Abstract:We report what we believe to be the first highly symmetric first-order IR femtosecond laser fiber Bragg gratings within the telecommunications C band in free-standing optical fiber, fabricated with a relatively low NA lens and without use of oil immersion techniques. This grating features the smallest dimensions for a point-by-point fiber grating reported so far (to our knowledge). This achievement paves the way to rapid mass manufacturing of highly efficient and stable Bragg gratings using ultrafast lasers in any type of fiber. Mastering this femtosecond grating inscription technique also allowed the fabrication of the first Bragg gratings with direct near-IR femtosecond inscription in photonic crystal fibers, and without the use of techniques that rely on the compensation of the holey structure.

Abstract:In order to make the whole fiber core modified, an improved point-by-point inscription method (called a transversal-scanning inscription method) is proposed to fabricate long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) by using femtosecond laser. LPFGs with an attenuation depth of 16dB are achieved within the wavelength range of 1580–1680nm. We have compared the bending properties of LPFGs fabricated by the line-by-line scanning inscription method and the transversal-scanning inscription method at the orthogonal directions. It is found that increasing scanning area using the transversal-scanning method can enhance the bend sensitivity obviously. The resulting curvature sensitivities are −4.82nm/m−1 and −1.63nm/m−1 at the 0° and 90° bend orientations respectively, within the curvature range from 1.75m−1 to 3m−1 in the experiment. The LPFG-I fabricated by the line-by-line scanning inscription method experiences red-shift, while the LPFG-II fabricated by the transversal-scanning inscription method experiences blue-shift.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser direct-writing is an attractive technique to fabricate fiber Bragg gratings and to achieve through-the-coating inscription. In this article, we report the direct inscription of high-quality first-order gratings in optical fiber, without the use of an index-matching medium. A new alignment technique based on the inscription of weak probe gratings is used to track the relative position between the focal spot and fiber core. A simple and flexible method to precisely control the position of each grating plane is also presented. With this method, periodic phase modulation of grating structures is achieved and used to inscribe arbitrary apodization and phase profiles. It is shown that a burst of multiple laser pulses used to inscribe each grating plane leads to a significant increase in the grating strength, while maintaining low insertion loss, critical for many applications.

Abstract:The influence of the fiber geometry on the point-by-point inscription of fiber Bragg gratings using a femtosecond laser is highlighted. Fiber Bragg gratings with high spectral quality and strong first-order Bragg resonances within the C-band are achieved by optimizing the inscription process. Large birefringence (1.2x10(-4)) and high degree of polarization-dependent index modulation are observed in these gratings. Potential applications of these gratings in resonators are further illustrated.

Abstract:Bragg gratings were fabricated in all-solid Bragg photonic crystal fibers with 100 fs, 800 nm infrared radiations and a phase mask. Both multimode and single-mode grating resonances were achieved by accurately adjusting the focal position of the irradiation beam in the Bragg fiber. Thermal annealing investigations indicated that the gratings were induced by Type I-IR and Type II-IR refractive index change. Typical Bragg wavelength shifted with the change of temperature and strain, which were measured respectively.

Abstract:The point-by-point technique of fabricating fibre-Bragg gratings using an ultrafast laser enables complete control of the position of each index modification that comprises the grating. By tailoring the local phase, amplitude and spacing of the grating's refractive index modulations it is possible to create gratings with complex transmission and reflection spectra. We report a series of grating structures that were realized by exploiting these flexibilities. Such structures include gratings with controlled bandwidth, and amplitude- and phase-modulated sampled (or superstructured) gratings. A model based on coupled-mode theory provides important insights into the manufacture of such gratings. Our approach offers a quick and easy method of producing complex, non-uniform grating structures in both fibres and other mono-mode waveguiding structures.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m-1). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this FBG exhibits a high birefringence of 2.13 × 10-4. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method can be used to inscribe high-quality FBGs that could be used in many fields such as communication, fiber laser, polarization-selective filtering and multi-parameter sensing.

Abstract:A small-period long-period grating (LPG) with a period of $40\mu \text{m}$ fabricated in a single-mode fiber by femtosecond laser direct writing has been demonstrated. A series of high-order Bragg resonant peaks of Bragg grating and attenuation bands of LPG can be observed simultaneously in the broadband spectrum range that exhibited different responses to surrounding refractive index, temperature, and axial strain. Meanwhile, we provided a sensitivity matrix to correct the errors caused by temperature in measurements of refractive index and strain to achieve a dual-parameter fiber sensor at high temperature.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser pulses with ultrashort time duration and ultrahigh peak power can cause the refractive index change in transparent materials and micron scale machining precision. Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with different periods and different grating lengths in the standard single mode fiber were fabricated, using laser direct writing method, by femtosecond laser pulses with pulse width of 200 fs at a center wavelength of 800 nm in air. The transmission spectra were studied in the range of 1510 nm to 1610 nm. Two LPFGs with period of 400 μm, and 550 μm, respectively fabricated with same irradiation power of 275 mW, were shown. The loss peak of 1552 nm, the transmission loss of 16 dB and the FWHM of 20 nm were obtained when the period of LPFG was 400 μm, while the loss peak of 1588 nm, the transmission loss of 20 dB and the FWHM of 25 nm were achieved when the period of LPFG was 550 μm. According to the theory of mode field coupling for long period grating, it was indicated that the modulation of refractive index Δn was in the level of 10 -2 .

Abstract:Gradient-index modulation prefabrication in the cladding of standard telecom fibers was proposed for femtosecond laser processing of Type II-IR fiber Bragg gratings. The refractive index of the prefabricated region in the cladding had a large gradient across the laser beam, which could act as a cylindrical lens to enhance the focusing of laser beam when writing Type II-IR gratings. With the help of prefabrication, the threshold pulse energy for processing Type II-IR FBGs was lowered from 750 μJ to 520 μJ. The fabricated FBGs showed good thermal stability at temperatures over 900 °C.
