Abstract:Phase retrieval is an attractive optical testing method with a simple experimental arrangement. The sampling grids wave propagation computation based on the FFT operations is usually involved in each iterative process for the classical phase retrieval model. In this paper, a novel non-propagation optimization phase retrieval technique with the FFT-based basis function is proposed to accelerate wavefront measurement. The sampling grids wave diffraction propagation computation is converted to matrix-vector products that have small dimensions to reduce the computational burden. The diffraction basis function based on generalized numerical orthogonal polynomial and two-step Fresnel propagation is deduced, which is suitable for the generally shaped pupil. This paper provides a universal non-propagation framework to accelerate phase retrieval which is applicable to the arbitrarily shaped wavefront measurement.

Abstract:The non-perfect determined amplitude distribution in the pupil would affect the convergence speed and accuracy of phase retrieval method, which depends on the amplitude of fields to reconstruct the phase. In this paper, we propose two kinds of phase retrieval methods based on hybrid point-polynomial and point-by-point nonlinear optimization algorithms to reconstruct simultaneously the amplitude and phase of the wavefront. Intensity quantized errors are avoided by using modified first derivatives. For simple and general wavefront testing, the accuracy and robustness of proposed algorithms are verified both numerically and experimentally.

Abstract:The random selection of phase mask parameters will cause the degradation of imaging quality, which can be fixed through the optimization process. We introduce an evaluation function based on the use of multitarget optimization to obtain optimal phase mask parameters. The proposed method gives the optimal phase mask parameters, which produce together an imaging quality at all defocus positions as best as possible. The cubic phase mask and the general cubic phase mask are both used to perform optimization with a proposed evaluation function. Abstract:The aliasing effect in the discrete Fourier transform inherent will impose a serious detrimental effect on conventional phase retrieval measurement accuracy with under-sampled intensity. In this Letter, we describe a modal-based nonlinear optimization phase retrieval approach that is capable of retrieving wavefront measurements using under-sampled intensities. The extended Nijboer-Zernike theory is introduced to establish an analytic solution between wavefront phase and intensity image, and then nonlinear optimization is further utilized to solve wavefront aberration coefficients from under-sampled intensity data. The feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm are verified by simulations and experiments. This is a promising method that is especially suitable for full field phase recovery of optical systems with a relatively high numerical aperture.

Abstract:Traditional phase retrieval methods for Ronchi lateral shearing interferometry eliminate the impact of high diffraction orders by increasing the number of phase-shifting interferograms, however, this introduces additional error in the phase-shifting process. We propose an optimization method combining a 2-frame phase-shifting algorithm to achieve accurate wavefront reconstruction. A numerical model matching the physical model is constructed and the cross-iterative gradient descent method is used to optimize the initial results obtained by the two-step phase-shifting method. The accuracy and robustness of the method are verified by simulations and experiments. The proposed method has the advantages of achieving high-precision wavefront reconstruction and correcting the phase-shifting errors, and it significantly simplifies the process of phase shift.

Abstract:Phase retrieval (PR) is widely applied in wavefront sensing for adaptive optics, diagnosing the aberrations, and wavefront measurement of optics elements. A single lens is often used in PR models to achieve better transmission of optical radiation thereby avoiding loss of high frequency information. In this paper, the sampling requirement of PR wavefront measurement model based on numerical Fourier optical theory is analyzed clearly. First, combined with the Fresnel diffraction theory, the diffraction field of the wavefront after passing through the lens is established. Next, according to the Nyquist sampling theorem, the sampling requirements for the phase factor of wavefront spatial frequency are deduced. Further, according to the relationship between the pixel size of CCD and the sampling pitch of pupil surface, the constraints and applicable range of PR model based on various diffraction transform are discussed quantitatively. The numerical simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of PR model based on the GS algorithm within the analyzed diffraction constraints, which shows that the recovery accuracy of the PR model can reach 0.0025 λ. The established sampling strategy and the constraint theory in this paper would provide a theoretical guidance for full-band wavefront measurement of the PR technology.

Abstract:In the Multi-intensities phase retrieval processing, the measurement uncertainty of the defocus distance undermines its measurement accuracy. In this paper, using a general phase retrieval experimental arrangement, we propose an adaptive autofocusing nonlinear optimization phase retrieval algorithm based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike (ENZ) theory. This method concurrently accomplishes correction of defocusing position error and the wavefront measurement requiring without additional facility. The numerical experiments show that the proposed method accuracy searching for the optimal defocusing position is superior to 10 μm among different measurement planes. The numerical experiments show that the wavefront measurement accuracy with the proposed method is superior to λ/100 , RMSE.

Abstract:Recently, phase retrieval techniques have garnered significant attention with their exceptional flexibility. However, their application is limited in optical systems with high numerical aperture due to the disregarded polarization properties of the beam. In this paper, a fast wavefront sensing method for tightly focused systems is proposed. Firstly, a vector diffraction model based on the chirp-Z transform is established to analytically describe the focal spot using the modal coefficients of polynomials and diffraction basis vectors, which accommodating any pixel size and resolution, thereby enabling to break through sampling constraints and remove lateral errors. Additionally, a modified Newton-gradient second-order algorithm is introduced to simultaneously optimize wavefront in multiple polarization directions, without the need for diffraction operators during iterations. Both numerical simulations and error analysis confirm the efficacy and precision of the proposed wavefront sensing method.

Abstract:Phase diversity (PD), proposed by Gonsalves, is a kind of wavefront sensing technique based on measurement of two or more images of object. The optical system involved is relatively simple. It makes use of the methods of optimization and image processing, which can jointly estimate phase aberration as well as object itself simultaneously. The most significant characteristic of this technique is that it works well with extended scenes. Steepest descent method and conjugate gradient method both are preferable algorithms for nonlinear optimization. As a matter of fact, any one of two methods has some limitations. Steepest descent method is a local property and conjugate gradient method's convergence rate is slow. Combining two methods to develop a mixed algorithm, we can avoid entrapping into a local minimum and raise global convergence rate. Simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid algorithm has the features of quick convergence rate, comparatively large convergence range, which make the method of phase diversity remarkably robust and numerically efficient.

Abstract:In optical imaging systems, the aberration is an important factor that impedes realising diffraction-limited imaging. Accurate wavefront sensing and control play important role in modern high-resolution optical imaging systems nowadays. In this study, a simple model-based phase retrieval algorithm is proposed for accurate efficient wavefront sensing with high dynamic range. In the authors' algorithm, a wavefront is represented by the Zernike polynomials, and the Zernike coefficients are solved by the least-squares-based non-linear optimisation method, i.e. the Lederberg-Marquardt algorithm, with multiple phase-diversity images. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithm is capable of retrieving wavefront with a large dynamic range up to seven wavelength and robust to noise. In comparison, the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the existing model-based technique and more accurate than existing Fourier - transformation-based iterative techniques.
Optimization of Transverse Translation Diverse Phase Retrieval for Optical Elements with Mid-Spatial Frequency Errors

Abstract:During the fabricating procedure of optical elements, computer-controlled tools will introduce some periodic structured errors, named mid-spatial frequency errors, which may scatter the laser beams, create filamentous spots or even damage the optical components in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) high power laser system. Transverse translation diverse phase retrieval (TTDPR) is an ingenious phase retrieval method for measuring aspheric and freeform surfaces. In this paper, we explore the measurement of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency errors by using TTDPR. First, we briefly introduce the features of mid-spatial frequency errors and establish the relation between mid-spatial frequency errors and diffraction pattern. Second, with the knowledge of the mid-spatial frequency error, we analyze the feasibility of optical elements with mid-spatial frequency error measurement by using TTDPR. In order to improve the convergence and measurement accuracy of phase retrieval algorithm, initial inputs are optimized for the following iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Results indicate that a 50% higher reconstruction accuracy can be achieved, when the initial input is the ideal lens to recover the phase of lens with mid-spatial frequency errors. For TTDPR, sub-aperture illuminated with overlapping part among adjacent sub-apertures will improve accuracy of iterative phase algorithm than never overlapped sub-aperture, while it encumbers the efficiency of iterative phase retrieval algorithm. Based on the characteristics of the particular optical surfaces, the influence of major parameter of sub-aperture including the size of sub-aperture and the overlapped proportion among adjacent sub-aperture to accuracy and efficiency of TTDPR are also discussed.

Abstract:Phase diversity phase retrieval (PDPR) has been a popular technique for quantitatively measuring wavefront errors of optical imaging systems by extracting the phase information from several designated intensity measurements. As the problem is inverse and non-convex in general, the accuracy and robustness of most such algorithms rely greatly on the initial conditions. In this work, we propose a new strategy that combines Limited-Memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (L-BFGS) with the initial points generated by k-means clustering method and three various channels to improve the overall performance. Experimental results show that, for 500 different phase aberrations with root mean square (RMS) value bounded within [0.2λ, 0.3λ], the minimum, the maximum and the mean RMS residual errors reach 0.017λ, 0.066λ and 0.039λ, respectively, and 84.8% of the RMS residual errors are less than 0.05λ. We have further investigated and analyzed the proposed method in details to quantitatively demonstrate its performance: statistical results reveal that our proposed PDPR with k-means clustering enhanced method has excellent robustness in terms of initial points and other influential factors, and the accuracy can outperform its counterpart methods such as classic L-BFGS and modified BFGS.

Abstract:Phase Diversity (PD) is a kind of wavefront sensing technology based on image collecting and restoration. Two images are collected with different defocus values, and the Zernike coefficients of the system wavefront can be solved. This paper focuses on the algorithm of PD technology and image restoration. Several kinds of wavefront aberration and different defocus distance are also introduced to verify the robustness of the algorithm. Results show that the maximum wavefront aberration introduced is 1.5851 lambda (RMS) when the residual error of calculation required is less than lambda/50 (RMS), and the residual error reaches minimum when the Zernike coefficient variation induced by defocus is 1 lambda. Also, the Structural Similarity (SSIM) is selected to evaluate the quality of restored images.

Abstract:Parameters mismatching between the real optical system and phase retrieval model undermines wavefront reconstruction accuracy. The three-dimensional intensity position is corrected in phase retrieval, which is traditionally separated from lateral position correction and axial position correction. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional intensity position correction method for phase diverse phase retrieval with the cross-iteration nonlinear optimization strategy. The intensity position is optimized via the coarse optimization method at first, then the intensity position is cross-optimized in the iterative wavefront reconstruction process with the exact optimization method. The analytic gradients about the three-dimensional intensity position are derived. The cross-iteration optimization strategy avoids the interference between the incomplete position correction and wavefront reconstruction during the iterative process. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are verified both numerically and experimentally. The proposed method achieves robust and accurate intensity position correction and wavefront reconstruction, which is available for wavefront measurement and phase imaging.

Abstract:The presence of manufacture error in large mirrors introduces high-order aberrations, which can severely influence the intensity distribution of point spread function. Therefore, high-resolution phase diversity wavefront sensing is usually needed. However, high-resolution phase diversity wavefront sensing is restricted with the problem of low efficiency and stagnation. This paper proposes a fast high-resolution phase diversity method with limited memory Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (L-BFGS) algorithm, which can accurately detect aberrations in the presence of high-order aberrations. An analytical gradient of the objective function for phase-diversity is integrated into the framework of the L-BFGS nonlinear optimization algorithm. L-BFGS algorithm is specifically suitable for high-resolution wavefront sensing where a large phase matrix is optimized. The performance of phase diversity with L-BFGS is compared to other iterative method through simulations and a real experiment. This work contributes to fast high-resolution image-based wavefront sensing with a high robustness.

Abstract:Encoding is an indispensable procedure in general phase measurement, and it is usually performed with a deterministic unitary transformation between the initial probe state and the final state. In order to improve the measurement precision, many studies focus on the optimization of the initial probe state. In this paper, we propose a scheme of subtracting one photon from the output state of an SU(1,1) interferometer. In addition to improving the output state, we find that this scheme can be used to optimize the encoding procedure. The performance of this type of optimization is only strong when the phase-sensitive negativity is induced in the Wigner function of the equivalent probe state. If a nearly perfect single-photon detector is used for the singlephoton subtraction operation, the phase sensitivity within a narrow phase range can surpass 1/(./nu N), where N is the mean number of photons inside the SU(1,1) interferometer, and nu is the number of copies of the Gaussian probe state.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate light propagation sets the foundations for optical communication and information processing systems. With the ever-growing data capacity and data rate, photonic integrated circuits have attracted increasing attentions of researchers owing to their large-volume integration capacity and fast operation speed. In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new wavefront shaping method using waveguide arrays with hyperbolic secant refractive index profiles. Through theoretically analyzing the diffraction and coherence properties, we found that a single waveguide array can perform both imaging and phase transformation, which are the two primary functions of optical lenses. We further expanded this function and fabricated the corresponding devices on a silicon nitride waveguide platform. Deterministic beam shaping, such as focusing, expansion, collimation, and steering, is successfully realized. This wavefront control method exhibits the potential for on-chip optical routing, ranging, sensing, etc., with high integration density and scalability.

Abstract:Wavefront phase retrieval from a set of intensity measurements can be formulated as an optimization problem. Two nonconvex models (MLP and its variant LS) based on maximum likelihood estimation are investigated in this paper. We derive numerical optimization algorithms for real-valued function of complex variables and apply them to solve the wavefront phase retrieval problem efficiently. Numerical simulation is given with application to three test examples. The LS model shows better numerical performance than that of the MLP model. An explanation for this is that the distribution of the eigenvalues of Hessian matrix of the LS model is more clustered than that of the MLP model. We find that the LBFGS method shows more robust performance and takes fewer calculations than other line search methods for this problem.
