Abstract:We have calculated the incident photon power density P_2 for which the two-step induced emission rate from an isomeric nucleus becomes equal to the natural isomeric decay rate. We have analyzed two-step transitions for isomeric nuclei with a half-life greater than 10 min, for which there is an intermediate state of known energy, spin and half-life, for which the intermediate state is connected by a known gamma-ray transition to the isomeric state and to at least another intermediate state, and for which the relative intensities of the transitions to lower states are known. For the isomeric nucleus 166m-Ho, which has a 1200 y isomeric state at 5.98 keV, we have found a value of P_2=6.3 x 10^7 W cm^{-2}, the intermediate state being the 263.8 keV level. We have found power densities P_2 of the order of 10^{10} W cm^{-2} for several other isomeric nuclei.

Abstract:Some modified two-slit interference experiments claim to demonstrate a violation of Bohr's complementarity principle. A typical such experiment is theoretically analyzed using wave-packet dynamics. The flaw in the analysis of such experiments is pointed out and it is demonstrated that they do not violate complementarity. In addition, it is quite generally proved that if the state of a particle is such that the modulus square of the wave-function yields an interference pattern, then it necessarily loses which-path information.

Recently, the uncertaintyprinciple in terms of entropy has been extended to the case involving quantumentanglement. With previously obtained quantum information for the particle ofinterest, the outcomes of both non-commuting observables can be predictedprecisely, which greatly generalises the uncertainty relation. Here, weexperimentally investigated the entanglement-assisted entropic uncertaintyprinciple for an entirely optical setup. Violation of the principle of Complementarity, and its implications

Abstract:Bohr's principle of complementarity predicts that in a welcher weg ("which-way") experiment, obtaining fully visible interference pattern should lead to the destruction of the path knowledge. Here I report a failure for this prediction in an optical interferometry experiment. Coherent laser light is passed through a dual pinhole and allowed to go through a converging lens, which forms well-resolved images of the respective pinholes, providing complete path knowledge. A series of thin wires are then placed at previously measured positions corresponding to the dark fringes of the interference pattern upstream of the lens. No reduction in the resolution and total radiant flux of either image is found in direct disagreement with the predictions of the principle of complementarity. In this paper, a critique of the current measurement theory is offered, and a novel nonperturbative technique for ensemble properties is introduced. Also, another version of this experiment without an imaging lens is suggested, and some of the implications of the violation of complementarity for another suggested experiment to investigate the nature of the photon and its "empty wave" is briefly discussed.

Abstract:We show how a number of well-known uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform, such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle, and Meshulam’s nonabelian uncertainty principle, have little to do with the structure of the Fourier transform itself. Rather, all of these results follow from very weak properties of the Fourier transform (shared by numerous linear operators), namely that it is bounded as an operator L1→L∞L^1 \rightarrow L^\infty, and that it is unitary. Using a single, simple proof template, and only these (or weaker) properties, we obtain some new proofs and many generalizations of these basic uncertainty principles, to new operators and to new settings, in a completely unified way. Together with our general overview, this paper can also serve as a survey of the many facets of the phenomena known as uncertainty principles.

Abstract:We present a unified approach, based on the use of quantum uncertainty relations, for arriving at criteria for the demonstration of the EPR paradox and macroscopic superpositions. We suggest to view each criterion as a means to demonstrate an EPR-type paradox, where there is an inconsistency between the assumptions of a form of realism, either macroscopic realism (MR) or local realism (LR), and the completeness of quantum mechanics.

An Updated Quantum Complementarity Principle

Abstract:Bohr's complementarity principle has long been a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics, positing that, within a given experimental setup, a quantum system (or quanton) can exhibit either its wave-like character, denoted as $W$, or its particle-like character, denoted as $P$, but not both simultaneously. Modern interpretations of Bohr's complementarity principle acknowledge the coexistence of these aspects in the same experiment while introducing the constraint $W + P \le \alpha$. Notably, estimations of $W$ or $P$ frequently rely on indirect retrodiction methods, a practice that has led to the claim of the violation of Bohr's complementarity principle. By taking a different route, recent advancements demonstrate that quantum complementarity relations can be rigorously derived from the axioms of quantum mechanics. To reconcile these observations and eliminate potential paradoxes or violations, we propose an updated formulation for the quantum complementarity principle, which is stated as follows: \textit{For a given quantum state preparation $\rho_t$ at a specific instant of time $t$, the wave and particle behaviors of a quanton are constrained by a complementarity relation $\mf{W}(\rho_t) + \mf{P}(\rho_t) \le \alpha(d)$, which is derived directly from the axioms of quantum mechanics.}

Abstract:We develop a unified, information theoretic interpretation of the number-phase complementarity that is applicable both to finite-dimensional (atomic) and infinite-dimensional (oscillator) systems. The relevant uncertainty principle is obtained as a lower bound on {\it entropy excess}, the difference between number entropy and phase knowledge, the latter defined as the relative entropy with respect to the uniform distribution.

Abstract:In terms of operator, the two complementary quantities, the predictability and visibility, are reinvestigated in a two-way interferometer. One Hermitian operator and one non-Hermitian operator (composed of two Hermitian operators) are introduced for the predictability and visibility, respectively. The predictability and visibility can not be measured exactly simultaneously, due to the non-commutation between the two operators. The sum of the variances of the predictability and visibility (the total variance), is used to measure the uncertainty, which is linked to the complementarity relation through the equation, $(\delta_P)^2+(\delta_Vf)^2+P^2+V^2=2$ . This new description for the predictability and visibility connects the complementarity and the uncertainty relations, although neither of them can be derived directly from the other.

Abstract:One of the most remarkable features of quantum physics is that attributes of quantum objects, such as the wave-like and particle-like behaviors of single photons, can be complementary in the sense that they are equally real but cannot be observed simultaneously. Quantum measurements, serving as windows providing views into the abstract edifice of quantum theory, are basic tools for manifesting the intrinsic behaviors of quantum objects. However, quantitative formulation of complementarity that highlights its manifestations in sophisticated measurements remains elusive. Here we develop a general framework for demonstrating quantum complementarity in the form of information exclusion relations (IERs), which incorporates the wave-particle duality relations as particular examples. Moreover, we explore the applications of our theory in entanglement witnessing and elucidate that our IERs lead to an extended form of entropic uncertainty relations, providing intriguing insights into the connection between quantum complementarity and the preparation uncertainty.

Abstract:At the heart of the black hole information loss paradox and the firewall controversy lies the conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity. Much has been said about quantum corrections to general relativity, but much less in the opposite direction. It is therefore crucial to examine possible corrections to quantum mechanics due to gravity. Indeed, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is one profound feature of quantum mechanics, which nevertheless may receive correction when gravitational effects become important. Such generalized uncertainty principle [GUP] has been motivated from not only quite general considerations of quantum mechanics and gravity, but also string theoretic arguments. We examine the role of GUP in the context of black hole complementarity. We find that while complementarity can be violated by large N rescaling if one assumes only the Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, the application of GUP may save complementarity, but only if certain N -dependence is also assumed. This raises two important questions beyond the scope of this work, i.e., whether GUP really has the proposed form of N -dependence, and whether black hole complementarity is indeed correct.

Abstract:We propose an uncertainty-complementarity balance relation and build quantitative connections among non-locality, complementarity, and uncertainty. Our balance relation, which is formulated in a theory-independent manner, states that for two measurements performed sequentially, the complementarity demonstrated in the first measurement in terms of disturbance is no greater than the uncertainty of the first measurement. Quantum theory respects our balance relation, from which the Tsirelson bound can be derived, up to an inessential assumption. In the simplest Bell scenario, we show that the bound of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for a general non-local theory can be expressed as a function of the balance strength, a constance for the given theory. As an application, we derive the balance strength as well as the nonlocal bound of Popescu-Rohrlich box. Our results shed light on quantitative connections among three fundamental concepts, i.e., uncertainty, complementarity and non-locality.
Unveiling quantum complementarity tradeoffs in relativistic scenarios

Abstract:Complementarity plays a pivotal role in understanding a diverse range of quantum phenomena. Here, we show how the tradeoff between quantities of a complete complementarity relation is modified in an arbitrary spacetime for a particle with an internal spin. This effect stems from local Wigner rotations in the spacetime, which couple the spin to the system's external degrees of freedom. To conduct our study, we utilize two generalized delayed-choice interferometers. Despite differences in complementarity tradeoffs inside the interferometers, the interferometric visibility of both setups coincides in any relativistic regime. Our results extend the finding that general relativity induces a universal decoherence effect on quantum superpositions, as local Wigner rotations, being purely kinematical, preclude any spin dynamics. To illustrate, we analyze the Newtonian limit of our results.

Quantum complementarity: A novel resource for unambiguous exclusion and encryption

Abstract:Complementarity is a phenomenon explaining several core features of quantum theory, such as the well-known uncertainty principle. Roughly speaking, two objects are said to be complementary if being certain about one of them necessarily forbids useful knowledge about the other. Two quantum measurements that do not commute form an example of complementary measurements, and this phenomenon can also be defined for ensembles of states. Although a key quantum feature, it is unclear whether complementarity can be understood more operationally, as a necessary resource in some quantum information task. Here we show this is the case, and relates to a novel task which we term $\eta$-unambiguous exclusion. As well as giving complementarity a clear operational definition, this also uncovers the foundational underpinning of unambiguous exclusion tasks for the first time. We further show that a special type of measurement complementarity is equivalent to advantages in certain encryption tasks. Finally, our analysis suggest that complementarity of measurement and state ensemble can be interpreted as strong forms of measurement incompatibility and quantum steering, respectively.

Abstract:Bohr's principle of complementarity (BPC) is the cornerstone of quantum mechanics. According to this principle, the total wavelike and particlelike information of a particle is limited by the Englert-Greenberger (EG) duality relation. Here, by introducing a quantum detecting device into the experiment, we find that the limit of the EG duality relation is exceeded because of the interference between the wave and particle properties of the photon. A generalized EG duality relation is further developed. Our work provides a generalization of BPC and gives new insights into quantum mechanics.
On Wigdersons' approach to the uncertainty principle

Abstract:We revisit the uncertainty principle from the point of view suggested by A. Wigderson and Y. Wigderson. This approach is based on a primary uncertainty principle from which one can derive several inequalities expressing the impossibility of a simultaneous sharp localization in time and frequency. Moreover, it requires no specific properties of the Fourier transform and can therefore be easily applied to all operators satisfying the primary uncertainty principle. A. Wigderson and Y. Wigderson also suggested many generalizations to higher dimensions and stated several conjectures which we address in the present paper. We argue that we have to consider a more general primary uncertainty principle to prove the results suggested by the authors. As a by-product we obtain some new inequalities akin to the Cowling-Price uncertainty principle and derive the entropic uncertainty principle from the primary uncertainty principles.

Abstract:Wave-particle duality is one of the most striking and counter-intuitive features of quantum mechanics, illustrating that two incompatible observables cannot be measured simultaneously with arbitrary precision. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the equivalence of wave-particle duality and entropic uncertainty relations using orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light. Our experiment utilizes an innovative and reconfigurable platform composed of few-mode optical fibers and photonic lanterns, showcasing the versatility of this technology for quantum information processing. Our results provide fundamental insights into the complementarity principle from an informational perspective, with implications for the broader field of quantum technologies.
