Abstract:We introduce a new class of large structured random matrices characterized by four fundamental properties which we discuss. We prove that this class is stable under matrix-valued and pointwise non-linear operations. We then formulate an efficient method, based on an extremization problem, for computing the spectrum of subblocks of such large structured random matrices. We present different proofs -- combinatorial or algebraic -- of the validity of this method, which all have some connection with free probability. We illustrate this method with well known examples of unstructured matrices, including Haar randomly rotated matrices, as well as with the example of structured random matrices arising in the quantum symmetric simple exclusion process. tured random matrices arising in the quantum symmetric simple exclusion process.

On singular pencils with commuting coefficients

Abstract:We investigate the relation between the spectrum of matrix (or operator) polynomials and the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. We prove that the polynomial of commuting matrices is singular, i.e. its spectrum is the whole complex plane, if and only if (0, 0, ... , 0) belongs to the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. On the other hand we prove that this equivalence is not longer true if we consider the operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert space as coefficients of polynomial. As a consequence we could propose a new description of (Taylor) spectrum of k-tuple of matrices and we could disprove the conjecture previously proposed in the literature. Additionally, we pointed out the Kronecker forms of the pencils with commuting coefficients.

Abstract:We prove that for any circulant matrix $C$ of size $n\times n$ with the monic characteristic polynomial $p(z)$, the spectrum of its $(n-1)\times(n-1)$ submatrix $C_{n-1}$ constructed with first $n-1$ rows and columns of $C$ consists of all critical points of $p(z)$. Using this fact we provide a simple proof for the Schoenberg conjecture recently proved by R. Pereira and S. Malamud. We also prove full generalization of a higher order Schoenberg-type conjecture proposed by M. de Bruin and A. Sharma and recently proved by W.S. Cheung and T.W. Ng. in its original form, i.e. for polynomials whose mass centre of roots equals zero. In this particular case, our inequality is stronger than it was conjectured by de Bruin and Sharma. Some Schmeisser's-like results on majorization of critical point of polynomials are also obtained.

Abstract:The study of the spectrum of coupled random matrices has received rather little attention. To the best of our knowledge, coupled random matrices have been studied, to some extent, by Mehta. In this work, we explain how the integrable technology can be brought to bear to gain insight into the nature of the distribution of the spectrum of coupled Hermitean random matrices and the equations the associated probabilities satisfy. In particular, the two-Toda lattice, its algebra of symmetries and its vertex operators will play a prominent role in this interaction. Namely, the method is to introduce time parameters, in an artificial way, and to dress up a certain matrix integral with a vertex integral operator, for which we find Virasoro-like differential equations. These methods lead to very simple nonlinear third-order partial differential equations for the joint statistics of the spectra of two coupled Gaussian random matrices.

Abstract:We analyse the limiting behavior of the eigenvalue and singular value distribution for random convolution operators on large (not necessarily Abelian) groups, extending the results by M. Meckes for the Abelian case. We show that for regular sequences of groups the limiting distribution of eigenvalues (resp. singular values) is a mixture of eigenvalue (resp. singular value) distributions of Ginibre matrices with the directing measure being related to the limiting behavior of the Plancherel measure of the sequence of groups. In particular for the sequence of symmetric groups, the limiting distributions are just the circular and quarter circular laws, whereas e.g. for the dihedral groups the limiting distributions have unbounded supports but are different than in the Abelian case. We also prove that under additional assumptions on the sequence of groups (in particular for symmetric groups of increasing order) families of stochastically independent random projection operators converge in moments to free circular elements. Finally, in the Gaussian case we provide Central Limit Theorems for linear eigenvalue statistics.

Abstract:We consider products of the matrices associated with the Szegő recursion from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and show that under suitable assumptions, their norms grow exponentially in the number of factors. In the language of dynamical systems, this result expresses a uniform hyperbolicity statement. We present two applications of this result. On the one hand, we identify explicitly the almost sure spectrum of extended CMV matrices with non-negative random Verblunsky coefficients. On the other hand, we show that no Ising model in one dimension exhibits a phase transition. Also, in the case of dynamically generated interaction couplings, we describe a gap labeling theorem for the Lee-Yang zeros in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:We established two-sided Curto-Herrero conjecture for pairs of matrices, where the first matrix has a simple spectrum. Namely, it is shown that these pairs are separated by ranks of non-commutative polynomials in matrices. Moreover, we provided some upper bound on degrees of non-commutative polynomials which should be considered.

The spectrum of a tensor of random and deterministic matrices

Abstract:We consider operator-valued polynomials in Gaussian Unitary Ensemble random matrices and we show that its $L^p$-norm can be upper bounded, up to an asymptotically small error, by the operator norm of the same polynomial evaluated in free semicircular variables as long as $p=o(N^{2/3})$. As a consequence, if the coefficients are $M$-dimensional matrices with $M=\exp(o(N^{2/3}))$, then the operator norm of this polynomial converges towards the one of its free counterpart. In particular this provides another proof of the Peterson-Thom conjecture thanks to the result of Ben Hayes. We also obtain similar results for polynomials in random and deterministic matrices. The approach that we take in this paper is based on an asymptotic expansion obtained by the same author in a previous paper combined with a new result of independent interest on the norm of the composition of the multiplication operator and a permutation operator acting on a tensor of $\mathcal{C}^*$-algebras.

Abstract:Sylvester–Kac matrices are tridiagonal integral matrices with integral spectra or with eigenvalues presenting some kind of regularity. Recently, several results have emerged independently in the literature with spectra having some type of quadratic form. In this note, we review those main results. Using a lower triangular matrix based on the Pascal's triangle, we present an alternative unified approach to them. Ultimately, we provide a simple proof for Sylvester's determinant claim. A comprehensive list of the major historical advances and generalizations, as well as the most recent contributions, is provided at the end.

Abstract:We show that a compact representation of a semisimple Lie group has an orthogonal decomposition into finite length representations. This generalises and simplifies a number of more special spectral theorems in the literature. We apply it to the case of cusp forms, thus settling the spectral theory for the space of non-unitary twisted cusp forms.

Abstract:We consider certain large random matrices, called random inner-product kernel matrices, which are essentially given by a nonlinear function $f$ applied entrywise to a sample-covariance matrix, $f(X^TX)$, where $X \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times N}$ is random and normalized in such a way that $f$ typically has order-one arguments. We work in the polynomial regime, where $N \asymp d^\ell$ for some $\ell > 0$, not just the linear regime where $\ell = 1$. Earlier work by various authors showed that, when the columns of $X$ are either uniform on the sphere or standard Gaussian vectors, and when $\ell$ is an integer (the linear regime $\ell = 1$ is particularly well-studied), the bulk eigenvalues of such matrices behave in a simple way: They are asymptotically given by the free convolution of the semicircular and Marčenko-Pastur distributions, with relative weights given by expanding $f$ in the Hermite basis. In this paper, we show that this phenomenon is universal, holding as soon as $X$ has i.i.d. entries with all finite moments. In the case of non-integer $\ell$, the Marčenko-Pastur term disappears (its weight in the free convolution vanishes), and the spectrum is just semicircular.

Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions

Abstract:Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.

Abstract:The joint moments of the derivatives of the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix, and also a variant of the characteristic polynomial that is real on the unit circle, in the large matrix size limit, have been studied intensively in the past twenty five years, partly in relation to conjectural connections to the Riemann zeta-function and Hardy's function. We completely settle the most general version of the problem of convergence of these joint moments, after they are suitably rescaled, for an arbitrary number of derivatives and with arbitrary positive real exponents. Our approach relies on a hidden, higher-order exchangeable structure, that of an exchangeable array. Using these probabilistic techniques, we then give a combinatorial formula for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotics of the joint moments, when the power on the characteristic polynomial itself is a positive real number and the exponents of the derivatives are integers, in terms of a finite number of finite-dimensional integrals which are explicitly computable. Finally, we develop a method, based on a class of Hankel determinants shifted by partitions, that allows us to give an exact representation of all these joint moments, for finite matrix size, in terms of derivatives of Painlevé V transcendents, and then for the leading order coefficient in the large-matrix limit in terms of derivatives of solutions of the $\sigma$-Painlevé III' equation. Equivalently, we can represent all the joint moments of power sum linear statistics of a certain determinantal point process behind this problem in terms of derivatives of $\sigma$-Painlevé III' transcendents. This gives an efficient way to compute all these quantities explicitly. Our methods can be used to obtain analogous results for a number of other models sharing the same features.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the multivariate version of Christol's theorem about algebraic power series with coefficients in finite fields, as well as of its extension to perfect ground fields of positive characteristic obtained independently by Denef and Lipshitz, Sharif and Woodcok, and Harase. Our proof is elementary, effective, and allows for much sharper estimates. We discuss various applications of such estimates, in particular to a problem raised by Deligne concerning the algebraicity degree of reductions modulo $p$ of diagonals of multivariate algebraic power series with integer coefficients.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 103-131, March 2024. Grigoriev (2001) and Laurent (2003) independently showed that the sum-of-squares hierarchy of semidefinite programs does not exactly represent the hypercube [math] until degree at least [math] of the hierarchy. Laurent also observed that the pseudomoment matrices her proof constructs appear to have surprisingly simple and recursively structured spectra as [math] increases. While several new proofs of the Grigoriev–Laurent lower bound have since appeared, Laurent's observations have remained unproved. We give yet another, representation-theoretic proof of the lower bound, which also yields exact formulas for the eigenvalues of the Grigoriev–Laurent pseudomoments. Using these, we prove and elaborate on Laurent's observations. Our proof shows that the Grigoriev–Laurent pseudomoments are a special case of a Gram matrix construction of pseudomoments proposed by Bandeira and Kunisky (2020). In the course of the proof, we also find a new realization of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to Young diagrams with two rows, as spaces of multivariate polynomials that are multiharmonic with respect to an equilateral simplex.

Abstract:Building on the work of Arizmendi and Celestino (2021), we derive the $*$-distributions of polynomials in monotone independent and infinitesimally monotone independent elements. For non-zero complex numbers $\alpha$ and $\beta$, we derive explicitly the $*$-distribution of $p_{\alpha,\beta}=\alpha ab + \beta ba$ whenever $a$ and $b$ are monotone or infinitesimally monotone independent elements. This encompasses both cases of the commutator and anti-commutator. This approach can be pushed to study more general polynomials. As applications, we derive the limiting distribution with respect to the partial trace of polynomials in a certain class of random matrices.

Abstract:Motivated by studies of oscillator networks, we study the spectrum of the join of several normal matrices with constant row sums. We apply our results to compute the characteristic polynomial of the join of several regular graphs. We then use this theorem to study several problems in spectral graph theory. In particular, we provide some simple constructions of Ramanujan graphs and give new proofs for some theorems in the classical book of Cvetković, Rowlinson, and Slobodan.

Abstract:The first paper in this series introduced a new family of nonasymptotic matrix concentration inequalities that sharply capture the spectral properties of very general Gaussian (as well as non-Gaussian) random matrices in terms of an associated noncommutative model. These methods achieved matching upper and lower bounds for smooth spectral statistics, but only provided upper bounds for the spectral edges. Here we obtain matching lower bounds for the spectral edges, completing the theory initiated in the first paper. The resulting two-sided bounds enable the study of applications that require an exact determination of the spectral edges to leading order, which is fundamentally beyond the reach of classical matrix concentration inequalities. To illustrate their utility, we undertake a detailed study of phase transition phenomena for spectral outliers of nonhomogeneous random matrices.
