu(iv) and Co(iii) were present and suggested that the Pu(iv) oxidation state was stabilized by the electron donating phosphite ligands. This synthetic method - and the demonstration that Pu(iv) can be stabilized in a heterobimetallic molecular setting - provides a foundation for further exploration of transuranic multimetallic chemistry.

Abstract:The quest for superheavy elements (SHEs) is driven by the desire to find and explore one of the extreme limits of existence of matter. These elements exist solely due to their nuclear shell stabilization. All 15 presently 'known' SHEs (11 are officially 'discovered' and named) up to element 118 are short-lived and are man-made atom-at-a-time in heavy ion induced nuclear reactions. They are identical to the transactinide elements located in the seventh period of the periodic table beginning with rutherfordium (element 104), dubnium (element 105) and seaborgium (element 106) in groups 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Their chemical properties are often surprising and unexpected from simple extrapolations. After hassium (element 108), chemistry has now reached copernicium (element 112) and flerovium (element 114). For the later ones, the focus is on questions of their metallic or possibly noble gas-like character originating from interplay of most pronounced relativistic effects and electron-shell effects. SHEs provide unique opportunities to get insights into the influence of strong relativistic effects on the atomic electrons and to probe 'relativistically' influenced chemical properties and the architecture of the periodic table at its farthest reach. In addition, they establish a test bench to challenge the validity and predictive power of modern fully relativistic quantum chemical models.

Abstract:ConspectusAstatine (At) is the rarest on Earth of all naturally occurring elements, situated below iodine in the periodic table. While only short-lived isotopes (t1/2 ≤ 8.1 h) are known, 211At is the object of growing attention due to its emission of high-energy alpha particles. Such radiation is highly efficient to eradicate disseminated tumors, provided that the radionuclide is attached to a cancer-targeting molecule. The interest in applications of 211At in nuclear medicine translates into the increasing number of cyclotrons able to produce it. Yet, many challenges related to the minute amounts of available astatine are to be overcome in order to characterize its physical and chemical properties. This point is of paramount importance to develop synthetic strategies and solve the labeling instability in current approaches that limits the use of 211At-labeled radiopharmaceuticals. Despite its discovery in the 1940s, only the past decade has seen a significant rise in the understanding of astatine's basic chemical and radiochemical properties, thanks to the development of new analytical and computational tools.In this Account, we give a concise summary of recent advances in the determination of the physicochemical properties of astatine, putting in perspective the duality of this element which exhibits the characteristics both of a halogen and of a metal. Striking features were evidenced in the recent determination of its Pourbaix diagram such as the identification of stable cationic species, At+ and AtO+, contrasting with other halogens. Like metals, these species were shown to form complexes with anionic ligands and to exhibit a particular affinity for organic species bearing soft donor atoms. On the other hand, astatine shares many characteristics with other halogen elements. For instance, the At- species exists in water, but with the least range of EH-pH stability in the halogen series. Astatine can form molecular interactions through halogen bonding, and it was only recently identified as the strongest halogen-bond donor. This ability is nonetheless affected by relativistic effects, which translate to other peculiarities for this heavy element. For instance, the spin-orbit coupling boosts astatine's propensity to form charge-shift bonds, catching up with the behavior of the lightest halogens (fluorine, chlorine).All these new data have an impact on the development of radiolabeling strategies to turn 211At into radiopharmaceuticals. Inspired by the chemistry of iodine, the chemical approaches have sparsely evolved over the past decades and have long been limited to electrophilic halodemetalation reactions to form astatoaryl compounds. Conversely, recent developments have favored the use of the more stable At- species including the aromatic nucleophilic substitution with diaryliodonium salts or the copper-catalyzed halodeboronation of arylboron precursors. However, it is clear that new bonding modalities are necessary to improve the in vivo stability of 211At-labeled aryl compounds. The tools and data gathered over the past decade will contribute to instigate original strategies for overcoming the challenges offered by this enigmatic element. Alternatives to the C-At bond such as the B-At and the metal-At bonds are typical examples of exciting new axes of research.
Boron: a Hunt for Superhard Polymorphs

Abstract:Boron is a unique element, being the only element, all known polymorphs of which are superhard, and all of its crystal structures are distinct from any other element. The electron-deficient bonding in boron explains its remarkable sensitivity to even small concentrations of impurity atoms and allows boron to form peculiar chemical compounds with very different elements. These complications made the study of boron a great challenge, creating also a unique and instructive chapter in the history of science. Strange though it may sound, the discovery of boron in 1808 was ambiguous, with pure boron polymorphs established only starting from the 1950s-1970s, and only in 2007 was the stable phase at ambient conditions determined. The history of boron research from its discovery to the latest discoveries pertaining to the phase diagram of this element, the structure and stability of beta-boron, and establishment of a new high-pressure polymorph, gamma-boron, is reviewed.

Abstract:Abstract The Mendeleev Periodic Table of Chemical Elements delivered a strong impetus to the development of fundamental and applied chemistry, chemical technology, analytical chemistry, and material sciences. Each element under the Periodic Table is an idealized substance with a certain structure and properties as defined by existing theoretical frameworks. In the real world, we deal with substances that are close in composition to the element of Periodic Table under study but differ in the presence of different elements in them – impurities that distort (sometimes radically) the structure and properties of the target research object. For many centuries, humanity has sought to obtain pure substances in order to achieve desired properties. In the second half of the 20 th century, a unique collection of high purity substances was created, which includes samples representing material artifacts, prototypes of elements of Periodic Table that contain record low contents of impurity elements. With ongoing scientific and technological progress, the achieved purity of substances continuously increases and, therefore, their approximation to idealized elements of Periodic Table. This is facilitated by: new technological processes for the production and storage of high purity substances with a constant decrease in the level of impurities; the creation of isotope-friendly substances; complexes of more highly sensitive multi-element analysis methods; identification of the unique properties of high purity substances, bringing them closer to the capabilities of analog elements of Periodic Table and much more. This article is devoted to progress in these areas. Special attention is also paid to the problems in modern analytical chemistry of high purity substances and the use of the latter in the metrology of chemical analysis as the standards of comparison.

Abstract:The availability of radiolabelled probes is important for in vivo studies by positron emission tomography (PET). Among the frontier challenges in F-18-radiochemistry are the interconnected goals of increasing synthetic efficiency and diversity in the construction of F-18-labelled radiotracers. F-18-Radioretrosynthetic strategies implemented to date are typically linear sequences of transformations designed with the aim of introducing the F-18-label ideally in the last step or at least as late as possible. Here we report that convergent F-18-radiochemistry allows for the rapid assembly of functionalised F-18-radiotracers from readily accessible F-18-labelled prosthetic groups. Using multicomponent reactions for proof of concept, Ugi-4CR, Passerini-3CR, Biginelli-3CR and Groebke-3CR were performed successfully using F-18-benzaldehydes and these highly convergent reactions delivered, in high radiochemical yield (RCY), structurally complex F-18-radiotracers with the label positioned on an aryl motif not responsive to direct nucleophilic fluorination. These data establish an unprecedented connection between radiochemistry for PET and the field of multicomponent chemistry and demonstrate that convergent retroradiosynthesis is a powerful strategy expanding dramatically the scope of F-18-prosthetic group radiochemistry. The preparation of F-18-labelled prosthetic groups from [F-18]fluoride ion is commonly performed in many labelling laboratories, so the concept of convergent F-18-radiosynthesis can easily be applied immediately.

Synthesizing Amorphous Precursors Through Control of Local Composition

Abstract:Synthesizing compounds predicted to have exceptional properties that are close to or below the ground state convex hull has proven to be very challenging, as avoiding the formation of more thermodynamically or kinetically stable mixtures of known compounds is often required. A homogenous amorphous phase has been suggested as a very general reaction intermediate. However, the preparation of amorphous phases of controlled composition is also very challenging. We postulated that amorphous intermediates with controlled composition can be made by avoiding the formation of regions with compositions close to that of the known compounds. Specifically, we demonstrated that we could avoid the formation of PbSe and MoSe2 by sequentially depositing nonstoichiometric ultrathin sub-monolayer thickness layers on a nominally room temperature substrate. The substrate temperature needs to be low enough to minimize surface diffusion, preventing agglomeration of elements and resultant concentration gradients. The amount of diffusion required to form nucleation embryos can be controlled by changing the difference between the composition of the film and the stoichiometry of the compound in question. Large enough differences should result in amorphous intermediates in most systems. The presence of more than two elements will further suppress the nucleation of binary compounds, making this approach particularly useful to prepare amorphous precursors for the synthesis of metastable ternary and quaternary compounds.

Abstract:Abstract Background Lead-212 ( 212 Pb, t 1/2 = 10.6 h) and lead-203 ( 203 Pb, t 1/2 = 51.9 h) are an element-equivalent, or a matched theranostic radioisotope pair that show great potential for application in targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), respectively. At TRIUMF we have produced both 203 Pb and 212 Pb using TRIUMF’s TR13 (13 MeV) and 500 MeV cyclotrons, and subsequently purified and evaluated both radioisotopes using a series of pyridine-modified DOTA analogues in comparison to the commercially available chelates DOTA (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) and TCMC (1,4,7,10-tetraaza-1,4,7,10-tetra(2-carbamoylmethyl)cyclododecane). Results Proton irradiation (12.8 MeV) of natural and enriched thallium-203 ( 203 Tl) targets gave 203 Pb saturation yields of 134 ± 25 and 483 ± 3 MBq/μA, respectively. Thorium-228 ( 228 Th, t 1/2 = 1.9 y), a by-product of 232 Th proton spallation on TRIUMF’s main 500 MeV beamline (beamline 1A, BL1A), was recovered to build a 228 Th/ 212 Pb generator with the ability to deliver up to 9–10 MBq of 212 Pb daily. Both lead isotopes were purified via solid phase extraction chromatography (Pb resin), and isolated in an acetate form ([ 203/212 Pb]Pb(OAc) 2 ) suitable for direct radiolabeling of chelators and bioconjugates. A series of cyclen-based chelators (herein referred to as DOTA-1Py, -2Py, and -3Py) along with established chelates DOTA and TCMC were evaluated for their ability to complex both 203 Pb and 212 Pb. All chelates incorporated 212 Pb/ 203 Pb efficiently, with higher radiolabeling yields observed for the 212 Pb-complexes. Conclusion The production of 203 Pb and 212 Pb was established using TRIUMF 13 MeV and 500 MeV cyclotrons, respectively. Both production methods provided radiometals suitable for subsequent radiolabeling reactions using known and novel chelates. Furthermore, the novel chelate DOTA-3Py may be a good candidate for biomolecule conjugation and further theranostic 212 Pb/ 203 Pb studies.

Abstract:The fascination with superheavy elements (SHE) spans the nuclear physics, astrophysics, and theoretical chemistry communities. Extreme relativistic effects govern these elements' chemistry and challenge the traditional notion of the periodic law. The experimental quest for SHE critically depends on theoretical predictions of these elements' properties, especially chemical homology, which allows for successful prototypical experiments with more readily available lighter homologs of SHE. This work is a comprehensive quantum-chemical investigation into astatine (At) as a non-intuitive homolog of element 113, nihonium (Nh). Combining relativistic coupled-cluster and density functional theory approaches, we model the behavior of At and AtOH in thermochromatographic experiments on a pristine gold surface. Insights into the electronic structure of AtOH and NhOH and accurate estimates of At–gold and AtOH–gold adsorption energies rationalize recent experimental findings and justify the use of At as a chemical homolog of Nh for the successful design of future experiments on Nh detection and chemical characterization.

Abstract:Targeted alpha therapy (TAT) pairs the specificity of antigen targeting with the lethality of alpha particles to eradicate cancerous cells. Actinium-225 [225Ac; t1/2 = 9.920(3) days] is an alpha-emitting radioisotope driving the next generation of TAT radiopharmaceuticals. Despite promising clinical results, a fundamental understanding of Ac coordination chemistry lags behind the rest of the Periodic Table due to its limited availability, lack of stable isotopes, and inadequate systems poised to probe the chemical behavior of this radionuclide. In this work, we demonstrate a platform that combines an 8-coordinate synthetic ligand and a mammalian protein to characterize the solution and solid-state behavior of the longest-lived Ac isotope, 227Ac [t1/2 = 21.772(3) years]. We expect these results to direct renewed efforts for 225Ac-TAT development, aid in understanding Ac coordination behavior relative to other +3 lanthanides and actinides, and more broadly inform this element's position on the Periodic Table.

Abstract:The Cover Feature shows a desert landscape in which the pyrazine‐bridged dinuclear guanidinate rare earth complex illuminates the night sky. The molecule resides on a cube whose faces feature spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry as analysis tools. The crystals further indicate that crystalline material was obtained and studied via single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction to unambiguously identify the structure of the molecule. An unprecedented bridge splitting reaction is discussed herein, which shifts chloride anions in favor of a bridging neutral pyrazine. This type of reaction may represent a powerful strategy to isolate higher nuclearity species in the future. DFT methods provided insight into the mechanism of formation.
