Abstract:AbstractFunctional soft materials, especially hydrogels have been widely developed to achieve various soft structures and machines. However, synthetic hydrogels commonly show formula‐dependent mechanical properties to fulfill the requirements of mechanical elasticity, stiffness, toughness, and tearing‐resistance for adapting to complex application scenario. Inspired by heterostructures and materials found in nature such as leaves and insect wings, a sequential photopolymerization process combined with site‐selective patterning exposure is reported to prepare programmable hydrogels with locally heterogeneous reinforcement skeletons, i.e., interpenetrating double networks. The heterogeneous interface between soft matrices and stiff skeletons is seamlessly interlocked through strong multiple hydrogen bonds induced by phase transition. By harnessing the size, shape, and distribution of the patterned stiff skeletons, a wide range of mechanical properties of hydrogels including modulus (0.32–5.92 MPa), toughness (0.15–18 kJ m−2), dissipated energy (1–100 kJ m−3), impact resistance, and mechanical anisotropy can be readily sculpted within one material system without needing design and optimization of the complex and elusive material formulation on demand. It is believed that this simple yet powerful method relying on heterogenous patterning would guide the development of functional hydrogel materials with programmable mechanical properties toward potential engineering applications, such as damping and flexible circuits.
Chitosan‐based Double Network Hydrogels with Self‐healing and Dual‐responsive Shape Memory Abilities

Abstract:ABSTRACTChitosan‐based single network hydrogels with imine bonds have excellent self‐healing capability, while poor mechanical properties limit their applications. Here, chitosan‐polyacrylamide‐based double network hydrogels were prepared via in situ free‐radical polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of N‐carboxyethyl chitosan (CEC) and dibenzaldehyde‐terminated telechelic poly(ethylene glycol), which had excellent mechanical properties, self‐healing, and dual‐responsive shape memory abilities. The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break could reach 460 kPa and 4600%, respectively. Meanwhile, owing to the reversibility of imine bonds, elongation and strength at break of hydrogels could heal by 84.2 and 93.2% under alkali stimulation at 35 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrogels also had good shape memory abilities for pH‐stimuli responsiveness of the imine bonds and metal ions stimuli responsiveness of CEC. The prepared chitosan‐based functional hydrogels have great potential application prospects in tissue scaffolds, actuators, and wearable devices. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Abstract:Shape memory hydrogels have attracted extensive attention in fields such as artificial tissues, biomimetic devices and diagnostics, and intelligent biosensors. However, the practical applications were hindered by the absence of self-healing capability and multi-stimuli-responsiveness. To address these issues, we developed a shape memory hydrogel with self-healing and dual stimuli-response performance. The hydrogel system was constructed via an interpenetrating network consisting of in situ radical polymerization and host-guest interaction. The hydrogel exhibited rapid self-healing property, which can be stretched after self-healing for 1 min at 25 °C. Besides, the hydrogel displayed varied swelling performance in different light or solvent conditions. Moreover, the hydrogel showed a dual stimuli-responsive shape memory effect to ultraviolet (UV) light and ionic strength in 1 min. Such a shape memory hydrogel with self-healing ability and multi-stimuli-responsive properties will offer an option toward intelligent soft materials for biomedical and bionic research.

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels can repair their cracks, and restore their original properties. However, self-healing hydrogels usually face low mechanical strength and poor stability. By the dual crosslinking strategy, a self-healing hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel with enhanced strength was fabricated by dynamic acylhydrazone linkages between aldehyde-modified maleic sodium hyaluronate and 3,3'-dithiobis (propionylhydrazide) and subsequent photopolymerization among maleic groups in the hydrogel network. The hydrogels exhibit fast gelation and excellent self-healing capability due to the dynamic and reversible characteristics of acylhydrazone and disulfide linkages. Furthermore, the dual crosslinking increase the mechanical strength of the hydrogels and prolong their stabilization time. Swelling behaviors, morphology, and mechanical properties could be adjusted by altering the molar ratio of -NH-NH2/-CHO. Besides, the hydrogels displayed interesting pH-responsiveness and cytocompatibility. The hydrogels have potential applications in cell culture, drug delivery, and 3D bioprinting.

Abstract:Hydrogels usually suffer from low mechanical strength, which largely limit their application in many fields. In this Research Article, we prepared a dual physically cross-linked hydrogel composed of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PAM-co-PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by simple two-steps methods of copolymerization and freezing/thawing. The hydrogen bond-associated entanglement of copolymer chains formed as cross-linking points to construct the first network. After being subjected to the freezing/thawing treatment, PVA crystalline domains were formed to serve as knots of the second network. The hydrogels were demonstrated to integrate strength and toughness (1230 ± 90 kPa and 1250 ± 50 kJ/m(3)) by the introduction of second physically cross-linked network. What̀s more, the hydrogels exhibited rapid recovery, excellent fatigue resistance, and self-healing property. The dynamic property of the dual physically cross-linked network contributes to the excellent energy dissipation and self-healing property. Therefore, this work provides a new route to understand the toughness mechanism of dual physically cross-linked hydrogels, hopefully promoting current hydrogel research and expanding their applications.
Tough Supramolecular Hydrogels with Excellent Self-Recovery Behavior Mediated by Metal-Coordination Interaction

Abstract:Based on the strategy of dynamic metal-coordination for improving mechanical properties, a further ideal was taken to prepare the tough hydrogels with the combination of self-crosslinking monomer and metal-coordination complexes. Herein, a series of hydrogels of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (P(AM-co-AAc-co-NMAM)) consisting the chemical crosslinking induced by NMAM units and the physical crosslinking derived from the coordination complexes of carboxyl-Fe3+ were prepared. The molecular structure was investigated with the ATR-FTIR, Raman and UV-vis spectra. These hydrogels with different water content of 57-93% possess good mechanical performances. The optimal hydrogels possess high tensile strength (8.56 MPa), prominent modulus (15.5 MPa), remarkable toughness (37.85 MJ/m(3)) and superb tearing energy (7062 J/m(2)). The tough hydrogels also display excellent self-recovery (95% toughness recovery within 50 min), pH-triggered healing, shape memory and plasticity abilities. These hydrogels having high strength and toughness may broaden range of potential applications in load-bearing soft actuators, flexible electronics, etc.

Abstract:We report a dual ionic cross-linking approach for the preparation of double-network hydrogels with robustness, high strength, and toughness, sodium alginate/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Fe3+ (SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+), in a facile "one-step" dual ionic cross-linking method. We take advantage of the abundant carboxyl groups on alginate molecules and the copolymer chains and their high coordination capacity with multivalent metal ions to obtain hydrogels with high strength and toughness. The optimal SA/P(AAm-co-AAc)/Fe3+ (SA 2 wt % and AAc S mol %) hydrogels showed a remarkable mechanical performance with 3.24 MPa tensile strength and 1228% strain, both of which remained stable with 76% water content and were highly swelling resistant in an aqueous environment. The hydrogels possessed high fatigue resistance, self recovery, pH-triggered healing capability, shape memory, and reversible gel sol transition facilitated by pH regulation. Moreover, they show three-dimensional (3D) printing processability by properly adjusting the solution viscosity. The approach may provide a convenient way of obtaining hydrogels having high strength and toughness with a number of desirable properties for a broad range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Smart hydrogels have wide potential in biological field owing to their self-healing property, pH or temperature sensitivity. However, the preparation of smart hydrogels often requires complicated synthesis process, and the single functionality of hydrogels might limit their application. To solve these problems, we developed a self-healing, pH-sensitive and shape memory hydrogel of poly (diacetone acrylamide-co-acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/alginate (PDAAc-A), taking advantage of the Schiff-base reaction and the hydrogen bonding interaction in a one-step method. The tensile modulus, fracture stress, fracture strain and toughness of the developed PDAAc-A3 hydrogel are 0.021 MPa, 0.013 MPa, 7.5 mm/mm and 0.07 MJ/m2, respectively. The dynamic and reversible acylhydrazone and hydrogen bonds endow hydrogels with self-healing property and pH-sensitive gel-sol transformation ability. The tensile tests demonstrate that the self-healing efficiency of hydrogel could reach up to 85% after about 30 min. Furthermore, PDAAc-A hydrogel exhibits pH-sensitivity during drug release. In PBS solution with pH value of 5, the hydrogel shows the fastest drug release rate and the highest drug release ratio, which is near 100% after about 4 h. Moreover, in 1 M ferric chloride solution, the shape memory time, shape memory ratio and shape recovery ratio of the resultant hydrogel are 2 min, 100% and 100%, respectively.

Abstract:Smart hydrogels with responsive behaviors have attracted tremendous attention. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize stretchable hydrogels capable of changing their original properties in response to multiple external stimuli. Here, integration of actuation function, shape memory, and self-healing capability in a highly stretchable hydrogel under triple external triggers is achieved by rationally engineering multiple functional moieties. The hydrogel exhibits high stretchability (average relative strain (mm/mm) is >15) and excellent fatigue resistance during 100 loading cycles of 100% strain. Incorporating a moisture-insensitive polymer film with the hydrogel, hydroactuated functionality is demonstrated. Moreover, shape memory and self-healing abilities of the hydrogel are realized by the formation of ionic crosslinking or dynamic borate ester in conditions of multivalent cations and pH, respectively. Deformable plastic flowers are displayed in this work as a proof-of-concept, and it is believed that this smart hydrogel could be used in plenty of frontier fields, such as designing electronic devices, soft robotics, and actuators.

Abstract:A molecularly engineered dual-crosslinked hydrogel with extraordinary mechanical properties is reported. The hydrogel network is formed with both chemical crosslinking and acrylic-Fe(III) coordination; these, respectively, impart the elasticity and enhance the mechanical properties by effectively dissipating energy. The optimal hydrogel achieves a tensile stress of ca. 6 MPa at a large elongation ratio (>7 times), a toughness of 27 MJ m(-3) , and a stiffness of ca. 2 MPa, and has good self-recovery properties.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention in soft electronic devices. However, it is still a challenging to be integrated with outstanding mechanical performance, self-healing, shape memory and conductive capability. Herein, we developed a multifunctional conductive hydrogel via interpenetrating network (IPN) and multiple hydrogen bond interaction. Poly (acrylic acid)-polyaniline (PAA-PANI) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) form bones of IPN through chemical and physical double cross-linking. Chemically crosslinking of IPN was obtained by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid and aniline. Physical crosslinking is realized by more multiple hydrogen bonds (N-H···O, O-H···O, O-H···N, N-H···N) interaction among PVA, polydopamine and PF127 diamino oxygen derivatives. PANI forms a conductive path in the IPN to ensure its conductivity. IPN hydrogels with multiple hydrogen bonds has excellent mechanical strength, which is much higher than conventional conductive hydrogels. Moreover, the structure endowed the hydrogel low swelling property, good self-healing and thermal-responsive shape memory effect. The multifunctional IPN conductive hydrogel have potential applications in smart devices including self-healing electronic devices, soft robot, and sensors.

Abstract:Shape memory hydrogels (SMHs) can fix the hydrogels in a provisional shape and restore the initial shape under external stimulation. Herein, a dual‐responsive shape memory hydrogel with dual‐responsive swelling and self‐healing properties is presented in this work. The SMHs were fabricated by one‐step emulsion copolymerization of acrylic acid (AAc), acrylamide (AAm) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA). Sodium alginate (SA) was introduced as an interpenetrating polymer in the network. With ionic cross‐linking between ‐COO− and Fe3+ or saline‐reinforced hydrophobic association, the hydrogels can be fixed in a provisional shape, which can be restored by immersing the hydrogels in vitamin C solution or pure water, respectively. When the as‐prepared hydrogels were immersed in FeCl3 solutions, additional ionic cross‐linking between Fe3+ and ‐COO− could be formed, thus constructing the dual physically cross‐linked (DPC) network, which endows the hydrogels with excellent fracture stress (2.6 MPa) and toughness (5.47 MJ/m3). Besides, the reversible physical cross‐linkings endowed the hydrogel with outstanding self‐healing capability. Furthermore, the pH and saline responsive swelling properties of the SMHs are additional fantastic properties. Therefore, we believe that this simple strategy provides a great opportunity for the preparation of SMHs with multiple intellectual performances.

Abstract:Macroscopic hydrogel fibers are highly desirable for smart textiles, but the fabrication of self-healable and super-tough covalent/physical double-network hydrogels is rarely reported. Herein, copolymers containing ketone groups were synthesized and prepared into a dynamic covalent hydrogel via acylhydrazone chemistry. Double-network hydrogels were constructed via the dynamic covalent crosslinking of copolymers and the supramolecular interactions of iota-carrageenan. Tensile tests on double-network and parental hydrogels revealed the successful construction of strong and tough hydrogels. The double-network hydrogel precursor was wet spun to obtain macroscopic fibers with controlled drawing ratios. The resultant fibers reached a high strength of 1.35 MPa or a large toughness of 1.22 MJ/m3. Highly efficient self-healing performances were observed in hydrogel fibers and their bulk specimens. Through the simultaneous healing of covalent and supramolecular networks under acidic and heated conditions, fibers achieved rapid and near-complete healing with 96% efficiency. Such self-healable and super-tough hydrogel fibers were applied as shape memory fibers for repetitive actuating in response to water, indicating their potential in intelligent fabrics.

Abstract:The wide development of hydrogels had been used in many filed due to the high water-containing and tough three-dimensional structure, however, the poor mechanical and multi-functional properties of hydrogel can be limited in its applications deeply. Herein, the dual responsive self-healing hydrogels with tough mechanical properties were manufactured by dual-physical cross-linking based on biodegradable aliphatic polycarbonate. Choosing the soft and hard segments to design the polymeric hydrogel not only can facilitate the dual-dynamic bonding interactions but also the resilient hydrogels possess robust and controllable mechanical strength (6.51 MPa). Furthermore, the results of swelling and stability tests of the materials indicated that the swelling ability of the biodegradable hydrogels can be regulated by the hydrophilic group, and the maximal swelling ratio in water and the equilibrium water content is 66% and 40%, respectively. It is worth mentioning that the tough hydrogels embrace dual-responsive high efficiency of self-healing ability, and the self-healing time is 2 h at 50 °C or 10 h under pH = 5, suggesting that the obtained hydrogels can respond to temperature and pH value to drive the fracture interface for fast self-healing, which will offer new opportunities for stimuli-responsive materials and wound healing.

Abstract:Double physical network (DPN) hydrogels exhibit superior performance compared with other hydrogel types due to their unique crosslinking structure. However, certain mechanical properties, such as self-recovery and fatigue resistance, still need improvement, and stimuli-responsiveness can be expanded for a wider range of applications. In this study, we presented a facile strategy for designing multifunctional DPN hydrogels based on a poly-cyclodextrin (PCD) and adamantane (Ad) host-guest supramolecular crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAAm) network and a low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) network established through Ca2+ or H+. ‘Egg box’ junction zones between Ca2+ and COO− on the LMP chains, as well as hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic association junction zones, could be formed during this process. The synergistic effect of the flexible supramolecular network and the stiff LMP network imparted remarkable stress tolerance, fatigue resistance, ductility, and anti-piercing capacities to the DPN hydrogels. The thermal reversible DPN structure also endowed the hydrogel with thermal-accelerated rapid self-recovery, as the hydrogel can virtually recover to its original state within 40 min at 80 °C. Multistimuli-responsive including chemical- and thermal-induced shape memory behavior was achieved based on the versatile LMP network. The temporary shape of the LMP hydrogel could be fixed with the introduction of Ca2+ or H+, while spontaneous shape recovery was observed under near infrared (NIR) radiation or immersion in K2CO3 or NaOH solutions, respectively. Additionally, the DPN hydrogels exhibited notable self-healing behavior when the cut surfaces were contacted and stored at 80 °C. More importantly, green natural resources derived raw materials of cyclodextrin (CD) and LMP also offered a sustainable strategy to prepare functional hydrogels. The combination of the above features of the LMP DPN hydrogel provided a new method for designing smart materials with ideal functions for soft actuators and biomedical applications.

Abstract:The growing list of potential applications of soft materials increases the demand for, among others, new multifunctional hydrogels. We propose a hybrid double-network hydrogel based on synthetic poly(acrylic acid) and alginate, a natural polymer. These polymer networks were double crosslinked: chemically and physically. The ferrous ion was used to catalyze the decomposition of the initiator and later, after its oxidation by the initiator to the ferric ion, was coordinated by the carboxylic groups of the polymer networks and acted as a physicochemical crosslinker. The composition of the hydrogel was optimized to get improved mechanical and electrical properties, and the self-healing ability. The introduction of the coordination bond between Fe3+ and the carboxylic groups of AA and alginate molecules created the ability of self-healing of the hydrogels; they could regenerate without any external stimulus and regain their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Multi-bond network (MBN) which contains a single network with hierarchical cross-links is a suggested way to fabricate robust hydrogels. In order to reveal the roles of different cross-links with hierarchical bond energy in the MBN, here we fabricate poly(acrylic acid) physical hydrogels with dual bond network composed of ionic cross-links between carboxyl-Fe3+ interactions and hydrogen bonds, and compare these dually cross-linked hydrogels with singly and ternarily cross-linked hydrogels. Simple models are employed to predict the tensile property, and the results confirm that the multi-bond network with hierarchical distribution in the bond energy of cross-links endows hydrogel with effective energy-dissipating mechanism. Moreover, the dually cross-linked MBN gels exhibit excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 500 kPa, elongation at break ~ 2400%) and complete self-healing after being kept at 50 °C for 48 h. The factors on promoting self-healing are deeply explored and the dynamic multi-bonds are regarded to trigger the self-healing along with the mutual diffusion of long polymer chains and ferric ions.
