Abstract:Significance The subject of cluster algebras was born out of the study of concrete mathematical questions such as “how can we detect when a matrix will have all eigenvalues positive?” Recently it has turned out that cluster algebras show up in all kinds of unexpected places, even in the physicists’ playground of quantum field theory. This paper is a review of one way in which quantum field theory and cluster algebras interact. In particular, the paper argues that geometric ideas coming from quantum field theory lead to a natural extension of the theory of cluster algebras.

Abstract:We define three families of quivers in which the braid relations of the symmetric group $S_n$ are realized by mutations and automorphisms. A sequence of eight braid moves on a reduced word for the longest element of $S_4$ yields three trivial cluster transformations with 8, 32 and 32 mutations. For each of these cluster transformations, a unitary operator representing a single braid move in a quantum mechanical system solves the tetrahedron equation. The solutions thus obtained are constructed from the noncompact quantum dilogarithm and can be identified with the partition functions of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed three-sphere.

Abstract:Typical fermion algorithms require the computation (or sampling) of the fermion determinant. We focus instead on cluster algorithms which do not involve the determinant and involve a more physically relevant sampling of the configuration space. We develop new cluster algorithms and design classes of models for fermions coupled to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $U(1)$ gauge fields that are amenable to being simulated by these cluster algorithms in a sign-problem free way. Such simulations should contain rich phase diagrams and are particularly relevant for quantum simulator experiments.

Abstract:During the last few years, a new approach to language processing has started to emerge, which has become known under various labels such as "data-oriented parsing", "corpus-based interpretation", and "tree-bank grammar" (cf. van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod 1992-96; Bod et al. 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Kaplan 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Scha 1990-92; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an et al. 1994; Sima'an 1995-96; Tugwell 1995). This approach, which we will call "data-oriented processing" or "DOP", embodies the assumption that human language perception and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences, rather than with abstract linguistic rules. The models that instantiate this approach therefore maintain large corpora of linguistic representations of previously occurring utterances. When processing a new input utterance, analyses of this utterance are constructed by combining fragments from the corpus; the occurrence-frequencies of the fragments are used to estimate which analysis is the most probable one. In this paper we give an in-depth discussion of a data-oriented processing model which employs a corpus of labelled phrase-structure trees. Then we review some other models that instantiate the DOP approach. Many of these models also employ labelled phrase-structure trees, but use different criteria for extracting fragments from the corpus or employ different disambiguation strategies (Bod 1996b; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an 1995-96); other models use richer formalisms for their corpus annotations (van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod et al., 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Kaplan 1996; Tugwell 1995).

An Exceptional Cluster Algebra for Higgs plus Jet Production

Abstract:A recent evaluation of three-loop nonplanar Feynman integrals contributing to Higgs plus jet production has established their dependence on two novel symbol letters. We show that the resulting alphabet is described by a $G_2$ cluster algebra, enlarging the $C_2$ cluster algebra found to cover all previously known integrals relevant for this process. The cluster algebra connection we find reveals new adjacency relations, which significantly reduce the function space dimension of the non-planar triple ladder integral. These adjacencies may be understood in part by embedding $G_2$ inside higher-rank cluster algebras.

Abstract:We investigate a large class of $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric field theories in two dimensions, which contains the Murugan-Stanford-Witten model, and can be naturally regarded as a disordered generalization of the two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg models. We analyze the two and four-point functions of chiral superfields, and extract from them the central charge, the operator spectrum, and the chaos exponent in these models. Some of the models exhibit a conformal manifold parameterized by the variances of the random couplings. We compute the Zamolodchikov metrics on the conformal manifold, and demonstrate that the chaos exponent varies nontrivally along the conformal manifolds. Finally, we introduce and perform some preliminary analysis of a disordered generalization of the gauged linear sigma models, and discuss the low energy theories as ensemble averages of Calabi-Yau sigma models over complex structure moduli space.

Abstract:We consider the symplectic groupoid of pairs $(B,\mathbb{A})$ with $\mathbb A$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices and $B\in GL_n$ being such that $\widetilde {\mathbb A}=B{\mathbb A} B^{\text{T}}$ are also unipotent upper-triangular matrices. We explicitly solve this groupoid condition using Fock--Goncharov--Shen cluster variables and show that for $B$ satisfying the standard semiclassical Lie--Poisson algebra, the matrices $B$, $\mathbb A$, and $\widetilde{\mathbb A}$ satisfy the closed Poisson algebra relations expressible in the $r$-matrix form. Identifying entries of $\mathbb A$ and $\widetilde {\mathbb A}$ with geodesic functions for geodesics on the two halves of a closed Riemann surface of genus $g=n-1$ separated by the Markov element, we are able to construct the geodesic function $G_B$ ``dual'' to the Markov element. We thus obtain the complete cluster algebra description of Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{2,0}$ of genus two. We discuss also the generalization of our construction for higher genera. For genus larger than three we need a Hamiltonian reduction based on the rank condition $\hbox{rank\,}({\mathbb A}+{\mathbb A}^{\text{T}})\le 4$; we present the example of such a reduction for $\mathcal T_{4,0}$.

Cluster structures via representation theory: cluster ensembles, tropical duality, cluster characters and quantisation

Abstract:We develop a general theory of cluster categories, applying to a 2-Calabi-Yau extriangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ and cluster-tilting subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ satisfying only mild finiteness conditions. We show that the structure theory of $\mathcal{C}$ and the representation theory of $\mathcal{T}$ give rise to the rich combinatorial structures of seed data and cluster ensembles, via Grothendieck groups and homological algebra. We demonstrate that there is a natural dictionary relating cluster-tilting subcategories and their tilting theory to A-side tropical cluster combinatorics and, dually, relating modules over $\underline{\mathcal{T}}$ to the X-side; here $\underline{\mathcal{T}}$ is the image of $\mathcal{T}$ in the triangulated stable category of $\mathcal{C}$. Moreover, the exchange matrix associated to $\mathcal{T}$ arises from a natural map $p_{\mathcal{T}}\colon\mathrm{K}_0(\operatorname{mod}\underline{\mathcal{T}})\to\mathrm{K}_0(\mathcal{T})$ closely related to taking projective resolutions. Via our approach, we categorify many key identities involving mutation, g-vectors and c-vectors, including in infinite rank cases and in the presence of loops and 2-cycles. We are also able to define A- and X-cluster characters, which yield A- and X-cluster variables when there are no loops or 2-cycles, and which enable representation-theoretic proofs of cluster-theoretical statements. Continuing with the same categorical philosophy, we give a definition of a quantum cluster category, as a cluster category together with the choice of a map closely related to the adjoint of $p_{\mathcal{T}}$. Our framework enables us to show that any Hom-finite exact cluster category admits a canonical quantum structure, generalising results of Geiß--Leclerc--Schröer.

Anomalies and Dynamics in Strongly-Coupled Gauge Theories, New Criteria for Different Phases, and a Lesson from Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Abstract:We review recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories in four dimensions, problems which are potentially important in our quest to go beyond the standard $SU(3)_{QCD} \times (SU(2) \times U(1))_{GWS}$ model of the fundamental interactions. The generalized symmetries and associated new 't Hooft anomaly-matching constraints allow us to exclude, in a wide class of chiral gauge theories, confining vacuum with full flavor symmetries supported by a set of color-singlet massless composite fermions. The color-flavor-locked dynamical Higgs phase, dynamical Abelianization or more general symmetry breaking phase, appear as plausible IR dynamics, depending on the massless matter fermions present. We revisit and discuss critically several well-known confinement criteria in the literature, for both chiral and vectorlike gauge theories, and propose tentative, new criteria for discriminating different phases. Finally, we review an idea which might sound rather surprising at first, but is indeed realized in some softly-broken supersymmetric theories, that confinement in QCD is a small deformation (in the IR end of the renormalization-group flow) of a strongly-coupled, nonlocal, nonAbelian conformal fixed point.

Abstract:New examples of N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories are found as fixed points of SU(2) N=2 supersymmetric QCD. Relations among the scaling dimensions of their relevant chiral operators, global symmetries, and Higgs branches are understood in terms of the general structure of relevant deformations of non-trivial N=2 conformal field theories. The spectrum of scaling dimensions found are all those compatible with relevant deformations of a y^2 = x^3 singular curve.

Abstract:Following a recent publication, in this paper we count the number of independent operators at arbitrary mass dimension in $N=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories and derive their field and derivative content. This work uses Hilbert series machinery and extends a technique from our previous work on handling integration by parts redundancies to vector superfields. The method proposed here can be applied to both abelian and non-abelian gauge theories and for any set of (chiral/antichiral) matter fields. We work through detailed steps for the abelian case with single flavor chiral superfield at mass dimension eight, and provide other examples in the appendices.

Abstract:We show that the mass of a scalar field transforming in the fundamental of an $SU(N|N+1)$ supergroup internal symmetry is protected against one-loop corrections from quartic, gauge, and yukawa interactions. Although the negative-norm states responsible for this protection are likely fatal to a unitary interpretation of the theory, such ultraviolet insensitivity may open a new avenue to understanding the lightness of the Higgs.

Abstract:This is a review article on the quantum toroidal algebras, focusing on their roles in various solvable structures of 2d conformal field theory, supersymmetric gauge theory, and string theory. Using $\mathcal{W}$-algebras as our starting point, we elucidate the interconnection of affine Yangians, quantum toroidal algebras, and double affine Hecke algebras. Our exploration delves into the representation theory of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_1$ in full detail, highlighting its connections to partitions, $\mathcal{W}$-algebras, Macdonald functions, and the notion of intertwiners. Further, we also discuss integrable models constructed on Fock spaces and associated $\mathcal{R}$-matrices, both for the affine Yangian and the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_1$. The article then demonstrates how quantum toroidal algebras serve as a unifying algebraic framework that bridges different areas in physics. Notably, we cover topological string theory and supersymmetric gauge theories with eight supercharges, incorporating the AGT duality. Drawing upon the representation theory of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_1$, we provide a rather detailed review of its role in the algebraic formulations of topological vertex and $qq$-characters. Additionally, we briefly touch upon the corner vertex operator algebras and quiver quantum toroidal algebras.

The BPS Spectra of Gauge Theories in Two and Four Dimensions

Abstract:We study N=(2,2) supersymmetric abelian gauge theories in two dimensions. The exact BPS spectrum of these models is shown to coincide with the spectrum of massive hypermultiplets of certain N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions. A special case of these results involves a surprising connection between four-dimensional N=2 SQCD with N colours and N_{f}>N flavours at the root of the baryonic Higgs branch and the supersymmetric CP^{2N-N_{f}-1} sigma-model in two dimensions. This correspondence implies a new prediction for the strong-coupling spectrum of the four-dimensional theory.

Abstract:We explore the phases of N=1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter that arise as deformations of N=2 SQCD by the addition of a superpotential for the adjoint chiral multiplet. As the parameters in the superpotential are varied, the vacua of this theory sweep out various branches, which in some cases have multiple semiclassical limits. In such limits, we recover the vacua of various product gauge group theories, with flavors charged under some group factors. We describe in detail the structure of the vacua in both classical and quantum regimes, and develop general techniques such as an addition and a multiplication map which relate vacua of different gauge theories. We also consider possible indices characterizing different branches and potential relationships with matrix models.

Abstract:We continue the exploration of various appearances of cluster algebras in scattering amplitudes and related topics in physics. The cluster configuration spaces generalize the familiar moduli space ${\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ to finite-type cluster algebras. We study worldsheet-like variables, which for classical types have also appeared in the study of the symbol alphabet of Feynman integrals. We provide a systematic derivation of these variables from $Y$-systems, which allows us to express the dihedral coordinates in terms of them and to write the corresponding cluster string integrals in compact forms. We mainly focus on the $D_n$ type and show how to reach the boundaries of the configuration space, and write the saddle-point equations in terms of these variables. Moreover, these variables make it easier to study various topological properties of the space using a finite-field method. We propose conjectures about quasi-polynomial point count, dimensions of cohomology, and the number of saddle points for the $D_n$ space up to $n=10$, which greatly extend earlier results.
