Abstract:In recent years, the concept of 'hedging' has risen to prominence in international relations discourse. Hedging normally refers in that context to a national security or alignment strategy, undertaken by one state toward another, featuring a mix of cooperative and confrontational elements. It is often contrasted with balancing or bandwagoning, concepts developed during the Cold War era to depict the alternative strategies of resisting or accommodating a mighty or menacing great power. The idea of hedging arose as scholars examined the novel dynamics of international politics in the post-Cold War period and found prevailing theoretical approaches inadequate.

Abstract:Conflicts and tensions among major powers are often seen as clashes of interests between entities with significant influence. Nevertheless, from a historiographical standpoint, one would challenge the validity of such a simplistic view. The themes of nations that have to be considered full are undeniably formed by comprehensive historical and cultural components. Hence, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate cultural disparities to have a comprehensive understanding of interstate conflicts. This research uses case studies and qualitative methodologies to conduct a comparative analysis of the ideologies and national value identities that underlie Chinese-American interactions during the last decade. It focuses on the cultural distinctions inherited from China and the United States in order to get a deeper understanding of these connections. This research posits that the concept of democracy is firmly ingrained in the cultural and political fabric of these societies, giving rise to divergent ideologies. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that the cultural aspects of a country significantly influence its political evolution.
Philippine hedging strategy from the perspective of neoclassical realism

Abstract:As the main diplomatic strategy of the Philippines towards China, the hedging strategy has been practiced for a long time. In recent years, with the acceleration of Sino-American Geopolitical Competition, as well as the transfer of power in the Asia Pacific region, Southeast Asian countries are facing new strategic decision-making pressure. From the perspective of neoclassical realism, systemic pressure is transmitted through internal factors within a country, thereby determining diplomatic strategy. For the Philippines, the systemic pressure brought about by the Sino-U.S. competition serves as the independent variable, while the domestic security and economic development needs of the Philippines serve as intervention variables, jointly influencing diplomatic strategy. Through analysis, it can be seen that in the new stage of the Sino-U.S. competition, the hedging strategy of the Philippines has changed. During the Duterte period, the Philippines implemented a friendly strategy towards China of "military proximity to the United States and economic contact with China". After Marcos Jr. came to power, there was a trend of partial checks and balances in the Philippines' policy toward China. Overall, it still shows a major country balance orientation and will maintain this characteristic in the short term.

Abstract:This study presents the strategic hedging framework as a way to trace the determinants of the foreign policies of hedging states. We use the case of Chinese energy security strategy in the Middle East as an illustrative case study. It first uses four criteria to establish that China’s energy security strategy in the Middle East is a strong example of strategic hedging behaviour. Then it examines the impact of oil production in the Middle East countries on the growth of Chinese economic relationships with these countries. The results of this study show clearly that oil production plays an important role in the Sino-Middle East relations. We find a positive relationship between oil production in Middle East countries, on the one hand, and the distribution and growth of China’s trade and investment with these countries, on the other hand. These results confirm that strategic hedging behaviour leads to developing China’s economic relations with the oil-producing countries in order to cover its growing needs for energy to support its economic growth. This article represents the first attempt to trace the impact of strategic hedging behaviour on the foreign policies of hedging states. Thus, it contributes to the support of the strategic hedging framework as a new theory in international relations.

Abstract:It is widely claimed that secondary states across East Asia are not purely balancing or bandwagoning, but rather hedging between the United States and China by combining policies of economic and political engagement with risk management. We argue that hedging behavior should not include costless activities that do not require states to face trade-offs in their security choices. We redefine hedging as signaling that generates ambiguity over the extent of a secondary state's shared security interests with great powers. This definition returns the focus to security relationships and better accounts for the trade-off between autonomy and alignment. Based on this definition, we argue that hedging occurs in far narrower (but arguably more interesting) circumstances than is widely believed. Many Asian states have existing treaty alliances with the United States or major territorial conflicts with China, creating path dependencies that reinforce balancing behavior rather than hedging. We therefore clarify cross-national variation in state behavior and contribute to the larger research project on regional responses to China's rise.

Abstract:Since 2020, the rising economic competition and political rivalries have become intensive and austere between the United States and China. The formation of new global economic and political orders have started to establish a new era gradually under a USA-China hegemonic contest. As a consequence, Asian states have been enforced and reluctant to face the escalating and reshaping regional orders amid the USA-China power rivalry in the new millennium. There are three important parts emphasized for this special issue. One, the research approach will be based on the integration of neoclassic realism and a strategic triangle. Two, the strategic choice of small states toward a China-USA power rivalry intends to apply balancing, bandwagoning, and hedging strategies. The last, involves conducting a research framework of small state's responses and strategies on the basis of hedging governance.

Abstract:Abstract Given the limits of the prevailing hedging account for Seoul’s puzzling behavior that is in conformity with the interests of its adversary (i.e. North Korea) and potential threat (i.e. China) rather than those of its principal ally (i.e. the United States) and security cooperation partner (i.e. Japan), this article emphasizes the impact of the progressive ideology on Seoul’s security policy. In doing so, it calls for attention to a domestic source of ideology in explaining the security behaviors of a secondary state, which is under-researched and thus is poorly understood.

Dual and Single Hedging Strategy: a Novel Comparison from the Direct and Cross Hedging Perspective

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to deeply study and compare the dual and single hedging strategy, from the direct and cross hedging perspective.Design/methodology/approachThe authors not only first consider the dual hedge of integrated risks in this oil prices and foreign exchange rates setting but also make a novel comparison between the dual and single hedging strategy from a direct and cross hedging perspective. In total, six econometric models (to conduct one-step-ahead out-of-sample rolling estimation of the optimal hedge ratio) and two hedging performance criteria are employed in two different hedging backgrounds (direct and cross hedging).FindingsResults show that in the direct hedging background, a dual hedge cannot outperform the single hedge. But in the cross dual hedging setting, a dual hedge performs much better, possibly because the dual hedge brings different levels of advantages and disadvantages in the two different settings and the superiority of the dual hedge is more obvious in the cross dual hedging setting.Originality/valueThe existing literature that deals with oil prices and foreign exchange rates mostly concentrates on their relationship and comovements, while the dual hedge of integrated risks in this setting remains underresearched. Besides, the existing literature that deals with dual hedge gets its conclusions only based on a single specific background (direct or cross hedging) and lacks deeper investigation. In this paper, the authors expand the width and depth of the existing literature. Results and implications are revealing.

Abstract:How do autocracies survive? We argue that autocrats pursue a two-step strategy of autocratic hedging to ward off international pressure, diminish the power of domestic rivals, and consolidate their positions. First, autocrats who successfully "hedge" against critics do this by seeking rebalancers, such as firms or foreign leaders, who can redirect capital towards the autocrat's economy and break apart coalitional challengers. Second, autocrats use inducements, ambiguity, and mass mobilization to manipulate international conditions in their favor to avoid isolation and maintain legitimacy. Drawing on interviews in the field and secondary research, we illustrate our concept of autocratic hedging using the Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte (2016-2022) and Hungary's Viktor Orbán (2010-). Going beyond the existing literature that focuses on how autocrats stifle domestic pressure or use institutional features of the regime to stay in power, we develop an interactive framework that shows how autocratic hedging has allowed some rulers to place international capital in the service of the autocrat's power consolidation. Furthermore, most studies explain autocratic survival by using the state as the unit of analysis. In contrast, this article finds that multiple levels of interaction among rulers, firms, domestic constituencies, and foreign leaders matter to autocratic hedging and survival.

Abstract:The way people conduct business negotiations has altered immensely over the past decades to adapt to the ongoing changes in business environment. Innovative strategies have been orchestrated to overcome the challenges as well as meet the prerequisite requirements of contemporary businesses. The ultimate goal of such effective strategies is the maintenance of courteous relations among the negotiators and the achievement of a mutually beneficial outcome. In this respect, vague language or fussy language is regarded as a sui generis negotiation strategy that is prevalently exploited by negotiators with the intention to make the communication process smooth, polite and cooperative. Vagueness in a language is expressed through hedges, the semantic and pragmatic features of which are inextricably linked. The scope of this research shapes a profound pragmalinguistic analysis of hedges, which engender divergent negotiation strategies (detachment, agreement, complimenting, vagueness, etc.), its functions and roles in business negotiations. In addition to its linguistic significance, hedging is a widespread practice in a risk management strategy to offset losses against the risk and protect the investments. Obviously, on both occasions, business people pursue the following goals: at least reduce the chances of failure or minimize further complications, and, at most, obtain the desired result.
Financial Hedging and Competitive Strategy for Value-Maximizing Firms under Quantity Competition

Abstract:Inspired by the growing use of financial hedging among competitive firms nowadays, we develop a game-theoretical model to investigate the problem of applying financial hedging to improve a firm’s competitive strategy. A distinctive setting of the model is that the firm value is a concave function of the firm profit, which is consistent with the empirical evidences in finance literature. After proving the unique existence of the Nash equilibrium, we examine the effects of financial hedging on the equilibrium and yield some novel results. In particular, our analysis suggests that in a competitive market, financial hedging is not just to protect a firm’s bottom line; perhaps more importantly, effective financial hedging schemes can help increase the firm value by boosting the firm’s production, raising the market share, and improving its profitability.

Abstract:This paper studies the spatial-temporal hedging coordination problem. In the prefabricated housing production, the heavy double handling cost is the major reason that causes profit loss of project manager. The spatial-temporal method is capable of mitigating this double handling cost by reducing assembly time uncertainty and on-site congestion probability substantially. However, adopting hedging methods adds extra cost and pressure to the adopters. To encourage the building contractor who makes the temporal hedging decision to choose a larger assembly time hedging (ATH) amount, a hedging effort-sharing (HES) mechanism is proposed. In this research, we built an analytical model to investigate how HES mechanism affects spatial-temporal hedging decisions, the performance of the building contractor, project manager as well as the whole supply chain. Three scenarios with fixed HES terms under decentralized setting are examined: (I) Nash model, (II) Building contractor led Stackelberg model, and (III) Project manager led Stackelberg model. Closed-form results regarding the optimal spatial-temporal hedging decisions are obtained. Besides, we derive the threshold of the HES terms, under which a win-win coordination can be achieved. Furthermore, an integrated setting with negotiable HES terms is explored. We derive the optimal values of HES terms, which incents the individual optimal spatial-temporal hedging decisions identical with that obtained in the centralized setting. By conducting numerical studies, it is found that a higher site congestion probability and a lower demand uncertainty encourage the project manager to share more ATH effort, while a lower unit ATH cost and higher site space hedging effort-sharing rate entice the building contractor to burden more ATH effort. Surprisingly, in the proposed HES mechanism, the building contractor's profit is increasing in site congestion probability and the project manager's profit increases in the demand uncertainty.
Hedging strategies and minimal variance portfolios for European and exotic options in a Levy market

Abstract:This paper presents hedging strategies for European and exotic options in a Levy market. By applying Taylor's Theorem, dynamic hedging portfolios are con- structed under different market assumptions, such as the existence of power jump assets or moment swaps. In the case of European options or baskets of European options, static hedging is implemented. It is shown that perfect hedging can be achieved. Delta and gamma hedging strategies are extended to higher moment hedging by investing in other traded derivatives depending on the same underlying asset. This development is of practical importance as such other derivatives might be readily available. Moment swaps or power jump assets are not typically liquidly traded. It is shown how minimal variance portfolios can be used to hedge the higher order terms in a Taylor expansion of the pricing function, investing only in a risk-free bank account, the underlying asset and potentially variance swaps. The numerical algorithms and performance of the hedging strategies are presented, showing the practical utility of the derived results.

Abstract:This paper explores how South Korea and India have taken positions between the United States and the People’s Republic of China over diverse foreign policy issues. By adopting dual engagement and strategic ambiguity as hedging strategies, both regional powers reduce their vulnerability to the influence and pressure of the two great powers. Thanks to their strategic importance and prominence in regional politics enhanced by such strategies, South Korea and India can independently pursue their foreign policy preferences to a great extent. The analysis of voting behavior of these regional powers in the United Nations General Assembly between 1991 and 2018 confirms our expectations.

Abstract:We develop a positive theory of the hedging behavior of value-maximizing corporations. We treat hedging by corporations simply as one part of the firm's financing decisions. We examine (1) taxes, (2) contracting costs, and (3) the impact of hedging policy on the firm's investment decisions as explanations of the observed wide diversity of hedging practices among large, widely-held corporations. Our theory provides answers to the questions: (1) why some firms hedge and others do not; (2) why firms hedge some risks but not others; and (3) why some firms hedge their accounting risk exposure while others hedge their economic value.

Abstract:This paper discusses Indonesia's hedging policies towards China, especially in the South China Sea issue. In line with a free and active foreign policy principle, Indonesia seeks a middle way by establishing cooperation with the United States and China, two major powers with different interests in the South China Sea issue. This research is qualitative research using a case study approach. In this study, I carried out two data collection techniques, namely interviews and literature studies. The political elite decides to hedge within a government, so it is motivated more internally than externally. Hedging is a tactic that demands a low commitment to a country that does not represent friend or foe. However, in line with the increasing competition between the two, Indonesia's hedging strategy may fail due to external pressure to join one side. Therefore, in maximizing the hedging strategy, Indonesia seems to need to increase its defense capabilities to increase its bargaining position and deter threats from external parties

Abstract:We propose a new `hedged' Monte-Carlo (HMC) method to price financial derivatives, which allows to determine simultaneously the optimal hedge. The inclusion of the optimal hedging strategy allows one to reduce the financial risk associated with option trading, and for the very same reason reduces considerably the variance of our HMC scheme as compared to previous methods. The explicit accounting of the hedging cost naturally converts the objective probability into the `risk-neutral' one. This allows a consistent use of purely historical time series to price derivatives and obtain their residual risk. The method can be used to price a large class of exotic options, including those with path dependent and early exercise features.

Abstract:In this paper, we argue that, once the costs of maintaining the hedging portfolio are properly taken into account, semi-static portfolios should more properly be thought of as separate classes of derivatives, with non-trivial, model-dependent payoff structures. We derive new integral representations for payoffs of exotic European options in terms of payoffs of vanillas, different from Carr-Madan representation, and suggest approximations of the idealized static hedging/replicating portfolio using vanillas available in the market. We study the dependence of the hedging error on a model used for pricing and show that the variance of the hedging errors of static hedging portfolios can be sizably larger than the errors of variance-minimizing portfolios. We explain why the exact semi-static hedging of barrier options is impossible for processes with jumps, and derive general formulas for variance-minimizing semi-static portfolio. We show that hedging using vanillas only leads to larger errors than hedging using vanillas and first touch digitals. In all cases, efficient calculations of the weights of the hedging portfolios are in the dual space using new efficient numerical methods for calculation of the Wiener-Hopf factors and Laplace-Fourier inversion.

Abstract:In a discrete-time market, we study model-independent superhedging, while the semi-static superhedging portfolio consists of {\it three} parts: static positions in liquidly traded vanilla calls, static positions in other tradable, yet possibly less liquid, exotic options, and a dynamic trading strategy in risky assets under certain constraints. By considering the limit order book of each tradable exotic option and employing the Monge-Kantorovich theory of optimal transport, we establish a general superhedging duality, which admits a natural connection to convex risk measures. With the aid of this duality, we derive a model-independent version of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing. The notion "finite optimal arbitrage profit", weaker than no-arbitrage, is also introduced. It is worth noting that our method covers a large class of Delta constraints as well as Gamma constraint.
