Abstract:The Fe-Mo catalyst for oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde was prepared by co-precipitation,and the effects of aging conditions in catalyst preparation,calcination temperature,catalyst shapes,reaction temperature and feed space velocity on the catalyst behaviors were investigated.The catalyst could obtain a methanol conversion of above 98%,a formaldehyde selectivity of above 92% and a formaldehyde yield of above 90% at the conditions of reaction temperature 280-300℃,GHSV 7000-8000 h-1,and methanol volume fraction in feed gas 5.5%.The catalyst had high activity,strength and stability.

Research on iron-molybdenum catalysts for methanol oxidation to formaldehyde

Abstract:Iron-molybdenum catalysts with different Mo/Fe atom ratio for methanol oxidation for formaldehyde were prepared by co-precipitation method.Their catalytic performance were investigated in a conventional fixed bed reactor.The catalysts were characterized by BET,XRD and TEM.The results showed that the catalyst with Mo/Fe atom ratio of 2.2-2.8 and calcined at(400-450) ℃ possessed good catalytic activity and surface area,appropriate pore volume and pore size.Relatively stable MoO3 and Fe2(MoO4)3 crystal phase were formed,and the catalyst had higher activity and selectivity.Methanol conversion of 98% and formaldehyde yield of 93% were attained under the optimal reaction condition as follows:reaction temperature(265-315) ℃,space velocity(8 500-13 000) h-1.The results of 500 h life experiment showed that the catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:Iron-molybdenum catalysts with the same atomic ratio of Mo/Fe for methanol oxidation to formaldehyde were prepared by co-precipitation method under varied rates of stirring. The catalysts were characterized by SEM, XRD and Raman spectrum and the catalytic activity and selectivity evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor.It showed that with an increase of stirring speed, the specific surface area of the catalysts increases and the catalytic activity enhances. The yield of formaldehyde increases from 73.8% at 600 r·min?1 to 95.7% (T=280℃) at 10000 r·min?1. The catalyst consists of plate-like MoO3 and amorphous sponge-like Fe2(MoO4)3. In addition, the catalyst consists of sheet-shaped MoO3 and particle-shaped Fe2(MoO4)3, of which the former had barely no activity, and only the combination of the former and the latter (Fe2(MoO4)3) does show the catalytic activity.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde has been investigated over a series of Zr-Mo-oxide catalysts. Comparative characterization of these catalysts has been carried out by BET specific surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), temperature programmed reduction of hydrogen (H-2-TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The Zr-Mo-oxide catalyst with 12 wt% Mo is found to be highly selective and yields formaldehyde by selective oxidation of methane. The interaction between Mo and Zr induces changes of physicochemical properties such as structure, crystal size, reducible properties, charge of ion and molybdenum oxide species etc., which in turn determines the catalytic performance. These effects are a function of Mo content. Zr(MoO4)(2) in these catalysts might be responsible for selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is carcinogenic and teratogenic, and is therefore a serious danger to human health. It also adversely affects air quality. Catalytic oxidation is an efficient technique for removing HCHO. The development of highly efficient and stable catalysts that can completely convert HCHO at low temperatures, even room temperature, is important. Supported Pt and Pd catalysts can completely convert HCHO at room temperature, but their industrial applications are limited because they are expensive. The catalytic activities in HCHO oxidation of transition-metal oxide catalysts such as manganese and cobalt oxides with unusual morphologies are better than those of traditional MnO2, Co3O4, or other metal oxides. This is attributed to their specific structures, high specific surface areas, and other factors such as active phase, reducibility, and amount of surface active oxygens. Such catalysts with various morphologies have great potential and can also be used as catalyst supports. The loading of relatively cheap Ag or Au on transition-metal oxides with special morphologies potentially improves the catalytic activity in HCHO removal at room temperature. The preparation and development of new nanocatalysts with various morphologies and structures is important for HCHO removal. In this paper, research progress on precious-metal and transition-metal oxide catalyst systems for HCHO oxidation is reviewed; topics such as oxidation properties, structure–activity relationships, and factors influencing the catalytic activity and reaction mechanism are discussed. Future prospects and directions for the development of such catalysts are also covered.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde is a growing million-dollar industry, and has been commercial for close to a century. The Formox process, which is the largest production process today, utilizes an iron molybdate catalyst, which is highly selective, but has a short lifetime of 6 months due to volatilization of the active molybdenum oxide. Improvements of the process’s lifetime is, thus, desirable. This paper provides an overview of the efforts reported in the scientific literature to find alternative catalysts for the Formox process and critically assess these alternatives for their industrial potential. The catalysts can be grouped into three main categories: Mo containing, V containing, and those not containing Mo or V. Furthermore, selected interesting catalysts were synthesized, tested for their performance in the title reaction, and the results critically compared with previously published results. Lastly, an outlook on the progress for finding new catalytic materials is provided as well as suggestions for the future focus of Formox catalyst research.

Abstract:As a main pollutant in indoor environments, formaldehyde has high toxicity and a long release period. The use of catalytic-oxidation technique to remove formaldehyde can effectively improve indoor air quality. Spinel Co3O4 is an inexpensive catalyst with good low-temperature catalytic activity for formaldehyde oxidation. This paper systematically reviews the progress of research on Co3O4-based catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation in recent years. First, the limited performance of pristine Co3O4 and influencing factors (e.g., morphology, crystal face exposure, surface oxygen vacancy, surface reactive species, and environmental factors) is described. Subsequently, we introduce current modification methods to improve catalytic activity, including Co3O4/transition metal oxide composites, Co3O4-supported noble metals, and alkali-metal-ion doping. The reaction mechanism of catalytic oxidation for formaldehyde on Co3O4-based catalysts is also discussed. Finally, perspectives on challenges related to Co3O4 catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation are proposed.

Abstract:The development of a high-efficiency, low-cost, and environmentally friendly catalyst for formaldehy dedegradation is crucial in addressing the issue of indoor formaldehyde pollution. Given that modern individuals spend over 90% of their time indoors, effectively tackling indoor formaldehyde pollution holds significant importance. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient catalyst for formaldehyde degradation: surface modification of MoS2 by single-atom Ni, which can convert formaldehyde into harmless H2O and CO2. The DFT method is employed to systematically investigate the oxidative degradation pathways of formaldehyde on the surface of Ni-doped MoS2. The research focuses on two common oxidative degradation pathways in both L-H mechanism and E-R mechanism. Our findings demonstrate that these four reaction paths occur spontaneously within a temperature range of 300 K-800 K with a reaction equilibrium constant greater than 105. Moreover, even under extreme temperature conditions (100 K), the reaction rate remains favorable. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the minimum activation energy is merely 0.91 eV and H2O and CO2 only need to overcome an energy barrier of 0.71 eV for desorption from the catalyst surface. This substantiates its potential application in both indoor environments and extreme temperature conditions. This theoretical research provides innovative ideas and strategies for effectively oxidizing formaldehyde.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is one of the most abundant but hazardous gaseous pollutants. Transition metal oxide (TMO)‐based thermocatalysts have gained much attention in its removal due to their excellent thermal stability and cost‐effectiveness. Herein, the current progress in TMO‐based thermocatalysts is reviewed in association with their preparation/modification strategies, performance evaluation, and the interactive role of key factors governing their catalytic activities. Formaldehyde (HCHO: FA) is one of the most abundant but hazardous gaseous pollutants. Transition metal oxide (TMO)‐based thermocatalysts have gained much attention in its removal due to their excellent thermal stability and cost‐effectiveness. Herein, a comprehensive review is offered to highlight the current progress in TMO‐based thermocatalysts (e.g., manganese, cerium, cobalt, and their composites) in association with the strategies established for catalytic removal of FA. Efforts are hence made to describe the interactive role of key factors (e.g., exposed crystal facets, alkali metal/nitrogen modification, type of precursors, and alkali/acid treatment) governing the catalytic activity of TMO‐based thermocatalysts against FA. Their performance has been evaluated further between two distinctive operation conditions (i.e., low versus high temperature) based on computational metrics such as reaction rate. Accordingly, the superiority of TMO‐based composite catalysts over mono‐ and bi‐metallic TMO catalysts is evident to reflect the abundant surface oxygen vacancies and enhanced FA adsorptivity of the former group. Finally, the present challenges and future prospects for TMO‐based catalysts are discussed with respect to the catalytic oxidation of FA. This review is expected to offer valuable information to design and build high performance catalysts for the efficient degradation of volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane with molecular oxygen over MoO x /La–Co–O and MoO x /ZrO 2 catalysts to methanol/formaldehyde has been investigated in a specially designed high-pressure continuous-flow reactor. The properties of the catalysts, such as crystal phase, structure, reducibility, ion oxidation state, surface composition and the specific surface area have been characterized with the use of XRD, LRS, TPR, XPS and BET methods. MoO x /La–Co–O catalysts showed high selectivity to methanol formation while MoO x /ZrO 2 revealed the property for the formation of formaldehyde in the selective oxidation of methane. 7 wt MoO x /La–Co–O catalyst gave 6.7 methanol yield (ca. 60 methanol selectivity) at 420 °C and 4.2 MPa. On the other hand, the maximal yield of formaldehyde ca. 4 (47.8 formaldehyde selectivity) was obtained over 12 wt MoO x /ZrO 2 catalyst at 400 °C and 5.0 MPa. 7MoO x /La–Co–O catalyst showed higher modified H 2 -consumption than 12MoO x /ZrO 2 catalyst. The reducibility and the O − /O 2− ratio of the catalysts may play important roles on the catalytic performance. The proper reducibility and the O − /O 2− ratio enhanced the production of methanol in selective oxidation of methane. [MoO 4 ] 2− species in MoO x /ZrO 2 catalysts enable selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is currently produced from methane by a three-step process involving H-2/CO synthesis gas and methanol as intermediates, and development of a single-step process would have great economic incentive for producing this commodity chemical. A historical perspective is presented here in regard to the research carried out with heterogeneous metal oxide catalysts in attempts to achieve selective oxidative conversion of methane to formaldehyde. The concepts employed, both chemical and engineering, are described, and these include dual redox promoters and double-bed catalysts. More recent work in this laboratory has found V2O5/SiO2 catalysts to be very active partial oxidation catalysts. The space-time yield of and selectivity toward formaldehyde are improved by the presence of steam in the methane/air reactant mixture, and an attractive feature of the product mixture is the low quantity of carbon dioxide produced. Space-time yields of >1.2 kg CH2O/kg catalyst per h have been achieved.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of Mo/ZrO2 catalysts in selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde with molecular oxygen as oxidant has been investigated. The maximal yield of formaldehyde, ca. 4.0% (47.8% formaldehyde selectivity), was obtained on 12wt.% Mo/ZrO2 catalyst at 400°C, 5.0MPa, CH4/O2/N2=10/1/3 and 12,000mlg−1 catalysth−1. The physicochemical properties of these catalysts, such as BET surface area, structure, particle size, reducibility, ion oxidation state and surface composition have been comparatively characterized by using BET, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), LR spectra (LRS), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technology. The results clearly show that some interaction between Mo and ZrO2 occurred. Such interaction induced the changes of physicochemical properties, which in turn determined the catalytic performance. The effects were a function of the Mo-loading. Zr(MoO4)2 in Mo/ZrO2 catalysts were closely related to the formation of formaldehyde. The methane conversion and formaldehyde selectivity has been also correlated to the density of molybdenum oxides. The higher the density of molybdenum oxide, the higher was the specific activity. The MoO species of Zr(MoO4)2 enable selective oxidation of methane to formaldehyde, while the many more lattice oxygen species and bulk MoO3 accelerated the deep oxidation of product formaldehyde.

Abstract:Methyl formate is a versatile chemical precursor to a wide range of other important chemicals. It can be synthesized by different routes, among which dehydrogenation and selective oxidation of methanol to methyl formate are particularly attractive, because they are operationally simple and green. Metal catalysts such as Cu and Pd-Zn alloys show good performances in the dehydrogenation reaction, and metal oxides such as MoO3-SnO2 and RuO x /ZrO2, noble metals such as Au and Pd, and their composites, are widely used in the selective oxidation of methanol. We focused on the efficient synthesis of methyl formate, and determined the relationship between the catalyst structures and properties, and the reaction pathways in the dehydrogenation and selective oxidation of methanol. The main factors affecting the reaction pathways and selectivity for methyl formate are discussed in detail. The structures of the formaldehyde species adsorbed on Cu and Pd-Zn alloys surfaces play essential roles in the product selectivities in the dehydrogenation reaction. The secondary reaction rates of the formaldehyde intermediates on supported oxide catalysts and the reactivities of adsorbed oxygen species on noble metals control the selectivities of the methanol selective oxidation. These fundamental insights provide a basis for the design of novel catalysts with specific structures and functions for more efficient conversion of methanol to methyl formate.

Abstract:Indoor formaldehyde(HCHO) removal holds paramount significance for human health, particularly in mild conditions. Here, we introduce a new non-noble single-atom catalyst, Fe1/Ti2CO2, designed for formaldehyde oxidation. The oxidation mechanism of HCHO on Fe1/Ti2CO2 was studied by density functional theory. The HCHO oxidation mechanisms of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism and the Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism were explored. The activation energies of all possible intermediates and their elementary steps in the reaction were given. Through thermodynamic and kinetic analysis, reaction rates at different temperatures ranging from 300K to 600K were obtained. In the temperature range studied, the reaction of formaldehyde oxidation can occur spontaneously and irreversibly. The minimum activation energy is only 0.73 eV, and the CO2 and H2O dissociation endothermic is 1.30 eV. This indicates promising practical applications for the catalyst. Our work can assist in designing new catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation under mild conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Iron molybdate catalysts are applied in the industrial FormOx process to produce formaldehyde by oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of methanol. Only few studies are available about the applicability of iron molybdate catalysts for the ODH of ethanol to produce acetaldehyde. Herein, an iron molybdate synthesized by co‐precipitation (p) and an iron molybdate prepared by a ball‐milling solid‐state synthesis (bm) are applied as ethanol ODH catalysts. Both materials show attractive acetaldehyde selectivites of >90 % (280 °C: p‐Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 : Y AcH =90.3 %; bm‐Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 : Y AcH =60.4 %) and a stable performance. The bulk composition and crystal structure could be confirmed by various characterization techniques and is maintained during ethanol ODH. XPS reveals an enrichment of Mo on the catalyst surface which is slightly decreasing after the catalytic tests. This observation could be a first sign of long‐term deactivation like known from methanol ODH. Comparing the performance of both materials, p‐Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 shows higher activity and aldehyde selectivity. We propose the higher Mo/Fe surface ratio and the lower acidity to be the reasons for these differences.

Abstract:Compared with oxide catalysts for many other selective oxidation and ammoxidation processes, the commercial iron molybdate type catalyst for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde has an outstanding performance giving a selectivity in the range 92–95 % to formaldehyde at almost complete methanol conversion. In this presentation an overview is given describing the historical and present developments that have made possible a fourfold increase of the productivity per reactor tube and day since the late 1950s, which has been achieved without any change of the basic chemical composition of the catalyst. The effects on steam production and power consumption are described as well. Moreover, some results on novel Fe-(V)–Mo–O catalysts with spinel-type structures are described, showing good stability in methanol oxidation. Compared with conventional catalysts, the spinel-type catalysts have a larger number of reoxidation sites (Fe) per active Mo atom and allow the metals to change valence retaining the structure type.

Abstract:This article highlights recent advances in the development of transition metal-based catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation, particularly the enhancement of their catalytic activity for low-temperature oxidation. Various factors that enhance low-temperature activity are reviewed, such as morphology and tunnel structures, synthesis methods, specific surface area, amount and type of active surface oxygen species, oxidation state, and density of active sites are discussed. In addition, catalyst immobilization for practical air purification, reaction mechanism of formaldehyde oxidation, and the reaction parameters affecting the overall efficiency of the reaction are also reviewed.

Abstract:MoOx species dispersed as small domains on Al2O3, ZrO2, and SnO2 catalyze the oxidative conversion of dimethylether to formaldehyde with high primary selectivity (80–98% HCHO, CH3OH-free basis) at low temperatures (500–550 K). The reaction appears to proceed via redox cycles using lattice oxygen and turnover rates increase with the size and reducibility of MoOx domains. Dimethylether conversion rates (per g) and formaldehyde selectivities at 513 K are significantly higher than those reported previously on various catalysts at significantly higher temperatures (620–880 K).

Abstract:Silica supported Sb–V mixed oxide catalysts (VSbOx/SiO2) were prepared and evaluated in methanol selective oxidation. One-pass yield of formaldehyde at 91% was obtained on one VSbOx/SiO2 catalyst. The active phase of VSbOx/SiO2 catalysts is found to be Sb–V mixed oxide, in which isolated VOx species can be stabilized. The relative amount of monomeric VOx species in VSbOx/SiO2 catalyst is higher than pure supported VOx catalyst. On VSbOx/SiO2 catalyst, the deep oxidation of intermediates is greatly depressed because the formation of adsorbed acyl species, which leads to COx, is not favored. The average oxidation state of the vanadium in VSbOx/SiO2 catalysts increases with decreasing Sb/V ratio. Higher oxidation state of the vanadium in VSbOx/SiO2 catalysts is found to be relevant to higher activity while V4+ species are more selective to formaldehyde. Sb–V mixed oxide catalyst provides a possibility to adjust the production distribution in methanol selective oxidation by changing Sb/V ratio.

Abstract:Recent research works on the selective oxidation of methane to methanol and formaldehyde are comprehensively reviewed. It seems that multi-component oxide catalysts, especially those containing oxo-iron species, could be a direction for the research and development of such catalysts.
