Abstract:The rapid miniaturization in technologies for signal, image processing and optical communication increases the need for diffractive optical elements (DOEs), whose scales move closer to that of the illumination wavelength. The optical behaviour of DOEs is dependent on the polarization of the incident light, and so it is necessary to use a rigorous electromagnetic theory of diffraction to accurately design and analyse its performance. An iterative optimization algorithm for designing two dimensional, finite aperture, aperiodic diffractive optical elements based on a rigorous electromagnetic computation model-the finite-difference time-domain method-has been introduced. The algorithm can present rigorous design results with reasonable computational cost. Two kinds of DOEs designed by our algorithm, one for realizing the beam deflection used for integration optical systems, etc, and the other for realizing 1-to-2 beam split and 1-to-3 beam split, used for optical interconnections, etc, are presented. The simulated results have shown that our method has advantages of good optimization potential, high convergence and is an attractive approach for the rigorous design of DOEs.

Abstract:We present a gradient method for designing cascaded diffractive optical elements (DOEs) consisting of several sequentially located phase DOEs. Using the unitarity property of the operator of light propagation through the cascaded DOE, we obtain explicit expressions for the derivatives of the error functional with respect to the phase functions of the cascaded DOE. We consider the application of the gradient method to the problem of focusing different incident beams to regions with different intensity distributions and to the problem of optical image classification. The presented description of the gradient method treats the problems of designing cascaded DOEs for focusing laser radiation and for image classification within a unified approach reducing the calculation of the derivatives of the error functionals to the same formula. We present examples of the calculation of single and cascaded DOEs for focusing different incident beams to different regions and for classifying handwritten digits, which demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method. The presented results may find application in the design of diffractive neural networks and systems for focusing laser radiation.

Abstract:We consider the design of cascaded diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for generating specified intensity distributions for several incident beams with different wavelengths. For each incident beam with a given wavelength, the cascaded DOE forms a different specified intensity distribution. The problem of DOE design is formulated as the problem of minimizing a functional that depends on the functions of diffractive microrelief height of the cascaded DOE and represents the deviations of the intensity distributions generated at the operating wavelengths from the specified ones. Explicit expressions are obtained for the derivatives of the functional, and on this basis, a gradient method for calculating a cascaded DOE is formulated. The proposed gradient method is used for the calculation of cascaded DOEs focusing radiation of three different wavelengths into different areas. In particular, the calculation of a cascaded DOE generating a complex color image of parrots is considered. The presented numerical simulation results demonstrate high performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:In every real optical system, the light beam or ray bundle is laterally limited by diaphragms or lens boundaries. Therefore, from a rigorous point of view, a diffraction calculation of the point spread function by assuming a truncation at the exit pupil is a simplification. If several boundaries at different $z$z positions inside a system truncate the rays, cascaded diffraction occurs and the field in the exit pupil is modified in amplitude and phase by the edge diffraction effects at all relevant boundaries. A simple model for a fast estimation of these effects and a rule of thumb for real optical systems are worked out in this work.

Abstract:Abstract Structured optical materials create new computing paradigms using photons, with transformative impact on various fields, including machine learning, computer vision, imaging, telecommunications, and sensing. This Perspective sheds light on the potential of free-space optical systems based on engineered surfaces for advancing optical computing. Manipulating light in unprecedented ways, emerging structured surfaces enable all-optical implementation of various mathematical functions and machine learning tasks. Diffractive networks, in particular, bring deep-learning principles into the design and operation of free-space optical systems to create new functionalities. Metasurfaces consisting of deeply subwavelength units are achieving exotic optical responses that provide independent control over different properties of light and can bring major advances in computational throughput and data-transfer bandwidth of free-space optical processors. Unlike integrated photonics-based optoelectronic systems that demand preprocessed inputs, free-space optical processors have direct access to all the optical degrees of freedom that carry information about an input scene/object without needing digital recovery or preprocessing of information. To realize the full potential of free-space optical computing architectures, diffractive surfaces and metasurfaces need to advance symbiotically and co-evolve in their designs, 3D fabrication/integration, cascadability, and computing accuracy to serve the needs of next-generation machine vision, computational imaging, mathematical computing, and telecommunication technologies.

Abstract:An iterative optimization-based synthesis algorithm has been presented for the design of diffractive micro-optical elements (DMOE's) with subwavelength structures as beam controllers. The DMOE's with subwavelength structures only require single step fabrication, but the subwavelength and aperiodic nature of the DMOE's prevent the use of scalar diffraction theory and the use of coupled-wave theory. We apply the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method as the vector model and the iterative plane wave spectrum algorithm (IPWS) as the synthesis algorithm, which can make the design of DMOE's in reasonable time frames. The IPWS, the FDTD method, the plane wave spectrum propagation method have been discussed and a beam deflector with subwavelength structures has been designed.

Abstract:An aperiodic two-dimensional diffractive optical element (DOE) with subwavelength features as an uniform beam shaper which shapes an input laser beam into an uniform intensity distribution in an observation plane has been designed. A rigorous design method combined an iterative optimization algorithm with a rigorous electromagnetic computation --- the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been proposed. The design method and the FDTD method have been discussed in detail. The simulated results have shown that the DOE designed by this rigorous method can produce an uniform field distribution with flat-top, steep edge and low profile error in an observation plane.

Abstract:We present a multiplane algorithm for three-dimensional uniform illumination. The large-diameter diffractive optical element simulated by this algorithm homogeneously concentrates more than 86.5% of the incident energy into a 200 microm length of columnar space around the focal plane. The intensity profile in the whole space is nearly flattop, and the beam's quality measured by the root mean square is less than 20.6%. The algorithm is very useful if a great deal of tolerance is required for the installation error of the optical system or if it is used for some particular application, such as uniform illumination on an incline plane.

Abstract:Abstract Spatially-engineered diffractive surfaces have emerged as a powerful framework to control light-matter interactions for statistical inference and the design of task-specific optical components. Here, we report the design of diffractive surfaces to all-optically perform arbitrary complex-valued linear transformations between an input ( N i ) and output ( N o ), where N i and N o represent the number of pixels at the input and output fields-of-view (FOVs), respectively. First, we consider a single diffractive surface and use a matrix pseudoinverse-based method to determine the complex-valued transmission coefficients of the diffractive features/neurons to all-optically perform a desired/target linear transformation. In addition to this data-free design approach, we also consider a deep learning-based design method to optimize the transmission coefficients of diffractive surfaces by using examples of input/output fields corresponding to the target transformation. We compared the all-optical transformation errors and diffraction efficiencies achieved using data-free designs as well as data-driven (deep learning-based) diffractive designs to all-optically perform (i) arbitrarily-chosen complex-valued transformations including unitary, nonunitary, and noninvertible transforms, (ii) 2D discrete Fourier transformation, (iii) arbitrary 2D permutation operations, and (iv) high-pass filtered coherent imaging. Our analyses reveal that if the total number ( N ) of spatially-engineered diffractive features/neurons is ≥ N i × N o , both design methods succeed in all-optical implementation of the target transformation, achieving negligible error. However, compared to data-free designs, deep learning-based diffractive designs are found to achieve significantly larger diffraction efficiencies for a given N and their all-optical transformations are more accurate for N < N i × N o . These conclusions are generally applicable to various optical processors that employ spatially-engineered diffractive surfaces.

Abstract:We propose a novel design method that incorporates multiple-layer relief profiles of diffractive phase elements to implement integrated operations on the incident beams according to their wavelengths. We demonstrate simultaneous wavelength-division demultiplexing, arbitrary (even random) wavelength shuffling or routing, spatial focusing, and other manipulations of multiwavelength beams, such as irradiance profile shaping, with design examples for applications in three-dimensional optical interconnects.

Abstract:This article developed a novel diffractive optics experimental system based on spatial light modulator(SLM) and charge coupled device(CCD).The SLM is used to replace the lithographic masks.The plotting software such as AutoCAD and Matlab are used to generate apertures,slits,and other complex geometric patterns on the screen of a personal computer,which are then sent to the SLM via an interface circuit.An expanded and collimated laser beam illuminates the SLM and produces diffraction patterns that are observed by the aid of a CCD camera combined with a lens after the SLM,which enables the real-time observation,measurement,and analysis of the Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction properties.This system can perform diffraction experiments on three types of objects including classical geometrical patterns,circular apertures and slits,and the random distribution of various patterns.The system has good real-time property and can save and analyze diffraction patterns conveniently.

Abstract:An iterative optimization algorithm for designing two dimensions, finite aperture, aperiodic diffractive micro-optical elements based on rigorous electromagnetic computation model––the finite-difference time-domain method has been proposed. All aspects relating to the algorithm such as the finite-difference time-domain method, and the optimization process have been discussed in detail. Without any approximation based on scalar theory, the algorithm can present rigorous design results with reasonable computational cost. An aspherical surface lens and four kinds of off-axis lenses for normally incident TE mode have been designed to illustrate our algorithm. Meanwhile, we also consider the influence of quantized-lenses profiles on their diffraction performance.
Unidirectional focusing of light using structured diffractive surfaces

Abstract:Unidirectional optical systems enable selective control of light through asymmetric processing of radiation, effectively transmitting light in one direction while blocking unwanted propagation in the opposite direction. Here, we introduce a reciprocal diffractive unidirectional focusing design based on linear and isotropic diffractive layers that are structured. Using deep learning-based optimization, a cascaded set of diffractive layers are spatially engineered at the wavelength scale to focus light efficiently in the forward direction while blocking it in the opposite direction. The forward energy focusing efficiency and the backward energy suppression capabilities of this unidirectional architecture were demonstrated under various illumination angles and wavelengths, illustrating the versatility of our polarization-insensitive design. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these designs are resilient to adversarial attacks that utilize wavefront engineering from outside. Experimental validation using terahertz radiation confirmed the feasibility of this diffractive unidirectional focusing framework. Diffractive unidirectional designs can operate across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum by scaling the resulting diffractive features proportional to the wavelength of light and will find applications in security, defense, and optical communication, among others.

Abstract:In this article, we derive a theoretical formalism that unifies the rigorous coupled wave analysis and the dynamical diffraction theory. Based on this formalism, we design a computational approach for the diffraction calculation for the nanoscale lamellar gratings with an arbitrary line profile shape. In this approach, the gratings line profile is approximated as a polygon. This proves to be convenient since such an approach does not rely on the geometry model of the grating. We test the new approach against other computational theories and a synchrotron scattering experiment.

The DOEs with subwavelength structures, have the ability for monolithic integration and can require only single step fabrication, but the subwavelength and aperiodic nature of the DOEs prevent the use of scalar diffraction theory and the use of coupled-wave theory. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method as the electromagnetic computational model and the iterative plane wave spectrum algorithm (IPWSA) as the optimization algorithm, which can make the design of DOEs in reasonable time frames,have been applied for designing DOEs. The IPWSA, the FDTD method, the plane wave spectrum propagation method and the Farn method are discussed. By using the iterative algorithm, a beam deflector with subwavelengh structures was designed for normal incidence TE mode illumination, which has shown that the optimization algorithm is valid and competent for rigorously designing diffractive optical elements.

Abstract:Waveguide design is crucial in developing efficient light delivery systems, requiring meticulous material selection, precise manufacturing, and rigorous performance optimization, including dispersion engineering. Here, we introduce universal diffractive waveguide designs that can match the performance of any conventional dielectric waveguide and achieve various functionalities. Optimized using deep learning, our diffractive waveguide designs can be cascaded to each other to form any desired length and are comprised of transmissive diffractive surfaces that permit the propagation of desired guided modes with low loss and high mode purity. In addition to guiding the targeted modes along the propagation direction through cascaded diffractive units, we also developed various waveguide components and introduced bent diffractive waveguides, rotating the direction of mode propagation, as well as programmable mode filtering and mode splitting diffractive waveguide designs, showcasing the versatility of this platform. This diffractive waveguide framework was experimentally validated in the terahertz (THz) spectrum using 3D-printed diffractive layers to selectively pass certain spatial modes while rejecting others. Diffractive waveguides can be scaled to operate at different wavelengths, including visible and infrared parts of the spectrum, without the need for material dispersion engineering, providing an alternative to traditional waveguide components. This advancement will have potential applications in telecommunications, imaging, sensing and spectroscopy, among others.

Abstract:Multi-order diffraction lenses can focus different wavelengths at the same focal point by utilizing various diffraction orders. However, due to material dispersion, the focal position shifts when the incident wavelength moves away from the primary wavelength, resulting in limited spectral bandwidth. This paper presents a computationally optimized multi-order diffractive lens design and a related image reconstruction algorithm, enabling broadband high-resolution imaging with a single element. We introduce a new type of lens, the Spectral Multi-Order Diffractive Lens (SMODLs), which redistributes the energy across different diffractive orders to achieve relatively high focusing performance within specified wavelength bands. Subsequently. The relatively sharp spectral images generated by SMODL within these specified bands serve as priors for reconstructing images across the full spectrum. A prototype lens with a 40 mm aperture and a 320 mm focal length was designed and fabricated. The prior images' wavebands were designated as 525 nm to 575 nm and 675 nm to 725 nm, with peak Strehl ratios of 0.47 and 0.35, respectively. Finally, grayscale images within the 500∼800 nm wavelength range were reconstructed. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our approach, achieving high-resolution imaging across a 300 nm bandwidth with a single diffractive element.

Abstract:We propose a rigorous electromagnetic design of two-dimensional and finite-aperture diffractive optical elements (DOEs) that employs an effective iterative optimization algorithm in conjunction with a rigorous electromagnetic computational model: the finite-difference time-domain method. The iterative optimization process, the finite-difference time-domain method, and the angular spectrum propagation method are discussed in detail. Without any approximation based on the scalar theory, the algorithm can produce rigorous design results, both numerical and graphical, with fast convergence, reasonable computational cost, and good design quality. Using our iterative algorithm, we designed a diffractive cylindrical lens and a 1-to-2-beam fanner for normal-incidence TE-mode illumination, thus showing that the optimization algorithm is valid and competent for rigorously designing diffractive optical elements. Concerning the problem of fabrication, we also evaluated the performance of the DOE when the DOE profile is discrete. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.
