Abstract:Electrocatalysis is dominated by reaction at the solid-liquid-gas interface; surface properties of electrocatalysts determine the electrochemical behavior. The surface charge of active sites on catalysts modulate adsorption and desorption of intermediates. However, there is no direct evidence to bridge surface charge and catalytic activity of active sites. Defects (active sites) were created on a HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) surface that broke the intrinsic sp(2)-hybridization of graphite by plasma, inducing localization of surface charge onto defective active sites, as shown by scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). An electrochemical test revealed enhanced intrinsic activity by the localized surface charge. DFT calculations confirmed the relationship between surface charge and catalytic activity. This work correlates surface charge and catalytic activity, providing insights into electrocatalytic behavior and guiding the design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Functionalized carbon nanomaterials, as significant options for renewable energy systems, are widely utilized in diversified electrochemical reactions in virtue of property advantages. The inevitable defect sites in architectures greatly affect physicochemical properties of carbon nanomaterials, thus defect engineering has recently become a vital research orientation of carbon‐based electrocatalysts. The intentionally introduced intrinsic carbon defect sites in the frameworks can directly serve as the potential active sites owing to the altered surface charge state, modulated adsorption free energy of key intermediates, as well as diminished bandgap. Furthermore, the synergistic sites between intrinsic defects and heteroatom dopants/captured atomic metal species can further optimize the electronic structure and adsorption/desorption behavior, making carbon‐based catalysts comparable to commercial precious metal catalysts in electrocatalysis. With pressing research demands, the common configurations, construction strategies, structure–activity relationships, and characterization methods for intrinsic carbon defect‐involved catalytic centers are systematically summarized. Such theoretical and experimental evidences of intrinsic defect‐induced activity can reveal the active centers and relevant catalytic mechanism, thereby providing necessary guidance for the design and construction of highly efficient carbon‐based electrocatalysts and promoting their commercial applications.

Abstract:The difficulties in O 2 molecule adsorption/activation, the cleavage of the O–O bond, and the desorption of the reaction intermediates at the surface of the electrodes make the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cells show extremely sluggish kinetics. Thus, it is important to the exploitation of highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the ORR to promote the performance and commercialization of fuel cells. Many studies have found that the defects affect the electron and the geometrical structure of the catalyst. The catalytic performance is enhanced by constructing defects to optimize the adsorption energy of substrates or intermediates. Unfortunately, still many issues are poorly recognized, such as the effect of defects (types, contents, and locations) in catalytic performance is unclear, and the catalytic mechanism of defective nanomaterials is lacking. In this review, the defective electrocatalysts divided into noble and non-noble metals for the ORR are highlighted and summarized. With the assistance of experimental results and theoretical calculations, the structure–activity relationships between defect engineering and catalytic performance have been clarified. Finally, after a deeper understanding of defect engineering, a rational design for efficient and robust ORR catalysts for PEMFCs is further guided.

Abstract:Developing valid strategies to fabricate highly active non-platinum-group metal electrocatalysts for catalyzing the sluggish cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently required. To our knowledge, the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts is highly related to their electronic and architectural properties. Defect or vacancy engineering is a particularly attractive means of modifying the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials. Herein, in this work, we proposed a facile Zn-induced defect strategy to engineer the electronic and surface structure of non-noble bimetallic NiCo alloy@nitrogen-doped graphene hybrid nanomaterials for boosting ORR activity. The optimized sample shows prominently enhanced activity for the ORR in KOH solution and exhibits better stability and methanol tolerance compared to Pt/C. Physicochemical and electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the enhanced ORR performance is mainly ascribed to the proper Zn-induced vacancy defects, which finely modulate the energy level of electrocatalyst, thus activating ORR process thermodynamically. Moreover, rich exposed active sites from vacancy defects largely facilitate the sluggish kinetics. This strategy is exceptionally promising to be applied to optimize other non-noble metal-based nanomaterials for highly efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Abstract Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction (ECR) has become one of the main methods to close the broken carbon cycle and temporarily store renewable energy, but there are still some problems such as poor stability, low activity, and selectivity. While the most promising strategy to improve ECR activity is to develop electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity, and long-term stability. Recently, defective carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention due to the unbalanced electron distribution and electronic structural distortion caused by the defects on the carbon materials. Here, the present review mainly summarizes the latest research progress of the construction of the diverse types of defects (intrinsic carbon defects, heteroatom doping defects, metal atomic sites, and edges detects) for carbon materials in ECR, and unveil the structure–activity relationship and its catalytic mechanism. The current challenges and opportunities faced by high-performance carbon materials in ECR are discussed, as well as possible future solutions. It can be believed that this review can provide some inspiration for the future of development of high-performance ECR catalysts.

Carbothermal Redox Reaction in Constructing Defective Carbon as Superior Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Abstract:The defects can greatly promote the catalytic activity of the carbon-based electrocatalyst due to charge redistribution of the electroneutral π-conjugated structure. However, it is still a huge challenge to introduce enough defects in carbon-based materials to improve their catalytic activity. Herein, we report a new method for defect generation by pyrolysis of the sulfur-nitrogen-containing coordination polymer [Zn(ptt)2]n (ptt =1-Phenyl-1H-tetrazole-5-thiol). A series of controlled experiments clearly demonstrates that the carbothermal reduction reaction of zinc sulfide with carbon at high temperature plays an important role in creating defects and enhancing the catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the carbon-based materials. The ZnS/C-1100 with high contents of defects and small amount ZnS nanoparticles exhibits excellent ORR electrocatalytic performances in alkaline medium, in which half-wave potential (0.894 V vs. RHE), stability, and methanol tolerance are all superior than 20 wt% Pt/C. Moreover, the ZnS/C-1100 driven ZAB (zinc air battery) exhibits stable discharge at 10 mA, peak power density of 134 mWcm-2 and cathode current density of 265 mAcm-2, which is significantly better than that catalyzed by the 20 wt% Pt/C under same conditions. This research not only develops a new highly active catalyst, but also provides a new method for the preparation of defect-rich carbon materials.

Abstract:Except heteroatoms doping, intrinsic defects in carbon matrix exert a profound influence on the performance of carbon–based electrocatalysts, but the relevant understanding is limited. Herein, a template–induced pyrolytic strategy is proposed to prepare dopant–free edge–rich mesoporous carbon (E–MC–1000, 1000 represents pyrolytic temperature). The obtained E–MC–1000 with short–range ordered bent graphene–like nanosheets possesses abundant intrinsic carbon defects (including edge defects and sp3–type carbon), thus displaying favorable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Obviously, our finding is valuable to understanding the role of intrinsic carbon defects towards ORR.

Abstract:Rational modulation of surface reconstruction in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) utilizing defect engineering to form efficient catalytic activity centers is a topical interest in the field of catalysis. The introduction of point defects has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to regulate the electronic configuration of electrocatalysts, but the influence of more complex planar defects (e.g., twins and stacking faults), on their intrinsic activity is still not fully understood. This study harnesses ultrasonic cavitation for rapid and controlled introduction of different types of defects in FeCoNi/FeAl2O4 hybrid coatings, optimizing OER catalytic activity. Theoretical calculations and experiments demonstrate that the different defects optimize the coordination environment and facilitate the activation of surface reconstruction into true catalytic activity centers at lower potentials. Moreover, it demonstrates exceptional durability, maintaining stable oxygen production at a high current density of 300 mA cm−2 for over 120 hours. This work not only presents a novel pathway for designing advanced electrocatalysts but also deepens our understanding of defect-engineered catalytic mechanisms, showcasing the potential for rapid and efficient enhancement of electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) and N-2 reduction reaction (NRR), which convert inert small molecules into high-value products under mild conditions, have received much research attention. Defect engineering is an important strategy for modulating the electronic properties of electrocatalysts, which may endow unexpected physical and chemical properties to break the intrinsic bottleneck and, therefore, boost the electrocatalytic performance. To date, various defective nanomaterials (such as nanocarbon and transition metal compounds) have been synthesized that display great potential for the CRR and NRR. Therefore, a deep understanding of the influence of defects on the catalytic activity is urgently needed. In this review, the type, regulation strategy, fine defect characterization methods, and their application in the electrocatalytic CRR and NRR are discussed and summarized. Furthermore, the major challenges, opportunities, and future development direction of defect engineering in CRR and NRR catalysts are proposed. This review aims to provide a reference for the proof-of-concept design of highly active CRR and NRR electrocatalysts.
Defective Carbon Derived Using a Dissolution-Recrystallization Strategy for Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Dopant-free defective carbon electrocatalysts have been considered as promising alternatives to traditional precious metal electrocatalysts recently. Compared with precious metal catalysts and transition-metal catalysts, since there are no metals doped, electrochemical devices assembled with dopant-free defective carbons are free from environmental pollution and subsequent recovery problems. In order to obtain abundant carbon defects with high-intrinsic catalytic activity, the synthesis of dopant-free defective carbons requires complex and harsh preparation conditions. Therefore, the construction of active defects with efficient utilization, especially through a simple process, is still a great challenge for the development of dopant-free defective carbon electrocatalysts. Herein, dissolution-recrystallization strategy was employed to design Zn-MOF-74 precursors for the synthesis of dopant-free defective carbons, realizing the synchronous manipulation of high ratio of carbon defects and highly exposed mass transfer channels. One-dimensional porous defective carbon nanorods (d-CNRs), which exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), electrocatalytic activity, and molecular selectivity, were synthesized by directly carbonizing rodlike Zn-MOF-74 precursors. Attributed to the dissolution-recrystallization strategy, with the activation of in situ-formed ZnO, the synthesized d-CNRs exhibited unique pore-crack nested porous structures, which carried abundant defects as activity sites for ORR and showed a surprisingly high specific surface area of 2459 m2/g with a high ratio of mesopores. d-CNRs also showed promising applications in Zn-air batteries with a stable long-term discharge of no obvious voltage drop after 60 h. The dissolution-recrystallization strategy provided a simple controllable pathway for the efficient construction of dopant-free defective carbon electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Defective engineering of carbon, including introduction of heteroatom dopants and creation of intrinsic carbon defects, to alter the surface electronic/spin state of the carbon matrix has become a vital research area of carbon‐based catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). When the heteroatom dopants and carbon intrinsic defects in the carbon matrix are spatially close enough, they could couple each other and synergistically endow the active centers with special electronic structures that might greatly enhance the ORR catalytic activities of the carbon‐based catalysts. In this concept, we propose a conceptual idea of coupling sites composed of heteroatom dopants and intrinsic carbon defects, systematically summarize the types of the coupling sites and their synergistic mechanisms for catalyzing the ORR, and present feasible ideas and major challenges for efficient construction and verification of the coupling sites. This concept might be enlightening for in‐depth studies on the design, construction, and understanding the structure‐activity relationship of high‐efficiency active sites in the carbon‐based catalysts.

Abstract:Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely considered as a promising candidate for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and its intrinsic activity is closely related to electronic and geometric structure of graphene supports. The carbon defect is widely existed in graphene, of which the intrinsic effect on ORR activity of Fe-N-C is still unclear. Here, we investigate ORR activity of 43 models representing Fe-N-C SACs accompanying with defects, including 555777, 5775 and 585-defects in three shell distances around FeN 4 site. Both pre-adsorption of hydroxide radical during ORR and the distance between Fe SAC and defect are demonstrated to affect the orbital hybridizations between Fe SAC and *OH intermediate, including Fe( d xz )-O( p x ), Fe( d yz )-O( p y ) and Fe( d 2 2 )-O( p z + s ) orbitals, which can accordingly regulate ORR activity of defective Fe-N-C materials. Importantly, we establish a geometrical structure descriptor to quantitatively predict the ORR activity of defective Fe-N-C catalysts without any requirements of performing DFT calculations. With the assistance of the structure descriptor, we find that the 585 and 5775-defects of the large ring adjacent to the FeN 4 pentagonal in fourth shell significantly boost the ORR performance of Fe-N-C. This work reveals the ORR activity origin of defective Fe-N-C materials, which provides intuitive guidance to boost the ORR performance of Fe-N-C materials by defect engineering, and may be extended to other types of defects and other single-atom catalysts. Abstract:Herein, a comprehensive summary of four kinds of defective graphene (DG)‐based electrocatalysts is presented, detailing their development history and origin of high catalytic activity, revealing the actual active sites and reaction mechanisms. In addition, the future development of DG‐based electrocatalysts is proposed, aiming to provide guidance on their target fabrication and practical applications. In the past decades, remarkable progress has been achieved in the exploration of electrocatalysts with high activity, long durability, and low cost. Among these, defective graphene (DG)‐based catalysts are considered as one of the most potential substitutes for precious metal‐based electrocatalysts. DG‐based catalysts contain abundant active centers with different configurations resulting from their extraordinary high‐structural tunability. Herein, an overview on recent advancements in developing four kinds of DG‐based catalysts is presented: 1) heteroatoms‐doped graphene; 2) intrinsic DG (vacancy and topological defect); 3) nonmetal atoms or/and metal species‐modified intrinsic DG (heterogeneous species and intrinsic defects co‐tuned DG); and 4) DG‐based van der Waals‐type multilayered heterostructures. In particular, the synergistic effects between various defects are discussed, and the origin of catalytic activity is reviewed. Meanwhile, the established defect‐derived catalytic mechanism is summarized, which is beneficial for the rational design and fabrication of high‐performance electrocatalysts for practical energy‐related applications. Finally, challenges and future research directions on defect engineering in noble metal‐free materials for electrocatalysis are proposed.

Abstract:The commercialization of fuel cells, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct methanol/formic acid fuel cells, is hampered by their poor stability, high cost, fuel crossover, and the sluggish kinetics of platinum (Pt) and Pt‐based electrocatalysts for both the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) or small molecule oxidation reaction (SMOR). Thus far, the exploitation of active and stable electrocatalysts has been the most promising strategy to improve the performance of fuel cells. Accordingly, increasing attention is being devoted to modulating the surface/interface electronic structure of electrocatalysts and optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediate species by defect engineering to enhance their catalytic performance. Defect engineering is introduced in terms of defect definition, classification, characterization, construction, and understanding. Subsequently, the latest advances in defective electrocatalysts for ORR and HOR/SMOR in fuel cells are scientifically and systematically summarized. Furthermore, the structure–activity relationships between defect engineering and electrocatalytic ability are further illustrated by coupling experimental results and theoretical calculations. With a deeper understanding of these complex relationships, the integration of defective electrocatalysts into single fuel‐cell systems is also discussed. Finally, the potential challenges and prospects of defective electrocatalysts are further proposed, covering controllable preparation, in situ characterization, and commercial applications.

Abstract:Catalysts play a critical role in accelerating the electrochemical reactions. Engineering the electronic structures and surface properties of electrocatalysts is a feasible approach to improve their catalytic performance. Introducing defects such as anion and cation vacancies into transition‐metal‐based materials to enhance their activity for various energy related electrocatalytic reactions has been receiving increasingly attentions in recent years. In this review, a systematic summary of the anion and cation defects on different electrochemical reactions will be presented. In particular, the commonly used methods to produce anion vacancies (such as oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus defects) and cation vacancies (such as Fe, Co and Ni defects) will be discussed. The control of the defect density and refilling heteroatoms to stabilize the anion defects and simultaneously to further enhance their catalytic performance are also summarized. In addition, recent work on creating multivacancies in transition‐metal‐based electrocatalysts for maximizing their catalytic activities is reviewed as well. Finally, future research on defect engineering in metal compounds for electrocatalysis are proposed. This review will guide the further development of various energy related electrocatalytic reactions promoted by defective structures in metal composites.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Electrocatalysts are the key components of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. High performance electrocatalysts can effectively reduce the energy barrier of the chemical reactions, thereby improving the conversion efficiency of energy devices. The electrocatalytic reaction mainly experiences adsorption and desorption of molecules (reactants, intermediates and products) on a catalyst surface, accompanied by charge transfer processes. Therefore, surface control of electrocatalysts plays a pivotal role in catalyst design and optimization. In recent years, many studies have revealed that the rational design and regulation of a defect structure can result in rearrangement of the atomic structure on the catalyst surface, thereby efficaciously promoting the electrocatalytic performance. However, the relationship between defects and catalytic properties still remains to be understood. In this review, the types of defects, synthesis methods and characterization techniques are comprehensively summarized, and then the intrinsic relationship between defects and electrocatalytic performance is discussed. Moreover, the application and development of defects are reviewed in detail. Finally, the challenges existing in defective electrocatalysts are summarized and prospected, and the future research direction is also suggested. We hope that this review will provide some principal guidance and reference for researchers engaged in defect and catalysis research, better help researchers understand the research status and development trends in the field of defects and catalysis, and expand the application of high-performance defective electrocatalysts to the field of electrocatalytic engineering.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts are currently attracting enormous attention due to their excellent performance for the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (ECRR). However, the origin of the high catalytic activities of doped-carbon materials remains obscure with the role of intrinsic carbon defects in promoting the ECRR receiving little attention despite the abundance of carbon defects in all carbon-based catalytic materials. Herein, a positive correlation is reported between the ECRR performance of carbon-based catalysts and the content of intrinsic carbon defects contained within these catalysts. Further, it is demonstrated that defective porous carbon catalysts containing no active heteroatom dopants also show excellent catalytic performance for ECRR. C K-edge near edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal that sp2 defects (octagonal and pentagonal) rather than edge defects are key to the excellent ECRR activity of the defective porous carbon catalysts. This work thus makes an important contribution to the understanding of the origin of the ECRR activity of carbon-based catalysts, with heteroatom doping perhaps being less important than previously envisaged for achieving a high ECRR performance.

Abstract:While the field of carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has experienced great progress in recent years, the fundamental issue of the origin of ORR activity is far from being clarified. To date, the ORR activities of these electrocatalysts are usually attributed to different dopants, while the contribution of intrinsic carbon defects has been explored little. Herein, we report the high ORR activity of the defective carbon nanocages, which is better than that of the B-doped carbon nanotubes and comparable to that of the N-doped carbon nanostructures. Density functional theory calculations indicate that pentagon and zigzag edge defects are responsible for the high ORR activity. The mutually corroborated experimental and theoretical results reveal the significant contribution of the intrinsic carbon defects to ORR activity, which is crucial for understanding the ORR origin and exploring the advanced carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts.
