Abstract:Based on the strategy of dynamic metal-coordination for improving mechanical properties, a further ideal was taken to prepare the tough hydrogels with the combination of self-crosslinking monomer and metal-coordination complexes. Herein, a series of hydrogels of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (P(AM-co-AAc-co-NMAM)) consisting the chemical crosslinking induced by NMAM units and the physical crosslinking derived from the coordination complexes of carboxyl-Fe3+ were prepared. The molecular structure was investigated with the ATR-FTIR, Raman and UV-vis spectra. These hydrogels with different water content of 57-93% possess good mechanical performances. The optimal hydrogels possess high tensile strength (8.56 MPa), prominent modulus (15.5 MPa), remarkable toughness (37.85 MJ/m(3)) and superb tearing energy (7062 J/m(2)). The tough hydrogels also display excellent self-recovery (95% toughness recovery within 50 min), pH-triggered healing, shape memory and plasticity abilities. These hydrogels having high strength and toughness may broaden range of potential applications in load-bearing soft actuators, flexible electronics, etc.

Abstract:Researchers are showing a great deal of interest in hydrogels due to the presence of high-water content, self-healing variants. Despite this, research into the development of smart hydrogels that have the combination of toughness, self-healing, and responsiveness to external stimuli is still lacking. Here, tough, and intelligent nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels have been developed by utilizing modified nano-crosslinker by means of gold-selenium (Au-Se) coordination interaction. The NC hydrogels demonstrate remarkable elasticity and strength, even when exposed to notches. With the optimal formulation, the nanocomposite hydrogel can achieve a maximum elongation of 1970%, a maximum fracture stress of 2.48 MPa, and a toughness of up to 9.95 MJ/m 3 , thanks to the dynamic gold crosslinks with improved branching. The presence of this structural attributes facilitates efficient energy dissipation within the hydrogel system. Combining Au-Se interaction as a healing element and the remarkable optothermal effect of nanoparticles, NC hydrogels can be quickly self-healed in near-infrared light exposure of 2 min, achieving a self-healing efficiency of 91%. Additionally, the hydrogels demonstrate repair potential when exposed to microwave irradiation, acid solution, and ultrasound stimulus. Moreover, a multi-responsive hydrogel composed of photothermal gold nanostructures can serve as a light-controlled drug carrier, which has smart drug release ability under external light stimulation. The advantageous properties of hydrogel make it a great option for biomedical and engineering fields.

Abstract:Synthetic materials capable of self-healing when damaged have attracted increasing attention and have been developing rapidly because of their many potential applications. Despite great achievements, there is an urgent need to advance the mechanical properties and reduce the time for healing simultaneously because of limited branch functionality and poor polymer mobility. Here, we report robust and smart hydrogels prepared using multi-vinyl-modified gold nanoparticles through a thiolate-gold coordination interaction as large crosslinkers. As a result of efficient energy dissipation from dynamic gold crosslinks with enhanced branching, hydrogels exhibit excellent elasticity with increased mechanical strength at high elongation, even when notched. Combined with thiolate-gold interaction as a healing motif and a notable optothermal effect of nanoparticles, hydrogels deliver rapid self-healing with optimal efficiency of nearly 96% under near-infrared irradiation in 1 min. These properties may shed light on promising applications for this kind of hydrogel in biomedicine and engineering.

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels can repair their cracks, and restore their original properties. However, self-healing hydrogels usually face low mechanical strength and poor stability. By the dual crosslinking strategy, a self-healing hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel with enhanced strength was fabricated by dynamic acylhydrazone linkages between aldehyde-modified maleic sodium hyaluronate and 3,3'-dithiobis (propionylhydrazide) and subsequent photopolymerization among maleic groups in the hydrogel network. The hydrogels exhibit fast gelation and excellent self-healing capability due to the dynamic and reversible characteristics of acylhydrazone and disulfide linkages. Furthermore, the dual crosslinking increase the mechanical strength of the hydrogels and prolong their stabilization time. Swelling behaviors, morphology, and mechanical properties could be adjusted by altering the molar ratio of -NH-NH2/-CHO. Besides, the hydrogels displayed interesting pH-responsiveness and cytocompatibility. The hydrogels have potential applications in cell culture, drug delivery, and 3D bioprinting.

Abstract:While it is challenging to simultaneously achieve both high mechanical performance and self-healing ability within one polymer hydrogel network, we, herein, synthesized a novel class of hydrogels based on a combination of chemical and dual non-covalent crosslinks via micellar polymerization of 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate, end-capped by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (IPDI-HEMA), with acrylamide (AM). The prepared hydrogels were demonstrated to possess a tensile elongation at a break of at least 1900%, a fracture energy of 138.4 kJ m(-3), and remarkable self-healing behaviors (e.g., a strong self-healing ability achieved at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus or healing agent). The multiple crosslinks developed in this study for one polymer hydrogel network are significant steps to construct the desired functional hydrogels with excellent self-healing and mechanical properties.

Abstract:We present a facile strategy to synthesize self-healable tough and highly stretchable hydrogels. Our design rationale for the creation of ionic cross-linked hydrogels is to graft an acrylic acid monomer on the surface of vinyl hybrid silica nanoparticles (VSNPs) for the growth of poly(acrylic) acid (PAA), and the obtained VSNP-PAA nanobrush can be used as a gelator. Physical cross-linking through hydrogen bonding and ferric ion-mediated ionic interactions between PAA polymer chains of the gelators yielded ionic nanocomposite physical hydrogels with excellent and balanced mechanical properties (tensile strength 860 kPa, elongation at break similar to 2300%), and the ability to self-repair (tensile strength similar to 560 kPa, elongation at break similar to 1800%). The toughness and stretchability arise from the reversible cross-linking interactions between the polymer chains that help dissipate energy through stress (deformation) triggered dynamic processes. These unique properties will enable greater application of these hydrogel materials, especially in tissue engineering.

Abstract:Conventional wound healing materials suffer from low efficiency, poor mechanical strength, and nontunable properties. Responsive hydrogels are appealing candidates for tissue engineering. Herein, we developed a double-cross-linked hydrogel system composed of hyperbranched PEG-based polymer, comprising pre-cross-linked acetal structure and numerous terminal acrylate groups, which can form hydrogels in situ and can be further strengthened by UV irradiation. The hyperbranched glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate polymers (HB-GMA-PEGs) were first synthesized via in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (DE-ATRP). A series of pre-cross-linked materials were achieved after postfunctionalization. The material can absorb a high amount of water to form hydrogels, and the gel stiffness was evaluated in detail before and after UV irradiation. The in vitro cytotoxicity experiments were conducted with the resulting materials and have demonstrated their good biocompatibility. The results indicate that this type of hydrogel with high water uptake capacity has appealing potential as a responsive biomaterial for wound closure.
Tough hydrophobic association hydrogels with self-healing and reforming capabilities achieved by polymeric core-shell nanoparticles

Abstract:The application range of hydrogels can be greatly widened by improving their mechanical properties. It is still a great challenge to develop hydrogels with good mechanical properties, reliable self-healing properties and remolding ability at the same time. Inspired by biological soft tissue with excellent mechanical properties and self-healing properties, here, a facile method to fabricate poly (styrene-acrylic acid) (P(S-AA)) core-shell nanoparticles with plenty of carboxyl groups on their surface, and their enhancement to hydrophobic association hydrogels was reported. Under stress, the dynamic physical bonds including hydrogen bonding between polymer chains and P(S-AA) core-shell nanoparticles (NPs), and entanglement of hydrophobic chains were destroyed to effectively dissipate energy, and uniform hydrogel network leads to smooth stress-transfer, which makes the core-shell nanoparticles composite hydrophobic association hydrogels (MHA gels) excellent mechanical properties, such as excellent mechanical properties, toughness and ductility, and good self-healing properties as well. These features make the MHA gels have great potential in biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, articular cartilage and artificial skin.

Abstract:Hydrophobic stearyl methacrylate (C18) was captured into sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles and self-assembled nanoparticles of an amphiphilic polyurethane macromonomer PU-HEMA were prepared, and they were used as a physical crosslinker and a multifunctional covalent crosslinker, respectively. A reaction system containing acrylamide (AM), the C18 in the micelles and the self-assembled PU-HEMA nanoparticles was designed for constructing chemically and physically double-crosslinked network (CPDN) hydrogels. The prepared CPDN hydrogels have a tensile elongation at break of at least 1400% and can rapidly and fully recover their original shapes in compression experiments, exhibiting superior stretchability and resilience. In addition, the CPDN hydrogels possess a remarkable self-healing behavior and strong self-healing ability even at ambient temperature without the need for any stimulus or healing agent. The novel strategy developed in this study to construct highly stretchable, resilient and self-healing polymer hydrogels is simple yet extremely versatile, thereby opening up a new avenue for the construction of desired functional CPDN hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Hydrogels are polymeric materials that have a relatively high capacity for holding water. Recently, a double network (DN) technique was developed to fabricate hydrogels with a toughness comparable to rubber. The mechanical properties of DN hydrogels may be attributed to the brittle sacrificial bonding network of one hydrogel, facilitating stress dispersion, combined with ductile polymer chains of a second hydrogel. Herein, we report a novel class of tunable DN hydrogels composed of a polyurethane hydrogel and a stronger, dipole-dipole and H-bonding interaction reinforced (DHIR) hydrogel. Compared to conventional DN hydrogels, these materials show remarkable improvements in mechanical recovery, modulus, and yielding, with excellent self-healing and self-gluing properties. In addition, the new DN hydrogels exhibit excellent tensile and compression strengths and possess shape-memory properties, which make them promising for applications in engineering, biomedicine, and other domains where load bearing is required.

Abstract:Polymeric hydrogels prepared using organic crosslinking agents usually possess severely heterogeneous aggregation of crosslinking points because of their irregular free-radical polymerization, and the resulting mechanically weak and brittle properties greatly limit their potential applications. A straightforward strategy to improve their mechanical performance can be a combination of a uniform polymer network and a high healing capability, beneficial to restoring their structures and properties for practical applications. Herein, a facile and general strategy was reported to fabricate mechanically tough and highly efficient healable hydrogels composed of a chemically crosslinked network and metal-ligand coordination crosslinks, accompanied with highly stretchable, elastic and notch-insensitive properties. Combined with ultraviolet (UV)-responsive organic crosslinking agents, the resulting hydrogels made it possible to improve the dispersion of crosslinking points in the polymer network. The mechanical strength could be further enhanced through the introduction of metal ions (e.g., Ag+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+) in the formation of metal coordination interaction. Excitingly, in light of dynamic metal-ligand coordination as a healing motif, an optimal healing efficiency of 85% in 30 s could be achieved when exposed to microwave irradiation. Furthermore, hydrogels with excellent antibacterial activity and cell viability have been demonstrated, showing great potential as surgical dressings to accelerate wound closure.

Abstract:Dynamic noncovalent interactions with reversible nature are critical for the integral synthesis of self-healing biological materials. In this work, we developed a simple one-pot strategy to prepare a fully physically cross-linked nanocomposite hydrogel through the formation of the hydrogen bonds and dual metal-carboxylate coordination bonds within supramolecular networks, in which iron ions (Fe3+) and TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) acted as cross-linkers and led to the improved mechanical strength, toughness, time-dependent self-recovery capability and self-healing property. The spectroscopic analysis and rheological measurements corroborated the existence of hydrogen bonds and dual coordination bonds. The mechanical tests and microscopic morphology were explored to elucidate the recovery properties and toughening mechanisms. The hydrogen bonds tend to preferentially break prior to the coordination bonds associated complexes that act as skeleton to maintain primary structure integrity, and the survived coordination bonds with dynamic feature also serve as sacrificial bonds to dissipate another amount of energy after the rupture of hydrogen bonds, which collectively maximize the contribution of sacrificial bonds to energy dissipation while affording elasticity. Additionally, the multiple noncovalent interactions in diverse types synergistically serve as dynamic but highly stable associations, leading to the effective self-healing efficiency over 90% after damage. We expect that this facile strategy of incorporating the biocompatible and biodegradable CNFs as building blocks may enrich the avenue in exploration of dynamic and tunable cellulosic hydrogels to expand their potential applications in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Hydrogels usually suffer from low mechanical strength, which largely limit their application in many fields. In this Research Article, we prepared a dual physically cross-linked hydrogel composed of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PAM-co-PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by simple two-steps methods of copolymerization and freezing/thawing. The hydrogen bond-associated entanglement of copolymer chains formed as cross-linking points to construct the first network. After being subjected to the freezing/thawing treatment, PVA crystalline domains were formed to serve as knots of the second network. The hydrogels were demonstrated to integrate strength and toughness (1230 ± 90 kPa and 1250 ± 50 kJ/m(3)) by the introduction of second physically cross-linked network. What̀s more, the hydrogels exhibited rapid recovery, excellent fatigue resistance, and self-healing property. The dynamic property of the dual physically cross-linked network contributes to the excellent energy dissipation and self-healing property. Therefore, this work provides a new route to understand the toughness mechanism of dual physically cross-linked hydrogels, hopefully promoting current hydrogel research and expanding their applications.
Tough and Resilient Hydrogels Enabled by a Multifunctional Initiating and Cross-Linking Agent

Abstract:Many high-strength hydrogels have been developed in recent years; however, few of them are both tough and resilient, and their intrinsic paradoxical nature makes designing a gel with both high toughness and high resilience a great challenge. To address this problem, we introduced both N,N,N,N-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PA) and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) into polyacrylamide hydrogel networks to construct an entangled network that contains chemically cross-linked chains and branched chains simultaneously. The entanglements of branched chains can act as a physical cross-linking point to uniformly disperse stress on molecular chains, and chemical cross-linking ensures the stability of the hydrogel network. The increase in the number and length of branched chains is able to achieve an enhancement in strength while the slip of the entangled polymer chains can effectively achieve energy dissipation and can improve the toughness of the gel. Moreover, the resultant hydrogels exhibit an excellent resilience (>98%). Therefore, high toughness and resilience are achieved simultaneously. In addition, we also investigated the initiation mechanism of PA. This strategy creates a new way for the preparation of next-generation high toughness and high resilience hydrogel-based materials, which have promising applications in wearable, flexible strain/pressure sensors.

Abstract:A molecularly engineered dual-crosslinked hydrogel with extraordinary mechanical properties is reported. The hydrogel network is formed with both chemical crosslinking and acrylic-Fe(III) coordination; these, respectively, impart the elasticity and enhance the mechanical properties by effectively dissipating energy. The optimal hydrogel achieves a tensile stress of ca. 6 MPa at a large elongation ratio (>7 times), a toughness of 27 MJ m(-3) , and a stiffness of ca. 2 MPa, and has good self-recovery properties.

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels have emerged as the most promising alternatives to conventional brittle hydrogels used in the biomedical field due to the features of long-term stability and durability. While, the incompatibility between the fast self-healing property and enough mechanical strength of hydrogels remains a challenge. Therefore, hydrogels that possess not only mechanical toughness but also autonomous self-healing capacity are becoming sought after. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the latest self-healing mechanisms. Specifically, we review various systems based on dynamic bonds, ranging from dynamic covalent bonds to noncovalent bonds. Additionally, this review presents different characterization methods for self-healing hydrogels, along with highlighting their potential applications in the biomedical field, such as tissue engineering, drug delivery carriers, cell therapy, and wound dressing.
