Abstract:The sol-gel method was applied to prepare a novel Ag-SiO 2-Al2O3 catalyst which showed high activity in the reaction of direct dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde. The influence of silver loading, calcination temperature and reaction temperature on the catalytic activity was investigated, respectively. XRD patterns show that there are no sharp diffraction peaks before reaction, but after reaction, a set of sharp peaks corresponding to Ag(111), Ag(200), Ag(220), Ag(311) and Ag(222) are observed. SEM results accord well with those from XRD. The special structure of the novel Ag-SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst may lead to its excellent catalytic performance (95.0% of conversion of methanol and 81.2% of HCHO yield), which is the best of all the previous results.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of methanol to anhydrous formaldehyde was carried out over a novel Ag-SiO 2 -MgO catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method. The catalytic activity was measured over the temperature interval 350-700 °C and the space velocity of 1 × 10 4 h -1 , while the optimum conditions were found to be 20 wt% loading of silver and 650 °C reaction temperature. The catalyst exhibits excellent activity (96% conversion) and selectivity (78%) during the process of dehydrogenation with the yield of formaldehyde up to 75%. X-ray diffraction patterns for the novel Ag(20 wt%)-SiO 2 -MgO catalyst correspond to α-crystobalite(100) and Ag(111), (200), (220), (311) and (222). Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the morphology and particle size. Isolated silver particles with a mean size of about 5 μm were observed on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde was carried out over a novel Ag/SiO2 catalyst prepared by the sol-gel method. The yield of formaldehyde over this catalyst was ∼10% higher than that over conventional pumice-supported silver and even ∼1% higher than that over commercial electrolytic silver. When the yields were compared under the optimum conditions, the catalytic activity was measured at 820–920 K, O2/CH3OH molar ratio of 0.35–0.55 and at the space velocity of 1.2×105h−1. The thermal behavior and structure of the catalyst were characterized by TG-DTG, DTA and XRD. It was found that this catalyst was thermally stable and silver was present in a crystalline state. SEM was used to determine its morphology and particle size. The silver particle size range was found to be 200–700 nm. XPS results indicated that two different kinds of silver in aggregated and highly dispersed metallic states, were present on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic direct dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde was carried out over Ag-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 catalysts prepared by sol-gel method. The optimal preparation mass fractions were determined as 8.3% MgO, 16.5% Al2O3 and 20% silver loading. Using this optimum catalyst, excellent activity and selectivity were obtained. The conversion of methanol and the selectivity to formaldehyde both reached 100%, which were much higher than other previously reported silver supported catalysts. Based on combined characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis, DRS), nitrogen adsorption at low temperature, temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), desorption of CO2 (CO2-TPD), etc., the correlation of the catalytic performance to the structural properties of the Ag-SiO2MgO-Al2O3 catalyst was discussed in detail. This perfect catalytic performance in the direct dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde without any side-products is attributed to its unique flower-like structure with a surface area less than 1 m(2)/g, and the strong interactions between neutralized support and the nano-sized Ag particles as active centers.

Abstract:A novel four-component Ag–SiO2–Al2O3–ZnO catalyst prepared by sol–gel method shows an outstanding catalytic activity (99% conversion and 87% selectivity) during the process of the direct dehydrogenation of methanol to anhydrous formaldehyde (HCHO). The optimal preparation conditions were found to be 20wt.% loading of silver and zinc content of 15%. The catalytic activity was measured in the temperature range 450–700°C and at the space velocity of 1 × 104h−1, while the optimum reaction temperature was determined to be 650°C. The catalyst was characterized by several kinds of methods: BET method of nitrogen adsorption at −196°C, TG–DTG, SEM, XRD, and NH3-TPD. The catalysts were white powder-like materials and that the BET surface area was ∼0.5m2g−1. All silver was present in an ionic state in the framework of the SiO2–Al2O3–ZnO carrier before catalytic reaction and was thermally stable up to 1000°C. After the reaction, silver was present in the crystalline metal state. The particles were smaller than those found on Ag–SiO2–Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde was carried out over Ag-SiO2-Al2O3 catalysts prepared by a sol-gel method. Detailed preparation conditions were investigated and the optimal preparation parameters were determined as the Si/Al molar ratio of 8.5/1.5-9/1, silver loading of 20 wt%, and calcination temperature of 900-1000 degreesC with ethanol as the solvent. Under optimum reaction conditions, i.e., the reaction temperature of 640 degreesC, O-2/CH3OH molar ratio of 0.39 with space velocity (GHSV) of 1.2 x 10(5) h(-1), the as-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity. The yield of formaldehyde reaches 91%, much higher than that obtained over the pumice-supported silver catalyst (75%) and even higher than that over the commercial electrolytic silver catalyst (85%). Based on combined characterizations, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray-excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XPS and XAES), nitrogen adsorption at low temperature, thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), scanning electron micrograph (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc., the correlation of the catalytic performance to the structural properties of the Ag-SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst is discussed in detail. It is found that almost all the catalysts are glass-like and nonporous with a surface area of similar to 1 m(2)/g. In the catalysts with silver loading lower than 20 wt%, all the silver species are present as Ag+ ions before the reaction and the catalyst is ultrathermally stable even under elevated temperatures at 1100 degreesC owing to the stabilizing effect of the [AlO4] group. Higher Ag loading in the catalysts leads to the presence of metallic silver species over the surface of the catalyst. During the catalytic reaction, Ag+ ions are partially reduced to metallic Ag. These nano-sized Ag particles act as the active centers and the superior catalytic performance of the Ag-SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst is attributed to its unique surface structure and the strong interactions between the support and the active phase. Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde was carried out over Ag/TiO 2 -SiO 2 catalysts prepared by chemical reduction. The catalytic activity was measured at the temperature interval 820-920 K, O 2 /CH 3 OH molar ratio between 0.35 and 0.50 and at the space velocity of 1.2 × 10 5 h -1 . The optimal content of silver determined by chemical analysis was about 1.7 wt%. The yield of formaldehyde over this catalyst was ~13% higher than that of the industrial pumice-supported silver catalyst and even ~3.5% higher than that of electrolytic silver. The XRD patterns for silver particles supported on TiO 2 -SiO 2 are corresponding to Ag(111), (200) and (220), respectively. SEM was used to determine its morphology and particle size. Isolated silver particles were observed on the surface of the catalyst. O 2 chemisorption by using the pulse technique was carried out to determine the free silver surface areas. The average silver particle size from the calculation of selective oxygen chemisorption was found to be in good agreement with that observed from SEM.

Abstract:Several novel silver-silica catalysts were prepared by means of sol-gel method, which exhibited high activity and selectivity in the catalytic oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. The optimum content of silver was determined as 20%(w/w.), which showed 97% conversion and 85.5% yield of formaldehyde. Some other superiority of the as-prepared silver catalysts was observed by comparing with the commercial silver catalysts, including pumice-supported silver and electrolytic silver. XRD patterns reveal that silver is present as a crystalline state in the Ag-SiO2 catalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of methyl formate to methanol is considered one of the most effective methods for recycling methyl formate products. We recently developed a highly efficient and cost-effective Cu-SiO2 catalyst using the ammonia-evaporation (AE) method. The Cu-SiO2-AE catalyst demonstrated superior performance, achieving a methyl formate conversion of 94.2% and a methanol selectivity of 99.9% in the liquid product. The catalyst also displayed excellent stability over a durability test of 250 h. Compared to the commonly used Cu-Cr catalyst in the industry, the Cu-SiO2-AE catalyst exhibited higher conversion of methyl formate and methanol yield under the same reaction conditions. Characterization results revealed a significant presence of Si-OH groups in the Cu-SiO2-AE catalyst. These groups enhanced the hydrogen spillover effect and improved hydrogenation efficiency by preventing sintering during the reaction to stabilize the Cu species. The strategy employed in this study is applicable to the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for industrial applications.

High surface area Au/CeO 2 catalysts for low temperature formaldehyde oxidation

Abstract:Gold catalysts supported on high surface area CeO2 were synthesized and tested for low temperature formaldehyde oxidation. It was found that the reactivity was greatly enhanced by increasing surface area of the support. Complete conversion of formaldehyde was obtained on a 3.0Au/CeO2-270 catalyst with a surface area of 270m2g−1 at 50°C, and a conversion of 92.3% was obtained at 37°C over the same catalyst, which made it promising for indoor formaldehyde removal. Detailed characterizations of the catalyst showed that the enhancement could be attributed to two factors. One was that Au species mainly in high oxidation states formed on the high surface area CeO2 resulted in a high degree of HCHO adsorption, as revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The other was the high surface area CeO2 provided more oxygen vacancies by the nano effect and the formation of AuxCe1−xO2−δ solid solution as revealed by Raman spectroscopy, on which oxygen molecules could be transformed to active species for the reaction.

Abstract:Aqueous-phase reforming of biomass-derived formaldehyde is one of efficient and sustainable routes to generate molecular hydrogen as clean energy resource. In this work, Ag/MgCO3 catalyst is prepared with constructed stable carbonate-modified metal-support interfaces. Under mild and neutral reaction conditions, it exhibits a near an order of magnitude higher low-temperature activity in formaldehyde reforming reaction for producing hydrogen in comparison with Ag/MgO. The catalytic and spectral observations reveal that the Ag/MgCO3-catalyzed reaction follows an O2-involved HCHO/H2O reforming reaction pathway through O2 −, OOH and H radicals as highly active intermediates. Ag/MgCO3 catalyst shows high rates in isotopic H2-D2 exchange and HCHO/D2O reforming reactions and displays an apparent activation energy (Ea) as low as 7.5 kJ mol−1 within 10–50 °C, indicating facile activation of HCHO CH and H2O OH bonds. Furthermore, Ag/MgCO3 catalyst adsorbs HCHO molecule in a favorable configuration and strength, as evidenced by the HCHO desorption profile. Comprehensive positive factors benefit to the superior hydrogen production activity of carbonate-modified Ag/MgCO3 than Ag/MgO.

Abstract:A new silver-containing (20 wt.%) ceramics has been prepared by impregnating natural kaolin with silver nitrate following high-temperature annealing. The catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity during the methanol oxidation to formaldehyde with the yield of up to 89.3%. Before reaction, the silver in the catalyst is present in an extremely thermally stable ionic state incorporated within the framework of the ceramics. Upon catalytic reaction, well-dispersed metallic silver (particle size ~800 nm) are obtained on the surface of the ceramic support owing to the chemical reduction. The high formaldehyde yield of the catalyst is due to the positive charge on silver.

Abstract:Removal of formaldehyde (HCHO) has recently been attracted much attention, and completely catalytic oxidation at room temperature has been identified as one of the efficient routes for solving this problem. In this research, we show a successful preparation of Ag-loaded octahedral molecular sieve from solvent-free route (Ag/OMS-2-S), which was characterized by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, BET, XPS, ICP-OES, H2-TPR, and HCHO-TPD techniques to investigate the factors influencing the catalytic activity. Very interestingly, HCHO is completely converted into CO2 at room temperature over the Ag/OMS-2-S catalyst. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time for complete oxidation of HCHO at room temperature over all the Ag-based catalysts. Relating to the characterizations, it is suggested that the active oxygen species play a key factor that contributes to the excellent performance of the Ag/OMS-2-S. In addition, the Ag/OMS-2-S catalyst is also very stable and selective. Combination of extraordinary activity and excellent stability of the Ag/OMS-2-S catalysts might offer an alternative way to develop new efficient catalysts for the removal of air pollutants.
