Abstract:Numerous studies have highlighted the implication of oral microbiota in various cancers. However, no bibliometric analysis has been conducted on the relationship between oral microbiota and cancer. This bibliometric analysis aimed to identify the research hotspots in oral microbiota and cancer research, as well as predict future research trends. The literature published relating to oral microbiota and cancer was searched from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) from 2013 to 2022. VOSviewer or Citespace software was used to perform the bibliometric analysis, focusing on countries, institutions, authors, journals, keywords and references. A total of 1516 publications were included in the analysis. The number of publications related oral microbiota and cancer increased annually, reaching its peak in 2022 with 287 papers. The United States (456) and China (370) were the countries with the most publications and made significant contributions to the field. Sears CL and Zhou XD were the most productive authors. The high frequency of keywords revealed key topics, including cancer (colorectal cancer, oral cancer), oral microbiota ( Fusobacterium nucleatum , Porphyromonas gingivalis ), and inflammation (periodontal disease). The latest trend keywords were F. nucleatum , dysbiosis, prognosis, tumor microenvironment, gastric microbiota, complications and survival, suggesting a new hotspot in the field of oral microbiota and cancer. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of oral microbiota and cancer research, revealing an increase in publications in recent years. Future research directions will continue to focus on the diversity of oral microbiota impacted by cancers and the underlying mechanism connecting them, providing new ideas for targeted therapy of tumorigenesis.

Abstract:Background Esophageal cancer is currently a worldwide health problem. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most common pathological type of esophageal cancer, and its treatment methods and therapeutic effects are relatively limited, so it also requires the unremitting efforts of basic and clinical researchers to overcome difficulties. Bibliometric analysis can help sort out global research trends and hotspots, but no bibliometric analysis of ESCC has been reported. Therefore, we performed this study to analyze the global trends and potential hotspots of ESCC to indicate future research directions. Methods The articles related to ESCC research were collected from the WoS Core Collection SCI-EXPANDED database from 2012 to 2022. The article information was analyzed by BiblioShiny and VOSviewer. Results were presented as bar and network visualization to describe the current trend of ESCC research. This was a retrospective study evaluating data that is publicly available online and at libraries and institutional review board approval, as such, was not demanded. Results The global publication trend illustrated a strong growth in the ESCC research field (annual growth rate of 11.4%) and the citation trend increased from an average of 2.98 citations per article per year in 2012 to an average of 3.84 citations per article per year in 2019. With the corresponding author’s country, China contributed the largest number (5,063 articles). The scholars from China and USA had the most collaboration (427 times). China had the largest number of institutions conducting ESCC research. Oncotarget, Oncology Letters, and Annals of Surgical Oncology published the most articles, while Cancer Research, International Journal of Cancer, and Journal of Clinical Oncology had the most local citations. Furthermore, the clinical research hotspots involved in the treatment of ESCC and the basic research hotspots involved in tumor malignant phenotype have received the most attention in recent years. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that the research of ESCC has developed rapidly in recent years, and the academic institutions in China have played a decisive role in this field. The global research purpose is to find effective therapies against ESCC, so some emerging hotspots related to ESCC treatment, such as endoscopic therapy, chemoradiotherapy, immunotherapy, tumor microenvironment, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition will receive more attention and develop rapidly in the future.

Global research trends between gut microbiota and lung cancer from 2011 to 2022: A bibliometric and visualization analysis

Abstract:Background An increasing number of studies have found that the gut microbiota was related to the occurrence and development of lung cancer. Nonetheless, publication trends and research hotspots in this field remain unknown. The study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis to systematically identify publication trends and research hotspots in the field of gut microbiota and lung cancer research within a 12-year panorama. Methods Publications related to the gut microbiota and lung cancer between 1 January 2011 and 25 October 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The online analytic tool of the WoSCC was used to analyze various bibliometric parameters. The bibliometrics website, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer were used to identify research trends and hotspots. Results A total of 375 publications related to the gut microbiota and lung cancer were extracted from WoSCC and identified for analysis. The number of annual publications has grown rapidly since 2018 and reached a peak in 2022. China was the most prolific country in this field, with 120 publications, followed by the United States (114), with the highest H-index of 31. Additionally, France ranked the highest with an average of 133 citations, while the leading institution and journal were the Unicancer and the International Journal of Molecular Sciences , respectively. Interestingly, Routy Bertrand was the most prolific author and also the most cited author in terms of H-index and citations. Reference and keyword burst detection indicated that the research hotspots mainly included 1) the gut microbiota directly affects the efficacy of immunotherapy for lung cancer, 2) the application of different gut bacteria on lung cancer, and 3) the mechanism of the gut microbiota on lung cancer. Conclusion The findings of this study revealed the general publication trends and evolving research hotspots in the field of gut microbiota and lung cancer at a global level. The research hotspots focused on the clinical application of the gut microbiota combined with immunotherapy in lung cancer and its mechanism. The findings of this study provide new perspectives on the field, which may shed light on a beneficial impact on further etiological studies, diagnosis, and treatment for lung cancer.

Abstract:Numerous papers have been published on the microbiota in lung cancer in recent years. However, there is still a lack of bibliometric analysis of the microbiota in lung cancer in this field. Our paper did bibliometric analyses and elucidated the knowledge structure and study hotspots related to the microbiota in lung cancer patients. We screened publications reporting on the microbiota in lung cancer from 2008 to 2023 from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, and carried out bibliometric analyses by the application of the VOSviewers, CiteSpace and R package "bibliometrix." The 684 documents enrolled in the analysis were obtained from 331 institutions in 67 regions by 4,661 authors and were recorded in 340 journals. Annual papers are growing rapidly, and the countries of China, the United States and Italy are contributing the most to this area of research. Zhejiang University is the main research organization. Science and Cancer had significant impacts on this area. Zhang Yan had the most articles, and the Bertrand Routy had the most co-cited times. Exploring the mechanism of action of the lung and/or gut microbiota in lung cancer and therapeutic strategies involving immune checkpoint inhibitors in lung cancer are the main topics. Moreover, "gut microbiota," "immunotherapy," and "short-chain fatty acids" are important keywords for upcoming study hotspots. In conclusion, microbiota research offers promising opportunities in lung cancer, with pivotal studies exploring the mechanisms that link lung and gut microbiota to therapeutic strategies, particularly through immune checkpoint inhibitors. Moreover, the gut-lung axis emerges as a novel target for innovative treatments. Further research is essential to unravel the detailed mechanisms of this connection.

Abstract:Purpose: The primary goal of this study was to assess the growth, most influential articles, countries, journals, authors, and papers published in the field of global oral cancer. Research articles on oral cancer, published between 1989 and 2022, were identified through the Web of Science database to achieve this. Methods: A comprehensive dataset comprising 7,178 documents was meticulously extracted from the Web of Science, forming the basis for scientometric analysis. A refined subset of 4,901 documents was judiciously selected following a rigorous screening process for meticulous, in-depth analysis. Results: The field has witnessed a remarkable publication surge, with the United States taking the lead in productivity. The journal Oral Oncology has become the foremost publication, renowned for its prolific output and widespread citation. This trend highlights the growing importance and interest in this domain, with researchers and experts worldwide contributing to the expanding body of knowledge. The United States' dominance in productivity suggests its strong commitment to advancing research in the field, while Oral Oncology's recognition underscores its influential role in disseminating cutting-edge findings and fostering scientific progress. The global landscape and research trend of lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer: a bibliometric analysis and visualization

Abstract:Background: Breast cancer persists as a major public health issue on a global scale. Lymphangiogenesis is an indispensable element in the promotion of breast cancer metastasis. Inhibiting the metastasis of breast cancer can be accomplished through targeting lymphangiogenesis. The purpose of this study was to examine research trends, major topics, and development directions of lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer through a bibliometric analysis, which may serve as a reference for future research and clinical practice. Methods: English publications with article type article or review about lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer from inception to September 30, 2023, retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection Database (WOSCC), and VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Microsoft Excel were applied for bibliometric study. Results: In this paper, a total of 369 articles and reviews were included. The 369 papers were written by 2120 authors from 553 organizations across 42 countries, published in 199 journals, and cited 12458 references from 1801 journals up to September 30, 2023. Moreover, the annual publications had a rising trajectory between 2004 to 2014 but declined from 2015. The US was the leading nation in publications and citations. Meanwhile, academics Mousumi Majumder and Peeyush Lala had the highest cumulative number of publications. Based on the number of publications/citations, Cancer Research was the most influential journal. The most cited paper was "Lymphangiogenesis: Molecular Mechanisms and Future Promise" by Tuomas Tammela, published in the Journal of Cell. Additionally, keywords frequency analysis demonstrated that "lymphangiogenesis," "breast cancer," "VEGF-C," "angiogenesis," and "metastasis" were the most frequent keywords, and the newly emergent topics could be represented by "tumor microenvironment," "metastasis," "stem-cell," "triple-negative breast cancer," and "blood vessels." Conclusions: Currently, there is a strong research basis for lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer. The core research team was primarily situated in the US. Investigating the mechanism of lymphangiogenesis in breast cancer will always remain a highly discussed topic. In particular, it was essential to emphasize the relationship between lymphangiogenesis and tumor microenvironment, stem cells, triple-negative breast cancer, and metastasis, which could be the frontiers.
Global research trends and hotspots on smoking and lung cancer from 1994-2023: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Lung cancer is a significant cause of mortality, especially among smokers. Lung cancer and smoking are strongly associated, according to numerous studies. Methods: Publications related to smoking and lung cancer were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database of the Web of Science Core Collection for the period 1994-2023. Descriptive and visual analyses were performed on the topics, journals, countries, institutions, authors, and citations of the publications. Results: A total of 728 articles were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) SCIE database for the period January 1994 to December 2023, and the number of publications in the relevant literature demonstrated a progressive increase with time. A total of 647 articles were classified as experimental, while 81 were classified as reviews. The studies were published in 200 journals. The three journals that published the most articles were the American Journal of Epidemiology with 82 articles, Lung Cancer with 34 articles, and Cancer Causes and Control with 26 articles. The three most prolific countries were the United States (286 articles, 38.3%; 15879 citations), China (116 articles, 15.9%; 2911 citations), and France (75 articles, 10.3%; 3694 citations). The four most popular keywords in this field are 'early cancer detection', 'experimental', 'CT', and 'survival rate'. Conclusions: The findings of our study revealed key areas for focus in smoking and lung cancer research, having a view of supplying important data and motivation for further investigations.

Abstract:Objective: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used as a complementary treatment for cancer patients, but there has been no quantitative comprehensive analysis of TCM's efficacy. The purpose of this paper is to explore the current status and hotspots of TCM in cancer research from 2002 to 2022 and to provide a reference for future research. Methods: We retrieved articles published between 2002 and 2022 from the Web of Science database and analyzed them using R software, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace software. Results: A total of 7,129 articles were included in this study. The publication rate of TCM cancer research increased steadily from 2002 to 2022, with a rapid increase from 2010 to 2021. China was the country with the most published articles, followed by the United States, Republic of Korea, Germany, and Japan. China was also the country with the most international collaborations, and China Medical University and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were the most representative cooperation centers. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology was the most published and cited journal. Apoptosis, expression, in vitro , activation, and other related keywords were commonly used in these articles. Breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer, and lung cancer were the most studied cancer types in TCM research. Pathway-related apoptosis, anti-inflammation, and oxidative stress were the hotspots and trends of TCM's anti-cancer mechanism. Metabolomics combined with network pharmacology was the main research method. Conclusion: Traditional Chinese medicine as an anti-cancer drug has received increasing attention from researchers worldwide, and it is expected to be a hotspot for developing new anti-cancer drugs in the future. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of the current status and hotspots of TCM cancer research, which could serve as a valuable reference for future studies.

Abstract:The oral microbiome contains numerous bacteria, which directly or indirectly participate in various human functions and continuously exchange signals and substances with the human body, significantly affecting human life cycle, health, and disease. This study aimed to conduct bibliometric studies on the scientific outputs of global oral microbiome research by Citespace software. The data were obtained from the Thomson Reuters' Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), from the first relevant literature published until December 31st, 2019, and a total of 2225 articles and reviews were identified. The top country and institutions are the United States and Harvard University. Keywords analysis showed that periodontal disease, oral microbes, and dental plaque are research hotspots. The burst word analysis indicates that early childhood caries, squamous cell carcinoma, gut microbiome, Helicobacter pylori, Candida albicans, and dysbiosis are likely to become the research hotspots of the next era. We also recommend the use of knowledge mapping methods to track specific knowledge areas efficiently and objectively regularly, which can accurately identify hotspots and frontiers and provide valuable information for practitioners in the field, including related scientists, students, journals, and editors.

Abstract:Background: Lung cancer (LC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, which seriously threatens human life and health as well as brings a heavy burden to the society. In recent years, the tumor microenvironment (TME) has become an emerging research field and hotspot affecting tumor pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches. However, to date, there has been no bibliometric analysis of lung cancer and the tumor microenvironment from 2014 to 2023.This study aims to comprehensively summarize the current situation and development trends in the field from a bibliometric perspective. Methods: The publications about lung cancer and the tumor microenvironment from 2014 to 2023 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The Microsoft Excel, Origin, R-bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software are comprehensively used to scientifically analyze the data. Results: Totally, 763 publications were identified in this study. A rapid increase in the number of publications was observed after 2018. More than 400 organizations published these publications in 36 countries or regions. China and the United States have significant influence in this field. Zhou, CC and Frontiers in Immunology are the most productive authors and journals respectively. Besides, the most frequently cited references were those on lung cancer pathogenesis, clinical trials, and treatment modalities. It suggests that novel lung cancer treatment models mainly based on the TME components, such as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) may lead to future research trends. Conclusions: The field of lung cancer and the tumor microenvironment research is still in the beginning stages. Gene expression, molecular pathways, therapeutic modalities, and novel detection technologies in this field have been widely studied by researchers. This is the first bibliometric study to comprehensively summarize the research trend and development regarding lung cancer and tumor microenvironment over the last decade. The result of our research provides the updated perspective for scholars to understand the key information and cutting-edge hotspots in this field, as well as to identify future research directions.

Abstract:Scientometric analysis of a disease is often conducted to recognize research hotspots and investigate latest trends. In this brief report, we provide a scientometric overview of oral cancer research in Taiwan and mainland China. There were 1924 and 3853 articles on oral cancer research originating from Taiwan and mainland China, respectively. In Taiwan, the risk factors including areca/betel quid chewing, tobacco smoking, and alcohol use were the distinctive keywords. For basic research, genotype, reactive oxygen, p53, mitochondria and caspase-9 were the distinctive keywords. In mainland China, experiment methods such as genetic transfection, gene silencing, colony formation, tumor xenograft were the distinctive keywords. Epithelial mesenchymal transition, long untranslated RNA, protein function, uvomorulin, and Bcl-2 were the distinctive keywords of basic research. Collectively, we hope that these scientometric characteristics will aid clinicians and researchers for obtaining information on oral cancer and can be of guidance for future studies.

Abstract:Objective: Exploring the different molecular and clinicopathological features of nodal cancer based on single cell sequencing can reveal the intertumoral heterogeneity in cancer, and provide new ideas for early diagnosis, treatment and prognosis analysis of cancer. Methods: The hotspots, the features of worldwide scientific output, and the frontiers concerning single cell sequence related to cancer from 2011 to 2024 were determined using our bibliometric analysis. Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database was searched for publications on single cell sequence associated with cancer that were published between 2011 and 2024. According to the journals, keywords, number of records, affiliations, citations, and countries, we conducted a bibliometric analysis. With the use of the data gathered from the WOSCC, geographic distribution was visualized, keyword, affiliation, and author cluster analyses were conducted, and co-cited references were reviewed and a descriptive analysis was also performed. Results: From the analysis, it was concluded that 6189 articles that were published between 2011 and 2024 in total were identified. Frontiers in immunology is the leading journal with the most publications in field of the research. The five clusters that were identified for hotspots included immunotherapy, single-cell RNA sequencing, hepatocellular carcinoma, proliferation, gene expression appeared the most frequently. Journals, nations, organizations, scholars with most contribution and most referenced publications globally were extracted. Studies have mostly concentrated on the spatial transcriptomics, pan-cancer analysis, hepatocellular carcinoma et al. Conclusion: Single-cell sequencing plays a significant role in tumor diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to make a bibliometric analysis of anticancer research literature based on the data from the Web of Science. Anticancer drug research references published from 2000 to 2014 were used. Citespace software was employed to generate the knowledge maps of country/institution, cited authors, cited journals, co-words and cited references related with anticancer drug research. Results of this analysis indicated that the USA is the most productive country and the Chinese Acad. Sci. is the most productive institution in this field. Maeda H is the most influential author, leading the highest citation author group. “CANCER RES” is the most cited journal in which the most influential anticancer drug research articles were published. Mosmann’s (1983) paper is a representative and symbolic reference with the highest co-citation of number of 146 (centrality 0.29). The five hot anticancer drug research topics were also disclosed; they are: (1) chemotherapy drugs, (2) drug delivery, (3) bioscreening, (4) drug resistance research, and (5) enzyme inhibitor studies. Research frontiers identified included drug delivery with nanoparticles, controlled release, metabolism and so on. These analyses will be valuable for the reader to grasp an overall picture of anticancer research and research trends during these years.

Abstract:Tongue cancer, one of the most common malignant cancers of the oral cavity, still affects human health worldwide due to its disappointing survival rates, despite significant developments in its multimodality treatment. The predominant cause of death in patients with tongue cancer is the high occurrence of invasion to surrounding tissues, lymph and distant metastasis, and recurrence. Due to the limited value of conventional predictive and prognostic factors and the uniformity of treatment strategies, several patients are still over- or under-treated, with significantly personal and socioeconomic impact. This review focuses on some promising predictive and prognostic biomarkers of tongue cancer and their actual/potential clinical implications, in order to provide clinicians with useful information for the improvement of early diagnostic/prognostic evaluation and management of patients with tongue cancer.

Materials and methods: The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC; Clarivate) database was searched, VOSviewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1.R2 software were employed for the quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results: 12,268 publications were included in this bibliometric analysis. There was an increasing trend of publications and international collaborations in the topic. The United States and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center were the most productive countries and institutions, respectively. The analysis of journals showed researches focused on both basic and clinical medicine on breast cancer RT. Park Won published the most papers and Fisher B had the most co-citations. The most co-cited paper was published in the Lancet. Survival, risk, chemotherapy, mastectomy, and surgery were regarded as current research hotspots through the analysis of keywords. Conclusion: Through quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analyses, this study provides insights into the research trends and potential research hotspots on breast cancer RT.

Abstract:Introduction: Extensive studies indicated that caveolin is a key regulator in multiple cellular processes. Recently, growing evidence demonstrated that caveolin is critically involved in tumor progression. Since no relevant bibliometric study has been published, we performed a bibliometric and visual analysis to depict the knowledge framework of research related to the involvement of caveolin in cancer. Methods: Relevant studies published in English during 2003–2022 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Three programs (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R- bibliometrix ) and the website of bibliometrics (http://bibliometric.com/) were applied to construct networks based on the analysis of countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords. Results: A total of 2,463 documents were extracted and identified. The United States had the greatest number of publications and total citations, and Thomas Jefferson University was the most productive institution. Michael P. Lisanti was the most influential scholar in this research domain. Cell Cycle was the journal with the most publications on this subject. The most local-cited document was the article titled "Caveolin-1 in oncogenic transformation, cancer, and metastasis." A comprehensive analysis has been conducted based on keywords and cited references. Initially, the research frontiers were predominantly "signal transduction", "human breast cancer," "oncogenically transformed cells," "tumor suppressor gene," and "fibroblasts." While in recent years, the research emphasis has shifted to "tumor microenvironment," "epithelial mesenchymal transition," "nanoparticles," and "stem cells." Conclusion: Taken together, our bibliometric analysis shows that caveolin continues to be of interest in cancer research. The hotspots and research frontiers have evolved from the regulation of cancer signaling, to potential targets of cancer therapy and novel techniques. These results can provide a data-based reference for the guidance of future research.

Global Research Trends in the Links between Periodontal Disease and Cancer: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:Both periodontal disease and cancer are prevalent conditions with significant impacts on individuals and society. Extensive research has suggested a potential link between these two diseases. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis using the Thomson Reuters Web of Science Core Collection database, focusing on publications from 2014 to 2023. The analysis included data extraction and examination of authors, affiliations, publication dates, journals, countries, citation counts, keywords, and the H-index. A total of 253 relevant articles were identified, showing an increasing trend in both publications and citations over the years. The analysis highlighted the most productive authors, institutions, and countries/regions, with Michaud DS and Abnet CC leading in the number of publications. Highly cited articles emphasized the role of specific oral microbiota, particularly F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis, in various cancers, suggesting their potential as diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets. Four key thematic clusters emerged from the keyword analysis: the broader health implications of periodontal disease, the microbiome's role in carcinogenesis, inflammation, and specific bacteria in cancer, and epidemiological methods in studying the disease-cancer association. This bibliometric analysis underscores the growing interest in the connection between periodontal disease and cancer. Future research should adopt interdisciplinary approaches, focus on large-scale microbiome studies and longitudinal research to understand the systemic effects of periodontal disease, identify cancer-associated bacterial profiles, and investigate the molecular mechanisms of bacterial carcinogenesis. Additionally, public health interventions aimed at improving oral hygiene and reducing cancer risk factors are recommended.

Abstract:Background: Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Tumor marker (TM) detection can indicate the existence and growth of a tumor and has therefore been used extensively for diagnosing LC. Here, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to examine TM-related publications for LC diagnosis to illustrate the current state and future trends of this field, as well as to identify additional promising TMs with high sensitivity. Methods: Publications regarding TMs in LC diagnosis were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace was applied to perform a bibliometric analysis of journals, cocitation authors, keywords, and references related to this field. VOSviewer was used to generate concise diagrams about countries, institutions, authors, and keywords. Changes in the TM research frontier were analyzed through citation burst detection. Results: A total of 990 studies were analyzed in this work. The collaboration network analysis revealed that the People's Republic of China, Yonsei University, and Molina R were the most productive country, institution, and scholar, respectively. Additionally, Molina R was the author with the most citations. The National Natural Science Foundation of China was the largest funding source. "Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as tumor marker in lung cancer" was the top reference with the most citations, Lung Cancer was the core journal, and "serum tumor marker" experienced a citation burst over the past 5 years. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis of TMs in LC diagnosis presents the current trends and frontiers in this field. We summarized the research status of this field and the methods to improve the diagnostic efficacy of traditional serum TMs, as well as provided new directions and ideas for improving the LC clinical detection rate. Priority should be given to the transformation of computer-assisted diagnostic technology for clinical applications. In addition, circulating tumor cells, exosomes, and microRNAs were the current most cutting-edge TMs.
