Abstract:Hole-transport-layer (HTL)-free, carbon-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting a great interest owing to a low cost and an advanced stability in ambient environment. However, the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) for this kind of PSCs was far lower than expected. Interface engineering is a promising method to enhance PSCs efficiency through improving the interface charge transfer. In our work, we introduce a simple, clean interfacial engineering method of deionized water (DI) spin-coating to treat the F-doped SnO2 (FTO). And then ZnO was spin-coated on the treated FTO. A compact and highly uniform ZnO film was obtained. Excess CsBr was added into CsPbI3 precursor solution to obtain stable black phase CsPbI3 at a low temperature (120 °C). HTL-free, carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbI3−xBrx (x < 1) perovskite solar cells are fabricated with the structure of FTO/DI/ZnO/CsPbI3−xBrx (x < 1)/C. After DI treatment, the defect density of device is greatly decreased so that carriers transport at the interface is accelerated and the charge recombination is effectively suppressed. The champion PCE has been improved from 10.95 to 12.39%, obtaining an improved PCE about 13%, which is the highest PCE for HTL-free, carbon-based all-inorganic PSCs until now.

Abstract:Lead halide‐based perovskites solar cells (PSCs) are intriguing candidates for photovoltaic technology due to their high efficiency, low cost, and simple fabrication processes. Currently, PSCs with efficiencies of >25% are mainly based on methylammonium (MA)‐free and bromide (Br) free, formamide lead iodide (FAPbI3)‐based perovskites, because MA is thermally unstable due to its volatile nature and Br incorporation will induce blue shift in the absorption spectrum. Therefore, MA‐free, Br‐free formamidine‐based perovskites are drawing huge research attention in recent years. The hole transporting layer (HTL) is crucial in fabricating highly efficient and stable inverted p‐i‐n structured PSCs by enhancing charge extraction, lowering interfacial recombination, and altering band alignment, etc. Here, this work employs a NiOx/PTAA bi‐layer HTL combined with GuHCl (guanidinium hydrochloride) additive engineering and PEAI (phenylethylammonium iodide) passivation strategy to optimize the charge carrier dynamics and tune defects chemistry in the MA‐free, Br‐free RbCsFAPbI3‐based perovskite absorber, which boosts the device efficiency up to 22.78%. Additionally, the device retains 95% of its initial performance under continuous 1 sun equivalent LED light illumination at 45 °C for up to 500 h.
High-Performance Inverted Planar Perovskite Solar Cells Enhanced by Thickness Tuning of New Dopant-Free Hole Transporting Layer

Abstract:A new hole transporting material (HTM) named DMZ is synthesized and employed as a dopant-free HTM in inverted planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Systematic studies demonstrate that the thickness of the hole transporting layer can effectively enhance the morphology and crystallinity of the perovskite layer, leading to low series resistance and less defects in the crystal. As a result, the champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.61% with JSC = 22.62 mA cm-2 , VOC = 1.02 V, and FF = 81.05% (an average one is 17.62%) is achieved with a thickness of ≈13 nm of DMZ (2 mg mL-1 ) under standard global AM 1.5 illumination, which is ≈1.5 times higher than that of devices based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS). More importantly, the devices based on DMZ exhibit a much better stability (90% of maximum PCE retained after more than 556 h in air (relative humidity ≈ 45%-50%) without any encapsulation) than that of devices based on PEDOT:PSS (only 36% of initial PCE retained after 77 h in same conditions). Therefore, the cost-effective and facile material named DMZ offers an appealing alternative to PEDOT:PSS or polytriarylamine for highly efficient and stable inverted planar PSCs.

Abstract:Inverted (p‐i‐n) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are advantageous in terms of easy fabrication, low‐temperature processibility, negligible hysteresis and excellent compatibility with the tandem devices in comparison with the regular (n‐i‐p) counterparts. Hole‐blocking layer is crucial for efficient electron transport of inverted PSCs, and only a single hole‐blocking layer of bathocuproine (BCP) is used typically. Herein, bis[2‐(diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether oxide (DPEPO) with a deep HOMO energy level is incorporated atop of perovskite film as an auxiliary hole‐blocking layer, resulting in enhanced electron transport of inverted PSC devices. The P=O group within DPEPO can coordinate with Pb2+ cations of perovskite, leading to passivation of surface defects of perovskite. Besides, incorporation of DPEPO hole‐blocking layer prohibits undesired hole transport from perovskite to PCBM electron transport layer, thus suppressing non‐radiative electron‐hole recombination. As a result, combined with BCP hole‐blocking layer, inverted PSC devices based on double hole‐blocking layers exhibit a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.17% with a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.15 V which dramatically surpasses that based on single hole‐blocking layer (22.26%). Moreover, incorporation of hydrophobic DPEPO helps to improve the ambient and thermal stabilities of inverted PSC devices. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The hole transport material (HTM) free carbon based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) are promising for its manufactural simplicity, but they currently suffer from low power conversion efficiencies (PCE) largely because of the voltage loss. Here, a new strategy to increase the PCE by incorporating an ultrathin ferroelectric oxide PbTiO3 layer between the electron transport material and the halide perovskite is reported. The resulting C-PSCs have achieved PCEs up to 16.37%, which is the highest record for HTM-free C-PSCs to date, mainly ascribable to the ferroelectric layer enhanced open circuit voltage. Detail measurements and analysis show an enhanced built-in potential in the C-PSCs as well as suppression of the non-radiative recombination due to the ferroelectric PbTiO3 layer incorporation, accounting for the boosted V-OC and photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:The interface and crystallinity of perovskite films play a decisive role in determining the device performance, which is significantly influenced by the bottom hole‐transporting material (HTM) of inverted perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Herein, this work reports a simple design strategy of polymer HTMs, which can modulate the wettability and promote the anchoring by introducing pyridine units into the polyarylamine backbone, so as to realize efficient and stable inverted PVSCs. The HTM properties can be effectively modified by varying the linkage sites of pyridine units, and 3,5‐linked PTAA‐P1 particularly demonstrates a more regulated molecular configuration for interacting with perovskites, leading to highly crystalline perovskite films with uniform back contact and reduced defect density. Dopant‐free PTAA‐P1‐based inverted PVSCs have realized remarkable efficiencies of 24.89% (certified value: 24.50%) for small‐area (0.08 cm2) as well as 23.12% for large‐area (1 cm2) devices. Moreover, the unencapsulated device maintained over 93% of its initial efficiency after 800 hours of maximum power point tracking under simulated AM 1.5G illumination. Abstract:Currently, there are only very few dopant‐free polymer hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) that can enable perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) to demonstrate a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of greater than 20%. To address this need, a simple and efficient way is developed to synthesize novel crossconjugated polymers as high performance dopant‐free HTMs to endow PVSCs with a high PCE of 21.3%, which is among the highest values reported for single‐junction inverted PVSCs. More importantly, rational understanding of the reasons why two isomeric polymer HTMs (PPE1 and PPE2 ) with almost identical photophysical properties, hole‐transporting ability, and surface wettability deliver so distinctly different device performance under similar device fabrication conditions is manifested. PPE2 is found to improve the quality of perovskite films cast on top with larger grain sizes and more oriented crystallization. These results help unveil the new HTM design rules to influence the perovskite growth/crystallization for improving the performance of inverted PVSCs.

Abstract:Most of the high performance in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have only been achieved with two organic hole transporting materials: 2,2′,7,7′‐tetrakis(N,N‐di‐p‐methoxyphenylamine)‐9,9‐spirobifluorene (Spiro‐OMeTAD) and poly(triarylamine) (PTAA), but their high cost and low stability caused by the hygroscopic dopant greatly hinder the commercialization of PSCs. One effective alternative to address this problem is to utilize inexpensive inorganic hole transporting layer (i‐HTL), but obtaining high efficiency via i‐HTLs has remained a challenge. Herein, a well‐designed inorganic–organic double HTL is constructed by introducing an ultrathin polymer layer dithiophene‐benzene (DTB) between CuSCN and Au contact. This strategy not only enhances the hole extraction efficiency through the formation of cascaded energy levels, but also prevents the degradation of CuSCN caused by the reaction between CuSCN and Au electrode. Furthermore, the CuSCN layer also promotes the formation of a pinhole‐free and compact DTB over layer in the CuSCN/DTB structure. Consequently, the PSCs fabricated with this CuSCN/DTB layer achieves the power conversion efficiency of 22.0% (certified: 21.7%), which is among the top efficiencies for PSCs based on dopant‐free HTLs. Moreover, the fabricated PSCs exhibit high light stability under more than 1000 h of light illumination and excellent environmental stability at high temperature (85 °C) or high relative humidity (>60% RH).

Abstract:The past five years have witnessed the significant breakthrough of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). High certificated power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.1% was achieved in a short time after the inorganic-organic perovskite was firstly used as the light absorber in the solar cells. It is believed that PSCs now become one of the most promising photovoltaic in the new-generation solar cells, which may rival silicon based solar cells. In this article, simplified planar perovskite solar cells without a hole-blocking layer were fabricated by a two-step spin-coating method, and the highest PCE of 15.1% was achieved with an average PCE of 13.6%. Moreover, it is found that the hysteresis effect is reduced in this kind of devices. The research on improved performance for the PSCs with simplified device architecture is very important both for understanding the working mechanism of cells, and for fabricating low-cost and high-performance PSCs to approach commercial applications.
Thermally stable inverted perovskite solar cells using an electropolymerized Zn-porphyrin film as a dopant-free hole-transporting layer

Abstract:Although perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved remarkably high efficiency (25.7%), their long-term stability still needs to be addressed for commercial applications. As an important part of PSCs, the hole-transporting layer (HTL) plays a crucial role in the overall device performance. Zinc porphyrin (ZnP) has excellent thermal/chemical stability, which is beneficial for enhancing the stability of PSCs when it is used as the HTL. In addition, the strong hydrophobicity of the electropolymerized film surface is believed to suppress heterogeneous nucleation and thus improve the quality of the resulting perovskite film. Herein, we have utilized the electropolymerized ZnP (PZnP) to fabricate the dopant-free HTL without annealing. The MAPb(CI 0.05 I 0.95 ) 3 PSCs based on PZnP presented a record-high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.75%, which was significantly improved as compared to the previously reported best result of 16.7% with electropolymerized HTL. The unencapsulated PSCs sustained around 70% of the initial efficiency after thermal aging at 85 °C for 480 h, while the PTAA-based PSCs showed a 78% decrease in the initial PCE under the same conditions. Moreover, the long-term stability of the electropolymerized film-based PSCs was exceptional, retaining about 96% of the initial performance over 5000 h. The electropolymerization strategy provides an effective approach for developing cost-effective dopant-free HTL for thermally stable and efficient PSCs.

Abstract:In this article, an inorganic-organic bilayer hole transport layer (B-HTL) is designed and utilized in planar perovskite solar cells. Here the B-HTL consists of an inorganic VOx matrix and a copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) buffer layer, providing excellent resistance to moisture as well as the alignment of the interfacial energy level. Benefiting from this typical HTL, an enlarged built-in potential and charge extraction can be achieved in PSCs simultaneously. Correspondingly, a champion device with a B-HTL shows a 16.85% efficiency with negligible hysteresis, which is superior to that of a PSC based on a PEDOT:PSS HTL. Meanwhile, significantly prolonged stability of the PSC with the B-HTL can be observed, exhibiting only a 10% efficiency loss after 350 hours in ambient air. Moreover, such an entirely low-temperature (≤60 °C) fabrication process of this typical PSC exhibits its successful application in flexible devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as one of the influential photovoltaic technologies with promising cost-effectiveness. Though with mild processabilities to massive production, inverted PSCs have long suffered from inferior photovoltaic performances due to intractable defective states at boundaries and interfaces. Herein, an in situ passivation (ISP) method is presented to effectively adjust crystal growth kinetics and obtain the well-orientated perovskite films with the passivated boundaries and interfaces, successfully enabled the new access of high-performance inverted PSCs. The study unravels that the strong yet anisotropic ISP additive adsorption between different facets and the accompanied additive engineering yield the high-quality (111)-orientated perovskite crystallites with superior photovoltaic properties. The ISP-derived inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 26.7% (certified as 26.09% at a 5.97 mm2 active area) and 24.5% (certified as 23.53% at a 1.28 cm2 active area), along with decent operational stabilities.
Hole Transport Layer‐Free Low‐Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells for Efficient All‐Perovskite Tandems

Abstract:Low‐bandgap (LBG, Eg∼1.25 eV) tin‐lead (Sn‐Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) play critical roles in constructing efficient all‐perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs) that can surpass the efficiency limit of single‐junction solar cells. However, the traditional poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer (HTL) in LBG PSCs usually restricts device efficiency and stability. Here, we report a strategy of employing 2‐aminoethanesulfonic acid (i.e., taurine) as the interface bridge to fabricate efficient HTL‐free LBG PSCs with improved optoelectronic properties of the perovskite absorbers at the buried contacts. Taurine‐modified ITO substrate has lower optical losses, better energy level alignment, and higher charge transfer capability than PEDOT:PSS HTL, leading to significantly improved open‐circuit voltage (VOC) and short‐circuit current density of corresponding devices. The best‐performing LBG PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.50% and an impressive VOC of 0.911 V has been realized, enabling all‐perovskite TSCs with an efficiency of 26.03%. The taurine‐based HTL‐free TSCs have highly increased stability, retaining more than 90% and 80% of their initial PCEs after constant operation under 1‐sun illumination for 600 h and under 55 °C thermal stress for 950 h, respectively. Abstract:This study reveals a novel method to enhance the bottom interface of inverted perovskite solar cells by forming a 2D perovskite layer between the perovskite and hole transport layer. Using an interlayer of 4M‐PEA‐Cl+MA‐I + PFN‐Br, the approach eliminates voids, improves wettability, and boosts efficiency to 19.1% with perovskite solar cells retaining 91% initial efficiency after 800 h. The bottom perovskite with the hole transport layer (HTL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) interface has received little attention due to challenges like interlayer dissolution during perovskite deposition. And voids at the perovskite/HTL interface can degrade cell performance. This work introduces a two‐dimensional (2D) perovskite layer between the perovskite and poly (N, N′‐bis‐4‐butylphenyl‐N, N′‐bisphenyl) benzidine (Poly‐TPD) HTL using a mixed solution of 4‐methylphenethylammonium chloride (4M‐PEA‐Cl), methylammonium iodide (MA‐I), and Poly(9,9‐bis(3′‐(N,N‐dimethyl)‐N‐ethylammoinium‐propyl‐2,7‐fluorene)‐alt‐2,7‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene))dibromide (PFN‐Br). The amine functional groups in the organic salts improved HTL wettability, resulting in a void‐free interface. 4M‐PEA‐Cl, with its strong electron‐withdrawing benzene ring, outperformed other amine‐containing salts in passivating undercoordinated Pb2+ ions. Incorporating this hybrid passivation layer in PSCs resulted in a 1.8% absolute increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) to 19.1% with 1.68 eV perovskite bandgap. Additionally, the passivated PSCs demonstrated enhanced operational stability, retaining 91% of their initial efficiency after 800 hours of continuous 1‐sun illumination, compared to 84.7% for the control sample.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the long-term stability issues of PSCs remain a significant bottleneck impeding their commercialization. Inverted PSCs with a p-i-n architecture are being actively researched due to their concurrent good stability and decent efficiency. In particular, the PCE of inverted PSCs has improved significantly in recent years and is now almost approaching that of n-i-p PSCs. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of high-efficiency inverted PSCs, including the development of perovskite compositions, fabrication methods, and counter electrode materials (CEMs). Notably, we highlight the development of charge transport materials (CTMs) and the effects of defect passivation strategies on the performance of inverted PSCs. Finally, we discuss the remaining issues and perspectives of high-efficiency inverted PSCs.

Tailoring Multifunctional Self‐Assembled Hole Transporting Molecules for Highly Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Cost‐effective self‐assembled molecules bearing anchoring groups are developed and applied as hole transporting layer in p–i–n perovskite solar cells. The donor–acceptor type self‐assembled molecule has strong interactions with indium doped tin oxide substrate and perovskite, resulting in a power conversion efficiency of over 23% and a lifetime of over 2000 h at 80% efficiency (T80) under maximum power point tracking. The self‐assembled hole transporting molecules (SAHTMs) bearing anchoring groups have been established as the hole transporting layers (HTLs) for highly efficient p–i–n perovskite solar cells (PSCs), yet their stability and engineering at the molecular level remain challenging. A topological design of highly anisotropic aligned SAHTM‐based HTLs for operationally stable PSCs that exhibit exceptional solar‐to‐electric power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) is demonstrated. The judiciously designed multifunctional self‐assembled molecules comprise the donor–acceptor subunit for hole transporting and the phosphonic acid group for anchoring, realizing face‐on π‐stacking parallel to the transparent conductive oxide substrate. The high affinity of SAHTMs to the multi‐crystalline perovskite thin film benefits passivating the perovskite buried interface, strengthening interfacial contact while facilitating interfacial hole transfer. Consequently, highly efficient p–i–n PSC devices are obtained with a champion PCE of 23.24% and outstanding operational stability toward various environmental factors including long‐term full sunlight soaking at evaluated temperatures. Perovskite solar modules with a champion efficiency approaching 20% are also fabricated for an active device area above 17 cm2.

Abstract:Device modelling of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 -based hole transport layer (HTL)-free nanotextured perovskite solar cells (PSC) was performed. In recent years, HTL-free PSCs have grown tremendously and gained widespread attention. Also, using nanostructures in PSCs significantly affected this type of solar cell's power conversion efficiency (PCE). Light trapping (LT) by nanostructures is a promising approach to optimizing the performance of PSCs in this work. We employed coupled optical and electrical modelling to optimize these nanostructures. In the current simulation, all parameters impacting the PSC were accurately examined and considered using the finite element technique (FEM). First, we obtained the photovoltaic results for two planar and free-HTL structures. The simulation results show that not using HTL reduces the PCE of PSC by up to 15 %. In this article, we emphasized nanostructures and their key features that minimize losses related to light by managing and optimizing light to achieve high PCE for the PSC. Using nano-texture at the surface of the active layer with ZnO material and optimizing the height, we were able to bring the lost efficiency in the free-HTL structure to 14.87 %, and also the short-circuit current density and open-circuit voltage for the proposed structure were 18.16 (mA/cm 2 ) and 0.98 (V), respectively.

Abstract:Narrow-bandgap mixed Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have showcased great potential to approach the Shockley-Queisser limit. Nevertheless, the practical application and long-term deployment of mixed Sn-Pb PSCs are still largely impeded by the rapid oxidation of Sn2+ ions and under-optimized carrier transport layer (CTL)/perovskite interfaces that would inevitably incur serious interfacial charge recombination and device performance degradation. Herein, we successfully removed the hole transport layer (HTL) by incorporating a small amount of organic phosphonic acid molecules into perovskites, which could preferably interact with Sn2+ ions (relative to Pb2+ analogues) at the grain boundaries (GBs) throughout the perovskite film thickness via coordination bonding, thus effectively retarding the oxidation of Sn2+, passivating the defects and suppressing the non-radiative recombination. Targeted modification effectively reinforced built-in potential by ∼100 mV, and favorably induced energy level cascade, thus accelerating spatial charge separation and facilitating the hole extraction from perovskite layer to underlying conductive electrodes even in the absence of HTL. Consequently, enhanced power conversion efficiencies up to 20.21% have been achieved, which is the record efficiency for the HTL-free mixed Sn-Pb PSCs, accompanied by a decent photovoltage of 0.87 V and improved long-term stability over 2400 h.

Abstract:Inverted planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA) layer as the hole transport layer (HTL) are shown to exhibit high power conversion efficiency (PCE). To date, efficient PTAA HTLs have required dopants to increase conductivity. These dopants, which include 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt/4-tert-butylpyridine, are harmful to the stability of the devices and may increase the cost of the PSCs. We realized efficient inverted planar PSCs with nondoped PTAA as the HTL. We used contact angle, absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectra, and atomic force microscope to measure the impact of nondoped PTAA on the upper perovskite films. The results showed that the nondoped PTAAs work as effectively as the doped ones. The inverted planar PSCs based on nondoped PTAA exhibited relatively excellent performance. We achieved a higher PCE of 18.11% and a very small hysteresis index of 0.32% were using a very thin nondoped PTAA film. This efficient nondoped HTL provided an easy way for inverted planar PSCs to solve problems introduced by dopants. This study provides a reference for the future preparation of highly efficient and stable PSCs with nondoped HTL.

Abstract:Deep traps originated from the defects formed at the surfaces and grain boundaries of the perovskite absorbers during their lattice assembly are the main reasons that cause nonradiative recombination and material degradation, which notably affect efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we demonstrate the substantially improved PSC performance by capping the photoactive layer with low-dimensional (LD) perovskitoids. The undercoordinated Pb ions and metallic Pb at the surfaces of the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite are effectively passivated via the Pb-I bonding from the favorably lattice-matched 3D/LD interface. The good stability and hydrophobicity of the LD (0D and 1D) perovskitoids allow excellent protection of the 3D active layer under severe environmental conditions. The PSC exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 24.18%, reproduced in an accredited independent photovoltaic testing laboratory. The unencapsulated device maintains 90% of its initial efficiency after 800 hours of continuous illumination under maximum power point operating conditions.
