Abstract:Achieving atomic precision in nanostructured materials is essential for comprehending formation mechanisms and elucidating structure-property relationships. Within the realm of nanoscience and technology, atomically precise ligand-protected noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a rapidly expanding area of interest. These clusters manifest quantum confinement-induced optoelectronic, photophysical, and chemical properties, along with remarkable catalytic capabilities. Among coinage metals, silver distinguishes itself for the fabrication of stable nanoclusters, primarily due to its cost-effectiveness compared to gold. This minireview provides an overview of recent advancements since 2020 in synthetic methodologies and ligand selections toward attaining NCs boasting a minimum of two free valence electrons. Additionally, it explores strategies for fine-tuning optical properties. The discussion extends to surface reactivity, elucidating how exposure to ligands, heat, and light induces transformations in size and structure. Of paramount significance are the applications of silver NCs in catalytic reactions for energy and chemical conversion, supplemented by in-depth mechanistic insights. Furthermore, the review delineates challenges and outlines future directions in the NC field, with an eye toward the design of new functional materials and prospective applications in diverse technologies, including optoelectronics, energy conversion, and fine chemical synthesis.

A Review on Diverse Silver Nanostructures

Abstract:This article reviews recent advances in the utilization of various water based synthesis routes towards the shape-controlled synthesis of silver nanoparticles and microstructures in a diverse range of shapes and sizes from several nanometers to micrometers.A variety of very simple one-pot methods,at times employing commercial microwave ovens,inexpensive low power ultrasound cleaners,or two-electrode electro-chemistry,can be surprisingly effective in the controlled synthesis of a wide range of nanostructured products,if only parameters are carefully chosen.Many approaches which are adopted include synthesis of Ag nanostructures with various shapes in solution,doping of Ag nanoparticles on unmodified silica and on/inside carbon spheres,kinetically controlled growth of Ag micro-particles with novel nanostructures on flat substrates,and galvanic replacement towards bimetallic Ag-Au dendrites and carbon composites.Characterizations of shape,composition and microstructure are carried out via scanning and transmission electron microscopy,various spectroscopy methods,N2 absorption measurements and suchlike.The involved growth mechanisms are investigated in order to discover new means towards better control.Size,location and shape control,including micro-and nanostructure features,allows tuning the products properties towards desired applications.We focus on the optical properties and catalytic activities,but also the stability of compounds can be an issue of interest.

Abstract:Atomically precise doping of metal nanoclusters provides excellent opportunities not only for subtly tailoring their properties but also for in-depth understanding of composition (structure)-property correlation of metal nanoclusters and has attracted increasing interest partly due to its significance for fundamental research and practical applications. Although single and multiple metal atom doping of metal nanoclusters (NCs) has been achieved, sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping is still a big challenge and has not yet been reported. Herein, by introducing a second ligand, a novel multistep synthesis method was developed, controlled sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping was successfully achieved for the first time, and three doped NCs Au25Cd1(p-MBT)17(PPh3)2, Au18Cd2(p-MBT)14(PPh3)2, and [Au19Cd3(p-MBT)18]- (p-MBTH: para-methylbenzenethiol) were obtained, including two novel NCs that were precisely characterized via mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and so forth. Furthermore, sequential doping-induced evolutions in the atomic and crystallographic structures and optical and catalytic properties of NCs were revealed.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) with size comparable to their electron mean free path possess unusual properties and functionalities1, serving as model systems to explore quantum and classical coupling interactions as well as building blocks of practical applications2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Although advances in strategies for synthesizing metal NPs have enabled control of size, composition and shape9,10,11,12,13, the requirement that defects are simultaneously controlled, to ensure essential perfect nanocrystallinity for physics modelling as well as device optimization, is a potentially more significant issue, but has posed substantial technological challenges. Here we report that crystallinity of monodisperse silver NPs can be well controlled by judicious choice of functional groups of molecular precursors, thus facilitating investigation of their scope for versatile applications. We demonstrate how nanoscale chemical transformation, electron–phonon interactions and nanomechanical properties are modified by nanocrystallinity. Lastly, we find that performance of NP-based molecular sensing devices can be optimized with significant improvement of figure of merit if perfect single-crystalline NPs are applied. Our approach represents a versatile synthetic route for other metal nanomaterials with unprecedented control of their structure, creating a rational pathway for understanding and manipulating nanoscale chemical and physical processes as well as technological applications of metal NPs.

Abstract:Metallicity/chirality‐pure single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising materials for realizing post‐silicon electronics. Molecular doping is emerging as the primary doping approach for the structure‐controlled SWCNTs, enabling their eventual use in various devices. This review introduces the underlying physical process of molecular doping of SWCNTs, dopant materials, and doping effects in devices, and also discusses challenges and opportunities in this field. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that have a reproducible distribution of chiralities or single chirality are among the most competitive materials for realizing post‐silicon electronics. Molecular doping, with its non‐destructive and fine‐tunable characteristics, is emerging as the primary doping approach for the structure‐controlled SWCNTs, enabling their eventual use in various functional devices. This review provides an overview of important advances in the area of molecular doping of structure‐controlled SWCNTs and their applications. The first part introduces the underlying physical process of molecular doping, followed by a comprehensive survey of the commonly used dopants for SWCNTs to date. Then, it highlights how the convergence of molecular doping and structure‐sorting strategies leads to significantly improved functionality of SWCNT‐based field‐effect transistor arrays, transparent electrodes in optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and many emerging devices. At last, several challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed, with the hope of shedding light on promoting the practical application of SWCNTs in future electronics.

Abstract:Bimetallic noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) are an emerging topic of metal clusters due to their distinguishing characteristics compared to monometallic clusters. Doping of different noble atoms in other clusters is an effective strategy for tailoring their functionalities for specific applications and synergistic effects. Obtaining single-heteroatom doping is desirable but still very challenging to date. Herein, 2,4-dimethylbenzenthiol (2,4-DMBT) protected Ag/Au alloy NCs (ca. 2-3 nm) were synthesized via a wet chemical one-pot process. The effect of the number of Au atoms in Ag NCs on their optical properties and bandgap was investigated. We found that the change of the absorption peak positions of the Ag NCs was influenced by the presence of Au atoms. Besides, we found that the HOMO-LUMO peak has appeared without a significant change in cluster size during synthesis. Ag/Au alloy NCs are characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron transmission microscopy (STEM).

Abstract:Compared with conventional solders, nano-silver benefits low-temperature sintering and high-temperature service, perfectly matching the high-temperature operating environment for third-generation semiconductor devices. However, the synthetic cost, complexity of the sintering process and the low connection strength limit its development. This paper describes the physical, chemical reduction and biological methods of synthesizing and compares the advantages and disadvantages of these three methods. The process parameters affecting the sintering process of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are presented in a comprehensive and in-depth manner. Present methods are also introduced to improve the quality of nano-silver joints, such as the adding enhancement, the silver nanostructured films, and a trimodal-Ag paste consisting of silver particles in three sizes: nano, submicron and micron, aiming to break the limitation of the poor quality of nano-silver joints. In addition, this paper provides the first comprehensive summary of the sintering process and sintering mechanism of nano-silver, and introduces the latest results of the study of the sintering mechanism of nano-silver by using the Molecular Dynamics Simulation (MDS) technique. At the end, the advanced applications of nano-silver are shown, thus pointing out the direction for the further development and applications of nano-silver.

Abstract:This feature article reviews some strategies and realizations for manipulating and tailoring the physical and chemical properties of zero dimensional (0-D) and one dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials as well as reveals the underlying mechanism. A series of high-resolution characterization techniques, such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM), conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM), and spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL), have been used in this study, which enable us to investigate the morphologies, structures and properties of individual nanomaterials experimentally. Some theoretical quantum chemistry methods such as tightbinding (TB) and density functional theory (DFT) are also applied for better understanding the experimental phenomena. Our results demonstrate that deliberate control at atomic and molecular scale, such as fabricating ordered and disordered metal nanoparticles, growing designed heterostructures, doping or grafting single molecules, and changing geometry (e. g., aspect ratio, tip sharpness, size, and surface ratio), can dramatically tailor the properties of the 0-D and 1-D nanomaterials. The results shown here can be extended to various nanomaterials and nanodevices, and therefore are useful for versatile applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Tailorable Electronic and Electric Properties of Graphene with Selective Decoration of Silver Nanoparticles by Laser-Assisted Photoreduction

Abstract:While graphene shows great potential for diverse device applications, to broaden the scope of graphene-based device applications further, it would be necessary to tune the electronic state of graphene and its resultant electrical properties properly. Surface decoration with metal nanoparticles is one of the efficient doping methods to control the properties of two-dimensional materials. Here, we report the p-type doping effects in single-layer graphene decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) that were formed area-selectively by the facile one-step photoreduction (PR) process based on focused-laser irradiation. During the PR process, AgNPs were reduced on graphene in AgNO3 solution by laser-driven photoexcitation followed by chemical reactions. Based on scanning electron microscopy analyses, the morphology characteristics of AgNPs were shown to be modulated by the laser dwell time and power controllably. Further, p-type doping effects were demonstrated using graphene-field-effect transistor structures whose graphene channels were selectively decorated with AgNPs by the PR process, as validated by the decrease in channel resistance and the shift of the Dirac point voltage. Moreover, the growth of AgNPs was observed to be more active on the graphene channel that was laser-annealed ahead of the PR process, leading to enhancing the efficiency of this approach for altering device characteristics.

Abstract:Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively employed as appealing platforms for biomedical applications over the past few decades. Their bimetallic nanocrystals (Au/Ag NCs) are currently attracting tremendous attention as they exhibit not only a combination of properties associated with Au and Ag, but also novel properties and capabilities due to their synergistic effect. In this review, we first highlight the recent developments in the controllable synthesis of Au/Ag bimetallic NCs, including their core-shell structure, alloy structure, heterostructure and complex structure. Their recent advances in biomedical applications, including localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-related assays, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based assays, photothermal-derived therapy and release, and catalysis applications, are then outlined and discussed respectively. Finally, we conclude with challenges and perspectives of controllable synthesis of Au/Ag NCs and their further applications in biomedical field.

Abstract:Doped nanoparticles (especially bimetal doped nanoparticles) have attracted extensive interest not only for fundamental" scientific research but also for application purposes. However, their indefinite composition (structure) and broad distribution hinder an insightful understanding of the interaction between these invasive metals in bimetal doped nanoparticles. Fortunately, atom-precise bimetal doped ultra small nanoparticles (nanoclusters) provide opportunities to obtain such insights. However, atom-precise trimetal nano clusters and their structures have rarely been reported. Here, we successfully dope thiolated Au-25 nanoclusters with Hg and Ag successively by using a biantigalvanic reduction method. We then fully characterize the as-obtained trimetal nanoclusters using multiple techniques (including single-crystal X-ray crystallography), and we demonstrate that the mercury and silver dopings exhibit not only a synergistic but also a counteractive influence on some of the physicochemical properties of Au-25.
Patterning of Metal Nanowire Networks: Methods and Applications

Abstract:With the advance in flexible and stretchable electronics, one-dimensional nanomaterials such as metal nanowires have drawn much attention in the past 10 years or so. Metal nanowires, especially silver nanowires, have been recognized as promising candidate materials for flexible and stretchable electronics. Owing to their high electrical conductivity and high aspect ratio, metal nanowires can form electrical percolation networks, maintaining high electrical conductivity under deformation (e.g., bending and stretching). Apart from coating metal nanowires for making large-area transparent conductive films, many applications require patterned metal nanowires as electrodes and interconnects. Precise patterning of metal nanowire networks is crucial to achieve high device performances. Therefore, a high-resolution, designable, and scalable patterning of metal nanowire networks is important but remains a critical challenge for fabricating high-performance electronic devices. This review summarizes recent advances in patterning of metal nanowire networks, using subtractive methods, additive methods of nanowire dispersions, and printing methods. Representative device applications of the patterned metal nanowire networks are presented. Finally, challenges and important directions in the area of the patterning of metal nanowire networks for device applications are discussed.

Abstract:Lattice engineering of nanomaterials holds promise in simultaneously regulating their geometric and electronic effects to promote their performance. However, local microenvironment engineering of Fe0 nanoparticles (nFe0) for efficient and selective environmental remediation is still in its infancy and lacks deep understanding. Here, we present the design principles and characterization techniques of lattice-doped nFe0 from the point of view of microenvironment chemistry at both atomic and elemental levels, revealing their crystalline structure, electronic effects, and physicochemical properties. We summarize the current knowledge about the impacts of doping nonmetal p-block elements, transition-metal d-block elements, and hybrid elements into nFe0 crystals on their local coordination environment, which largely determines their structure-property-activity relationships. The materials' reactivity-selectivity trade-off can be altered via facile and feasible approaches, e.g., controlling doping elements' amounts, types, and speciation. We also discuss the remaining challenges and future outlooks of using lattice-doped nFe0 materials in real applications. This perspective provides an intuitive interpretation for the rational design of lattice-doped nFe0, which is conducive to real practice for efficient and selective environmental remediation.
Tailoring the photoluminescence of atomically precise nanoclusters

Abstract:Due to their atomically precise structures and intriguing chemical/physical properties, metal nanoclusters are an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. Photo-luminescence (PL) is one of their most fascinating properties, due to the plethora of promising PL-based applications, such as chemical sensing, bio-imaging, cell labeling, phototherapy, drug delivery, and so on. However, the PL of most current nanoclusters is still unsatisfactory—the PL quantum yield (QY) is relatively low (generally lower than 20%), the emission lifetimes are generally in the nanosecond range, and the emitted color is always red (emission wavelengths of above 630 nm). To address these shortcomings, several strategies have been adopted, and are reviewed herein: capped-ligand engineering, metallic kernel alloying, aggregation-induced emission, self-assembly of nanocluster building blocks into cluster-based networks, and adjustments on external environment factors. We further review promising applications of these fluorescent nanoclusters, with particular focus on their potential to impact the fields of chemical sensing, bio-imaging, and bio-labeling. Finally, scope for improvements and future perspectives of these novel nanomaterials are highlighted as well. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in the fluorescence of metal nanoclusters, and our review hopefully opens up new horizons for these scientists to manipulate PL properties of nanoclusters. This review is based on publications available up to December 2018.

Abstract:The shape‐controlled synthesis of nanocrystals remains a hot research topic in nanotechnology. Particularly, the fabrication of one‐dimensional (1D) structures such as wires, rods, belts, and tubes has been an interesting and important subject within nanoscience in the last few decades. 1D necklace‐like micro/nano‐structures are a sophisticated geometry that has attracted increasing attention due to their anisotropic and periodic structure, intrinsic high surface area, abundant transport channels, exposure of each component to the surface, and multiscale roughness of the surface. These characteristics enable their unique electrical, optical, and catalytic properties. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the advanced research progress on the fabrication strategies, novel properties, and various applications of necklace‐like structures. It begins with the main fabrication methods of necklace‐like structures and subsequently details a variety of their properties and applications. Abstract:The efficiency of charge transport across a molecular bridge, such as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), in molecular electronics is influenced not only by the molecules' structural configuration but also significantly by the choice of electrode materials. Single-layered graphene (SLG), a novel electrode material, offers unique benefits for forming such junctions, including exceptional flexibility, high transparency, and elevated carrier mobility. Notably, the work function of SLG can be modulated through p-type or n-type doping. In this study, we used our previously reported micro-well devices to fabricate Au/SAM/SLG junctions. Two types of SAMs were employed: one forming a HOMO-dominated junction, while the other formed a LUMO-dominated junction. These SAMs were coupled with three variants of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) SLG: as-transferred, n-type doped, and p-type doped, yielding six distinct combinations. Our results show that doping effectively adjusts the relative energetic position of the Fermi level between the graphene electrode and the molecular frontier orbitals, thereby controlling the quantum transport efficiency through the molecular bridge. These findings open new possibilities for designing high-performance molecular electronic devices such as biosensors, field-effect transistors, and thermoelectric harvesters.

Abstract:Controlling the structure of noble-metal-based nanomaterials (NMNs) with precision at an atomic level has received considerable attention in recent years. However, the complexity of synthetic process poses great challenges in the delicate design and fine control of NMNs. In this review, we focus on recent progress made in the chemical synthesis of NMNs at an atomic level, which include surface engineering of NMNs, atomic layer coating of NMNs, metal doping or substitution, and intermetallic compounds. The catalytic properties of well-controlled NMNs are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities pertaining to the controllable synthesis of NMNs are presented. We believe this brief review provides up-to-date information on the fine tuning of NMNs structures, and offers some new perspectives of this rapidly developing field. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In the dynamic landscape of nanotechnology, atomically precise silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) have emerged as a novel and promising category of materials with their fascinating properties and enormous potential. However, recent research endeavors have surged towards stabilizing Ag-based NCs, leading to innovative strategies like connecting cluster nodes with organic linkers to construct hierarchical structures, thus forming Ag-based cluster-assembled materials (CAMs). This approach not only enhances structural stability but also unveils unprecedented opportunities for CAMs, overcoming the limitations of individual Ag NCs. In this context, this review delves into the captivating realm of atomically precise nitrogen-based ligand bonded Ag(I)-based CAMs, providing insights into synthetic strategies, structure-properties relationships, and diverse applications. We navigate the challenges and advancements in integrating Ag(I) cluster nodes, bound by argentophilic interactions, into highly connected periodic frameworks with different dimensionalities using nitrogen-based linkers. Despite the inherent diversity among cluster nodes, Ag(I) CAMs demonstrate promising potential in sensing, catalysis, bio-imaging, and device fabrication, which all are discussed in this review. Therefore, gaining insight into the silver nanocluster assembly process will offer valuable information, which can enlighten the readers on the design and advancement of Ag(I) CAMs for state-of-the-art applications.

Abstract:Light and matter finely tuned Tuning the interactions between light and matter in semiconductors holds great promise for a host of exotic applications. But as the size of semiconducting devices is reduced, such interactions typically weaken, posing potential problems for the realization of the envisaged applications at the nanoscale. Zhang et al . now report a way of circumventing these limitations: they have produced colloidal particles that have a metallic core and a semiconducting shell, in which coupling of the plasmons in the metal to the excitons in the semiconductor is engineered to enhance light–matter interactions in the particle.
