Abstract:Few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG) has wide applications in the field of multi-wavelength fiber lasers and fiber-optic sensing. In this letter, FBG is successfully written in a novel type of FM fiber (FMF) based on 248-nm excimer laser and a uniform phase mask. A low-loss coupling between the FMF to a single-mode fiber is realized by a graded-index multi-mode fiber with a length of about a quarter pitch. The sensing properties of the FMF grating are further investigated. The experimental results indicate that the novel FM-FBG has sensitivities of temperature, strain, and bending of 11.2 pm/degrees C, 1.3 pm/mu epsilon, and 636.9 pm/m(-1), respectively.

Abstract:A novel approach is proposed towards the design of fiber Bragg gratings with multi-channel right-angled triangular spectrum. Firstly, a single-channel grating is synthesized utilizing an adaptive quantum particle swarm optimization with the piecewise constant mutated factor. Meanwhile, the reflectivity spectrum with good linear edge for a short grating is obtained. Then, for its merits of easy fabrication, the superposition method is adopted to design multi-channel gratings with initial spectral distortion. Finally, this distortion is optimized by the method in the first step. It is shown that the design outcomes still retain the features of easy fabrication and short length. Such gratings would be useful as wavelength-interrogation devices with multiple physical parameters in optical sensor systems.

Abstract:The high frequency ultrasonic wave transmitting along UV-induced fiber Bragg grating, produces a long periodic ultrasonic grating to modulate the fiber Bragg grating, which is called as ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating. The acoustic-optic characteristics of the ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating are analyzed by using mode coupling theory. It is found that there are many individual peaks with same interval in the reflective spectra of ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating, and the interval of reflective peaks depends on the ultrasonic frequency. It is therefore possible to tune the reflective wavelength of first-order peak in the reflective spectra through changing ultrasonic frequency, so as to realize fast-tunable acoustic-optic filter with wide tunable range. Compared with conventional tunable acoustic-optic filters the present filter offers more narrow bandwidth and faster tuning speed.

Abstract:Based on the mutated adaptive quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (MAQPSO) algorithm and the discrete layer peeling (DLP) algorithm, we propose a method to design triangular-spectrum fiber Bragg gratings (TS-FBGs). In this method, the DLP algorithm is used to generate an appropriate initial range of the index modulation, and the MAQPSO technique is applied to optimize the index modulation within this range. The quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization algorithm with mutation operation can improve the search performance of this algorithm. We purposely use a linear weighting factor for the fitness value function in view of the linear edge triangular-spectrum. This dramatically accelerates the convergence in the numerical implementation. Using the proposed method, a 0.2nm bandwidth TS-FBG is designed and the performance is shown to be better than previously reported results in the literature. Then, a 2.5nm bandwidth TS-FBG is reconstructed; it is indicated that a short grating length can be used to realize the TS-FBG with chirp-free structure so that complex phase modulation is avoided in fabrication. Finally, a triple-channel TS-FBG with sampled-free structure is successfully designed and optimized. We also present an analysis on the tolerance of the design method over possible fabrication error.

Abstract:The invention discloses a method which prepares fiber Bragg gratings through femtosecond lasers, and a device thereof, making use of the femtosecond laser transient coherence technology to prepare fiber Bragg gratings inside the fibers. The fiber Bragg grating preparation method comprises the following steps: a fiber core which gets the coating layer removed is fixed on a three-dimensional precision mobile platform; two beams of femtosecond lasers are respectively focalized through a lens and interfered to act on the fiber core; and a fiber Bragg grating structure is generated inside the fiber core through photo-induced refractive index changes. The invention has the advantages of high preparation efficiency, good stability, as well as simple equipment and device; and the prepared fiber Bragg gratings can not subside.

Abstract:Gradient-index modulation prefabrication in the cladding of standard telecom fibers was proposed for femtosecond laser processing of Type II-IR fiber Bragg gratings. The refractive index of the prefabricated region in the cladding had a large gradient across the laser beam, which could act as a cylindrical lens to enhance the focusing of laser beam when writing Type II-IR gratings. With the help of prefabrication, the threshold pulse energy for processing Type II-IR FBGs was lowered from 750 μJ to 520 μJ. The fabricated FBGs showed good thermal stability at temperatures over 900 °C.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m-1). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this FBG exhibits a high birefringence of 2.13 × 10-4. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method can be used to inscribe high-quality FBGs that could be used in many fields such as communication, fiber laser, polarization-selective filtering and multi-parameter sensing.

Abstract:We present a method for synthesizing complex fiber Bragg gratings using femtosecond UV laser pulses and image projection from a small phase mask. Fiber gratings with arbitrary spectral reflectivity can be achieved by stitching short grating segments with proper phases. The relative phase between neighboring sub-gratings is controlled using in situ UV-excited fluorescence monitoring. During the fabrication, we are able to monitor the amplitude and phase of each segment right after it was written. This is accomplished by scanning the phase mask with attenuated UV laser pulses and observing modulation in fluorescence. This information allows us to precisely set the position of fiber for the next segment. A fabricated grating segment can also be effectively erased with additional out-of-phase UV exposure. Bragg gratings over both telecom C-band and L-band can be conveniently achieved with this simple setup and a single phase mask.

Abstract:In this paper, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are inscribed in Tm3+-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber (TDFTF) and applied to construction of a 2.3-µm all-fiber laser. The FBGs with a center wavelength of 2.3 µm are fabricated by using the femtosecond laser point-by-point method combined with the slit beam shaping technique. Both the reflectivity and insertion loss of FBGs are investigated for different pulse energies, grating orders, and grating lengths. The FBG with a reflectivity of 90.4% is inscribed at one end of a 1.5-m-long TDFTF. Employing a 1410-nm/1570-nm dual-wavelength upconversion pumping technique, lasing at 2.3 µm is achieved. The maximum unsaturated output power is 1.88 W, and the slope efficiency is 37%. High stability has been demonstrated for both the wavelength and output power of the laser over an hour. This research is crucial for advancing the development of high-power fiber lasers operating at 2.3 µm.

Abstract:Long-period fiber gratings are inscribed in all-solid photonic bandgap fibers by use of a femtosecond laser with the line-scanning method. The coupling from the fundamental core mode to LP11 core mode can be readily obtained and the resonant wavelength of the grating is found to be highly sensitive to tensile strain while being nearly insensitive or only slightly sensitive to temperature, curvature, and external refractive index. Such gratings can be effectively used in stable spectral filters and optical fiber sensors with largely reduced cross-sensitivity.

Abstract:In this work, a method is proposed and demonstrated for fabrication of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) in single-mode fiber by femtosecond laser point-by-point inscription. CFBGs with bandwidths from 2 to 12 nm and dispersion ranges from 14.2 to 85 ps/nm are designed and achieved. The sensitivities of temperature and strain are 14.91 pm/°C and 1.21pm/µε, respectively. Compared to the present phase mask method, femtosecond laser point-by-point inscription technology has the advantage of manufacturing CFBGs with different parameter flexibilities, and is expected to be widely applied in the future.

Abstract:A two-dimensional optical fiber grating with multi sub-gratings based on a 2D spatially encoded phase mask is designed in this study. The 2D fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is composed of two non-overlapping sub-FBGs, which are laterally separated along the radial direction of the fiber core. Unlike traditional FBGs, the refractive index of the 2D FBG is modulated both on the axial and radial directions of the fiber core, which are realized by spatially encoded diffraction based on a 2D spatially encoded phase mask. Compared with the overlapping grating, the 2D FBG can be fabricated at one time to achieve multi-wavelength output, and its compact structure provides a new idea for multi-wavelength multiplexing. As examples, a single-core multi-channel moiré fiber grating and 2D FBG with three subgratings are designed and fabricated on a single-mode fiber and LMA fiber, respectively. Using a 2D spatially encoded mask can improve the optical fiber refractive index modulation from one- to two- or even three-dimensions, which is helpful for precise manipulation of the complex optical field of optical fiber.

Abstract:We report for the first time to inscribe the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) in Tm3+-doped multimode double-clad silica fiber by 800 nm femtosecond laser with a phase mask. The 1.35 μm period Bragg grating is written into the fiber core, which is responded to the laser center wavelength located at nearly 1960 nm. Continuous wave total output power of 11.5 W is obtained under the launched pump power of 29.8 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 45.0% and a conversion efficiency of 38.6%.

Abstract:Two slightly shifted gratings are inscribed, one over the other, in an SMF fiber with a femtosecond laser and a phase mask. The transmission spectrum of the complex structure is similar to that of a phase-shifted grating; yet, the fabrication process is fast and simple compared to standard methods. High-quality semi-phase-shifted gratings with -24 dB transmission loss and <100 pm transmission bandwidth are presented. Their application as highly narrow micro-resonators and notch filters seems feasible.
