Abstract:I perform an independent analysis of radio Doppler tracking data from the Pioneer 10 spacecraft for the time period 1987-1994. All of the tracking data were taken from public archive sources, and the analysis tools were developed independently by myself. I confirm that an apparent anomalous acceleration is acting on the Pioneer 10 spacecraft, which is not accounted for by present physical models of spacecraft navigation. My best fit value for the acceleration, including corrections for systematic biases and uncertainties, is (8.60 +/- 1.34) x 10^{-8} cm s^{-2}, directed towards the Sun. This value compares favorably to previous results. I examine the robustness of my result to various perturbations of the analysis method, and find agreement to within +/- 5%. The anomalous acceleration is reasonably constant with time, with a characteristic variation time scale of > 70 yr. Such a variation timescale is still too short to rule out on-board thermal radiation effects, based on this particular Pioneer 10 data set.

Abstract:During the last few years, a new approach to language processing has started to emerge, which has become known under various labels such as "data-oriented parsing", "corpus-based interpretation", and "tree-bank grammar" (cf. van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod 1992-96; Bod et al. 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Kaplan 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Scha 1990-92; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an et al. 1994; Sima'an 1995-96; Tugwell 1995). This approach, which we will call "data-oriented processing" or "DOP", embodies the assumption that human language perception and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences, rather than with abstract linguistic rules. The models that instantiate this approach therefore maintain large corpora of linguistic representations of previously occurring utterances. When processing a new input utterance, analyses of this utterance are constructed by combining fragments from the corpus; the occurrence-frequencies of the fragments are used to estimate which analysis is the most probable one. In this paper we give an in-depth discussion of a data-oriented processing model which employs a corpus of labelled phrase-structure trees. Then we review some other models that instantiate the DOP approach. Many of these models also employ labelled phrase-structure trees, but use different criteria for extracting fragments from the corpus or employ different disambiguation strategies (Bod 1996b; Charniak 1996a/b; Goodman 1996; Rajman 1995a/b; Sekine & Grishman 1995; Sima'an 1995-96); other models use richer formalisms for their corpus annotations (van den Berg et al. 1994; Bod et al., 1996a/b; Bonnema 1996; Kaplan 1996; Tugwell 1995).

Abstract:We construct a lattice formulation of a mass-deformed two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory with preserving two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations and SU(2)_R rotations. Due to the mass deformation, the lattice model is free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches, and flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized giving discrete minima representing fuzzy S^2. Around the trivial minimum, quantum continuum theory is obtained with no tuning, which serves a nonperturbative construction of the IIA matrix string theory. Moreover, around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres, four-dimensional N=4 U(k) super Yang-Mills theory with two commutative and two noncommutative directions emerges. In this theory, sixteen supersymmetries are broken by the mass deformation to two. Assuming the breaking is soft, we give a scenario leading to undeformed N=4 super Yang-Mills on R^4 without any fine tuning. As an evidence for the validity of the assumption, some computation of 1-loop radiative corrections is presented.

Abstract:We reexamine the question of quantum consistency of supergravities in eight dimensions. Theories with 16 supercharges suffer from the anomalies under the action of its discrete modular groups. In minimally supersymmetric theory coupled to Yang-Mills multiples of rank l with the moduli space given by SO(2, l )/(U(1) × SO( l )), the existence of a counterterm together with the requirement that its poles and zeros correspond to the gauge symmetry enhancement imposes nontrivial constraints on the lattice. The counterterms needed for anomaly cancellation for all cases, that are believed to lead to consistent theories of quantum gravity ( l = 2, 10, 18), are discussed.

Spinorial Superspaces and Super Yang-Mills Theories

Abstract:In physics literature about supersymmetry, many authors refer to \emph{super Minkowski spaces}. These spaces are affine supermanifolds with certain distinguished spin structures. In these notes, we make the notion of such spin structures precise and generalise the setup to curved supermanifolds. This leads to the more general notion of \emph{spinorial superspaces}. By working in a suitable geometric and coordinate-free setting, many explicit coordinate computations appearing in physics literature can be replaced by more conceptual methods. As an application of the rather general framework of spinorial superspaces, we formulate $\mathcal N = 1$ super Yang-Mills theories on curved superspaces of spacetime dimensions $d=3$ and $d=4$ and show how to reduce the theory to field theories defined on an underlying ordinary spacetime manifold.

Abstract:We study theories with 16 supercharges and a discrete energy spectrum. One class of theories has symmetry group $SU(2|4)$. They arise as truncations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. They include the plane-wave matrix model, $2+1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{2}$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $R\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{3}/{Z}_{k}$. We explain how to obtain their gravity duals in a unified way. We explore the regions of the geometry that are relevant for the study of some $1/2$ BPS and near BPS states. This leads to a class of two dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric sigma models with nonzero $H$ flux, including a massive deformed WZW model. We show how to match some features of the string spectrum with the Yang-Mills theory. The other class of theories are also connected to $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and arise by making some of the transverse scalars compact. Their vacua are characterized by a 2D Yang-Mills theory or 3D Chern-Simons theory. These theories realize peculiar super-Poincar\'e symmetry algebras in $2+1$ or $1+1$ dimensions with ``noncentral'' charges. We finally discuss gravity duals of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathrm{AdS}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{S}^{1}$.

Abstract:Maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory (N=4 SYM) is conformal for any value of the coupling. Lattice regularization breaks conformality through the introduction of a non-zero lattice spacing and a finite lattice volume. This proceedings presents ongoing numerical computations of conformal scaling dimensions in lattice N=4 SYM, based on a lattice formulation that exactly preserves a supersymmetry sub-algebra at non-zero lattice spacing. The main targets are the non-trivial anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator, as well as a mass anomalous dimension extracted from the eigenvalue mode number of the fermion operator. The latter is expected to vanish in the conformal continuum theory, providing insight into the interplay of lattice discretization and conformality.

This is completed after the lesson learned from D(14.1) (arXiv:1808.05011 [math.DG]) and the notion of `$d=3+1$, $N=1$ towered superspaces' as complexified ${\Bbb Z}/2$-graded $C^\infty$-schemes, their distinguished sectors, and purge-evaluation maps first developed in SUSY(1) (= D(14.1.Supp.1)) (arXiv:1902.06246 [hep-th]) and further polished in the current work. On Five-dimensional Superspaces

Abstract:Recent one-loop calculations of certain supergravity-mediated quantum corrections in supersymmetric brane-world models employ either the component formulation (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0305184" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0305184">hep-th/0305184</a>) or the superfield formalism with only half of the bulk supersymmetry manifestly realized (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0305169" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0305169">hep-th/0305169</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0411216" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0411216">hep-th/0411216</a>). There are reasons to expect, however, that 5D supergraphs provide a more efficient setup to deal with these and more involved (in particular, higher-loop) calculations. As a first step toward elaborating such supergraph techniques, we develop in this letter a manifestly supersymmetric formulation for 5D globally supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges. Simple rules are given to reduce 5D superspace actions to a hybrid form which keeps manifest only the 4D, N=1 Poincare supersymmetry. (Previously, such hybrid actions were carefully worked out by rewriting the component actions in terms of simple superfields). To demonstrate the power of this formalism for model building applications, two families of off-shell supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models in five dimensions are presented (including those with cotangent bundles of Kahler manifolds as target spaces). We elaborate, trying to make our presentation maximally clear and self-contained, on the techniques of 5D harmonic and projective superspaces used at some stages in this letter.

Abstract:A topological theory for euclidean gravity in eight dimensions is built by enforcing octonionic self-duality conditions on the spin connection. The eight-dimensional manifold must be of a special type, with G_2 or Spin(7) holonomy. The resulting theory is related to a twisted version of N=1, D=8 supergravity. The situation is comparable to that of the topological Yang--Mills theory in eight dimensions, for which the SO(8) invariance is broken down to Spin(7), but is recovered after untwisting the topological theory.

Abstract:We construct nearly topological Yang-Mills theories on eight dimensional manifolds with a special holonomy group. These manifolds are the Joyce manifold with $Spin(7)$ holonomy and the Calabi-Yau manifold with SU(4) holonomy. An invariant closed four form $T_{\mu\nu\rho\sigma}$ on the manifold allows us to define an analogue of the instanton equation, which serves as a topological gauge fixing condition in BRST formalism. The model on the Joyce manifold is related to the eight dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Topological dimensional reduction to four dimensions gives non-abelian Seiberg-Witten equation.

Abstract:We present ongoing investigations of maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills ($Q = 16$ SYM) theory in three space-time dimensions. At low temperatures and large $N$ this theory is related to black branes in higher-dimensional quantum gravity. Building on previous work that focused on the homogeneous `D2' phase of the theory, we are now exploring phase transitions between this D2 phase and the localized `D0' phase.

Generalized Symmetries of Non-Supersymmetric Orbifolds

Abstract:We determine generalized symmetries for 4D theories engineered via type II strings on non-supersymmetric orbifold backgrounds $\mathbb{R}^{3,1} \times \mathbb{R}^6 / \Gamma$. Probe branes detect generalized symmetries via the adjacency matrix for fermionic degrees of freedom in an associated quiver gauge theory. In situations where the tachyons are sequestered away from the boundary $S^5 / \Gamma$, this exactly matches the result extracted from singular homology. In situations with an unsequestered tachyon which stretches out to the boundary, the presence of tachyonic pulses partitions up the space into several distinct sectors, and the net contribution again matches with the answer expected via quiver methods. For IIA backgrounds, the presence of a localized closed string tachyon leads to transitions in the spectrum of states, generalized symmetries, higher-group symmetries, as well as the level matrix of the associated symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). For IIB backgrounds with a stack of spacetime filling probe D3-branes, the onset of a radiatively generated potential leads to similar considerations involving scale dependent transitions in the symmetries of the theory, including structures such as duality defects / interfaces.

Abstract:We discuss general aspects of charge conjugation symmetry in Euclidean lattice field theories, including its dynamical gauging. Our main focus is $O(2) = U(1)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2 $ gauge theory, which we construct using a non-abelian generalization of the Villain formulation via gauging the charge conjugation symmetry of pure $U(1)$ gauge theory. We describe how to construct gauge-invariant non-local operators in a theory with gauged charge conjugation symmetry, and use it to define Wilson and 't Hooft lines as well as non-invertible symmetry operators. Our lattice discretization preserves the higher-group and non-invertible symmetries of $O(2)$ gauge theory, which we explore in detail. In particular, these symmetries give rise to selection rules for extended operators and their junctions, and constrain the properties of the worldvolume degrees of freedom on twist vortices (also known as Alice or Cheshire strings). We propose a phase diagram of the theory coupled to dynamical magnetic monopoles and twist vortices, where the various generalized symmetries are typically only emergent.

Abstract:We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation. The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models. Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)

The role of Sp(2n) duality in quantum theory

Abstract:D-dimensional maximal supergravities type I with G/H coset spaces have global G-symmetry and local H symmetry, which can be gauge-fixed in symmetric or Iwasawa-type gauges. Maximal D-dimensional supergravities type II derived from higher dimensions without dualization have less local and global symmetries. In 4D, Gaillard-Zumino duality group Sp(56) enhances U-duality symmetry group $E_{7(7)}$. Using the Hamiltonian path integral, we show how extra symmetries beyond $E_{7(7)}$, serve to establish S-matrix equivalence of supergravities I and II in different gauges. Enhanced dualities are not available in D $> 4$. This is consistent with the existence of local H symmetry and global G symmetry anomalies and UV divergences in D $> 4$ supergravities, and with the absence of these anomalies and UV divergences, so far, in 4D ${\cal N}\geq 5$ supergravities.

Abstract:Supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions have taught us many important physics lessons. These can both inform and be informed by future work on the lattice. I focus on three issues: the properties of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and its relation to the non-supersymmetric case; the properties of gauge theories with matter and their relation to real QCD; and, briefly, the recent discovery that gauge theories and string theories are more deeply connected than ever previously realized. Specific questions for lattice gauge theorists to consider are raised in the context of the first two topics.

Abstract:A brief review of the harmonic superspace approach to the construction of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric higher spin theories is given. We define off-shell analytic harmonic gauge potentials of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric higher-spin multiplets and of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal higher-spin multiplets for an arbitrary integer highest spin. The component contents of these $\mathcal{N}=2$ higher-spin supermultiplets are explicitly presented. We also construct their cubic couplings to the hypermultiplet. This short report summarizes the basic results of the series of published papers [1-3] as well as announces those of the forthcoming article [4].
