Abstract:This paper is generally concerned with understanding how the uncertainty principle arises in formulations of quantum mechanics, such as the decoherent histories approach, whose central goal is the assignment of probabilities to histories. We first consider histories characterized by position or momentum projections at two moments of time. Both exact and approximate (Gaussian) projections are studied. Shannon information is used as a measure of the uncertainty expressed in the probabilities for these histories. We derive a number of inequalities in which the uncertainty principle is expressed as a lower bound on the information of phase space distributions derived from the probabilities for two-time histories. We go on to consider histories characterized by position samplings at $n$ moments of time. We derive a lower bound on the information of the joint probability for $n$ position samplings. Similar bounds are derived for histories characterized by samplings of other variables. All lower bounds on the information of histories have the general form $\ln \left( V_H / V_S \right) $, where $V_H$ is a volume element of history space, which we define, and $V_S$ is the volume of that space probed by the projections. We thus obtain a concise and general form of the uncertainty principle referring directly to the histories description of the system, and making no reference to notions of phase space.

Abstract:One of the most widely known building blocks of modern physics is Heisenberg's indeterminacy principle. Among the different statements of this fundamental property of the full quantum mechanical nature of physical reality, the uncertainty relation for energy and time has a special place. Its interpretation and its consequences have inspired continued research efforts for almost a century. In its modern formulation, the uncertainty relation is understood as setting a fundamental bound on how fast any quantum system can evolve. In this topical review we describe important milestones, such as the Mandelstam–Tamm and the Margolus–Levitin bounds on the quantum speed limit, and summarise recent applications in a variety of current research fields—including quantum information theory, quantum computing, and quantum thermodynamics amongst several others. To bring order and to provide an access point into the many different notions and concepts, we have grouped the various approaches into the minimal time approach and the geometric approach, where the former relies on quantum control theory, and the latter arises from measuring the distinguishability of quantum states. Due to the volume of the literature, this topical review can only present a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art and can never be fully comprehensive. Therefore, we highlight but a few works hoping that our selection can serve as a representative starting point for the interested reader.

Abstract:We propose the experimental test of the uncertainty principle. From sub-quantum models it follows that the uncertainty principle may be not true on short time intervals of the order of a picosecond. The positive result of this experiment would signify the limits of QM.

Abstract:As a foundation of quantum physics, uncertainty relations describe ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertainty relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position and momentum operators, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle points exactly to the attainable area of the variances of position and momentum. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables and (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle, which bounds the uncertainties involved inobtaining precise outcomes for two complementary variables defining a quantumparticle, is a crucial aspect in quantum mechanics. Recently, the uncertaintyprinciple in terms of entropy has been extended to the case involving quantumentanglement. With previously obtained quantum information for the particle ofinterest, the outcomes of both non-commuting observables can be predictedprecisely, which greatly generalises the uncertainty relation. Here, weexperimentally investigated the entanglement-assisted entropic uncertaintyprinciple for an entirely optical setup. The uncertainty is shown to be nearzero in the presence of quasi-maximal entanglement. The new uncertaintyrelation is further used to witness entanglement. The verified entropicuncertainty relation provides an intriguing perspective in that it implies theuncertainty principle is not only observable-dependent but is alsoobserver-dependent.

Abstract:This paper deduces universal uncertainty principle in different quantum theories after about one century of proposing uncertainty principle by Heisenberg, i.e., new universal uncertainty principle of any orders of physical quantities in quantum physics, overcomes the difficulty that current quantum computer, quantum communication, quantum control, quantum mechanics and so on theories cannot give exact values of general uncertainty of any orders of physical quantities, further gives all relevant different expressions of the universal uncertainty principle and their applications. In fact, our studies are consistent with current theories and physical factual experiments, e.g., relevant to hydrogen atom physics experiments. Using the new universal uncertainty principle, people can give all applications to atomic physics, quantum mechanics, quantum communication, quantum calculations, quantum computer and so on.

Abstract:We show how a number of well-known uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform, such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle, and Meshulam’s nonabelian uncertainty principle, have little to do with the structure of the Fourier transform itself. Rather, all of these results follow from very weak properties of the Fourier transform (shared by numerous linear operators), namely that it is bounded as an operator L1→L∞L^1 \rightarrow L^\infty, and that it is unitary. Using a single, simple proof template, and only these (or weaker) properties, we obtain some new proofs and many generalizations of these basic uncertainty principles, to new operators and to new settings, in a completely unified way. Together with our general overview, this paper can also serve as a survey of the many facets of the phenomena known as uncertainty principles.

Abstract:We explore the different meanings of "quantum uncertainty" contained in Heisenberg's seminal paper from 1927, and also some of the precise definitions that were explored later. We recount the controversy about "Anschaulichkeit", visualizability of the theory, which Heisenberg claims to resolve. Moreover, we consider Heisenberg's programme of operational analysis of concepts, in which he sees himself as following Einstein. Heisenberg's work is marked by the tensions between semiclassical arguments and the emerging modern quantum theory, between intuition and rigour, and between shaky arguments and overarching claims. Nevertheless, the main message can be taken into the new quantum theory, and can be brought into the form of general theorems. They come in two kinds, not distinguished by Heisenberg. These are, on one hand, constraints on preparations, like the usual textbook uncertainty relation, and, on the other, constraints on joint measurability, including trade-offs between accuracy and disturbance.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle, first introduced by Heisenberg in inertial frames, clearly distinguishes quantum theories from classical mechanics. In noninertial frames, its information-theoretic expressions, namely, entropic uncertainty relations, have been extensively studied through delocalized quantum fields, and localization of the quantum fields were discussed as well. However, infeasibility of measurements applied on a delocalized quantum field due to the finite size of measurement apparatuses is left unexplained. Therefore, physical clarification of a quantum protocol revealing entropic uncertainty relations still needs investigation. Building on advances in quantum field theories and theoretical developments in entropic uncertainty relations, we demonstrate a relativistic protocol of an uncertainty game in the presence of localized fermionic quantum fields inside cavities. Moreover, a novel lower bound for entropic uncertainty relations with multiple quantum memories is given in terms of the Holevo quantity, which implies how acceleration affects uncertainty relations.

Abstract: The uncertainty principle is often interpreted by the tradeoff between the error of a measurement and the consequential disturbance to the followed ones, which originated long ago from Heisenberg himself but now falls into reexamination and even heated debate. Here we show that the tradeoff is switched on or off by the quantum uncertainties of two involved non-commuting observables: if one is more certain than the other, there is no tradeoff; otherwise, they do have tradeoff and the Jensen-Shannon divergence gives it a good characterization.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle, which gives the constraints on obtaining precise outcomes for incompatible measurements, provides a new vision of the real world that we are not able to realize from the classical knowledge. In recent years, numerous theoretical and experimental developments about the new forms of the uncertainty principle have been achieved. Among these efforts, one attractive goal is to find tighter bounds of the uncertainty relation. Here, using an all optical setup, we experimentally investigate a most recently proposed form of uncertainty principle-the fine-grained uncertainty relation assisted by a quantum memory. The experimental results on the case of two-qubit state with maximally mixed marginal demonstrate that the fine-graining method can help to get a tighter bound of the uncertainty relation. Our results might contribute to further understanding and utilizing of the uncertainty principle.

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, the variance- based Heisenberg- type uncertainty relations are a series of mathematical inequalities posing the fundamental limits on the achievable accuracy of the state preparations. In contrast, we construct and formulate two quantum uncertainty equalities, which hold for all pairs of incompatible observables and indicate the new uncertainty relations recently introduced by L. Maccone and A. K. Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 260401 (2014)]. In fact, we obtain a series of inequalities with hierarchical structure, including the Maccone- Pati's inequalities as a special (weakest) case. Furthermore, we present an explicit interpretation lying behind the derivations and relate these relations to the so- called intelligent states. As an illustration, we investigate the properties of these uncertainty inequalities in the qubit system and a state- independent bound is obtained for the sum of variances. Finally, we apply these inequalities to the spin squeezing scenario and its implication in interferometric sensitivity is also discussed.

Abstract:Quantum uncertainty is a well-known property of quantum mechanics that states the impossibility of predicting measurement outcomes of multiple incompatible observables simultaneously. In contrast, the uncertainty in the classical domain comes from the lack of information about the exact state of the system. One may naturally ask, whether the quantum uncertainty is indeed a fully intrinsic property of the quantum theory, or whether similar to the classical domain lack of knowledge about specific parts of the physical system might be the source of this uncertainty. This question has been addressed in the previous literature where the authors argue that in the entropic formulation of the uncertainty principle that can be illustrated using the so-called, guessing games, indeed such lack of information has a significant contribution to the arising quantum uncertainty. Here we investigate this issue experimentally by implementing the corresponding two-dimensional and three-dimensional guessing games. Our results confirm that within the guessing-game framework, the quantum uncertainty to a large extent relies on the fact that quantum information determining the key properties of the game is stored in the degrees of freedom that remain inaccessible to the guessing party. Moreover, we offer an experimentally compact method to construct the high-dimensional Fourier gate which is a major building block for various tasks in quantum computation, quantum communication, and quantum metrology.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle is the most important feature of quantum mechanics, which can be called the heart of quantum mechanics. This principle sets a lower bound on the uncertainties of two incompatible measurement. In quantum information theory, this principle is expressed in terms of entropic measures. Entropic uncertainty bound can be altered by considering a particle as a quantum memory. In this work we investigate the entropic uncertainty relation under the relativistic motion. In relativistic uncertainty game Alice and Bob agree on two observables, $\hat{Q}$ and $\hat{R}$, Bob prepares a particle constructed from the free fermionic mode in the quantum state and sends it to Alice, after sending, Bob begins to move with an acceleration $a$, then Alice does a measurement on her particle $A$ and announces her choice to Bob, whose task is then to minimize the uncertainty about the measurement outcomes. we will have an inevitable increase in the uncertainty of the Alic's measurement outcome due to information loss which was stored initially in B. In this work we look at the Unruh effect as a quantum noise and we will characterize it as a quantum channel.

Abstract:Nonlocality, which is the key feature of quantum theory, has been linked with the uncertainty principle by fine-grained uncertainty relations, by considering combinations of outcomes for different measurements. However, this approach assumes that information about the system to be fine-grained is local, and does not present an explicitly computable bound. Here, we generalize above approach to general quasi-fine-grained uncertainty relations (QFGURs) which applies in the presence of quantum memory and provides conspicuously computable bounds to quantitatively link the uncertainty to entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering, respectively. Moreover, our QFGURs provide a framework to unify three important forms of uncertainty relations, i.e., universal uncertainty relations, uncertainty principle in the presence of quantum memory, and fine-grained uncertainty relation. This result gives a direct significance to the uncertainty principle, and allows us to determine whether a quantum measurement exhibits typical quantum correlations, meanwhile, it reveals a fundamental connection between basic elements of quantum theory, specifically, uncertainty measures, combined outcomes for different measurements, quantum memory, entanglement and EPR steering.

Abstract:Heisenberg's uncertainty principle implies fundamental constraints on what properties of a quantum system we can simultaneously learn. However, it typically assumes that we probe these properties via measurements at a single point in time. In contrast, inferring causal dependencies in complex processes often requires interactive experimentation-multiple rounds of interventions where we adaptively probe the process with different inputs to observe how they affect outputs. Here, we demonstrate universal uncertainty principles for general interactive measurements involving arbitrary rounds of interventions. As a case study, we show that they imply an uncertainty trade-off between measurements compatible with different causal dependencies.

Abstract:The uncertainty relation and the probability interpretation of quantum mechanics are intrinsically connected, as is evidenced by the evaluation of standard deviations. It is thus natural to ask if one can associate a very small uncertainty product of suitably sampled events with a very small probability. We have shown elsewhere that some examples of the evasion of the uncertainty relation noted in the past are in fact understood in this way. We here numerically illustrate that a very small uncertainty product is realized if one performs a suitable sampling of measured data which occur with a very small probability. It is also shown that our analysis is consistent with the Landau-Pollak type uncertainty relation. It is suggested that the present analysis may help reconcile the contradicting views about the "standard quantum limit" in the detection of gravitational waves.
