Abstract:The number of chemical elements has increased considerably in the last few decades. Most excitingly, these heaviest, man-made elements at the far-end of the Periodic Table are located in the area of the long-awaited superheavy elements. While physical techniques currently play a leading role in these discoveries, the chemistry of superheavy elements is now beginning to be developed. Advanced and very sensitive techniques allow the chemical properties of these elusive elements to be probed. Often, less than ten short-lived atoms, chemically separated one-atom-at-a-time, provide crucial information on basic chemical properties. These results place the architecture of the far-end of the Periodic Table on the test bench and probe the increasingly strong relativistic effects that influence the chemical properties there. This review is focused mainly on the experimental work on superheavy element chemistry. It contains a short contribution on relativistic theory, and some important historical and nuclear aspects.

Abstract:A 3‐month‐old boy with hypotonia at birth succumbed to a congenital myopathy. The major finding in his muscle biopsy corresponded to I‐Z‐I complexes described previously in embryonic skeletal muscle. A few previous myopathy cases have described findings suggestive of I‐Z‐I–like complexes. A mutation affecting mononuclear myoblasts or early myotubes was suspected, although an acquired lesion could not be ruled out. Abstract:The fascination with superheavy elements (SHE) spans the nuclear physics, astrophysics, and theoretical chemistry communities. Extreme relativistic effects govern these elements' chemistry and challenge the traditional notion of the periodic law. The experimental quest for SHE critically depends on theoretical predictions of these elements' properties, especially chemical homology, which allows for successful prototypical experiments with more readily available lighter homologs of SHE. This work is a comprehensive quantum-chemical investigation into astatine (At) as a non-intuitive homolog of element 113, nihonium (Nh). Combining relativistic coupled-cluster and density functional theory approaches, we model the behavior of At and AtOH in thermochromatographic experiments on a pristine gold surface. Insights into the electronic structure of AtOH and NhOH and accurate estimates of At–gold and AtOH–gold adsorption energies rationalize recent experimental findings and justify the use of At as a chemical homolog of Nh for the successful design of future experiments on Nh detection and chemical characterization.

Abstract:Since the 1930s the synthesis of nuclides too unstable to exist naturally on Earth has stretched the periodic table to 118 elements. While the lighter transuranic elements have found uses, the isotopes of those past lawrencium, the superheavy elements, are too unstable to exist outside the laboratory. In the 1970s, leading element discoverers Glenn Seaborg at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and Georgy Flerov, at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, USSR, took interest in a supposed 'island of stability', leading from the nuclear shell model of Maria Goeppert Mayer and Hans Jensen, and predicted elements with so-called magic numbers of protons and neutrons would be far more stable. This review shall look at the historical developments that led to the field of element discovery, the attempts to discover superheavy elements in nature based on the island of stability, and the subsequent successful synthesis of elements and the implications of their half-lives and properties. This article is part of the theme issue 'Mendeleev and the periodic table'.

Abstract:The physical and chemical knowledge representing today's scientific basis of the periodic table of elements (Figure 1) has perpetually developed over the past one and a half centuries. However, the general face of the periodic table did not change strongly from the initial one suggested by D. I. Mendeleev [1] D. Mendeleev, J. Russ. Chem. Soc. 1 (1869) 60 (in Russian); Z. für Chem. 12 (1869) 405 (in German). [Google Scholar] in 1869, despite a lot more new elements having been introduced. This demonstrates impressively the fundamentality of this systematic ordering scheme of the elements. Mendeleev ordered phenomenologically the 66 elements known in his time by superposition of molecular weight and chemical properties, not knowing about their atomic structure. Nowadays, it is general knowledge that the periodic table universally orders more than 100 elements with regard to their atomic numbers (Z) and their electronic structure, which is responsible for the chemical properties (Figure 1). Thus, the periodic table turns out to still be a versatile and powerful representation of systematic changes of chemical properties among the elements.

Abstract:For more than 23 centuries, from Democritus (460–370 BC) to Dalton (1766–1844), the material world around us was believed to consist of the smallest indivisible particles—atoms, those building blocks of the Universe. A total of just 36 chemical elements—types of atoms known to Dalton, were considered the alphabet of the world creation. The periodic table by D. I. Mendeleev [1] that demonstrated the regularity in the chemical behavior of the 63 elements known by that time showed that the atom (element) is not indivisible, since it has an internal structure that is the basis of this regularity. Indeed, 26 years later J. J. Thomson discovered the smallest negatively charged particles in the atom—the electrons [2], and 14 years later Ernst Rutherford proposed the well-known planetary model of the atom [3] in the form of a nucleus that carries almost the entire mass and all the positive charge, and electrons that move around the nucleus at a large distance. In the earliest theoretical model [4], the atomic nucleus was considered to be a spherical uniformly charged drop of a specific liquid-like substance. On the basis of the liquid-drop model G. Gamov himself developed a theory of alpha-decay, the author of the well-known formula C. F. von Weizsäcker calculated the binding energy of nuclei [5], and N. Bohr and J. A. Wheeler developed their liquid-drop-based theory of nuclear fission [6].

Abstract:We use recently developed efficient versions of the configuration interaction method to perform {\em ab initio} calculations of the spectra of superheavy elements seaborgium (Sg, $Z=106$), bohrium (Bh, $Z=107$), hassium (Hs, $Z=108$) and meitnerium (Mt, $Z=109$). We calculate energy levels, ionization potentials, isotope shifts and electric dipole transition amplitudes. Comparison with lighter analogs reveals significant differences caused by strong relativistic effects in superheavy elements. Very large spin-orbit interaction distinguishes subshells containing orbitals with a definite total electron angular momentum $j$. This effect replaces Hund's rule holding for lighter elements.

Abstract:The studieson structure and reaction for superheavy elements are reviewed. Based on constrained relativistic mean field(CRMF) theory, binding energiesof elements from Z=102 to Z=112, which can be measured experimentally, as a function of deformation arecalculated, and the properties of equilibrium and saddle point of these nuclides are obtained. Using the single particle levels based on CRMF, the shell effects are obtained with Structinsky method. The cross sections of the cold fusion are estimated by applying the structure information. Theoretical result and experimental measure are in a good agreement, and the theoretical prediction of cross section of element Z=118 is one order small than the earlier prediction and more close to theexperimental upper limit. The influences of the physical quantityon the cross section are discussed. Finally, thedescription for nuclei beyond the dripline, e. g.,1800Sn, is given by Relativistic Continuum HartreeBogoliubov theory.
Periodic Law of Chemistry Overturns for Superheavy Elements

Abstract:The Periodic Law is one of the greatest discoveries in human history. Chemical elements in the same group of the Periodic Table possess similar valence states and other physico-chemical properties. With the increase of atomic number Z, the relativistic effects become so strong that the super-heavy elements tend to exhibit properties notably different from their lighter congeners. Here we report that the traditionally mono- or di-valent heavy s-block elements (87Fr, 88Ra, 119E, 120E) exhibit unusual penta- or hexa-valency at ambient conditions. Due to common quantum-mechanical and relativity effects, some atomic-core electrons of the heaviest s-block elements become sufficiently activated for chemical bonding, so that they no longer behave as strictly low-valent alkali and alkaline-earth elements. The classic Periodic Law discovered by Mendeleev and others since the 1860s has thus broken down for such super-heavy elements and beyond.

Abstract:We review the prediction of fission properties of super-heavy elements (SHE) by self-consistent mean-field models thereby concentrating on the widely used Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) approach. We explain briefly the theoretical tools: the SHF model, the calibration of model parameters together with statistical analysis of uncertainties and correlations, and the involved computation of fission lifetimes. We present an overview of fission stability in comparison to other decay channels over the whole landscape of SHE reaching deep into the $r$-process domain. The main emphasis lies on a detailed discussion of the various ingredients determining eventually the fission properties. The main result is that fission is an involved process which explores many different influences with almost equal share, basic bulk properties (also known as liquid-drop model parameters), pairing strengths, and shell effects. %

Abstract:In order to characterize the mass density of superheavy elements, we solve numerically the relativistic Thomas-Fermi model of an atom. To obtain a range of mass densities for superheavy matter, this model is supplemented with an estimation of the number of electrons shared between individual atoms. Based on our computation, we expect that elements in the island of nuclear stability around $Z = 164$ will populate a mass density range of $36.0 - 68.4$ g/cm$^3$. We then extend our method to the study of macroscopic alpha particle nuclear matter condensate drops.

Abstract:We reveal that inclusion of fission barrier, nuclear level densities, neutron and fission decay widths in a better way in the advanced statistical method and dinuclear system model can lead to reproduce well the measured production cross sections of the cold and hot fusion reactions in the range . In addition, we show that the optimal beam energies, where the production cross section reaches its maximum, can also be effectively determined using quasielastic barrier distribution curves. This theoretical approach helps us to verify the cause of low production cross section measured for the super-heavy element (SHE) Nh with the reaction Zn + Bi and null results from the reaction Kr+ Pb used for synthesizing the SHE Z =118. Furthermore, the same has been employed to explore the reason for the failure of many trials in synthesizing the SHEs for and 120. ER cross sections at the optimal energies for a few heavy-ion reactions in synthesizing the SHE and 120 are seen to be measurable. Thus, the synthesis of the SHEs for 119 and 120 is on the cards.

Abstract:We have calculated production cross sections of new superheavy elements with atomic number Z=119,120 in the fusion-evaporation reactions of $^{48}$Ca+$^{252}$Es, $^{48}$Ca+$^{257}$Fm, $^{49}$Sc+$^{252}$Es, $^{49}$Sc+$^{251}$Cf, $^{50}$Ti+$^{247}$Bk, $^{50}$Ti+$^{251}$Cf, $^{51}$V+$^{247}$Cm, $^{51}$V+$^{247}$Cf, $^{54}$Cr+$^{243}$Am, $^{54}$Cr+$^{247}$Cm, $^{56}$Mn+$^{244}$Pu, $^{56}$Mn+$^{243}$Am, $^{60}$Fe+$^{237}$Np, $^{60}$Fe+$^{244}$Pu, $^{61}$Co+$^{238}$U, $^{61}$Co+$^{237}$Np, $^{64}$Ni+$^{231}$Pa, $^{64}$Ni+$^{238}$U, $^{65}$Cu+$^{232}$Th, $^{65}$Cu+$^{231}$Pa, and $^{68}$Zn+$^{232}$Th within the dinuclear system model systematically. The inner fusion barriers have been extracted from the driving potential or potential energy surface which could be used to predict the relative fusion probability roughly. The influence of mass asymmetry of the colliding partners on the production of new superheavy elements (SHE) has been investigated systematically. It is found that fusion probability increase along with the increasing mass asymmetry of colliding systems. The Ti-induced reactions have the largest cross-sections of the new SHE. The dependence of production cross-sections of new superheavy elements on the isospin of projectile nuclei has been discussed. The new SHE of $^{289-295}$119 has been predicted as the synthesis cross sections around serval picobarns in the $^{46,48,50,52}$Ti-induced reactions. Production cross-section of the element of $^{295}$120 has been evaluated as large as 1 picobarn in the reactions $^{46}$Ti ($^{251}$Cf, 2n) $^{295}$120 at $E^*$ = 26 MeV. The optimal projectile-target combinations and beam energies for producing new SHE with atomic number Z=119-120 are proposed for the forthcoming experiments.

Abstract:We looked at Xe-induced fusion reactions that resulted in the formation of the SHE Z=119. In this view, we considered four projectiles such as Xe, Xe, Xe, and Xe on Tb. For the study of evaporation residue cross-sections, we investigated 12 fusion processes in total. Using an advanced statistical model, we assessed the probability of compound nucleus formation ( ), survival probability( ), and evaporation residue cross-sections ( ). The measured ( ) at optimal energy decreases as the mass number of projectile nuclei increases. In contrast, as the projectile-mass number increases, so does the likelihood of survival. For Xe+ Tb fusion reaction, the and are found higher value. When Xe-induced fusion events were considered, the expected cross-sections, which are in the order larger than femtobarn range, will serve as a roadmap for the synthesis of the SHE Z=119.

Abstract:Heavy-element research with SHIP at GSI is reviewed including the discovery of the chemical elements bohrium to copernicium, experimental developments, cold fusion of heavy ions, and the discovery of a shell region around hassium. Elements bohrium and heavier are located beyond the limit of liquid-drop stability. They exist by shell stabilization. A universal, sensitive, and fast method: in-flight separation and identification of single atomic nuclei has been developed with the velocity filter SHIP and the detector system to measure decay sequences of individual atoms. Research with single atomic nuclei including detection methods, identification, and physics results will be discussed. Experiments with actinide targets as well as prospects with NUSTAR at FAIR will be addressed.

Abstract:We calculate the formation cross sections of transactinides (superheavy elements), as well as heavy actinides (No and Lr), which have been or might be obtained in fusion reactions with the evaporation of only one neutron. We use both more realistic fusion barrier and survival probability of the compound nucleus in comparison with the original phenomenological model [Phys. Rev. C 59, 2634 (1999)] that prompted the Berkeley experiment on the synthesis of a new superheavy element 118 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 1104 (1999)]. Calculations are performed for asymmetric and symmetric target-projectile combinations and for reactions with stable and radioactive-ion beams. The formation cross sections measured at GSI-Darmstadt for transactinides and heavy actinides, as well as that for superheavy element 118 reported by the LBNL-Berkeley group, are reproduced within a factor of 2.4, on average. Based on the obtained relatively large cross sections, we predict that optimal reactions with stable beams for the synthesis of so far unobserved superheavy elements 119, 120, and 121 are 209Bi(86Kr, 1n)294119, 208Pb(88Sr, 1n)295120, and 209Bi(88Sr, 1n)296121, respectively. This is because of the magic of both the target and the projectile that leads to larger Q value and, consequently, lower effective fusion barrier with larger transmission probability. The same effect is responsible for relatively large cross sections predicted for the symmetric reactions 136Xe(124Sn, 1n)259Rf, 136Xe(136Xe, 1n)271Hs,138Ba(136Xe, 1n)273110, and 140Ce(136Xe, 1n)275112. Although shell effects in the magic nuclei 124Sn, 136Xe, 138Ba, and 140Ce are not as strong as in 208Pb and 209Bi, they act on both the target and the projectile and lead to the prediction of measurable cross sections.

Abstract:Chemistry has arrived on the shore of the Island of Stability with the first chemical investigation of the superheavy elements Cn, 113, and 114. The results of three experimental series leading to first measured thermodynamic data and qualitatively evaluated chemical properties for these elements are described. An interesting volatile compound class has been observed in the on-line experiments for the elements Bi and Po. Hence, an exciting chemical study of their heavier transactinide homologues, elements 115 and 116 is suggested.

Abstract:The rapid neutron capture or 'r process' of nucleosynthesis is believed to be responsible for the production of approximately half the natural abundance of heavy elements found on the periodic table above iron (with proton number $Z=26$) and all of the heavy elements above bismuth ($Z=83$). In the course of creating the actinides and potentially superheavies, the r process must necessarily synthesize superheavy nuclei (those with extreme proton numbers, neutron numbers or both) far from isotopes accessible in the laboratory. Many questions about this process remain unanswered, such as 'where in nature may this process occur?' and 'what are the heaviest species created by this process?' In this review, we survey at a high level the nuclear properties relevant for the heaviest elements thought to be created in the r process. We provide a synopsis of the production and destruction mechanisms of these heavy species, in particular the actinides and superheavies, and discuss these heavy elements in relation to the astrophysical r process. We review the observational evidence of actinides found in the Solar system and in metal-poor stars and comment on the prospective of observing heavy-element production in explosive astrophysical events. Finally, we discuss the possibility that future observations and laboratory experiments will provide new information in understanding the production of the heaviest elements.

Abstract:The production of (283)112 in Ca-48 induced nuclear reactions was investigated using physical and chemical separation techniques. In the reaction Ca-48 on U-238, four events were registered at the SHIP velocity filter. The mean atomic mass of the evaporation residues (EVR) was determined to be 286 +/- 10. In the Ca-48 on Pu-242 reaction, five events were found using the IVO thermochromatographic system. The observed chemical properties are typical for group 12 elements. Therefore, the atomic number is deduced to be 112. The measured decay properties of all events obtained in both experiments are in agreement with the results published from the DGFRS group. Hence, the findings bolster the production and observation of (283)112, (287)114, and (291)116.
