Abstract:The next step in nanotechnology is to establish a methodology to assemble new functional materials based on the knowledge of nanotechnology. This task is undertaken by nanoarchitectonics. In nanoarchitectonics, we architect functional material systems from nanounits such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. In terms of the hierarchy of the structure and the harmonization of the function, the material created by nanoarchitectonics has similar characteristics to the organization of the functional structure in biosystems. Looking at actual biofunctional systems, dynamic properties and interfacial environments are key. In other words, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces is important for the production of bio-like highly functional materials systems. In this review paper, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces will be discussed, looking at recent typical examples. In particular, the basic topics of "molecular manipulation, arrangement, and assembly" and "material production" will be discussed in the first two sections. Then, in the following section, "fullerene assembly: from zero-dimensional unit to advanced materials", we will discuss how various functional structures can be created from the very basic nanounit, the fullerene. The above examples demonstrate the versatile possibilities of architectonics at dynamic interfaces. In the last section, these tendencies will be summarized, and future directions will be discussed.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has advanced the techniques for elucidating phenomena at the atomic, molecular, and nano-level. As a post nanotechnology concept, nanoarchitectonics has emerged to create functional materials from unit structures. Consider the material function when nanoarchitectonics enables the design of materials whose internal structure is controlled at the nanometer level. Material function is determined by two elements. These are the functional unit that forms the core of the function and the environment (matrix) that surrounds it. This review paper discusses the nanoarchitectonics of confined space, which is a field for controlling functional materials and molecular machines. The first few sections introduce some of the various dynamic functions in confined spaces, considering molecular space, materials space, and biospace. In the latter two sections, examples of research on the behavior of molecular machines, such as molecular motors, in confined spaces are discussed. In particular, surface space and internal nanospace are taken up as typical examples of confined space. What these examples show is that not only the central functional unit, but also the surrounding spatial configuration is necessary for higher functional expression. Nanoarchitectonics will play important roles in the architecture of such a total system.

Abstract:Advances in nanotechnology have made it possible to observe and evaluate structures down to the atomic and molecular level. The next step in the development of functional materials is to apply the knowledge of nanotechnology to materials sciences. This is the role of nanoarchitectonics, which is a concept of post-nanotechnology. Nanoarchitectonics is defined as a methodology to create functional materials using nanounits such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials as building blocks. Nanoarchitectonics is very general and is not limited to materials or applications, and thus nanoarchitecture is applied in many fields. In particular, in the evolution from nanotechnology to nanoarchitecture, it is useful to consider the contribution of nanoarchitecture in device applications. There may be a solution to the widely recognized problem of integrating top-down and bottom-up approaches in the design of functional systems. With this in mind, this review discusses examples of nanoarchitectonics in developments of advanced devices. Some recent examples are introduced through broadly dividing them into organic molecular nanoarchitectonics and inorganic materials nanoarchitectonics. Examples of organic molecular nanoarchitecture include a variety of control structural elements, such as π-conjugated structures, chemical structures of complex ligands, steric hindrance effects, molecular stacking, isomerization and color changes due to external stimuli, selective control of redox reactions, and doping control of organic semiconductors by electron transfer reactions. Supramolecular chemical processes such as association and intercalation of organic molecules are also important in controlling device properties. The nanoarchitectonics of inorganic materials often allows for control of size, dimension, and shape, and their associated physical properties can also be controlled. In addition, there are specific groups of materials that are suitable for practical use, such as nanoparticles and graphene. Therefore, nanoarchitecture of inorganic materials also has a more practical aspect. Based on these aspects, this review finally considers the future of materials nanoarchitectonics for further advanced devices.

Abstract:It has become clear that superior material functions are derived from precisely controlled nanostructures. This has been greatly accelerated by the development of nanotechnology. The next step is to assemble materials with knowledge of their nano-level structures. This task is assigned to the post-nanotechnology concept of nanoarchitectonics. However, nanoarchitectonics, which creates intricate three-dimensional functional structures, is not always easy. Two-dimensional nanoarchitectonics based on reactions and arrangements at the surface may be an easier target to tackle. A better methodology would be to define a two-dimensional structure and then develop it into a three-dimensional structure and function. According to these backgrounds, this review paper is organized as follows. The introduction is followed by a summary of the three issues; (i) 2D to 3D dynamic structure control: liquid crystal commanded by the surface, (ii) 2D to 3D rational construction: a metal–organic framework (MOF) and a covalent organic framework (COF); (iii) 2D to 3D functional amplification: cells regulated by the surface. In addition, this review summarizes the important aspects of the ultimate three-dimensional nanoarchitectonics as a perspective. The goal of this paper is to establish an integrated concept of functional material creation by reconsidering various reported cases from the viewpoint of nanoarchitectonics, where nanoarchitectonics can be regarded as a method for everything in materials science.

Abstract:Like the proposal of nanotechnology by Richard Feynman, the nanoarchitectonics concept was initially proposed by Masakazu Aono. The nanoarchitectonics strategy conceptually fuses nanotechnology with other research fields including organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, micro/nanofabrication, materials science, and bio-related sciences, and aims to produce functional materials from nanoscale components. In this review article, bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics and two-dimensional materials and environments are discussed as a selected topic. The account gives general examples of nanoarchitectonics of two-dimensional materials for energy storage, catalysis, and biomedical applications, followed by explanations of bio-related applications with two-dimensional materials such as two-dimensional biomimetic nanosheets, fullerene nanosheets, and two-dimensional assemblies of one-dimensional fullerene nanowhiskers (FNWs). The discussion on bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics in two-dimensional environments further extends to liquid–liquid interfaces such as fluorocarbon–medium interfaces and viscous liquid interfaces as new frontiers of two-dimensional environments for bio-related applications. Controlling differentiation of stem cells at fluidic liquid interfaces is also discussed. Finally, a conclusive section briefly summarizes features of bio-interactive nanoarchitectonics with two-dimensional materials and environments and discusses possible future perspectives.Graphical

Abstract:Nanoarchitectonics, as a post-nanotechnology concept, constructs functional materials and structures using nanounits of atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials as materials. With the concept of nanoarchitectonics, asymmetric structures, and hierarchical organization, rather than mere assembly and organization of structures, can be produced, where rational physical and chemical communications will lead to the development of more advanced functional materials. Layer-by-layer assembly can be a powerful tool for this purpose, as exemplified in this feature paper. This feature article explores the possibility of constructing advanced functional systems based on recent examples of layer-by-layer assembly. We will illustrate both the development of more basic methods and more advanced nanoarchitectonics systems aiming to practical applications. Specifically, the following sections will provide examples of (i) advancement in basics and methods, (ii) physico-chemical aspects and applications, (iii) bio-chemical aspects and applications, and (iv) bio-medical applications. It can be concluded that materials nanoarchitectonics based on layer-by-layer assembly is a useful method for assembling asymmetric structures and hierarchical organization, and is a powerful technique for developing functions through physical and chemical communications.

Abstract:Lateral nanoarchitectonics is a method of precisely designing functional materials from atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials (so-called, nanounits) in two-dimensional (2D) space using knowledge of nanotechnology. Similar strategies can be seen in biological systems; in particular, biological membranes ingeniously arrange and organise functional units within a single layer of units to create powerful systems for photosynthesis or signal transduction and others. When our major lateral nanoarchitectural approaches such as layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are compared with biological membranes, one finds that lateral nanoarchitectonics has a potential to become a powerful tool for designing advanced functional nanoscaled systems, however, it is still rather not well-developed with a great deal of unexplored possibilities. Based on such a discussion, this review article examines the current status of lateral nanoarchitectonics from the perspective of in-plane functional structure organisation at different scales. These include the extension of functions at the molecular level by on-surface synthesis, monolayers at the air-water interface, 2D molecular patterning, supramolecular polymers, macroscopic manipulation and functionality of molecular machines, among others. In many systems, we have found that while the targets are very attractive, the research is still in its infancy, and many challenges remain. Therefore, it is important to look at the big picture from different perspectives in such a comprehensive review. This review article will provide such an opportunity and help us set a direction for lateral nanotechnology toward more advanced functional organization.

Abstract:The world of biology created a wealth of complex materials intertwining order, disorder, and hierarchy. They are produced with minimal energy expenditures and display combinations of properties that surpass materials aimed to be perfectly ordered crystals or perfectly disordered glasses. De novo engineering of biomimetic materials with "impossible" combination of properties necessary for multiple technologies becomes possible considering complexity as a design parameter but this methodology lacks foundational principles. This article delineates the concept of complexity in the context of materials science. It examines the pathway to quantitative complexity–functionality relations and explores pragmatic approaches to scalable complex materials guided by discrete mathematics of nanoassemblies from imperfect components.

Abstract:Along with nanoscience advances, nanoarchitectonics have emerged as novel nanomaterials, with self-assembled arrangement of atoms and interesting properties. Hence, nanoarchitectonics could be applied to several fields, such as sensing, catalysis, water and wastewater treatment, fuel cells, solar energy storage, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery. Some examples of nanoarchitectonics are self-assembled lipids, montmorillonite, sulfur-based surfactant/cyclodextrin complexes, hierarchical and conventional nanozeolites, metallic-organic frameworks, and smart polymers. Despite the features of nanoarchitectonics, the synthesis routes and underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, being characterized as a challenge in the field. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to handle these challenges and to estimate physiochemical properties of nanoarchitectonics. Among the AI branches, machine learning (ML) methods, which include deep learning (DL), have been used either during the design of nanoarchitectonics or to predict specific thermal/physical/chemical properties of nanomaterials. Therefore, AI has been playing a great role in developing nanomaterials derived from nanoarchitectonics and, thus, with enhanced physiochemical properties. Then, AI could also be a promising tool during the scale-up modeling of nanoarchitectonics.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has elucidated scientific phenomena of various materials at the nano-level. The next step in materials developments is to build up materials, especially condensed matter, based on such nanotechnology-based knowledge. Nanoarchitectonics can be regarded as a post-nanotechnology concept. In nanoarchitectonics, functional material systems are architected from nanounits. Here, this review would like to focus on layered structures in terms of structure formation. The unit structures of layered structures are mostly two-dimensional materials or thin-film materials. They are attractive materials that have attracted much attention in modern condensed matter science. By organizing them into layered structures, we can expect to develop functions based on communication between the layers. Building up layered functional structures by assembling nano-layers of units is a typical approach in nanoarchitectonics. The discussion will be divided into the following categories: hard matter, hybrid, soft matter, and living object. For each target, several recent research examples will be given to illustrate the discussion. This paper will extract what aspects are considered important in the creation of the layered structure of each component. Layering strategies need to be adapted to the characteristics of the components. The type of structural precision and functionality required is highly dependent on the flexibility and mobility of the component. Furthermore, what is needed to develop the nanoarchitectonics of layered structures is discussedas future perspectives.

Abstract:A material's properties are derived from its constituent material composition and its structural hierarchy across length scales down to the nanometer level. At submicron length scales, materials exhibit unique size-affected mechanical properties such as enhanced strength, ductility, and flaw tolerance, but these are generally lost in bulk materials. Emerging fabrication methods have enabled the creation of materials with controllable architectures down to the nanoscale. These micro- and nanoarchitected materials utilize both resilient architectures and size-affected constituent materials to achieve unprecedented mechanical properties such as ultrahigh strength at low density, recoverability after large applied strains in intrinsically brittle materials, and metamaterial properties such as chirality and negative static compressibility. In this article, we describe the governing principles behind these materials and outline recent progress in the field. We unravel the details of the deformation and failure processes to facilitate a fundamental understanding of effective materials properties and provide a guideline for the design of the next generation of nanoarchitected materials.

Abstract:The science of self-assembly has undergone a radical shift from asking questions about why individual components self-organize into ordered structures, to manipulating the resultant order. However, the quest for far-reaching nanomanufacturing requires addressing an even more challenging question: how to form nanoparticle (NP) structures with designed architectures without explicitly prescribing particle positions. Here we report an assembly concept in which building instructions are embedded into NPs via DNA frames. The integration of NPs and DNA origami frames enables the fabrication of NPs with designed anisotropic and selective interactions. Using a pre-defined set of different DNA-framed NPs, we show it is possible to design diverse planar architectures, which include periodic structures and shaped meso-objects that spontaneously emerge on mixing of the different topological types of NP. Even objects of non-trivial shapes, such as a nanoscale model of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man , can be self-assembled successfully.

Abstract:We introduce a simplified and modular architecture for design and construction of complex origami nanostructures. A series of basic two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures are presented. As the resulting structures can be virtually divided into blocks, modular remodeling such as translocation, contraction/extension, and bending is carried out. Structures under such a designing framework are morphable. Local conformational changes can propagate to the entire structure to reshape the global conformation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) functional systems with sizes in the micro- and nanometer regime are of growing importance across a wide range of electrical, optical, and biological contexts. The unique functionalities of such platforms follow from engineering the shapes, geometries, and architectures of materials into 3D layouts. The main challenges are in developing techniques/methods with sufficient levels of resolution and with broad materials compatibility .The most successful routes include (1) top-down schemes that involve masking and selective material removal, often in repetitive sequences, (2) bottom-up strategies that rely on component assembly or materials deposition, (3) two-dimensional (2D) to 3D shape transformations triggered by internal forces or external stimuli, and more recently, (4) mechanically guided assembly driven by substrate deformations. This review highlights recent progress in these areas, with a focus on techniques with demonstrated capabilities in constructing functional 3D structures and/or devices with key dimensions in the nanoscopic regime, and on their demonstrated or potential applications. Abstract:As a single layer of graphite, graphene has been widely explored for its potential applications in many fields, such as electronics, energy storage, sensors, actuators, and composite materials. To achieve these purposes, assembling graphene nanosheets into macroscale bulk is indispensable. However, the prepared graphene materials at macroscale generally demonstrated a much lower performance in comparison to individual graphene nanosheets. Recently, great interest has been focused on the fabrication of graphene nanoarchitectonics, for the excellent properties of graphene at microscale are approaching at macroscale. During the fabrication process, four forms of driving forces are involved, including Van der Waals force, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds as well as covalent bonds. In this feature article, we review the recent progress in 3D graphene architectures. This review highlights in materials’ properties rather than the morphology and processing methodology, as understanding the relationship between the assembly driving force and the performance of bulk materials. This review would be beneficial to the design of new graphene nanoarchitectonics and achieve graphene-based materials with high performance.
