Abstract:Functionalized carbon nanomaterials, as significant options for renewable energy systems, are widely utilized in diversified electrochemical reactions in virtue of property advantages. The inevitable defect sites in architectures greatly affect physicochemical properties of carbon nanomaterials, thus defect engineering has recently become a vital research orientation of carbon‐based electrocatalysts. The intentionally introduced intrinsic carbon defect sites in the frameworks can directly serve as the potential active sites owing to the altered surface charge state, modulated adsorption free energy of key intermediates, as well as diminished bandgap. Furthermore, the synergistic sites between intrinsic defects and heteroatom dopants/captured atomic metal species can further optimize the electronic structure and adsorption/desorption behavior, making carbon‐based catalysts comparable to commercial precious metal catalysts in electrocatalysis. With pressing research demands, the common configurations, construction strategies, structure–activity relationships, and characterization methods for intrinsic carbon defect‐involved catalytic centers are systematically summarized. Such theoretical and experimental evidences of intrinsic defect‐induced activity can reveal the active centers and relevant catalytic mechanism, thereby providing necessary guidance for the design and construction of highly efficient carbon‐based electrocatalysts and promoting their commercial applications.

Bridging Surface Charge and Catalytic Activity of Defective Carbon Electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis is dominated by reaction at the solid-liquid-gas interface; surface properties of electrocatalysts determine the electrochemical behavior. The surface charge of active sites on catalysts modulate adsorption and desorption of intermediates. However, there is no direct evidence to bridge surface charge and catalytic activity of active sites. Defects (active sites) were created on a HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) surface that broke the intrinsic sp(2)-hybridization of graphite by plasma, inducing localization of surface charge onto defective active sites, as shown by scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). An electrochemical test revealed enhanced intrinsic activity by the localized surface charge. DFT calculations confirmed the relationship between surface charge and catalytic activity. This work correlates surface charge and catalytic activity, providing insights into electrocatalytic behavior and guiding the design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts are the key components of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. High performance electrocatalysts can effectively reduce the energy barrier of the chemical reactions, thereby improving the conversion efficiency of energy devices. The electrocatalytic reaction mainly experiences adsorption and desorption of molecules (reactants, intermediates and products) on a catalyst surface, accompanied by charge transfer processes. Therefore, surface control of electrocatalysts plays a pivotal role in catalyst design and optimization. In recent years, many studies have revealed that the rational design and regulation of a defect structure can result in rearrangement of the atomic structure on the catalyst surface, thereby efficaciously promoting the electrocatalytic performance. However, the relationship between defects and catalytic properties still remains to be understood. In this review, the types of defects, synthesis methods and characterization techniques are comprehensively summarized, and then the intrinsic relationship between defects and electrocatalytic performance is discussed. Moreover, the application and development of defects are reviewed in detail. Finally, the challenges existing in defective electrocatalysts are summarized and prospected, and the future research direction is also suggested. We hope that this review will provide some principal guidance and reference for researchers engaged in defect and catalysis research, better help researchers understand the research status and development trends in the field of defects and catalysis, and expand the application of high-performance defective electrocatalysts to the field of electrocatalytic engineering.

Abstract:Abstract Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction (ECR) has become one of the main methods to close the broken carbon cycle and temporarily store renewable energy, but there are still some problems such as poor stability, low activity, and selectivity. While the most promising strategy to improve ECR activity is to develop electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity, and long-term stability. Recently, defective carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention due to the unbalanced electron distribution and electronic structural distortion caused by the defects on the carbon materials. Here, the present review mainly summarizes the latest research progress of the construction of the diverse types of defects (intrinsic carbon defects, heteroatom doping defects, metal atomic sites, and edges detects) for carbon materials in ECR, and unveil the structure–activity relationship and its catalytic mechanism. The current challenges and opportunities faced by high-performance carbon materials in ECR are discussed, as well as possible future solutions. It can be believed that this review can provide some inspiration for the future of development of high-performance ECR catalysts.

Abstract:Herein, a comprehensive summary of four kinds of defective graphene (DG)‐based electrocatalysts is presented, detailing their development history and origin of high catalytic activity, revealing the actual active sites and reaction mechanisms. In addition, the future development of DG‐based electrocatalysts is proposed, aiming to provide guidance on their target fabrication and practical applications. In the past decades, remarkable progress has been achieved in the exploration of electrocatalysts with high activity, long durability, and low cost. Among these, defective graphene (DG)‐based catalysts are considered as one of the most potential substitutes for precious metal‐based electrocatalysts. DG‐based catalysts contain abundant active centers with different configurations resulting from their extraordinary high‐structural tunability. Herein, an overview on recent advancements in developing four kinds of DG‐based catalysts is presented: 1) heteroatoms‐doped graphene; 2) intrinsic DG (vacancy and topological defect); 3) nonmetal atoms or/and metal species‐modified intrinsic DG (heterogeneous species and intrinsic defects co‐tuned DG); and 4) DG‐based van der Waals‐type multilayered heterostructures. In particular, the synergistic effects between various defects are discussed, and the origin of catalytic activity is reviewed. Meanwhile, the established defect‐derived catalytic mechanism is summarized, which is beneficial for the rational design and fabrication of high‐performance electrocatalysts for practical energy‐related applications. Finally, challenges and future research directions on defect engineering in noble metal‐free materials for electrocatalysis are proposed.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional layered graphene‐like crystals including transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received extensive research interest due to their diverse electronic, valleytronic, and chemical properties, with the corresponding optoelectronics and catalysis application being actively explored. However, the recent surge in two‐dimensional materials science is accompanied by equally great challenges, such as defect engineering in large‐scale sample synthesis. It is necessary to elucidate the effect of structural defects on the electronic properties in order to develop an application‐specific strategy for defect engineering. Here, two aspects of the existing knowledge of native defects in two‐dimensional crystals are reviewed. One is the point defects emerging in graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, as probed by atomically resolved electron microscopy, and their local electronic properties, as measured by single‐atom electron energy‐loss spectroscopy. The other will focus on the point defects in TMDs and their influence on the electronic structure, photoluminescence, and electric transport properties. This review of atomic defects in two‐dimensional materials will offer a clear picture of the defect physics involved to demonstrate the local modulation of the electronic properties and possible benefits in potential applications in magnetism and catalysis.

Abstract:Catalysts play a critical role in accelerating the electrochemical reactions. Engineering the electronic structures and surface properties of electrocatalysts is a feasible approach to improve their catalytic performance. Introducing defects such as anion and cation vacancies into transition‐metal‐based materials to enhance their activity for various energy related electrocatalytic reactions has been receiving increasingly attentions in recent years. In this review, a systematic summary of the anion and cation defects on different electrochemical reactions will be presented. In particular, the commonly used methods to produce anion vacancies (such as oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus defects) and cation vacancies (such as Fe, Co and Ni defects) will be discussed. The control of the defect density and refilling heteroatoms to stabilize the anion defects and simultaneously to further enhance their catalytic performance are also summarized. In addition, recent work on creating multivacancies in transition‐metal‐based electrocatalysts for maximizing their catalytic activities is reviewed as well. Finally, future research on defect engineering in metal compounds for electrocatalysis are proposed. This review will guide the further development of various energy related electrocatalytic reactions promoted by defective structures in metal composites.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The exploitation of highly efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts is a key issue of the broad application of green electrocatalytic reactions and efficient energy devices. Recently, modulating the surface structure of electrocatalysts to improve the catalytic activity has attracted a lot of attention. In particular, defect engineering is an important strategy to modulate the surface electronic structure of electrocatalysts. In this review, an overview of defects in metal, carbon materials, transition metal compounds, and defect-decorated catalysts is presented. The defect species, synthesis methods, characterization, and essential defect catalytic mechanism are introduced. Notably, tuning electronic structure to modulate the intermediates' adsorption energy is highlighted throughout the review. Finally, the design principles for defect electrocatalysts are proposed. The in-depth understanding of the structure–reactivity relationship will provide more profound guidance for the design of defect electrocatalysts and potential application in energy conversion and green synthesis.

Abstract:Understanding the physics of structurally and chemically complex transition-metal oxide and polyanionic materials such as those used for battery electrodes is challenging, even at the level of pristine compounds. Yet these materials are also prone to and their properties and performance are strongly affected or even determined by crystallographic point defects. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the study of defects and doping in such materials using first-principles calculations. The emphasis is on describing a theoretical and computational approach that has the ability to predict defect landscapes under various synthesis conditions, provide guidelines for defect characterization and defect-controlled synthesis, uncover the mechanisms for electronic and ionic conduction and electrochemical extraction and (re-)insertion, and provide an understanding of the effects of doping. Though applied to battery materials here, the approach is general and applicable to any materials in which the defect physics plays a role or drives the properties of interest. Thus, this work is intended as an in-depth review of defect physics in particular classes of materials, but also as a methodological template for the understanding and design of complex functional materials.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) and N-2 reduction reaction (NRR), which convert inert small molecules into high-value products under mild conditions, have received much research attention. Defect engineering is an important strategy for modulating the electronic properties of electrocatalysts, which may endow unexpected physical and chemical properties to break the intrinsic bottleneck and, therefore, boost the electrocatalytic performance. To date, various defective nanomaterials (such as nanocarbon and transition metal compounds) have been synthesized that display great potential for the CRR and NRR. Therefore, a deep understanding of the influence of defects on the catalytic activity is urgently needed. In this review, the type, regulation strategy, fine defect characterization methods, and their application in the electrocatalytic CRR and NRR are discussed and summarized. Furthermore, the major challenges, opportunities, and future development direction of defect engineering in CRR and NRR catalysts are proposed. This review aims to provide a reference for the proof-of-concept design of highly active CRR and NRR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Point defect engineering endows catalysts with novel physical and chemical properties, elevating their electrocatalytic efficiency. The introduction of defects emerges as a promising strategy, effectively modifying the electronic structure of active sites. This optimization influences the adsorption energy of intermediates, thereby mitigating reaction energy barriers, altering paths, enhancing selectivity, and ultimately improving the catalytic efficiency of electrocatalysts. To elucidate the impact of defects on the electrocatalytic process, we comprehensively outline the roles of various point defects, their synthetic methodologies, and characterization techniques. Importantly, we consolidate insights into the relationship between point defects and catalytic activity for hydrogen/oxygen evolution and CO2/O2/N2 reduction reactions by integrating mechanisms from diverse reactions. This underscores the pivotal role of point defects in enhancing catalytic performance. At last, the principal challenges and prospects associated with point defects in current electrocatalysts are proposed, emphasizing their role in advancing the efficiency of electrochemical energy storage and conversion materials.

Tailoring defects in 2D materials for electrocatalysis

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with unique electronic structures, tunable band-gap states and highly exposed surface areas have provided researchers a fertile ground for electrocatalysis. However, the spatial anisotropy and inert basal planes severely hinder charge transport and catalytic conversion efficiency. At this time, three major issues need to be addressed: (i) tuning surface electronic states to optimize the reaction energy barriers; (ii) incorporation of sufficient active sites to improve the surface electrochemical reactivity and (iii) enhancing the electrical conductivity to accelerate electron transport among the reaction interfaces. Defect engineering is an effective strategy to address the above issues by modulating local electronic configurations, and thus triggering catalytic activity of the inert components. In this chapter, we summarize the state-of-the-art advances in defect engineering of 2D materials for electrocatalytic applications, involving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Moreover, the electrocatalytic mechanisms on the defective centers are also discussed in depth. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of defect engineering for 2D electrocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:Efficient and sustainable clean energy technology is an urgent need to solve energy crisis and alleviate environmental pollution. Reasonable design of electrode materials can effectively improve the performance of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. As an effective method to control the properties of electrode materials, defects have recently received extensive attention. Herein, in this review, we will systematically summarize the application of defect chemistry on electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Firstly, we mainly describe the research content of defect chemistry from three aspects, including defect construction, the dynamic evolution and regulation of defects. Based on those understanding, the applications of defect chemistry in fuel cells, metal‐ion batteries and carbon/nitrogen fixation are discussed, respectively. Finally, the existing challenges and future development prospects of defect chemistry are proposed. Overall, we hope this review could help readers to better understand and apply defect chemistry.

Abstract:Carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts have been placed with great expectations since their very first emergence. As a promising alternative to the noble metal-based counterparts, significant advancements have been made in this exciting research field. Sizable amounts of efforts have been devoted to understanding the function and mechanism of metalloid dopants. It is believed that dopants induce asymmetric distribution of charge/spin densities, turning adjoining carbon atoms into catalytically active sites. However, the intrinsic structural imperfections/defects that ubiquitously exist in carbon materials have recently been demonstrated to outperform dopants in enhancing the catalytic properties of carbon catalysts. This new source of activity contributor has thus triggered considerable attention to dopant-free defect-rich carbon electrocatalysts. To follow up recent progress, we present a state-of-the-art and systematic overview specifically focusing on the critical role of intrinsic structural defects in dopant-free carbon electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications. Various aspects in terms of definition, characterization, function, and catalytic mechanism of structural defects are thoroughly covered together with some shared perspectives on the future opportunities. We hope this contribution will inspire more efforts in this fascinating direction and push forward the further development of carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-free carbon catalysts, especially with rich topological defects, have exhibited extraordinary performance in various electrochemical reactions. To fundamentally understand the relation of activity with specific defect, control of defect type in carbon is indispensable and unfortunately still remains a great challenge to date. Here, we developed a general edge-engineering method to produce a class of definitive defect configurations converted from corresponding specific nitrogen (N) doping sites. Theoretical simulations provide the fundamental capability and the design principles. Experimentally, structural characterizations clearly elucidate the specific one-to-one conversion of confirmative N configuration to carbon defect; e.g., graphitic-N to divacancy (C585), pyridinic-N to separate pentagon (S-C5), and pyrrolic-N to adjacent pentagons (A-C5), respectively. For electrocatalysis, A-C5 defects show the highest intrinsic activity in oxygen reduction reaction, whereas C585 defects perform the best in hydrogen evolution reaction. This work provides the main guidance in design of carbon-based catalysts via control of target defect synthesis.

Abstract:The formation and preparation of defects and the dynamic evolution of defects on electrocatalytic reactions are summarized. The summary describes the current advances in the dynamic evolution process of defects in oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. This review focuses on the formation and preparation of defects, the dynamic evolution process of defects, and the influence of defect dynamic evolution on catalytic reactions. The summary of the current advances in the dynamic evolution process of defects in oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction, and the given perspectives are expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of defective electrocatalysts on the structural evolution process during electrocatalysis and the reaction mechanisms, especially for the defect dynamic evolution on the performance in catalytic reactions.

Abstract:The exploration of efficient and earth-rich electrocatalysts for electrochemical reactions is critical to the implementation of large-scale green energy conversion and storage techniques. Two-dimensional (2D) materials with distinctive structural and electrochemical properties provide fertile soil for researchers to harvest basic science and emerging applications, which can be divided into metal-free materials (such as graphene, carbon nitride and black phosphorus) and transition metal-based materials (such as halogenides, phosphates, oxides, hydroxides, and MXenes). For faultless 2D materials, they usually exhibit poor electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity because only edge sites can be available while the base surface is chemically inactive. Defect engineering is an effective strategy to generate active sites in 2D materials for improving electrocatalytic activity. This review presents feasible design strategies for constructing defect sites (including edge defects, vacancy defects and dopant derived defects) in 2D materials to improve their HER performance. The essential relationships between defect structures and electrocatalytic HER performance are discussed in detail, providing valuable guidance for rationally fabricating efficient HER electrocatalysts. The hydrogen adsorption/desorption energy can be optimized by constructing defect sites at different locations and by adjusting the local electronic structure to form unsaturated coordination states for efficient HER.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) with rationally designed electrocatalysts is a promising strategy to reduce CO2 emission and produce value-added products. Reactive sites of heterogeneous catalysts usually lie on the surface and subsurface, which allow improvement of the catalytic property by engineering the surface atoms. Defects of an electrocatalyst, such as dopants, atom vacancies, and grain boundaries, have potential to enable unconventional adsorption behaviors and chemical activities of reactants on the catalyst surface, and selectively enhance the stability of specific intermediates and corresponding ECR pathways. Moreover, the interface between two different electrocatalyst components can also stabilize active surface catalytic sites and enable their synergetic effects. In this review, we summarize how surface defects and interface can be rationally designed and functioned in ECR catalysts, and how these atomic-level controlling approaches help to promote efficiency and selectivity. Structural Defects on the Electronic Transport Properties of Carbon-Based Nanostructures

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are expected to be used as the components of nanodevices in the future. The fabrication and characterization of carbon-based materials with unique electronic and transport properties in terms of atomic engineering at nanoscale have been experimentally realized. However, the occurrence of various defects is widely regarded to be inevitable during the chemically synthesized and lithographically patterned approaches. Moreover, scientist can now make use of electron or ion beams to tailor the atomic structure of low-dimensional material with high precision to obtain particular characteristics. Enormous experimental and theoretical works are dedicated to the understanding of the role of defects on nanomaterials, with special emphasis on carbon-based nanosystems. In this chapter, we report recent advances in the area and present multiscale modeling to investigate the influences of structural defects, including vacancy, substitutional doping, topological defects, Stone–Wales defects, as well as composite defects, on the electronic transport properties of carbon-based low-dimensional materials.
