Abstract:Recently, various efforts have been put forward on the development of technologies for the synthesis of methane from CO2 and H2, since it can offer a solution for renewable H2 storage and transportation. In parallel, this reaction is considered to be a critical step in reclaiming oxygen within a closed cycle. Over the years, extensive fundamental research works on CO2 methanation have been investigated and reported in the literatures. In this updated review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent publications during the last 3 years. Various aspects on this reaction system are described in detail, such as thermodynamic considerations, catalyst innovations, the influence of reaction conditions, overall catalytic performance, and reaction mechanism. Finally, the future development of CO2 methanation is discussed.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions has been considered as a dream reaction but suffers from poor efficiency due to the strong C-H bond of methane and easy overoxidation of the methanol product. For overcoming these problems, a series of strategies has been developed for improving methanol productivity with oxidants of hydrogen peroxide and even a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen at mild temperatures. Significant achievements in these strategies using effective catalysts, such as supported metal nanoparticles, colloidal metal nanoparticles, and metal@zeolites are briefly concluded. Moreover, the current challenges, future perspectives for preparing active, selective, and stable catalysts, have been discussed. The zeolite fixed metal nanoparticle structure has been found to boost the reaction by benefiting the formation and enrichment of peroxide intermediates, which might guide the development of more efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Developing a direct conversion route of methane toward oxygenates under milder conditions as a supplement to the two-step route via syngas holds high economic value and demonstrates great potential. The reactions are mostly performed below 200 °C and methane can achieve a 100% atom utilization efficiency. This review summarizes the efforts devoted to developing selective thermo-catalytic oxidation of methane to oxygenates, mainly CH 3 OH as well as HCHO, HCOOH, CH 3 COOH and C 2 H 5 OH in the past ten years. The intrinsic active site configurations and the catalytic mechanisms are disclosed within different categories of oxidants employed in the reaction system, including O 2 , H 2 O 2 , N 2 O and H 2 O. The specific role of H 2 O is also discussed. Additionally, perspectives on catalyst design and process innovation are presented. It is essential to synthesize catalysts with unitary and clear structures, despite their difficulty, to study the true structure-performance relationship, which in return provides an insight for the catalyst design. From a cost, reactivity and safety stand point, only O 2 is deemed acceptable. Possible future directions of research include utilizing CO 2 as oxidant or using ILs as solvent. Given the feature of direct methane conversion to methanol being a thermodynamically feasible yet kinetically unfavorable process, which exhibiting a conversion-selectivity tradeoff issue, diversifying innovation of both catalyst and reaction process would offer a solution.

Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.

Abstract:Methane chemistry is one of the “Holy Grails of catalysis”. It is highly desirable but challenge to transform methane into value-added chemicals, because of its high C-H bonding energy (435 kJ mol−1), lack of π bonding or unpaired electrons. Currently, commercial methane conversion is usually carried out in harsh conditions with enormous energy input. Photocatalytic partial oxidation of methane to liquid oxygenates (PPOMO) is a future-oriented technology towards realizing high efficiency and high selectivity under mild conditions. The selection of oxidant is crucial to the PPOMO performance. Hence, attentions are paid to the research progress of PPOMO with various oxidants (O2, H2O, H2O2 and other oxidants). Moreover, the activation of the selected oxidants is also highly emphasized. Meanwhile, we summarized the methane activation mechanisms focusing on the C-H bond that was broken mainly by •OH radical, O− specie or photogenerated hole (h+). Finally, the challenges and prospects in this subject are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides have been extensively used in the literature for the conversion of methane to methanol. Despite the progress made over the past decades, no method with satisfactory performance or economic viability has been detected. The main bottleneck is that the produced methanol oxidizes further due to its weaker C−H bond than methane. Every improvement in the efficiency of a catalyst to activate methane leads to reduction of the selectivity towards methanol. Is therefore prudent to keep studying (both theoretically and experimentally) metal oxides as catalysts for the quantitative conversion of methane to methanol? This perspective focuses on molecular metal oxide complexes and suggests strategies to bypass the current bottlenecks with higher weight on the computational chemistry side. We first discuss the electronic structure of metal oxides, followed by assessing the role of the ligands in the reactivity of the catalysts. For better selectivity, we propose that metal oxide anionic complexes should be explored further, while hydrophyllic cavities in the vicinity of the metal oxide can perturb the transition-state structure for methanol increasing appreciably the activation barrier for methanol. We also emphasize that computational studies should target at the activation reaction of methanol (and not only methane), the study of complete catalytic cycles (including the recombination and oxidation steps), and use of molecular oxygen as oxidant. The titled chemical conversion is an excellent challenge for theory and we believe that computational studies should lead the field in the future. It is finally shown that bottom-up approaches offer a systematic way for the exploration of the chemical space and should still be applied in parallel with the recently popular machine learning techniques. To answer the question of the title, we believe that metal oxides should still be considered provided that we change our focus and perform more systematic investigations on the activation of methanol.

Abstract:Methane is the fundamental raw material of the C1 chemical industry, with abundant reserves. Its direct conversion into high-value-added chemicals has great scientific significance and broad commercial potential for the efficient use of methane resources. However, it is difficult to convert methane into more useful hydrocarbons and hydrogen, as the reaction usually requires external energy to overcome thermodynamic limitations. Non-oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethane and hydrogen is a promising supply technology. Catalysts which can be adapted to various energy sources are key to this technology. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the design and application of these thermal and photocatalysts. This review outlines some typical catalysts, and reviews the progress in the understanding of reaction mechanisms. Finally, suggestions for the development of high-selectivity and high-stability catalysts for the future are presented.

Abstract:The efficient utilization of methane, a vital component of natural gas, shale gas and methane hydrate, holds significant importance for global energy security and environmental sustainability. However, converting methane into value-added oxygenates presents a formidable challenge due to its inert nature. Direct selective oxidation of methane (DSOM) under mild conditions is essential for reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions compared with traditional indirect routes. Achieving total selectivity in methane hydroxylation remains elusive due to the competitive CO 2 formation. This feature article highlights recent advancements in methane hydroxylation using thermo-, photo-, and electro-catalytic systems. Through strategically designing the structure of catalysts to control the reactive oxygen species and optimizing reaction parameters, significant progress has been made in enhancing oxygenate selectivity and minimizing overoxidation. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying methane hydroxylation with total selectivity offers insights for improving catalyst design and reaction parameter optimization, promoting sustainable methane utilization.

Abstract:Significance Highly abundant methane is vastly underutilized as a feedstock for chemicals and fuels reflecting its inertness. One seemingly attractive approach to methane utilization would be direct catalytic oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) with O 2 to produce ethylene, a valuable chemical feedstock. However, the exothermicity leads largely to nonselective oxidation to CO 2 , a challenge that remains despite decades of research. These results raise the intriguing question of whether the “softer” isoelectronic oxidant, S 2 , might achieve analogous SOCM with acceptable selectivity. Here, we report a combined experimental and computational investigation of the SOCM reaction mechanism, comparing and contrasting with that of conventional OCM. We find that SOCM shows promising selectivity to ethylene and proceeds via a very different pathway than does OCM.

Abstract:An efficient route for selective methane functionalization to liquid products, such as methanol, without intermediate syngas production is an integral part of the movement toward greener chemical and fuel production from currently underutilized resource streams. This challenging chemistry has motivated grand scientific efforts in the study of C–H activation and highly selective active site motifs, yet substantial limitations inhibit the translation of these concepts into practical processes. Here we assess recent developments in methane partial oxidation from thermochemical, photochemical, electrochemical, and non-thermal plasma literature published within the past five years using quantitative performance indicators. Ultimately, the field of methane valorization is unlikely to surpass limiting barriers on its current trajectory. Comprehensive design and innovation that target the improvement of multiple metrics (yield, productivity, product concentration) simultaneously with the incorporation of product protection schemes are paramount, as outlined in a roadmap for concepts with high potential for implementation.

Abstract:Direct and selective oxidation of CH4 with dioxygen to methanol is a "dream reaction" in modern catalysis yet remains a great challenge. Here, we report that TiO2 loaded with dual cocatalysts, that is, nanometals and cobalt oxide (CoOx) nanoclusters, is capable of selectively catalyzing CH4 to CH3OH at room temperature under photoexcitation using abundant and inexpensive O2 as an oxidant. The best activity for the formation of the primary products, CH3OOH and CH3OH, is up to 50.8 μmol for 2 h with 95% selectivity. Mechanistic studies elucidate that the superior activity and selectivity result from the synergistic effect of nanometals and CoOx. Nanometals enhance CH4 conversion by promoting the separation of the photoexcited electron and the reduction of O2. The CoOx mediates a mild CH4 oxidation process by suppressing the formation of highly oxidative •OH radicals that can further oxidize CH3OH to HCHO and CO2, thereby preserving a high selectivity toward oxygenated products. Abstract:Methane is an abundant and relatively clean fossil fuel resource; therefore, its utilization as a chemical feedstock has a major impact on the chemical industry. However, its inert nature makes direct conversion into value-added products difficult under mild conditions. Compared to the gas-phase selective oxidation of methane, there have been several recent advances in the liquid-phase conversion of methane. This review categorizes the reports on the liquid-phase selective oxidation of methane according to the solvent and oxidant used. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed. High yields of methyl bisulfate as a methanol precursor can be achieved using SO3 in sulfuric acid; however, more attention should be paid to the separation process and overall economic analysis. However, the aqueous-phase selective oxidation of methane with in situ generated H2O2 is quite promising from an environmental point of view, provided that an economical reducing agent can be used. Based on the current state-of-the-art on this topic, directions for future research are proposed.

Abstract:Despite the large number of disparate approaches for the direct selective partial oxidation of methane, none of them has translated into an industrial process. The oxidation of methane to methanol is a difficult, but intriguing and rewarding, task as it has the potential to eliminate the prevalent natural gas flaring by providing novel routes to its valorization. This Review considers the synthesis of methanol and methanol derivatives from methane by homogeneous and heterogeneous pathways. By establishing the severe limitations related to the direct catalytic synthesis of methanol from methane, we highlight the vastly superior performance of systems which produce methanol derivatives or incorporate specific measures, such as the use of multicomponent catalysts to stabilize methanol. We thereby identify methanol protection as being indispensable for future research on homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane into methanol is of paramount importance but poses significant challenges in achieving high methanol productivity and selectivity, especially under mild reaction conditions. We show that a Cu-modified monomeric Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst is a highly efficient material for the direct conversion of methane into methanol in the liquid phase using H2O2 as an oxidant at low temperatures, which exhibits an excellent methanol productivity of 431 molMeOH·mol–1Fe·h–1 (with a methanol selectivity of ∼80% over the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst). Combining the control experiments and comprehensive characterization results by among others, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance as well as density functional theory calculations, we found that Cu species in the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst play a pivotal role in facilitating the formation of •OH radicals, which quickly react with •CH3 radicals to form CH3OH. Abstract:Catalytically converting CH4 to chemicals and fuels is of paramount importance but remains a major challenge to simultaneously obtain high activity and selectivity. Here, we report Cu1/ZSM-5 single atom catalyst is highly active (C1 oxygenates productivity of 4800 μmol⋅gcat−1 at 50 °C and 12,000 μmol⋅gcat-1 at 70 °C within 30 min) and selective (C1 oxygenates selectivity of 99 % at 50 °C) for direct CH4 oxidation, comparable to most of those state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. The combined DFT calculation, electronic microscope, X-ray absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance results confirm that each isolated Cu atom stabilized by four O moieties on the ZSM-5 support possesses uniform Cu1-O4 entity as active site and preferentially activates CH4 instead of CH3OH that is advantageous for highly selective C1 oxygenates production, especially for methanol. Our molecular-level finding on the atomic structure of Cu active site paves the way to design better catalysts for methane conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxidation of methane to value-added chemicals is a promising process under mild conditions, nevertheless confronting great challenges in efficiently activating C–H bonds and inhibiting over-oxidation. Herein, we propose a comprehensive strategy for the selective generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by regulating the sizes and facets of Au nanoparticles loaded on ZnO. For photocatalytic methane oxidation at ambient temperature, a high oxygenates yield of 36.4 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with a nearly 100% selectivity has been achieved over the optimized 1.0% Au/ZnO-9.6 (1% Au with (111) facet and 9.6 nm size on ZnO) photocatalyst, exceeding most reported literatures. Mechanism investigations reveal that 1.0% Au/ZnO-9.6 with the medium size and Au (111) facet guarantees the favourable formation of superoxide radicals (·OOH) through mild oxygen reduction, ultimately leading to excellent photocatalytic methane oxidation performance. This work provides some guidance for the delicate design of photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic methane oxidation and oxygen utilization.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol is one of the most difficult chemical processes to perform. A potential group of catalysts to achieve CH4 partial oxidation are Cu-exchanged zeolites mimicking the active structure of the enzyme methane monooxygenase. However, the details of this conversion, including the structure of the active site, are still under debate. In this contribution, periodic density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to explore the molecular features of the selective oxidation of methane to methanol catalyzed by Cu-exchanged mordenite (Cu-MOR). We focused on two types of previously suggested active species, CuOCu and CuOOCu. Our calculations indicate that the formation of CuOCu is more feasible than that of CuOOCu. In addition, a much lower C–H dissociation barrier is located on the former active site, indicating that C–H bond activation is easily achieved with CuOCu. We calculated the energy barriers of all elementary steps for the entire process, including catalyst activation, CH4 activation, and CH3OH desorption. Our calculations are in agreement with experimental observations and present the first theoretical study examining the entire process of selective oxidation of methane to methanol.
