Abstract:Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were irradiated by electron beam and then grafted by acrylic acid (AA) and sodium 4-Styrenesulfonate (SSS). The degree of grafting was affected by irradiation dose, grafting time, grafting temperature, monomer concentration, monomer ratio, and pH of solution. The composition and microstructure were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The modified membranes were characterized through water contact angle, water flux measurement and fouling-resistant experiment.

Abstract:Nano-TiO2 immobilized antioxidant (TiO2-KH550-AG) was prepared to improve the ageing resistance of thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) exposed to UV/O-3. TiO2 nanoparticles were firstly modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) and then reacted with the antioxidant, 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (AG), through the acyl chloride reaction followed by the amidation. FTIR, XPS and TGA measurements confirmed that the antioxidant (AG) was chemically immobilized onto the nano TiO2 surfaces. TPV/TiO2-KH550-AG nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing. SEM observation showed that TiO2-KH550-AG was homogeneously dispersed into the matrix of TPV. The UV/O-3 ageing test of the samples was carried out in the environment with constant UV intensity of 1.40 mW/ cm(2) and ozone concentration of 100 +/- 4 mg/m(3). The ageing resistance behavior of the TPV/TiO2-KH550AG nanocomposites was evaluated by the changes of surface morphology, mechanical properties and carbonyl index during the UV/O-3 ageing test. It was observed that the TPV/TiO2-KH550-AG exhibited high stability during the process of UV/O-3 ageing. The results revealed that the anti-ageing efficiency of TiO2-KH550-AG was superior to the mixture of the corresponding AG and modified TiO2, owing to the better dispersion and migration resistance of TiO2-KH550-AG. Abstract:Commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were modified by dip-coating and crosslinking hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on the membrane surface. The antioxidation performance of the modified PVDF membranes was evaluated via exposing the modified membranes to sodium hypochlorite and potassium permanganate solutions for 5-30 days, respectively. The evaluation was based on the influences of the two oxidants on the permeability, rejection, and hydrophility of the modified membranes, which were characterized by water flux, ink rejection, water contact angle, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The XPS and water contact angle results show that the hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes was significantly improved when PVA was crosslinked on the surface of PVDF membranes. When the modified membranes had been treated with sodium hypochlorite or potassium permanganate for 30 days, the permeability and hydrophilicity were basically maintained and the rejection was slightly decreased. XPS and XRD indicated that some of PVAs coated on the membrane surface could be oxidized and peeled. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:<p>In a practical project of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane for polymer flooding wastewater treatment, the deterioration of membrane performance was observed after 4 years of operation. The aging effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) on PVDF ultrafiltration membranes were systematically studied, including the membrane properties, filtration performance, and fouling behaviors. During the NaClO aging process, chemical transformations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) additives dominated the changes in membrane intrinsic characteristics, and the kinetic behavior of PVP decomposition was proposed, which was closely related to the evolution of the membrane pore size. For aged membranes, due to the changes in intrinsic characteristics, the antifouling performance significantly declined: the pseudo-stable flux with feeding solution and flux recovery after physical cleaning decreased by ∼55% and ∼62%, respectively, after 20 days of aging. The intermolecular forces in combination with the interfacial free energies were used to evaluate the fouling behaviors of aged membranes. The increased energies indicated the more spontaneous foulant‒membrane adhesion and stabilized fouling layers, which deteriorated the irreversible fouling resistance, increased the initial fouling rates and reduced the flux recovery after physical cleaning. Compared to intermolecular forces, foulant‒membrane interfacial free energies can serve as the more sensitive and reliable indicators of membrane fouling.</p>

Abstract:This study compared the effects of chemical aging on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes fabricated with the methods of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) (named NIPS-PVDF) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) (named TIPS-PVDF). The chemical solutions of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were chosen at the concentration of 5000mg/L. The equivalence of 5 and 10years was respectively selected as the time of aging. The physicochemical evolutions of membrane aging are characterized on the base of morphology analysis, chemical components, permeation ability and mechanical properties. The aging of NIPS-PVDF membrane led to the elimination of surface hydrophilic additives, while NaOH focused on the dehydrofluorination process resulting in the formation of conjugated chains of polyene on the skeleton structure. The chemical components of the surface of TIPS-PVDF membrane were removed continuously during the aging processes of both NaClO and NaOH, which was caused by the saponification of surface additives and the chain scissions of skeleton structure, but without producing any obvious conjugated chains of polyene. All the aging processes led to the increase of contact angle and the decrease of mechanical properties, and the permeability was reduced first and increased later due to the enlargement of surface membrane pores and membrane block. With the influence of membrane aging, selectivity of membrane was decreased (except coliform bacteria). At the beginning of filtration, the turbidity and particle count were at relatively high levels and declined with the filtration process.

Abstract:The synchrotron radiation X-ray was used both as the irradiation source and testing tool for the PVDF membranes in-situ. The structural evolution of the PVDF membranes irradiated by the synchrotron radiation X-ray was analyzed by in-situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)/wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and ex-situ (ESR, FTIR and XRD) characterization methods. The alkyl radicals and carbon-carbon double bonds appeared in the irradiated PVDF membranes due to the irradiation effect, which confirmed that PVDF membranes first cracked, followed by cross-linked, during irradiation. The disappearance of the scattering peak at q = 0.05 Å−1 indicated that the synchrotron radiation X-ray destroyed the long periodic structure. The X-ray irradiation destroyed the crystalline region of the irradiated PVDF membranes, thus, leading to a decline in the crystallinity. Thus, overall, the in-situ irradiation and analysis could effectively monitor the structural evolution of the PVDF membranes during the radiation process and reduce the influence of time intervals between irradiation and measurement.

Abstract:Chemical ageing of ultrafiltration membranes related to drinking water operation is not a new problem, but literature documenting sieving properties and fouling behaviors of aged membranes are scarce. This paper shows how the surface chemistry evolution of polysulfone (PSF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes can lead to the formation of distinct membrane properties when exposed to sodium hypochlorite solutions. The surface physicochemical evolutions of aged membranes are characterized based on chemical composition (ATR-FTIR and XPS), water contact angle analysis, and surface zeta potential test. The results indicate the ageing mechanism and evolutions between PSF and PVDF membranes are totally different. In addition, the retention ability and fouling propensity of the aged membrane are also investigated by three different kinds of foulant (Dextran/HA/BSA). Surface hydrophilization of aged PVDF membrane enhanced its retention toward neutral (Dextran) and hydrophilic charged foulant (BSA), but the fouling type of aged PVDF membranes remained the same, in spite of the initial flux increasing greatly. In terms of PSF membranes, pore enlargement could be verified by a seemingly inconsistent result of dextran sieving experiments and the decreased HA rejection rate. Moreover, the increased negative charge on aged PSF membrane surface have a great impact on its sieving property and fouling propensity, especially for the charged and hydrophilic BSA. With the regression data of Hermia's model, the main fouling type of aged PSF membranes was proven changed to pore blocking, and the changes can ascribe to its altered surface chemical characteristic and pore diameter.
Effect of different chemical cleaning agents on the ageing of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane

Abstract:To investigate the aging characteristics of the ultrafiltration membrane used in water treatment, the polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was aged with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and citric acid (H3Cit), respectively. The effect of low-concentration cleaning agents on the aging of the PVDF membrane was investigated, with the analyzing of the parameters of pure water flux, total organic carbon ( TOC) rejection, tensile strength, field emission scanning electron microscopy ( FESEM) , contact angle and fourier transform infrared ( FTIR) . Experimental result shows that acid, alkali and oxidant, especially NaOH and NaClO, changed the structure and performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane. After exposed to NaOH, Na2CO3 and NaClO for 75 days, the total organic carbon (TOC) rejection efficiencies decrease from 36%to 15%, 27%and 17%, respectively. Compared to the virgin membrane, the tensile strength and ultimate elongation of the membrane which aged 15 days with NaOH declines by 11% and 20%, respectively. The negative effect of alkali and oxidant on mechanical performance and TOC rejection was higher than that of HCl and H3 Cit, and the decreasing of hydrophilicity of the membrane exposed to NaClO is more significant than that of the other cleaning agents. The dehydrofluorination, which can generate of C=C and C=O bond, is one of the most important reasons that caused the ageing of PVDF membrane.
Effect of NaClO and NaOH at Low Agent Concentration on the Ageing of PVDF Ultrafiltration Membrane

Abstract:The polyvinylidene (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was aged using NaClO and NaOH. The selected concentrations of the agents were 0.026mol/L and 0.025mol/L, respectively. The effect of low-concentration cleaning agents on the aging of the PVDF membrane was investigated. The virgin membrane and membranes exposed to cleaning agents were characterized using pure water flux, membrane pore size distribution, total organic carbon (TOC) rejection efficiency, tensile strength, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), contact angle and attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The results indicated that the average pore size of the membrane exposed to cleaning agents increased than that of the virgin membrane. After exposed to NaClO and NaOH, the total organic carbon (TOC) rejection efficiencies decreased from 36.0% to 16.2%~32.4% and13.9%~24.4%, respectively. The dehydrofluorination occurred during the aging process, which was indicated by the increased peak intensity of CC and CO. The chemical composition and structure of the membrane were changed by the chemical cleaning agents and this caused the reduction of membrane hydrophilicity. The tensile strength and ultimate elongation reduced along with the increased aging time. The impact of NaOH on the mechanical property of membrane was more significant than that of NaClO.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is one of the most used membrane materials in the water industries, and the PVDF membrane can be fabricated majorly through non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The differences in membrane aging of NIPS-PVDF and TIPS-PVDF remain unclear. In this study, the agings of commercially available NIPS-PVDF and TIPS-PVDF membranes were investigated in the pilot-scale MBRs experiment as well as in the batch soaking tests. The raw PVDF powders in different crystalline polymorphs were also subjected to aging tests to examine the relation between PVDF polymorphous structure and aging. The results showed that the NIPS-PVDF membrane experienced more severe aging in the pilot-scale MBR experiment in comparison with the TIPS-PVDF membrane. Acid aging dislodged and eliminated the additives in the membrane, but did not attack the PVDF. NIPS-PVDF membrane was the dominant β PVDF phase, which was more susceptible to dehydrochlorination in alkaline oxide aging. The thin top layer in the asymmetric structure of the NIPS-PVDF membrane resulted in its vulnerability against alkaline oxide aging. The α PVDF phase and the symmetric structure of the TIPS-PVDF membrane contributed to its greater stability in alkaline oxide aging. Overall, the results can provide a basis for selecting a chemical cleaning strategy for PVDF membranes, and for improving the anti-aging characteristics of the PVDF in the membrane fabrication.

Abstract:In the context of designing a photocatalytic self-cleaning/low-fouling membrane, the stability of PVDF-PVP-TiO2 hollow-fiber membranes under UV irradiation has been studied. The effect of irradiation power, aqueous environment composition and fouling state on the properties of the membranes has been investigated. With this aim, SEM observations, chemical analysis and tensile strength measurements have been conducted. The results indicate that pristine membranes that undergo UV irradiation in ultra-pure water are significantly degraded due to attacks of OH° radicals. However, when methylene blue, used as a model pollutant, is introduced in the aqueous environment, OH° radicals preferentially react with this molecule rather than the membranes, successfully preserving the original properties of the latter. The presence of an adsorbed BSA layer (pre-fouling by immersion) on the surface of the membrane delays membrane aging, as the BSA layer is degraded by radicals instead of the membrane material. The degradation of the BSA layer also validates the self-cleaning properties of the membrane. However, when membranes are pre-fouled by filtration of a 2 g/L BSA solution, delay to aging is less. This is because OH° radicals do not reach BSA molecules that are trapped inside the membrane pores, and therefore react with the membrane material.

Abstract:Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a commonly applied cleaning agent for ultrafiltration membranes in water and wastewater treatment. Long-term exposure to NaClO might change the properties and performance of polymeric membranes, and ultimately shorten membrane lifespan. Active species in NaClO solution vary with solution pH, and the aging effects can change depending on the membrane material. In this study, the aging of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyethersulfone (PES) membranes by NaClO at pH 3-11 was investigated by examining variations in chemical composition, surface charge, surface morphology, mechanical strength, permeability, and retention ability. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), which was blended in both membranes, was oxidized and dislodged due to NaClO aging at all investigated pH values, but the oxidation products and dislodgement ratio of PVP varied with solution pH. For the PVDF membrane, NaClO aging at pH 3-11 caused a moderate increase in permeability and decreased retention due to the oxidation and release of PVP. The tensile strength decreased only at pH 11 because of the defluorination of PVDF molecules. For the PES membrane, NaClO aging at all investigated pH resulted in chain scission of PES molecules, which was favored at pH 7 and 9, potentially due to the formation of free radicals. Therefore, a decrease in tensile strength and retention ability, as well as an increase in permeability, occurred in the PES membrane for NaClO aging at pH 3-11. Overall, the results can provide a basis for selecting chemical cleaning conditions for PVDF and PES membranes.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) technology using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane has been widely applied to water and wastewater treatment due to its low cost and simple operation process. However, PVDF-based UF membrane always encountered the issue of membrane biofouling that greatly impacted the filtration performance. In this study, we prepare a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-loaded PVDF (Ag/PVDF) UF membrane by an in-situ photoreduction method to mitigate the membrane biofouling. Different from the previously reported method, AgNPs were synthesized in-situ by a UV photoreduction process, in which Ag+ ions were reduced to zero-valent Ag nanoparticles by the photo-induced reducing radicals. Antibacterial experiments showed that the inhibition efficiency of Ag/PVDF membrane to Escherichia coli reached up to ~ 99% after antibacterial treatment for 24 h. In comparison with the pristine PVDF membrane, Ag/PVDF membrane possessed a lower water contact angle (83.7° vs. 38.1°), and its pure water flux increased by 23.7%, and a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection efficiency was maintained. In addition, the high stability of the Ag/PVDF composite membrane was confirmed by the extremely low releasing amount of Ag. This study provides a novel strategy for the preparation of metal nanoparticle-incorporated Ag/PVDF ultrafiltration composite membrane showing favorable antibacterial performance and stability.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the effects of gamma rays on various properties of poly(1,1-difluoroethylene) (PVDF) membranes under different irradiation conditions. The effects of 60Co γ-ray irradiation on the hydrophilicity, permeability, and mechanical performances of the PVDF membranes were discussed. Results showed that the size of the radiation dose rate had almost no effect on the performance of the membranes, as determined by the total radiation dose. The fracture and collapse of the PVDF structure under anaerobic conditions were obviously lower than those under aerobic conditions. Advanced characterization methods confirmed that the initial impact of gamma rays on the PVDF membranes occurred between 50 and 200 kGy. When the total dose exceeded 200 kGy, structural collapse and chain scission caused by the oxidative degradation mechanism became widespread, thereby leading to the relaxation of the PVDF network and the decline in properties. This study provides valuable information for the application of PVDF membranes to radioactive wastewater and clarifies the mechanism of membrane irradiation degradation to help prolong the service life of membranes. In addition, low total irradiation dose can embellish polymers and thus provide a feasible method for modifying and grafting polymer membranes in the future.

Abstract:The synergistic effects between organic antioxidants with metal ion chelation ability and inorganic radical scavengers were investigated. The different perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) composite membranes were prepared by single doping and codoping of alizarin (AZR) and cerium ions. AZR and cerium ion codoping not only significantly enhanced the oxidative stability of the membrane but also lessened both the migration of cerium ions from the membrane and the ionic cross-linkages of cerium ions with sulfonic acid groups. AZR/Ce codoping of the PFSA composite membrane exhibited a maximum power density of 966 mW cm−2 at 75 °C under 80% RH, which was 89.45% of that of the pristine PFSA membrane, whereas only 79.37% remained for cerium ion single doping of the membrane under the same conditions. The AZR/Ce-codoped PFSA composite membrane released much less fluoride than the single-doped PFSA, AZR, or cerium ion composite membranes. The antioxidation effects of AZR/Ce codoping of the PFSA composite membrane were also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical hydrogen crossover analysis, and cell performance analysis. Notably, the open-circuit voltage (OCV) test indicated that the AZR/Ce-codoped PFSA composite membrane was still viable after 456 h of testing, whereas the other membranes were seriously damaged.

Abstract:Commercial nanofiltration (NF) membranes based on polyamides may experience a decline in permeation performance after prolonged operation. The short lifespan of NF membranes will lead to waste and additional carbon emissions. Thus, rejuvenating membranes and extending their lifespan seem more meaningful than investigating new materials. In this paper, polyamide NF membranes were modified with various polyphenol monomers to improve their permeation performance. The effects of different polyphenols on pore size, surface morphology, and permeation performance of the NF membranes were thoroughly investigated. After modification with tannic acid, the NF membrane exhibits improved salt rejection while experiencing an acceptable decrease in water flux. It should be noted that the commercial NF membrane element fabricated by Koch can recover its Na2SO4 rejection from 83.0% to 94.2% and demonstrate long-term stability after rejuvenation with tannic acid. Combined with the environmental friendliness of polyphenols, this straightforward modification method has the potential for prolonging the operational lifespan of industrial NF membrane products.

Abstract:A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was modified by dispersing nano-sized alumina (Al2O3) particles uniformly in a PVDF solution (19% polymer weight). Membranes were prepared by a phase-inversion process and using UF experiments comparing water flux and, molecular-weight cut-offs for the wet membranes. The contact angle between water and the membrane surface was measured in order to quantify the hydrophilicity changes of the membrane surface. Membranes surface morphology, surface and cross-sectional structures, and nanometer-particle distribution on the membrane surface were examined by atomic-force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and confocal laser-scanning microscopy (CLSM), respectively. Thermal analysis (DSC) was performed in order to investigate the interactions between membrane components. The effects of the nanometer Al2O3-particles concentration in the polymer dope on the permeation properties, membrane strength, and anti-fouling performance were examined. The experimental results indicated that Al2O3–PVDF composite membranes exhibit significant differences in surface properties and intrinsic properties due to nanometer-particles addition.

Abstract:Herein, a free-radical scavenger platform was first utilized to prepare self-cleaning ultrafiltration membranes. First, a polydopamine (PDA) layer was attached onto the surface of a polysulfone (PSf) supporting membrane via dopamine׳s self-polymerization. Then, amine-functionalized TiO2 (TiO2-NH2) nanoparticles were chemically bonded with the PDA layer via amine-catechol adduct formation. Consequently, a self-protected TiO2/PDA/PSf composite ultrafiltration membrane with self-cleaning property was obtained. The photocatalytic TiO2 was decorated on the TiO2/PDA/PSf surface. Compared with the conventional TiO2+PSf membrane prepared by a blending method, the TiO2/PDA/PSf membrane enlarged the contact area between the photocatalytic nanoparticles and contaminants and hence had improved efficiency of photocatalytic degradation. In addition, the interlayer PDA, acting as a free-radical scavenger, protected the PSf supporting membrane from being attacked by free radicals during UV irradiation. Therefore, such a sandwich-like structure bestowed both good self-cleaning property and performance stability upon the TiO2/PDA/PSf ultrafiltration membrane. We found that the TiO2/PDA/PSf ultrafiltration membrane still possessed excellent permeability and separation ability even after a nine-day UV irradiation, while the performance of the TiO2+PSf one began to deteriorate after only one-day UV irradiation. Therefore, we believe that the free-radical scavenger platform is a promising approach to prepare self-cleaning membranes with good performance stability.
Hyper-Cross-Linked Additives That Impede Aging and Enhance Permeability in Thin Polyacetylene Films for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:Membrane materials with high permeability to solvents while rejecting dissolved contaminants are crucial to lowering the energy costs associated with liquid separations. However, the current lack of stable high-permeability materials require innovative engineering solutions to yield high-performance, thin membranes using stable polymers with low permeabilities. Poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne] (PTMSP) is one of the most permeable polymers but is extremely susceptible to physical aging. Despite recent developments in anti-aging polymer membranes, this research breakthrough has yet to be demonstrated on thin PTMSP films supported on porous polymer substrates, a crucial step toward commercializing anti-aging membranes for industrial applications. Here we report the development of scalable, thin film nanocomposite membranes supported on polymer substrates that are resistant to physical aging while having high permeabilities to alcohols. The selective layer is made up of PTMSP and nanoporous polymeric additives. The nanoporous additives provide additional passageways to solvents, enhancing the high permeability of the PTMSP materials further. Through intercalation of polyacetylene chains into the sub-nm pores of organic additives, physical aging in the consequent was significantly hindered in continuous long-term operation. Remarkably we also demonstrate that the additives enhance both membrane permeability and rejection of dissolved contaminants across the membranes, as ethanol permeability at 5.5 × 10-6 L m m-2 h-1 bar-1 with 93% Rose Bengal (1017.6 g mol-1) rejection, drastically outperforming commercial and state-of-the-art membranes. These membranes can replace energy-intensive separation processes such as distillation, lowering operation costs in well-established pharmaceutical production processes.

Abstract:Enhancing the chemical durability of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes is important in developing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this paper, a novel expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) reinforced PFSA membrane with nature organic naringin (NAR) as radical scavenger (PFSA@ePTFE/NAR) was prepared by a simple solution -cast method. NAR exhibited an excellent radical scavenging ability and does not influence the original PFSA structure. A comparison between NAR and Ce3+ showed that NAR had higher free radical scavenging ability. PFSA@ePTFE/NAR shows high proton conductivity of 153.1 mS cm( -1) in water at 80 C-degrees, high tensile strength of 50.5 MPa, and good output single cell performance. The addition of 1 wt% NAR significantly reduced the fluoride ion release rate of the membrane by 81% after the 96 h Fenton's test, and prolonged the lifetime of the membrane in cell as demonstrated by single -cell tests and open -circuit voltage tests.
