Abstract:The synthesis of porous organic polymer materials with nanoscale range has long been an important science subject and received an increasing level of research interest owing to their essential properties merging both of the porous materials and polymers such as low skeleton density, processability, easy functionality, and diverse synthetic methods. In this chapter, several porous polymer materials including covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), and macroporous polymers from high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) will be introduced as well as their diversiform synthetic methods and potential applications including gas storage, carbon capture, separation, catalysis, sensing, energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:A new generation of porous polymers was made for various energy-related applications, e.g., as fuel cell membranes, as electrode materials for batteries, for gas storage, partly from renewable resources. This review intends to catch this emerging field by reporting on a variety of different approaches to make high performing polymers porous. This includes template techniques, polymers with inherent microporosity, polymer frameworks by ionothermal polymerization, and the polymerization of carbon from appropriate precursors and by hydrothermal polymerization. In this process, we try to not only identify the current status of the field, but also point to open question and tasks to identify the potentially relevant progress.

Abstract:Extensive employment of biomaterials in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications is considered to be of prime importance. As expected, oil based polymer materials were gradually replaced by natural or synthetic biopolymers due to their well-known intrinsic characteristics such as biodegradability, non-toxicity and biocompatibility. Literature on this subject was found to be expanding, especially in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications. Introduction of porosity into a biomaterial broadens the scope of applications. In addition, increased porosity can have a beneficial effect for the applications which exploit their exceptional ability of loading, retaining and releasing of fluids. Different applications require a unique set of pore characteristics in the biopolymer matrix. Various pore morphologies have different characteristics and contribute different performances to the biopolymer matrix. Fabrication methods for bio-based porous materials more related to the choice of material. By choosing the appropriate combination of fabrication technique and biomaterial employment, one can obtain tunable pore characteristic to fulfill the requirements of desired application. In our previous review, we described the literature related to biopolymers and fabrication techniques of porous materials. This paper we will focus on the biomedical and microbiological applications of bio-based porous materials.

Abstract:In this review, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of porous organic polymers (POPs)‐based nanofibers and their derivatives. The coverage includes synthesis, preparation methodologies, and emerging applications, offering the first exhaustive examination of various nanofibrous POPs, their composite materials, and derived carbon materials. Additionally, the authors delve into the diverse applications, challenges, and future perspectives of these nanofibers. Engineering porous organic polymers (POPs) into 1D morphology holds significant promise for diverse applications due to their exceptional processability and increased surface contact for enhanced interactions with guest molecules. This article reviews the latest developments in nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives, encompassing porous organic polymer nanofibers, their composites, and POPs‐derived carbon nanofibers. The review delves into the design and fabrication strategies, elucidates the formation mechanisms, explores their functional attributes, and highlights promising applications. The first section systematically outlines two primary fabrication approaches of nanofibrous POPs, i.e., direct bulk synthesis and electrospinning technology. Both routes are discussed and compared in terms of template utilization and post‐treatments. Next, performance of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are reviewed for applications including water treatment, water/oil separation, gas adsorption, energy storage, heterogeneous catalysis, microwave absorption, and biomedical systems. Finally, highlighting existent challenges and offering future prospects of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are concluded.

Abstract:Terminology is pivotal for facilitating clear communication and minimizing ambiguity, especially in specialized fields such as chemistry. In materials science, a subset of chemistry, the term "pore" is traditionally linked to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature, which categorizes pores into "micro", "meso", and "macro" based on size. However, applying this terminology in closely-related areas, such as 3D bioprinting, often leads to confusion owing to the lack of consensus on specific definitions and classifications tailored to each field. This review article critically examines the current use of pore terminology in the context of 3D bioprinting, highlighting the need for reassessment to avoid potential misunderstandings. We propose an alternative classification that aligns more closely with the specific requirements of bioprinting, suggesting a tentative size-based division of interconnected pores into 'parvo'-(d < 25 μm), 'medio'-(25 < d 100 μm) pores, relying on the current understanding of the pore size role in tissue formation. The introduction of field-specific terminology for pore sizes in 3D bioprinting is essential to enhance the clarity and precision of research communication. This represents a step toward a more cohesive and specialized lexicon that aligns with the unique aspects of bioprinting and tissue engineering.

Pore-geometry recognition: on the importance of quantifying similarity in nanoporous materials

Abstract:In most applications of nanoporous materials the pore structure is as important as the chemical composition as a determinant of performance. For example, one can alter performance in applications like carbon capture or methane storage by orders of magnitude by only modifying the pore structure (1,2). For these applications it is therefore important to identify the optimal pore geometry and use this information to find similar materials. However, the mathematical language and tools to identify materials with similar pore structures, but different composition, has been lacking. Here we develop a pore recognition approach to quantify similarity of pore structures and classify them using topological data analysis (3,4). Our approach allows us to identify materials with similar pore geometries, and to screen for materials that are similar to given top-performing structures. Using methane storage as a case study, we also show that materials can be divided into topologically distinct classes -- and that each class requires different optimization strategies. In this work we have focused on pore space, but our topological approach can be generalised to quantify similarity of any geometric object, which, given the many different Materials Genomics initiatives (5,6), opens many interesting avenues for big-data science.

Abstract:Novel types of microporous material are required for chemoselective adsorptions, separations and heterogeneous catalysis. This concept article describes recent research directed towards the synthesis of polymeric materials that possess microporosity that is intrinsic to their molecular structures. These polymers (PIMs) can exhibit analogous behaviour to that of conventional microporous materials, but, in addition, may be processed into convenient forms for use as membranes. The excellent performance of these membranes for gas separation and pervaporation illustrates the unique character of PIMs and suggests immediate technological applications.

Abstract:Nanoscale functionalization for polymers is crucial to further understand essential correlation between polymer chain structure and macroscopic properties, which direct influence capability and trend to functionalize polymer materials. It is urgently required to further investigate physics and chemistry of the micro-process. Since 2000, we have been focused on polymer composites micro-processing and physics and chemistry therein. Two representative macroscopic morphologies are mainly concerned ： complex composite particles and nanoporous composite membrane. We have developed new template synthesis approaches to precisely control their macroscopic morphologies, meanwhile to assist a favorable growth and spatial distribution of desired components with soft matter （polymer gels or block copolymers） by specific interactions. The physics and chemistry during the micro-process has been elucidated.

Abstract:Porous polymeric membranes have shown great potential in biological and biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, bioseparation, and biosensing, due to their structural flexibility, versatile surface chemistry, and biocompatibility. This review outlines the advantages and limitations of the fabrication techniques commonly used to produce porous polymeric membranes, with especial focus on those featuring nano/submicron scale pores, which include track etching, nanoimprinting, block-copolymer self-assembly, and electrospinning. Recent advances in membrane technology have been key to facilitate precise control of pore size, shape, density and surface properties. The review provides a critical overview of the main biological and biomedical applications of these porous polymeric membranes, especially focusing on drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and bioseparation. The effect of the membrane material and pore morphology on the role of the membranes for each specific application as well as the specific fabrication challenges, and future prospects of these membranes are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:A t the microand nanoscale, pores represent a highly distinctive feature, and materials containing pores are referred to as porous materials. The pore structure imparts materials with a high specific surface area, enhances mass transfer efficiency, and alters the interfacial interactions between the material host and its surrounding environment, thereby bringing about significant changes in material performances. To date, porous materials represented by mesoporous materials and metal-/covalentorganic frameworks (MOF/COF) have made outstanding contributions to the development of numerous fields. Due to the significance of porous materials, the engineering and application of pores have always been a research area of great importance. This virtual issue of ACS Central Science highlights the latest research on porous materials published in this journal recently. We have selected 18 representative research achievements and provide a brief introduction of their work and porous materials. Porous materials can be classified into microporous, mesoporous, and macroporous materials based on pore size, and their synthesis methods include self-templating, softtemplating, hard-templating, and so on. The key scientific issues in current porous materials research can be divided into two categories: (1) engineering of pore structures; (2) investigation of the relationship between pore structures and material properties. Different synthesis methods involve different ways of constructing pore structures, which can result in distinct properties. The articles selected for this virtual issue have made outstanding contributions and breakthroughs in these two areas. Brief introductions for each of the 18 articles in this virtual issue are presented below. These articles are categorized based on the challenges they address: construction of microporous frameworks, synergistic assembly of mesopore channels, templating methods for macropore formation, the influence of pore structures on mass transfer, and the influence of pore structures on catalytic performance.
Macro-porous ceramics: processing and properties

Abstract:Porous ceramics are now expected to be used for a wide variety of industrial applications from filtration, absorption, catalysts and catalyst supports to lightweight structural components. During the last decade, tremendous efforts have been devoted for the researches on innovative processing technologies of porous ceramics, resulting in better control of the porous structures and substantial improvements of the properties. This article intends to review these recent progresses of porous ceramics. Because of a vast amount of research works reported in this field these days, the review mainly focuses on macro-porous ceramics whose pore size is larger than 50 nm. Followed by giving a general classification of porous ceramics, a number of innovative processing routes developed for critical control of pores are described, along with some important properties. The processes are divided into four categories including (i) partial sintering, (ii) sacrificial fugitives, (iii) replica templates and (iv) direct foaming. The partial sintering, the most conventional technique for making porous ceramics, has been substantially sophisticated in recent years. Very homogeneous porous ceramics with extremely narrow size distribution have been successfully prepared through sintering combined with in situ chemical synthesis. Carefully tailored micro-structure (size, morphology and orientation of grains and pores, etc.) of porous ceramics has led to unique mechanical properties, which cannot be attained even in the dense materials. Various types of the sacrificial fugitives have been examined for obtaining well-tuned shape and size of pores. The freeze-drying techniques using water or liquid as fugitive materials have been most frequently studied in recent years. Controlling growth of ice during freezing has led to unique porous structures and excellent performances of porous ceramics, e.g. excellent mechanical behaviour for highly porous lamellar hydroxyl-apatite scaffolds. Numerous approaches on the replica templates have been developed in order to produce highly porous ceramics having interconnected large pores and sufficiently strong struts without cracks. Natural template approaches using wood, for example, as positive replica, have been intensively studied in these years and have realised highly oriented porous open-porous structure with a wide range of porosity. As for the direct foaming technique, a variety of novel techniques which stabilise the bubbles in ceramic suspension have been developed to suppress large pore formation, e.g. evaporation of emulsified alkane droplets and use of surface-modified particles. We also briefly review porous ceramics with hierarchical porosity (incorporation of macro-, meso- and micro-pores), which have attracted much attention in both academic and industrial fields. Finally the article gives the summary and discusses the issues to be solved for further activating the potential of porous ceramics and for expanding their applicability.

Abstract:A broad range of scientific and technological problems involves multi-scales and complex systems. This paper reviews some of unique and interesting nano-scale phenomena and applications relevant to polymer processing. It addresses four subjects. The first one is concerned with the dynamics of polymer chains in confined geometries. In contrary to intuition one may have, polymer chains may diffuse much faster in confined geometries than in the bulk. The second subject deals with extruder processing of polymer nanocomposites. Understanding of the dynamics of polymer chains in confined geometries helps shade light on how nanoparticles may be dispersed in polymer matrices in a nanometer scale. The third one is on the use of nano-objects as nano-reactors. An example is given to show how one may take the advantage of nano-reactors to improve reaction yield and/or reaction selectivity. The last subject deals with reaction kinetics at polymer–polymer interfaces of a few nanometers in thickness, a very important issue in reactive polymer blending processes.

Abstract:Reactive polymers play many roles, from supports for solid-phase synthesis or catalysis to media for separations. Although macroporous polymer beads that provide high reactive capacities and excellent solvent tolerance are well established, approaches to monosized beads with optimized pore structures or multiple chemistries segregated within pores of different sizes have expanded their realm of application. Polymer monoliths containing intricate pore networks can be obtained in any desired shape by a simple molding process and provide unique advantages such as fast kinetics, high reactivity, and high throughput. Applications ranging from immobilized enzyme reactors to fast media for the separation of synthetic or biopolymers are presented.

Abstract:Various methods for morphological, textural, and structural characterization of polymeric, carbon, and oxide adsorbents have been developed and well described. However, there are ways to improve the quantitative information extraction from experimental data for describing complex sorbents and polymer fillers. This could be based not only on probe adsorption and electron microscopies (TEM, SEM) but also on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), cryoporometry, relaxometry, thermoporometry, quasi-elastic light scattering, Raman and infrared spectroscopies, and other methods. To effectively extract information on complex materials, it is important to use appropriate methods to treat the data with adequate physicomathematical models that accurately describe the dependences of these data on pressure, concentration, temperature, and other parameters, and effective computational programs. It is shown that maximum accurate characterization of complex materials is possible if several complemented methods are used in parallel, e.g., adsorption and SAXS with self-consistent regularization procedures (giving pore size (PSD), pore wall thickness (PWTD) or chord length (CLD), and particle size (PaSD) distribution functions, the specific surface area of open and closed pores, etc.), TEM/SEM images with quantitative treatments (giving the PaSD, PSD, and PWTD functions), as well as cryo- and thermoporometry, relaxometry, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopies (giving information on the behavior of the materials under different conditions).
