Abstract:Designed experiments are carried out to systematically study the effects of silver ions on morphology and yield of gold nanorods synthesized via a seed-mediated method. Gold nanorods synthesized with different silver ions and CTAB concentrations were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM. The shape and yield of gold nanorods were effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration ratio of CTAB and silver ions for synthesis. Dark field images of a glass slide sample with gold nanorods deposit and a sample with gold nanrods staining cells further confirmed that high quality gold nanorods were obtained.

Abstract:Synthesis of anisotropic nanostructures from materials with isotropic crystal structures often requires the use of seeds containing twin planes to break the crystalline symmetry and promote the preferential anisotropic growth. Controlling twinning in seeds is therefore critically important for high-yield synthesis of many anisotropic nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate a unique strategy to induce twinning in metal nanostructures for anisotropic growth by taking advantage of the large lattice mismatch between two metals. By using Au-Cu as an example, we show, both theoretically and experimentally, that deposition of Cu to the surface of single-crystalline Au seeds can build up strain energy, which effectively induces the formation of twin planes. Subsequent seeded growth allows the production of Cu nanorods with high shape anisotropy that is unachievable without the use of Au seeds. This work provides an effective strategy for the preparation of anisotropic metal nanostructures.
DNA‐Encoded Tuning of Geometric and Plasmonic Properties of Nanoparticles Growing from Gold Nanorod Seeds

Abstract:Systematically controlling the morphology of nanoparticles, especially those growing from gold nanorod (AuNR) seeds, are underexplored; however, the AuNR and its related morphologies have shown promises in many applications. Herein we report the use of programmable DNA sequences to control AuNR overgrowth, resulting in gold nanoparticles varying from nanodumbbell to nanooctahedron, as well as shapes in between, with high yield and reproducibility. Kinetic studies revealed two representative pathways for the shape control evolving into distinct nanostructures. Furthermore, the geometric and plasmonic properties of the gold nanoparticles could be precisely controlled by adjusting the base compositions of DNA sequences or by introducing phosphorothioate modifications in the DNA. As a result, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks of the nanoparticles can be fine-tuned in a wide range, from visible to second near-infrared (NIR-II) region beyond 1000nm.

Abstract:Single-crystal gold nanospheres with controlled diameters in the range 5-30 nm were synthesized by using a facile approach that was based on successive seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis was the use of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a capping agent and a large excess of ascorbic acid as a reductant to ensure fast reduction and, thus, single crystallinity and a spherical shape of the resultant nanoparticles. The diameters of the gold nanospheres could be readily controlled by varying the amount of seeds that were introduced into the reaction system. The gold nanospheres could be produced with uniform diameters of up to 30 nm; thus, their localized surface plasmon resonance properties could be directly compared with the results that were obtained from theoretical calculations. Interestingly, we also found that these gold nanospheres self-assembled into dimers, larger aggregates, and wavy nanowires when they were collected by centrifugation, dispersed in deionized water, and then diluted to different volumes with deionized water.

Abstract:Sequential seeding of nanocrystals can be used to control and develop complex shapes during growth. Smith <em>et al.</em> explored the effects of limiting adatom addition versus diffusion for gold or palladium grown on gold seeds. Fast growth conditions promote branched nanocrystals along the <111> directions. The addition of hydrochloric acid lowered the pH and increased the halide concentration, slowing the rate of metal precursor reduction. Fast growth promoted concave shapes, whereas slower growth favored convex ones. By using the production of one growth cycle as the seed for the next one, 85 distinct hierarchical shapes were grown.

Abstract:Tadpole-shaped gold nanoparticles are synthesized in high yield by a simple temperature-reducing seeding approach, without additional capping agent or surfactant. The initial concentration of gold ions, the added seed colloids, and the solution reaction temperature play critical roles. Examination of nanoparticles at different stages of the reaction with transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectrophotometry reveal the formation of the special structure as a kind of aggregation-based growth, including spherical aggregation at the boiling temperature and linear aggregation at the reduced temperature. The latter is further studied using a theoretical model. Moreover, thanks to the asymmetric structure of gold nanotadpoles, three types of chaining of gold nanotadpoles are experimentally obtained in nonuniform alternating-current electric fields at different frequencies by dielectrophoresis, which are in qualitative agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:Unprecedented advances in metal nanoparticle synthesis have paved the way for broad applications in sensing, imaging, catalysis, diagnosis, and therapy by tuning the optical properties, enhancing catalytic performance, and improving chemical and biological properties of metal nanoparticles. The central guiding concept for regulating the size and morphology of metal nanoparticles is identified as the precise manipulation of nucleation and subsequent growth, often known as seed-mediated growth methods. However, since the growth process is sensitive not only to the metal seeds but also to capping agents, metal precursors, growth solution, growth/incubation time, reductants, and other influencing factors, the precise control of metal nanoparticle morphology is multifactorial. Further, multiple reaction parameters are entangled with each other, so it is necessary to clarify the mechanism by which each factor precisely regulates the morphology of metal nanoparticles. In this review, to exploit the generality and extendibility of metal nanoparticle synthesis, the mechanisms of growth influencing factors in seed-mediated growth methods are systematically summarized. Second, a variety of critical properties and applications enabled by grown metal nanoparticles are focused upon. Finally, the current progress and offer insights on the challenges, opportunities, and future directions for the growth and applications of grown metal nanoparticles are reviewed.

Abstract:Precise control over the structure of metal nanomaterials is important for developing advanced nanobiotechnology. Assembly methods of nanoparticles into structured blocks have been widely demonstrated recently. However, synthesis of nanocrystals with controlled, three-dimensional structures remains challenging. Here we show a directed crystallization of gold by a single DNA molecular regulator in a sequence-independent manner and its applications in three-dimensional topological controls of crystalline nanostructures. We anchor DNA onto gold nanoseed with various alignments to form gold nanocrystals with defined topologies. Some topologies are asymmetric including pushpin-, star- and biconcave disk-like structures, as well as more complex jellyfish- and flower-like structures. The approach of employing DNA enables the solution-based synthesis of nanocrystals with controlled, three-dimensional structures in a desired direction, and expands the current tools available for designing and synthesizing feature-rich nanomaterials for future translational biotechnology.

Abstract:Arrays of noble metal nanoparticles show potential applications in (bio-) sensing, optical storage, surface-enhanced spectroscopy, and waveguides. For all such potential devices, controlling the size, morphology, and interparticle spacing of the nanoparticles is very important. Here, we combine seed-mediated growth with nanosphere lithography to study the controllable growth of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), in which the self-assembly monolayer of polystyrene (PS) on a silicon surface is used to guide the modi. cation of alkanesilanes and the subsequent adsorption of gold seeds; seed-mediated growth is applied to controlling the morphology and size of Au NPs. The size of adsorption region (determining the number of adsorbed gold seeds) is controlled by etching PS microspheres with oxygen plasma or annealing PS microspheres at the glass transition temperature. The size and morphology of the Au NPs are controlled by changing growth conditions. In such a way, we have achieved the dual control of the obtained Au NPs. Preliminary results show that this strategy holds a great promise. This approach can also be extended to a wide range of materials and substrates.

Abstract:Doping of semiconductors by impurity atoms enabled their widespread technological application in micro and opto-electronics. For colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, an emerging family of materials where size, composition and shape-control offer widely tunable optical and electronic properties, doping has proven elusive. This arises both from the synthetic challenge of how to introduce single impurities and from a lack of fundamental understanding of this heavily doped limit under strong quantum confinement. We develop a method to dope semiconductor nanocrystals with metal impurities providing control of the band gap and Fermi energy. A combination of optical measurements, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theory revealed the emergence of a confined impurity band and band-tailing. Successful control of doping and its understanding provide n- and p-doped semiconductor nanocrystals which greatly enhance the potential application of such materials in solar cells, thin-film transistors, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A shining example of dopingMany technological materials are intentionally 'doped' by the introduction of trace amounts of foreign elements to impart new and useful properties — a classic example is the doping of semiconductors. Feng Wang et al. describe a system in which lanthanide doping can be used to control the growth of NaYF4 nanocrystals, making it possible to simultaneously tune the size, crystallographic phase and optical properties of the resulting materials. These findings increase our understanding of doping-induced structural transformations, and provide a straightforward route for the controlled synthesis of luminescent nanocrystals for many applications.

Abstract:Atomically precise doping of metal nanoclusters provides excellent opportunities not only for subtly tailoring their properties but also for in-depth understanding of composition (structure)-property correlation of metal nanoclusters and has attracted increasing interest partly due to its significance for fundamental research and practical applications. Although single and multiple metal atom doping of metal nanoclusters (NCs) has been achieved, sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping is still a big challenge and has not yet been reported. Herein, by introducing a second ligand, a novel multistep synthesis method was developed, controlled sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping was successfully achieved for the first time, and three doped NCs Au25Cd1(p-MBT)17(PPh3)2, Au18Cd2(p-MBT)14(PPh3)2, and [Au19Cd3(p-MBT)18]- (p-MBTH: para-methylbenzenethiol) were obtained, including two novel NCs that were precisely characterized via mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and so forth. Furthermore, sequential doping-induced evolutions in the atomic and crystallographic structures and optical and catalytic properties of NCs were revealed.

Abstract:Controlling the growth orientation of semiconductor nanowire arrays is of vital importance for their applications in the fields of nanodevices. In the present work, hexagonal CdSe nanowire arrays with various preferential growth orientations have been successfully yielded by employing the electrodeposition technique using porous alumina as templates (PATs). We demonstrate by experimental and theoretical efforts that the growth orientation of the CdSe nanowires can be effectively manipulated by varying either the nanopore diameter of the PATs or the deposited current density, which has significant effects on the optical properties of the CdSe nanowires. The present study provides an alternative approach to tuning the growth direction of electrodeposited nanowires and thus is of importance for the fabrication of nanodevices with controlled functional properties.

Abstract:Passivation of the metal surface by dendrons bearing a focal 4-pyridone functionality (the second-generation dendron is shown; C: gray, N: blue, O: red) allows controlled nucleation and growth of gold nanoclusters. The particle size is a direct function of the generation number of the dendritic ligands, with higher generation dendron producing larger particles.

Abstract:A facile method for the synthesis of gold-based hybrid nanocrystals is presented by Jianguo Hou and co-workers on p. 1936. Pre-synthesized nanocrystal seeds of CdSe, PbSe, FePt, Cu2O, or FePt–CdS are used for controlled heterogeneous nucleation and growth of gold. The frontispiece shows model structures of such hybrid nanocrystals.

Abstract:Seed-mediated synthesis strategies, in which small gold nanoparticle precursors are added to a growth solution to initiate heterogeneous nucleation, are among the most prevalent, simple, and productive methodologies for generating well-defined colloidal anisotropic nanostructures. However, the size, structure, and chemical properties of the seeds remain poorly understood, which partially explains the lack of mechanistic understanding of many particle growth reactions. Here, we identify the majority component in the seed solution as an atomically precise gold nanocluster, consisting of a 32-atom Au core with 8 halide ligands and 12 neutral ligands constituting a bound ion pair between a halide and the cationic surfactant: Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 (X = Cl, Br; AQA = alkyl quaternary ammonium). Ligand exchange is dynamic and versatile, occurring on the order of minutes and allowing for the formation of 48 distinct Au 32 clusters with AQAX (alkyl quaternary ammonium halide) ligands. Anisotropic nanoparticle syntheses seeded with solutions enriched in Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 show narrower size distributions and fewer impurity particle shapes, indicating the importance of this cluster as a precursor to the growth of well-defined nanostructures.

Abstract:This article reports a systematic study of the seed-mediated growth of Au@Pd coreshell nanocrystals with a variety of controlled sizes and morphologies. The key to the success of this synthesis is to manipulate the reaction kinetics by tuning a set of reaction parameters, including the type and concentration of capping agent, the amount of ascorbic acid used as the reducing agent, and the injection rate used for the precursor solution. Starting from Au nanospheres of 11 nm in diameter as the seeds, Au@Pd coreshell nanocrystals with a number of morphologies, including octahedra, concave octahedra, rectangular bars, cubes, concave cubes, and dendrites, could all be obtained by simply altering the reaction rate. For the first time, it was possible to generate Au@Pd nanocrystals with concave structures on the surfaces while their sizes were kept below 20 nm. In addition, the as-prepared Au@Pd nanocubes can be used as seeds to generate Au@Pd@Au and Au@Pd@Au@Pd nanocrystals with multishelled structures.

Abstract:A new strategy for precisely controlling the growth of heterostructured nanocrystals through a dissolution-attachment process of core-shell nanocrystals is proposed. The secondary growth process of Cu-Au bimetallic nanocrystals (BNCs) comprising of a core-shell structure has been systematically investigated, which generates a variety of heterostructured Cu-Au-based nanocrystals. Various factors such as the addition of dodecanethiol and the size of the Cu-Au nanoseeds that contribute to the diverse growth of core-shell Cu-Au BNCs have been examined. A dissolution-attachment growth process is suggested on the basis of UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy measurements. In addition to the size, the shape and composition of the final nanocrystals could be controlled by this process. This new strategy will allow us to control the growth process of heterostructured nanocrystals independently from the nucleation stage, which might become much more complex than that of the single-component nanocrystals.
