Abstract:In this paper we would like to introduce some new methods for studying magic type-colorings of graphs or domination of graphs, based on combinatorial spectrum on polynomial rings. We hope that this concept will be potentially useful for the graph theorists.

Abstract:In this article we are introducing combinatorial spectra of graphs, this is a generalization of $H$-Hamiltonian spectra. The main motivation was to made from $H$-Hamiltonian spectra an operation and develop some algebra in this field. An improved version of this operation form a commutative monoid. The most important thing is that most of the basic concepts of graph theory, such as maximum pairing, vertex and edge connectivity and coloring, Ramsey numbers, isomorphisms and regularity, can be expressed in the language of this operation.
Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials I: The Case of a Single Polynomial

Abstract:There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Abstract:The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.

Abstract:Given a convex polytope, we define its geometric spectrum, a stacky version of Batyrev's stringy E-functions, and we prove a stacky version of a formula of Libgober and Wood about the E-polynomial of a smooth projective variety. As an application, we get a closed formula for the variance of the geometric spectrum and a Noether's formula for two dimensional Fano polytopes (polytopes whose vertices are primitive lattice points). We also show that this geometric spectrum is equal to the algebraic spectrum of the polytope (the spectrum at infinity of a tame Laurent polynomial whose Newton polytope is the polytope alluded to). This gives an explanation and some positive answers to Hertling's conjecture about the variance of the spectrum of tame regular functions.

Abstract:We develop the technique of geometric realizations with algebraically independent (over the field of real algebraic numbers) coordinates of vertices and combine it with the oriented volume method inspired by work of McLennan and Tourky on the Sperner's lemma. This enables us to prove new results: the non-draw property of the generalized Y game, the theorem about triangulation of the product of two simplices, multilabeled Ky Fan' s lemma, and give new proofs of known results: the multilabeled version of Sperner's lemma and generalized Atanassov conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.

Abstract:Chern plethysm (introduced by Billey, Rhoades, and Tewari) is a geometric way to produce Schur positive symmetric polynomials. We present combinatorial interpretations for the Schur expansions of special cases of Chern plethysm. We also exhibit a symmetric group module whose Frobenius characteristic is (a symmetric function analog of) one of these cases, generalizing a result of Reiner and Webb.

Abstract:In this paper we consider coloring problems on graphs and other combinatorial structures on standard Borel spaces. Our goal is to obtain sufficient conditions under which such colorings can be made well-behaved in the sense of topology or measure. To this end, we show that such well-behaved colorings can be produced using certain powerful techniques from finite combinatorics and computer science. First, we prove that efficient distributed coloring algorithms (on finite graphs) yield well-behaved colorings of Borel graphs of bounded degree; roughly speaking, deterministic algorithms produce Borel colorings, while randomized algorithms give measurable and Baire-measurable colorings. Second, we establish measurable and Baire-measurable versions of the Symmetric Lovász Local Lemma (under the assumption $\mathsf{p}(\mathsf{d}+1)^8 \leq 2^{-15}$, which is stronger than the standard LLL assumption $\mathsf{p}(\mathsf{d} + 1) \leq e^{-1}$ but still sufficient for many applications). From these general results, we derive a number of consequences in descriptive combinatorics and ergodic theory.

Abstract:We introduce a geometric method to study additive combinatorial problems. Using equivariant cohomology we reprove the Dias da Silva–Hamidoune theorem. We improve a result of Sun on the linear extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture. We generalize a theorem of G. Kós (the Grashopper problem) which in some sense is a simultaneous generalization of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture. We also prove a signed version of the Erdős—Heilbronn conjecture and the Grashopper problem. Most identities used are based on calculating the projective degree of an algebraic variety in two different ways.

A Polynomial Method for Counting Colorings of Sparse Graphs

Abstract:The notion of $S$-labeling of graphs, where $S$ is a subset of a symmetric group, was introduced in 2019 by Jin, Wong, and Zhu. This notion provides the framework for a common generalization of various well studied notions of graph coloring, including classical coloring, signed $k$-coloring, signed $\mathbb{Z}_k$-coloring, DP (or correspondence) coloring, group coloring, and coloring of gained graphs. In this paper, we present a unified and simple polynomial method for giving exponential lower bounds on the number of colorings of an $S$-labeled graph for all such $S$. This algebraic technique allows us to prove new lower bounds on the number of colorings of any $S$-labeling of graphs satisfying certain sparsity conditions. We also investigate how the structure of $S$ can be exploited to improve the applicability of these bounds. Our results give new lower bounds on the number of DP-colorings, and consequently the number of all types of colorings listed above. This includes the chromatic polynomial and the number of list colorings of families of planar graphs, and the number of colorings of signed graphs. These enumerative bounds improve previously known results or are the first such known results.

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

On singular pencils with commuting coefficients

Abstract:We investigate the relation between the spectrum of matrix (or operator) polynomials and the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. We prove that the polynomial of commuting matrices is singular, i.e. its spectrum is the whole complex plane, if and only if (0, 0, ... , 0) belongs to the Taylor spectrum of its coefficients. On the other hand we prove that this equivalence is not longer true if we consider the operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert space as coefficients of polynomial. As a consequence we could propose a new description of (Taylor) spectrum of k-tuple of matrices and we could disprove the conjecture previously proposed in the literature. Additionally, we pointed out the Kronecker forms of the pencils with commuting coefficients.

Abstract:As one of the first applications of the polynomial method in combinatorics, Alon and Tarsi proved that if certain coefficients of the graph polynomial are non-zero, then the graph is choosable, i.e., colorable from any assignment of lists of prescribed size. We show that in case all relevant coefficients are zero, then further coefficients of the graph polynomial provide constraints on the list assignments from which the graph cannot be colored. This often enables us to confirm colorability from a given list assignment, or to decide choosability by testing just a few list assignments. We also describe an efficient way to implement this approach, making it feasible to test choosability of graphs with around 70 edges.

Abstract:In 1966, David Mumford created a drawing of $\operatorname{Proj} \mathbb Z [X,Y]$ in his book, "Lectures on Curves on an Algebraic Surface". In following, he created a photo of a so-called 'arithmetic surface' $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$for his 1988 book, "The Red Book of Varieties and Schemes". The depiction presents the structure of $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$ as being interesting and pleasant and is a well-known picture in algebraic geometry. Taking inspiration from Mumford, we create a drawing similar to $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z_p [T]$, which has a lot of similarities with $\operatorname{Spec} \mathbb Z [T]$.

Abstract:In enumerative combinatorics, it is often a goal to enumerate both labeled and unlabeled structures of a given type. The theory of combinatorial species is a novel toolset which provides a rigorous foundation for dealing with the distinction between labeled and unlabeled structures. The cycle index series of a species encodes the labeled and unlabeled enumerative data of that species. Moreover, by using species operations, we are able to solve for the cycle index series of one species in terms of other, known cycle indices of other species. Section 3 is an exposition of species theory and Section 4 is an enumeration of point-determining bipartite graphs using this toolset. In Section 5, we extend a result about point-determining graphs to a similar result for point-determining {\Phi}-graphs, where {\Phi} is a class of graphs with certain properties. Finally, Appendix A is an expository on species computation using the software Sage [9] and Appendix B uses Sage to calculate the cycle index series of point-determining bipartite graphs.

Degree spectra of homeomorphism types of compact Polish spaces

Abstract:A Polish space is not always homeomorphic to a computably presented Polish space. In this article, we examine degrees of non-computability of presenting homeomorphic copies of compact Polish spaces. We show that there exists a $0'$-computable low$_3$ compact Polish space which is not homeomorphic to a computable one, and that, for any natural number $n\geq 2$, there exists a Polish space $X_n$ such that exactly the high$_{n}$-degrees are required to present the homeomorphism type of $X_n$. We also show that no compact Polish space has a least presentation with respect to Turing reducibility. The first version of this article appeared in April 2020. A major update was made in September 2023, with improved proofs and results. This is the final version from January 2024, with more results on Čech homology groups.
