Abstract:Background Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the important treatments for various cancer types and its application to prostate cancer (PCa) has also gradually gained increasing attention. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and objective studies on the overall status of research on RT for PCa. This article aims to summarize and quantify the dynamic trends of RT in PCa by using bibliometrics. Methods Studies on RT for PCa were screened from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database between 1 January 2010 and 21 November 2022 to collate and quantify information characteristics by analyzing parameters including annual publications, countries/regions, institutions and authors with the aid of the bibliometric software CiteSpace and VOSviewer. In addition, research trends and hotspots were explored by analyzing keywords and co-cited references. Results A total of 21338 documents were retrieved. The United States of America (USA) ranked first and maintained the leading position among all countries in the number of publications (8489) and total citations (266342). The University of Toronto was the most active institution in total publications (n=587). Paul L Nguyen enjoyed the most publications (n=179), and Michael J Zelefsky enjoyed the most co-citations (n=3376). INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY BIOLOGY PHYSICS published the most papers (n=1026), and was the most frequently co-cited journal (n=78550). The largest and closest cluster in the reference cluster analysis was “oligorecurrent prostate cancer”. The timeline view of keywords reveals that cluster “biochemical recurrence(BCR)” is ongoing. Moreover, keywords burstness analysis showed that “radiation dosimetry”, “dose rate brachytherapy(BT)”, “salvage radiotherapy”, “stereotactic body radiotherapy(SBRT)”, “guideline”, and “multicenter” were the terms with great bursts in the past a few years. Conclusion The application of RT targeting oligometastatic prostate cancer(OMPC) has garnered considerable attention among researchers. SBRT and BT have become hot topics in the field. Additionally, the BCR of PCa has long been a critical issue requiring extensive research and resolution, and salvage radiotherapy has currently emerged as a closely related research focus. Related large-scale multicenter studies have been conducted over the past few years, providing valuable insights. More high-quality research is expected to be employed to guide clinical decision-making.

Abstract:Purpose: Acupuncture has been used for managing cancer-related symptoms. However, there are still few studies concerning the overall trends in acupuncture therapy on cancer based on bibliometric analysis. This study aims to demonstrate the current status and trends in this field over the past 2 decades. Methods: Articles were retrieved from the Web of Science from 2000 to 2019. CiteSpace was used for co-authorship network of countries/institutions, dual-map analysis, and detecting the keywords with citation bursts. VOSviewer was used to construct networks based on co-authorship and co-citation analysis of authors, and co-occurrence of keywords. Results: A total of 927 articles and reviews were included in the final analysis. The number of publications has steadily increased with some fluctuations among years. The country and institution contributing most to this field are the USA and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Mao JJ was the most productive author and Molassiotis A ranked first in the cited authors. The co-occurrence analysis revealed 5 clusters (including "clinical trials," "clinical studies on chemotherapy/radiation-induced symptoms," "CAM therapy for cancer," "clinical studies on vasomotor symptoms," and "systematic reviews"). Most recent keyword bursts were "neuropathic pain," "arthralgia," "prevention," "supportive care," and "integrative medicine". Conclusions: The annual publication output would increase rapidly in the next decade, which shows a promising future in this research field. Future research hotspots would focus on the role of acupuncture in neuropathic pain, arthralgia, prevention, supportive care, and integrative medicine.

Abstract:Background: Breast cancer is a significant public health issue, exhibiting the most pronounced occurrence and fatality rates among malignant neoplasms globally. Targeted therapy is a medical intervention that focuses on specific molecular markers. This study aims to investigate and evaluate the current research trends and directions in the field of targeted therapy for breast cancer using bibliometric analysis. Method: The Web of Science database was utilized to retrieve relevant articles published between 2003 and 2022. The VOSviewer software and Bibliometrix package in the R language were employed to conduct co-occurrence and clustering analyses of authors, countries, institutions, journals, references, and the CiteSpace tool was utilized for keyword burst detection. Results: A total of 2,258 articles were included and the annual number of publications increased rapidly. The most prolific country on this topic was the USA (n=898, 39.77%) and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center published most papers (n=93). Dennis J. Slamon and Gabriel N. Hortobagyi stood out in the field, with Dennis J. Slamon leading in terms of co-citations(n=653) and Gabriel N. Hortobagyi topping the list in terms of published articles(n=18). The most productive journal was Breast Cancer Research and Treatment and the most cited journal was Journal of Clinical Oncology. The clustering of keywords indicated that the primary focus of researches in the past two decades was on the development and clinical evaluation of tumor-targeted drugs associated with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family signaling pathway, and explored mechanisms related to biological behavior of breast cancer. Keywords co-occurrence and burst analysis identified current research hotspots and potential research trends. Conclusion: This study employed bibliometric analysis to examine research on targeted therapy for breast cancer over a span of 20 years, and identified development trends of research and elucidated potential research trajectories in the domain of this topic. This study helps in the identification of prospective collaborators and partner institutions for researchers.

Abstract:Background: Radiotherapy, as the main treatment method for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), has evolved over time, but there has been no bibliometric study on NPC radiotherapy to date. In our study, the scientific achievements of NPC radiotherapy around the world were evaluated by bibliometric analyses, and the previous research hotspots and future trends are described. Methods: Original articles related to NPC radiotherapy were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. To identify research hotspots and future trends, countries/regions, institutions, journals, references, authors, and keywords were evaluated and visualized by Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results: From 1959 to 2022, 7139 original articles were collected. The annual publications showed an increasing trend, especially after 2011. China had the most publications (n = 3719, 52.09 %). Sun Yat-sen University has the most publications and citations among institutions. Jun Ma is most productive and SR Baker has the highest co-cited centrality. International Journal of Radiation Oncology-Biology-Physics is the core journal, with most publications, citations and co-citations. Analysis of keywords showed intensity-modulated radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy were the main keywords, and multicenter showed the strongest burst. Conclusion: NPC radiotherapy has attracted increasing attention, and precision and artificial intelligence may be the future trends in this field.

Abstract:Abstract Esophageal cancer (EC) is a malignant tumour with high morbidity and mortality rates. Recent studies have shown that much progress has been made in the research of radiotherapy in EC. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of radiotherapy in EC through bibliometrics. Publications related to radiotherapy in EC from 2014 to 2023 were searched on the web of science core collection database. VOSviewers, CiteSpace and R package ‘bibliometrix’ were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. In total, 4258 articles from 76 countries led by China and the USA were included. The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences—Peking Union Medical College has the highest number of publications. International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics is the most popular journal and also the most co-cited journal in this field. These publications come from 21 972 authors among which Liao Zhongxing had published the most papers and Cooper JS was co-cited most often. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and strategies based on it are the main topics in this research field. ‘IMRT’ and ‘immunotherapy’ are the primary keywords of emerging research hotspots. This is a bibliometric study that comprehensively summarizes the research trends and developments of radiotherapy in EC. This information identifies recent research frontiers and hot directions, which will provide a reference for scholars studying radiotherapy in EC.

Abstract:Background: Radiotherapy, a primary treatment for malignant cancer, presents significant clinical challenges globally due to its associated adverse effects, especially with the increased survival rates of cancer patients. Radiation induced heart disease (RIHD) significantly impacts the long-term survival and quality of life of cancer survivors as one of the most devastating consequences. Quite a few studies have been conducted on preclinical and clinical trials of RIHD, showing promising success to some extent. However, no researchers have performed a comprehensive bibliometric study so far. Objective: This study attempts to gain a deeper understanding of the focal points and patterns in RIHD research and to pinpoint prospective new research avenues using bibliometrics. Methods: The study group obtained related 1554 publications between 1990 and 2023 on the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) through a scientific search query. Visualization tools like CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to realize the visual analysis of countries, authors, journals, references and keywords, identifying the hotspots and frontiers in this research field. Results: After collecting all the data, a total of 1554 documents were categorized and analyzed using the above tools. The annual number of publications in the field of RIHD shows a continuous growth trend. In 2013, there was a significant rise in the number of linked publications, with the majority of authors being from the USA, according to the statistics. Among all the journals, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RADIATION ONCOLOGY BIOLOGY PHYSICS published the most relevant papers. Cluster analysis of the references showed that research on RIHD has focused on breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and Hodgkin's lymphoma (also among the three main clusters), preclinical research, childhood cancer, heart dose, coronary artery disease, etc, which are also hot topics in the field. High-frequency keywords in the analysis include risk factors, cancer types, heart disease, survival, trials, proton therapy (PT), etc. Conclusion: Future research on RIHD will mostly focus on thoracic cancer, whose exact cause is yet unknown, with preclinical trials playing an important role. Preventing, consistently monitoring, promptly diagnosing, and timely treating are crucial to decreasing RIHD and extending the life expectancy of cancer survivors.

Global trends in BRCA-related breast cancer research from 2013 to 2022: A scientometric analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Since the mid-2000s, breast cancer incidence among women has slowly increased at about 0.5% per year. In the last three decades, Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene (BRCA) has been proven to be the crucial gene in encouraging the incidence and development of breast cancer. However, scientometric analysis on BRCA-related breast cancer is in shortage. Thus, to have a clear understanding of the current status and catch up with the hotspots, a scientometric analysis was conducted on specific academic publications collected from the Web of Science (WoS). Methods: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) to procure associated articles as our dataset. Bibliometric, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and HistCite software were then applied to conduct visual analyses of countries, institutions, journals, authors, landmark articles, and keywords in this research field. Results: A total of 7,266 articles and 1,310 review articles published between 2013 to 2022 were retrieved eventually. The annual output steadily rose year by year and peaked in 2021. The USA led the way in the number of published works, total citations, and collaboration. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment was the most favoured journal in this research field. Narod SA from the University of Toronto produced the most publications. At last, the most prominent keywords were "breast cancer" (n=1,778), "women" (n=1,369), "brca1" (n=1,276), "ovarian cancer" (n=1,259), "risk" (n=1,181), and "mutations" (n=929), which exposed the hotspots within the BRCA domain of breast cancer study. Conclusion: The tendency in the BRCA research field over the past decade was presented by the scientometric analysis. The current research focus is the clinical trials of poly-adenosine diphosphate ribose polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) drugs and their resistance mechanisms.
A review and bibliometric analysis of global research on proton radiotherapy

Abstract:Proton beam therapy (PBT) has great advantages as tumor radiotherapy and is progressively becoming a more prevalent choice for individuals undergoing radiation therapy. The objective of this review is to pinpoint collaborative efforts among countries and institutions, while also exploring the hot topics and future outlook in the field of PBT. Data from publications were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace and Excel 2016 were used to conduct the bibliometric and knowledge map analysis. A total of 6516 publications were identified, with the total number of articles steadily increasing and the United States being the most productive country. Harvard University took the lead in contributing the highest number of publications. Paganetti Harald published the most articles and had the most cocitations. PHYS MED BIOL published the greatest number of PBT-related articles, while INT J RADIAT ONCOL received the most citations. Paganetti Harald, 2012, PHYS MED BIOL can be classified as classic literature due to its high citation rate. We believe that research on technology development, dose calculation and relative biological effectiveness were the knowledge bases in this field. Future research hotspots may include clinical trials, flash radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Abstract:Background: Radiation therapy has become an important treatment for many malignant tumours after surgery and for palliative tumour care. Although modern radiotherapy technology is constantly improving, radiation damage to normal tissues is often difficult to avoid, and radiation-induced skin injury (RSI) is a common complication, manifested as skin erythema, peeling, ulceration, and even bone and deep organ damage, seriously affect the quality of life for patients. Basic research and clinical trials related to RSI have achieved certain results, while no researchers have conducted comprehensive bibliometric studies. Objective: A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications on RSI published between 2004 and 2023 was conducted to identify current hotspots and future directions in this area of study. Methods: RSI-related publications published between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2023, were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for analysis using VOSviewer and CiteSpace analytics. Results: A total of 1009 publications on RSI from 2004 to 2023 were included in the WoSCC database. The United States had the highest productivity with 299 papers, accounting for 29.63% of the total production, followed by China with 193 papers (19.13%) and Japan with 111 papers (11.00%). In terms of research institutions and journals, the University of Toronto and Journal of Supportive Care in Cancer published the highest number of papers. Professor Edward Chow published the most articles, while Professor Shuyu Zhang was the most cited. The top ten most-cited papers focused on the pathogenesis, prevention, and management of RSI. Keyword co-occurrence analysis and the top 25 keywords with the strongest citation bursts suggest that current research focuses on the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment management of RSI. Conclusion: This study conducted a systematic bibliometric analysis of RSI publications from 2004 to 2023; identified the trends in RSI publications, major research countries, major research institutions, major research journals, major research authors, and major research keywords; and revealed the future development direction and research hotspots of this field. This study provides a valuable reference for future RSI research.

Abstract:Introduction: Brain metastasis is the terminal event of breast cancer with poor prognoses. Therefore, this article aimed to provide an updated summary on the development, hotspots, and research trends of brain metastasis from breast cancer based on bibliometric analysis. Method: Publications on breast cancer with brain metastasis retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and other online bibliometric analysis platforms were used to analyze and visualize the result. Result: In totality, 693 researchers from 3,623 institutions across 74 counties and regions published a total of 2,790 papers in 607 journals. There was a noticeable increase in publications in 2006. The United States was the dominant country with the most publications followed by China. University Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was the most productive institution, while Dana Farber Cancer Institution was the most cited. Journal of Neuro-Oncology published the most papers, while Journal of Clinical Oncology ranked first based on cocited analysis. Nancy U. Lin was the most productive and cited author with high influence. There was a focus on basic research, clinical trials, local therapy, treatment optimization, and epidemiological studies regarding brain metastases from breast cancer. References focused on pathogenesis, prevention, treatment, and prognosis were cited most frequently, among which the clinical trial of novel treatment attracted most attention from researchers. Reference citation burst detection suggested that new therapies such as the novel tyrosine kinase inhibitor and antibody–drug conjugate may lead the research trends in the future. Conclusion: High-income countries contributed more to the field of breast cancer with brain metastasis, while developing countries like China developed quickly. Furthermore, the success of novel therapies in recent years may lead to the new era of treatment of breast cancer with brain metastasis in the future.

Abstract:Background and aims: The tumor microenvironment (TME) has pivotal parts within multiple tumor models of onset/progression, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This bibliometric analysis was developed to explore trends and research niches revolving around TME in TNBC. Methods: Web of Science Core Collection was queried for identifying studies linked with TME in TNBC, after which the VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R software programs were used to conduct bibliometric analyses and to generate corresponding visualizations. Results: In total, this study included 1,604 studies published from 2005-2023. The USA and China exhibited the highest numbers of citations, and the research institutions with the greatest output in this field included Harvard University, the University of Texas System, and Fudan University. Ying Wang from Sun Yat-Sen University was the most published and most cited author in this space. The highest number of articles were published in Cancer , while the greatest co-citation number was evident in Breast Cancer Research . Important keywords related to this research topic included metastasis, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and nanoparticles. In particular, pembrolizumab, immunotherapy, nanoparticles, combination treatment, and biomarkers were topics of marked interest in recent reports. Conclusion: The TME in TNBC is an area of rapidly growing and evolving research interest, with extensive global collaboration helping to drive this field forward. Antitumor therapies targeting the TME in TNBC patients represent an emerging topic of future research, providing opportunities for translational findings. The results of this analysis may provide additional guidance for work focused on the TME in TNBC.

Abstract:Background: There is a crosstalk between gut microbiota and radiotherapy. The aim of this study is to use bibliometric analysis to explore the research status and development trends of research on gut microbiota and radiotherapy. Methods: A literature search regarding publications on gut microbiota and radiotherapy from 2004 to 2023 was retrieved. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct the bibliometric analysis. The growth rate of publications, leading countries and institutions, preferred journals, top authors and co-cited authors, top co-cited references, keywords and citation were analyzed in this study. Results: A total of 2821 papers were extracted. The number of papers has increased rapidly over the past decade, especially after 2017. The USA and China had the most publications and made great contributions to this field. The Chinese Academy of Sciences stood out as the institution with the highest number of publications, followed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College. The most influential authors were Fan Saijun and Li Yuan. PLoS One had the most publications and the most total citations. Highly cited papers and high-frequency keywords illustrated the current status and trends. Furthermore, analysis of keyword with burst revealed that immunotherapy, acid, intestinal barrier, therapy, immunotherapy, fecal microbiota transplantation, etc, are at the forefront of research in this area. Conclusion: This study provides an overview of research on gut microbiota and radiotherapy, highlighting influential contributors, impactful publications, and emerging trends. Our finding suggests avenues for further exploration to improve clinical outcomes.
Visual analysis of image-guided radiation therapy based on bibliometrics: A review

Abstract:Radiation therapy plays an important role in tumor treatment. The development of image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) technology provides a strong guarantee for precise radiation therapy of tumors. However, bibliometric studies on IGRT research have rarely been reported. This study uses literature collected from the Web of Science during 1987 to 2021 as a sample and uses the bibliometric method to reveal the current research status, hotspots, and development trends in IGRT. Based on 6407 papers published from the Web of Science during 1987 to 2021, we utilized Microsoft Excel 2007 and cite space software to perform statistical analysis and visualization of IGRT. A total of 6407 articles were included, this area of IGRT has gone through 4 stages: budding period, growth period, outbreak period, and stationary period. The research category is mainly distributed in Radiology Nuclear Medicine Medical Imaging, which intersects with the research categories of Materials, Physics, and Mathematics. Yin FF, Tanderup K, and Sonke JJ are highly productive scholars who are active in IGRT research, while Jaffray DA, van Herk M and Guckenberger M are authors with high impact in this field. The team of scholars has close cooperation within the team and weak cooperation among teams. The League of European Research Universities, University of Texas System, University of Toronto, and Princess Margaret Cancer are the main research institutions in this field. The United States has the most research literature, followed by China and Germany. Six thousand four hundred seven articles are distributed in 712 journals, and the top 3 journals are Med Phys, Int J Radiat Oncol, and Radiather Oncol. Precise registration, intelligence, magnetic resonance guidance, and deep learning are current research hotspots. These results demonstrate that the research in this field is relatively mature and fruitful in the past 35 years, providing a solid theoretical basis and practical experience for precision radiotherapy.

Abstract:Following the recent method due to Hill, Shafi, and Wetterich, we investigate the impact of higher-dimensional operators (dgreater than or equal to5) induced by gravity and compactification of extra dimensions, on the minimal SU(5) grand unified theory. Modifications caused by the d = 5 operator alone seem to be ruled out, even if the compactification scale M/sub C/ is as low as 10/sup 17/ GeV, as they require sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/less than or equal to0.203 in conflict with the present world average. The addition of a six-dimensional operator is found to allow only high unification masses M/sub U/approx.(0.1--1)M/sub C/, with M/sub C/ = 10/sup 17/--10/sup 19/ GeV and sin /sup 2/theta/sub W/approx. =0.22--0.24. The grand-unification coupling constant is also found to be significantly smaller.

Abstract:Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) represents the most prevalent cancer globally. The past decade has witnessed significant advancements in BCC treatment, primarily through bibliometric studies. Aiming to perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of BCC treatments to comprehend the research landscape and identify trends within this domain, a dataset comprising 100 scientific publications from the Web of Science Core Collection was analyzed. Country co-operation, journal co-citation, theme bursts, keyword co-occurrence, author co-operation, literature co-citation, and field-specific references were examined using VOSviewer and CiteSpace visualization tools. These articles, published between 2013 and 2020, originated predominantly from 30 countries/regions and 159 institutions, with the USA and Germany at the forefront, involving a total of 1118 authors. The keyword analysis revealed significant emphasis on the hedgehog pathway, Mohs micrographic surgery, and photodynamic therapy. The research shows developed nations are at the forefront in advancing BCC therapies, with significant focus on drugs targeting the hedgehog pathway. This treatment avenue has emerged as a crucial area, meriting considerable attention in BCC therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:Technology in Cancer Research &Treatment, Volume 23, Issue , January-December 2024. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to summarize the structure of radiomics-based knowledge and to explore potential trends and priorities by using bibliometric analysis. Methods: Select radiomics-related publications from 2012 to October 2022 from the Science Core Collection Web site. Use VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), CiteSpace (version 6.1.3), Tableau (version 2022), Microsoft Excel and Rstudio's free online platforms (http://bibliometric.com) for co-writing, co-citing, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in the field. The visual analysis is also carried out on it. Results: The study included 6428 articles. Since 2012, there has been an increase in research papers based on radiomics. Judging by publications, China has made the largest contribution in this area. We identify the most productive institutions and authors as Fudan University and Tianjie. The top three magazines with the most publications are《FRONTIERS IN ONCOLOGY》, 《EUROPEAN RADIOLOGY》, and 《CANCERS》. According to the results of reference and keyword analysis, "deep learning, nomogram, ultrasound, f-18-fdg, machine learning, covid-19, radiogenomics" has been determined as the main research direction in the future. Conclusion: Radiomics is in a phase of vigorous development with broad prospects. Cross-border cooperation between countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. It can be predicted that the development of deep learning-based models and multimodal fusion models will be the focus of future research. Advances in knowledge: This study explores the current state of research and hot spots in the field of radiomics from multiple perspectives, comprehensively, and objectively reflecting the evolving trends in imaging-related research and providing a reference for future research.

Characteristics of global radiotherapy trials between 2017 and 2022: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Purpose Radiotherapy continues to play a key role in nearly every cancer, yet little is known about contemporary trials evaluating radiotherapy and its ability to advance cancer care in recent years. The purpose of this study is to describe the evolving landscape of global radiotherapy trials over the past five years. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we downloaded the records of all 153,403 clinical studies registered on ClinicalTrials.gov between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2022 with the primary purpose of "treatment". We then identified radiotherapy trials and did longitudinal descriptive analyses. Results A total of 3,104 (21%) radiotherapy trials registered at ClinicalTrials.gov were identified. The top 3 countries with radiotherapy trial conducted were the United States (1,259, 40.6%), China (610, 19.7%) and France (212, 6.8%). Despite the steady growing trends of all oncology trials, the number of radiotherapy trials presented a decreasing trend. Furthermore, in contrast to other oncology trials, only 991 radiotherapy trials (31.9%) were sponsored by industry, National Institute of Health (NIH) or other federal agencies from 2017 to 2022 (54.9% vs . 31.9%; P < .001), and the overall trend has been declining year by year. Conclusions The decreasing trend in the overall numbers, the unequal distribution and the limited funding from industry, NIH or other federal agencies of radiotherapy trials across the world are concerning considering the important role of radiotherapy for cancer treatment. The decline of radiotherapy trials in the past 5 years warrants more discussion and collaboration among oncologists and funding agencies to promote radiotherapy research in the future.

Abstract:Background Heavy ion radiotherapy (HIRT) has great advantages as tumor radiotherapy. Methods Based on 1,558 literatures from core collections of Web of Science from 1980 to 2020, this study visually analyzes the evolution of HIRT research, and sorts out the hotspots and trends of HIRT research using CiteSpace software. Results Research on HIRT has received more extensive attention over the last 40 years. The development of HIRT is not only closely related to radiation and oncology, but also closely related to the development of human society. In terms of citation frequency, “International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics” was the top journal. In terms of influence, “Radiotherapy and Oncology” was the top journal. “Radiation therapy” and “carbon ion radiotherapy” were the two most frequently used keywords in this field. Conclusion The evolution of the HIRT research has occurred in approximately three stages, including technological exploration, safety and effectiveness research and technological breakthroughs. Finally, some suggestions for future research are put forward.

Abstract:Background and objective: Radiation therapy (RT) is one of the important components of comprehensive treatment for breast cancer and has important value in improving the control rate of local areas, reducing the chance of recurrence and metastasis after breast cancer surgery, delaying disease progression, and improving the survival of breast cancer patients. The factors that affect the RT sensitivity of breast cancer are important. The above potential predictors of radiation efficacy can provide patients with a predictive method and therefore have significant value in clinical therapy. In this paper, we have summarised the predictive factors of radiotherapy sensitivity by reviewing recent research on breast cancer and focused on the following areas: tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), cancer stem cells, noncoding RNAs, signal transduction pathways, genes, etc. This review aims to provide theoretical basis and reference for improving the efficacy of radiotherapy and experimental individualized treatment of breast cancer. Methods: We searched the Web of Science database to identify clinical studies published between 2010 and January 2024 that investigated radiotherapy sensitivity. The main findings of the validated studies were summarised. Key content and findings: Improving the radiosensitivity of breast cancer is essential in the treatment of breast cancer. The radiosensitivity can be improved by modulating immune cells or immunomodulatory factors in the TIME, modulating signal transduction pathways, and other innovative combination therapy strategies. And we also summarized the predictive markers of breast cancer radiosensitivity. Conclusions: In this paper, we reviewed the literature and summarized the newest research advances on the radiosensitivity of breast cancer patients. This review paper includes the following six aspects: the immune microenvironment, tumor stem cells, signaling pathways, regulation of gene/protein expression, small molecule drugs, and predictive markers for radiosensitivity.
