Abstract:Membrane separation technology plays a pivotal role in modern industry and scientific research. The key to developing and improving membrane separation processes lies in designing and fabricating customized porous membranes with specific physical parameters, including pore diameter, porosity, pore size distribution, pore length (membrane thickness), pore geometry, and pore connectivity. Polymeric porous membranes with vertically‐penetrative‐pores (PPMVs) represent a distinct category among the available membranes due to their unique characteristics such as short transport path, small trans‐membrane resistance, and simple pore geometry, as compared to other porous membranes with sponge‐like channels. In practical applications, PPMVs offer several advantages, including achieving higher flux rates, facilitating easier unidirectional transport, and enabling harmless biological extraction. Moreover, PPMVs can serve as ideal model systems for theoretical investigations on the fundamental mechanisms of separation and transport in academic research. With substantial advancements in fabrication technologies and application fields of PPMVs in recent years, it warrants a comprehensive perspective. In this mini‐review, we provide an overview of widely used fabrication methods for PPMVs, discuss their primary applications, and address the existing challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:The development of porous polymeric membranes is an important area of application in separation technology. This article summarizes the development of porous polymers from the perspectives of materials and methods for membrane production. Polymers such as polyethylene, polydimethylsiloxane, polypropylene, polyimide, and polytetrafluoroethylene are reviewed due to their outstanding thermal stability, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and low cost. Six different methods for membrane fabrication are critically reviewed, including thermally induced phase separation, melt-spinning and cold-stretching, phase separation micromolding, imprinting/soft molding, manual punching, and three-dimensional printing. Each method is described in details related to the strategy used to produce the porous polymeric membranes with a specific morphology and separation performances. The key factors associated with each method are presented, including solvent/non-solvent system type and composition, polymer solution composition and concentration, processing parameters, and ambient conditions. Current challenges are also described, leading to future development and innovation to improve these membranes in terms of materials, fabrication equipment, and possible modifications.

Abstract:Extensive employment of biomaterials in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications is considered to be of prime importance. As expected, oil based polymer materials were gradually replaced by natural or synthetic biopolymers due to their well-known intrinsic characteristics such as biodegradability, non-toxicity and biocompatibility. Literature on this subject was found to be expanding, especially in the areas of biomedical and microbiological applications. Introduction of porosity into a biomaterial broadens the scope of applications. In addition, increased porosity can have a beneficial effect for the applications which exploit their exceptional ability of loading, retaining and releasing of fluids. Different applications require a unique set of pore characteristics in the biopolymer matrix. Various pore morphologies have different characteristics and contribute different performances to the biopolymer matrix. Fabrication methods for bio-based porous materials more related to the choice of material. By choosing the appropriate combination of fabrication technique and biomaterial employment, one can obtain tunable pore characteristic to fulfill the requirements of desired application. In our previous review, we described the literature related to biopolymers and fabrication techniques of porous materials. This paper we will focus on the biomedical and microbiological applications of bio-based porous materials.

Abstract:Porous membrane technology has garnered significant attention in the fields of separation and biology due to its remarkable contributions to green chemistry and sustainable development. The porous membranes fabricated from polylactic acid (PLA) possess numerous advantages, including a low relative density, a high specific surface area, biodegradability, and excellent biocompatibility. As a result, they exhibit promising prospects for various applications, such as oil–water separation, tissue engineering, and drug release. This paper provides an overview of recent research advancements in the fabrication of PLA membranes using electrospinning, the breath-figure method, and the phase separation method. Firstly, the principles of each method are elucidated from the perspective of pore formation. The correlation between the relevant parameters and pore structure is discussed and summarized, subsequently followed by a comparative analysis of the advantages and limitations of each method. Subsequently, this article presents the diverse applications of porous PLA membranes in tissue engineering, oil–water separation, and other fields. The current challenges faced by these membranes, however, encompass inadequate mechanical strength, limited production efficiency, and the complexity of pore structure control. Suggestions for enhancement, as well as future prospects, are provided accordingly.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:With the development of the nano-fabrication and nanofluidics, nanoporous membranes have shown great potential in applications such as molecular separation, energy conversion, and molecular sensing. Abstract:<p>Porous membrane materials at the micro/nanoscale have exhibited practical and potential value for extensive biological and medical applications associated with filtration and isolation, cell separation and sorting, micro‐arrangement, in‐vitro tissue reconstruction, high‐throughput manipulation and analysis, and real‐time sensing. Herein, an overview of technological development of micro/nanoporous membranes (M/N‐PMs) is provided. Various membrane types and the progress documented in membrane fabrication techniques, including the electrochemical‐etching, laser‐based technology, microcontact printing, electron beam lithography, imprinting, capillary force lithography, spin coating, and microfluidic molding are described. Their key features, achievements, and limitations associated with micro/nanoporous membrane (M/N‐PM) preparation are discussed. The recently popularized applications of M/N‐PMs in biomedical engineering involving the separation of cells and biomolecules, bioparticle operations, biomimicking, micropatterning, bioassay, and biosensing are explored too. Finally, the challenges that need to be overcome for M/N‐PM fabrication and future applications are highlighted.</p>

Abstract:A cell membrane is a flexible lipid bilayer with sophisticated functions which dominate the exchange of material, energy and information between the outside and the inside of the cell. In order to understand and imitate these structures and functions, scientists had already developed a variety of mimic membranes which are alike in form based on lipid bilayer and organic channel-molecules. With the rise of nanotechnology, a large number of synthetic nano-devices are widely used to construct porous biomimetic membranes which are alike in spirit instead of the conventional lipid bilayer membranes. This perspective will first introduce several typical methods to fabricate porous biomimetic membranes, and then discuss the "smart" properties and future applications of these membranes in materials transport, energy transformation and signal transduction aspects.

Abstract:Design elements extracted from biological ion channels guide the engineering of artificial nanofluidic membranes for efficient ionic transport and spawn biomimetic devices with great potential in many cutting-edge areas. In this context, polymeric nanofluidic membranes can be especially attractive because of their inherent flexibility and benign processability, which facilitate massive fabrication and facile device integration for large-scale applications. Herein, the state-of-the-art achievements of polymeric nanofluidic membranes are systematically summarized. Theoretical fundamentals underlying both biological and synthetic ion channels are introduced. The advances of engineering polymeric nanofluidic membranes are then detailed from aspects of structural design, material construction, and chemical functionalization, emphasizing their broad chemical and reticular/topological variety as well as considerable property tunability. After that, this Review expands on examples of evolving these polymeric membranes into macroscopic devices and their potentials in addressing compelling issues in energy conversion and storage systems where efficient ion transport is highly desirable. Finally, a brief outlook on possible future developments in this field is provided.

Abstract:Biopolymers and their applications have been widely studied in recent years. Replacing the oil based polymer materials with biopolymers in a sustainable manner might give not only a competitive advantage but, in addition, they possess unique properties which cannot be emulated by conventional polymers. This review covers the fabrication of porous materials from natural biopolymers (cellulose, chitosan, collagen), synthetic biopolymers (poly(lactic acid), poly(lactic-<i>co</i>-glycolic acid)) and their composite materials. Properties of biopolymers strongly depend on the polymer structure and are of great importance when fabricating the polymer into intended applications. Biopolymers find a large spectrum of application in the medical field. Other fields such as packaging, technical, environmental, agricultural and food are also gaining importance. The introduction of porosity into a biomaterial broadens the scope of applications. There are many techniques used to fabricate porous polymers. Fabrication methods, including the basic and conventional techniques to the more recent ones, are reviewed. Advantages and limitations of each method are discussed in detail. Special emphasis is placed on the pore characteristics of biomaterials used for various applications. This review can aid in furthering our understanding of the fabrication methods and about controlling the porosity and microarchitecture of porous biopolymer materials.

Abstract:The design of advanced functional materials with nanometer- and micrometer-scale control over their properties is of considerable interest for both fundamental and applied studies because of the many potential applications for these materials in the fields of biomedical materials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The layer-by-layer deposition technique introduced in the early 1990s by Decher, Moehwald, and Lvov is a versatile technique, which has attracted an increasing number of researchers in recent years due to its wide range of advantages for biomedical applications: ease of preparation under "mild" conditions compatible with physiological media, capability of incorporating bioactive molecules, extra cellular matrix components and biopolymers in the films, tunable mechanical properties, and spatio-temporal control over film organization. The last few years have seen a significant increase in reports exploring the possibilities offered by diffusing molecules into films to control their internal structures or design "reservoirs", as well as control their mechanical properties. Such properties, associated with the chemical properties of films, are particularly important for designing biomedical devices that contain bioactive molecules. In this review, we highlight recent work on designing and controlling film properties at the nanometer and micrometer scales with a view to developing new biomaterial coatings, tissue engineered constructs that could mimic in vivo cellular microenvironments, and stem cell "niches".

Abstract:Polymersomes are vesicular nanostructures enclosed by a bilayer-membrane self-assembled from amphiphilic block copolymers, which exhibit higher stability compared with their biological analogues (e.g. liposomes). Due to their versatility, polymersomes have found various applications in different research fields such as drug delivery, nanomedicine, biological nanoreactors, and artificial cells. However, polymersomes prepared with high molecular weight components typically display low permeability to molecules and ions. It hence remains a major challenge to balance the opposing features of robustness and permeability of polymersomes. In this review, we will focus on the design and strategies for fabricating permeable polymersomes, including polymersomes with intrinsic permeability, the formation of nanopores in the membrane bilayers by protein insertion, and the construction of stimuli-responsive polymersomes. Then, we will highlight the applications of permeable polymersomes in the fields of biomimetic nanoreactors, artificial cells and organelles, and nanomedicine, to underline the challenges in the development of polymersomes as soft matter with biomedical utilities.

Abstract:This review explores significant advancements in polymer science and fabrication processes that have enhanced the performance and broadened the application scope of microfluidic devices. Microfluidics, essential in biotechnology, medicine, and chemical engineering, relies on precise fluid manipulation in micrometer-sized channels. Recent innovations in polymer materials, such as flexible, biocompatible, and structurally robust polymers, have been pivotal in developing advanced microfluidic systems. Techniques like replica molding, microcontact printing, solvent-assisted molding, injection molding, and 3D printing are examined, highlighting their advantages and recent developments. Additionally, the review discusses the diverse applications of polymer-based microfluidic devices in biomedical diagnostics, drug delivery, organ-on-chip models, environmental monitoring, and industrial processes. This paper also addresses future challenges, including enhancing chemical resistance, achieving multifunctionality, ensuring biocompatibility, and scaling up production. By overcoming these challenges, the potential for widespread adoption and impactful use of polymer-based microfluidic technologies can be realized.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple, cost-effective, flexible, and feasible continuous micro-nano polymer fiber preparation technology that has attracted extensive scientific and industrial interest over the past few decades, owing to its versatility and ability to manufacture highly tunable nanofiber networks. Nanofiber membrane materials prepared using electrospinning have excellent properties suitable for biomedical applications, such as a high specific surface area, strong plasticity, and the ability to manipulate their nanofiber components to obtain the desired properties and functions. With the increasing popularity of nanomaterials in this century, electrospun nanofiber membranes are gradually becoming widely used in various medical fields. Here, the research progress of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials is reviewed, including the basic electrospinning process and the development of the materials as well as their biomedical applications. The main purpose of this review is to discuss the latest research progress on electrospun nanofiber membrane materials and the various new electrospinning technologies that have emerged in recent years for various applications in the medical field. The application of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials in recent years in tissue engineering, wound dressing, cancer diagnosis and treatment, medical protective equipment, and other fields is the main topic of discussion in this review. Finally, the development of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials in the biomedical field is systematically summarized and prospects are discussed. In general, electrospinning has profound prospects in biomedical applications, as it is a practical and flexible technology used for the fabrication of microfibers and nanofibers.

Abstract:Polymer fabrication (electrospinning, phase inversion), chemical designs (copolymerization, cross‐linking, functionalization), and their biomedical applications in diagnostics, regenerative medicine, and drug delivery. Polymer structures are essential in biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to form intricate structures on micro‐ to nanometer scales. This review, emphasizing electrospinning and phase inversion techniques, examines the fabrication strategies and chemical design of polymer structures for biomedical use. Electrospinning, particularly needleless electrospinning, produces nanofibres with high porosity and flexibility and is widely applied in tissue engineering and drug delivery. Phase inversion, including thermal, nonsolvent‐, vapor‐ and evaporation‐induced phase separation, allows precise control over polymer properties but faces challenges in terms of cooling rates and solvent characteristics. Chemical design through doping, functionalization, cross‐linking and copolymerization enhances the biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical properties of polymers, facilitating advanced applications in drug delivery, tissue scaffolding and biosensors. Advanced functional polymers are revolutionizing biomedical fields, offering innovative solutions for therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection, diagnostics, and regenerative medicine. Despite remarkable progress, challenges, such as scalability, cost‐effectiveness, and environmental impact, persist. This review underscores the transformative potential of advanced polymer materials in medical treatments and advocates for continuous research and interdisciplinary collaboration to overcome existing challenges and fully exploit the capabilities of these materials in improving patient care and medical outcomes. Future perspectives highlight enhancing precision control mechanisms, integrating phase inversion with other techniques and developing large‐scale production methods to advance the field further.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes occupy a crucial position in membrane technology due to their superiority of high separation efficiency and low energy cost, which are therefore widely applied in the field of water treatment, food and medicine, membrane bioreactor and petro chemistry. Most nanofiltration membranes are made from polymeric materials with composite structure containing a thin selective layer and a porous support layer. As the key of this structure, the selective layer can be fabricated via various methods such as interfacial polymerization, layer-by-layer assembly, surface coating and graft polymerization followed with crosslinking. However, it still remains a big challenge to precisely control the skin layer structures during interfacial polymerization process ascribed to its very fast reaction. We demonstrate that the interfacial property and the interfacial reactions can be well tuned via controlled surface/interface engineering, thus to control the fabrication and performance of the composite nanofiltration membranes. This review is aimed to summarize the most recent advances on polymeric composite nanofiltration membranes based on controlled surface/interface engineering mainly conducted in our group. On one hand, a tunable polymerization-deposition strategy is proposed to realize novel or functional selective layer. In these cases, dopamine and derivative polyphenol are employed to fabricate the selective layer with self-polymerization and deposition process tuned by additives, oxidant and contra-diffusion operation. Novel nanofiltration membranes with photocatalytic function are further achieved owing to the reactive moieties in the co-deposition layer. On the other hand, an interfacial property tailoring interfacial polymerization strategy is proved to obtain ultrathin and high-performance nanofiltration membranes. An intermediate layer is fabricated prior to traditional interfacial polymerization with excellent hydrophilicity and uniform structure, which help to homogenize the monomer concentration on substrate surface and control the release of monomers to achieve ultrathin polyamide layer. We believe that these advances will provide reliable methodological and theoretical foundation for the controllable fabrication of high performance composite nanofiltration membranes. Moreover, the challenges remained in this area are also presented, such as details of chemical reactions, reaction-structure-function relationship, optimization of methodology and development of basic theory, to point out the future research direction with the aim to push forward the studies in this area.

Abstract:Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes have attracted much attention due to a variety of excellent characteristics, which include thermal stability and tolerance to most solvents, atmosphere, bacteria and photo irradiation. Therefore, their exploitation also covers many fields, like pervaporation, water treatment, enzyme immobilization, and hemodialysis. However, the relative poor hydrophilicity and biocompatibility get the membranes susceptible to protein adsorption and cell adhesion that may cause biofouling and immunoreactions, especially when the membranes are used in blood-related systems. This review presents various surface engineerings for PAN-based membranes, which mainly refers to grafting polymerization (also known as “grafting-from” method), partially hydrolysis, macromolecule immobilization (also known as “grafting-to” method), and enzyme immobilization. To render the membrane surface with biocompatibility for hemodialysis, the concept of mimicking the outer surface of cells is critical. For example, biomacromolecules such as chitosan, heparin or insulin can be tethered on the PAN-based membranes to improve their surface hemocompatibility remarkably. In addition, one of the potential applications of PAN-based membranes is as enzyme immobilization supports. Over 15 relative literatures are listed and briefly discussed with different enzymes, modified supports, and coupling methods. However, the application trial for these enzyme-immobilized membranes is still elementary.

The research highlights the potential of these membranes for biofiltration, tissue engineering, and drug delivery, promising advancements in biomedical applications. Polymer porous membranes are crucial in various applications, including water filtration, tissue engineering, and drug administration. Conventional far‐field electrospinning (FFES) is widely used for producing polymeric membranes due to its cost‐effectiveness, scalability, and flexibility in using many polymers. However, FFES has limitations in controlling pore form and size, as it produces randomly oriented fibers that lead to inconsistent and noncustomizable pore sizes. To address these limitations, this work combines near‐field electrospinning (NFES) with thermal treatment of polymer fibers and membranes. NFES offers more precise control over fiber placement and alignment, producing well‐defined fiber patterns with consistent and customizable pore sizes without compromising the thickness of membranes. By exploring the interplay between polymer behavior, thermal effects, and capillary action, the differences in pore area under various temperatures and fiber spacings are characterized. Additionally, this study investigates the influence of multilayer infusion on pore size and geometric arrangement by examining multilayer configurations stacked at various angles. The results indicate that increasing the number of layers leads to decreased pore size, while the alignment of infused fibers affects pore shape. This integrated approach enhances control over membrane characteristics, improving the performance and consistency of polymer porous membrane fabrication across various applications.

Abstract:In recent years, surface patterning of membranes has been explored as a new strategy to modify surface properties of polymeric membranes. A variety of methods including template-based micromolding and direct printing have been developed for effective fabrication of surface-patterned membranes. In this review, we compare the underlying pattern replication mechanisms and the advantages and challenges associated with the range of different fabrication methods. The presence of the surface patterns, when properly created, can enlarge the active surface/interfacial area, create more effective conduction pathways, and enhance the hydrodynamic effects. These effects can be harnessed for improving membrane performance for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:This work presents methods of obtaining polymeric hollow-fiber membranes produced via the dry–wet phase inversion method that were published in renowned specialized membrane publications in the years 2010–2020. Obtaining hollow-fiber membranes, unlike flat membranes, requires the use of a special installation for their production, the most important component of which is the hollow fiber forming spinneret. This method is most often used in obtaining membranes made of polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyurethane, cellulose acetate, and its derivatives. Many factors affect the properties of the membranes obtained. By changing the parameters of the spinning process, we change the thickness of the membranes' walls and the diameter of the hollow fibers, which causes changes in the membranes' structure and, as a consequence, changes in their transport/separation parameters. The type of bore fluid affects the porosity of the inner epidermal layer or causes its atrophy. Porogenic compounds such as polyvinylpyrrolidones and polyethylene glycols and other substances that additionally increase the membrane porosity are often added to the polymer solution. Another example is a blend of two- or multi-component membranes and dual-layer membranes that are obtained using a three-nozzle spinneret. In dual-layer membranes, one layer is the membrane scaffolding, and the other is the separation layer. Also, the temperature during the process, the humidity, and the composition of the solution in the coagulating bath have impact on the parameters of the membranes obtained.
