Abstract:We discuss forward jet production data recently published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. We review how several Monte-Carlo models compare to the data. QCD calculations based on the BFKL formalism and on fixed NLO perturbation theory with and without resolved virtual photons are described.

Abstract:We examine the accelerating 'obesity epidemic' in the US from the perspective of generalized language-of-thought arguments relating a cognitive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to an embedding context of structured psychosocial stress. From a Rate Distortion perspective, the obesity epidemic is an image of ratcheting social pathology -- indexed by massive, policy-driven, deurbanization and deindustrialization -- impressed upon the bodies of American adults and children. The resulting pattern of developmental disorder, while stratified by expected divisions of class and ethnicity, is nonetheless relentlessly engulfing even affluent majority populations.

Abstract:Studies on the structure of the photon are presented by means of the extraction of a leading order effective parton distribution in the photon and measurements of inclusive jet differential cross sections in photoproduction. Abstract:The production of jets is studied in collisions of virtual photons, gamma*-p and gamma*-gamma*, specifically for applications at HERA and LEP2. Photon flux factors are convoluted with matrix elements involving either direct or resolved photons and, for the latter, with parton distributions of the photon. Special emphasis is put on the range of uncertainty in the modeling of the resolved component. The resulting model is compared with existing data.

Abstract:Predictions from a new next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for direct and resolved photoproduction of one and two jets are compared to simulated HERA data. We propose a method to match experimental and theoretical jet definitions and observe a reduced dependence on jet definitions and hadronization corrections at larger transverse energies. From the irreducible uncertainty, we estimate the maximum benefit that can be obtained from increased luminosity to constrain the structure of the photon and the proton.

High-E_T Inclusive Jet Cross Sections in Photoproduction at HERA

Abstract:Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+ p --> e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < eta(jet) < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the eta-phi plane, R=1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dsigma/deta(jet) above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R=1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high eta(jet) and low E_T(jet). The measured cross sections for jets defined with R=0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range of eta(jet) and E_T(jet). The inclusive jet cross section for E_T(jet) > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

Abstract:Many important QCD tests with jets and prompt photons have been performed with the experiments H1 and ZEUS at the HERA ep collider. This contribution focuses on results from jet and prompt photon photoproduction. In particular, the concept of resolved photon interactions and various jet cross sections and their sensitivity to the photon (and proton) PDFs will be discussed. In addition, recent results from prompt photon production will be shown. Finally results on multi-parton interactions and the underlying event will be presented.

Abstract:The production of dijets is measured in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector at DESY in the years 2003-2007. Diffractive events are selected by requiring a gap in the rapidity distribution of the hadronic systen, where no particles are produced. Two jets are selected with transverse momenta in the hadronic-centre-of-mass system larger than 4 and 5.5GeV, respectively. Cross sections are measured single- and doubledifferentially in various kinematic quantities. The data are found to be in good agreement with NLO QCD calculations based on diffractive parton densities determined frominclusive diffractive cross section measurements.

Abstract:The no-longer-eclipsing system SS Lac in the young open cluster NGC 7209 has been recently announced to show a constant radial velocity. Puzzled by this finding, we have monitored the system during 1997 obtaining 24 Echelle+CCD spectra over 8 orbital revolutions. Our spectra reveal a nice orbital motion with periodic splitting and merging of spectral lines from both components. An accurate orbit has been derived, together with individual masses of the stars. SS Lac presents a moderately eccentric orbit and a probably full synchronization between stellar rotation and orbital revolution.

Abstract:In this work we investigate the effects of the primordial magnetic fields on cosmic microwave background anisotropies (CMB). Based on cosmological magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations we calculate the CMB anisotropy spectra and polarization induced by fluid fluctuations (Alfvén modes) generated by primordial magnetic fields. The strongest effect on the CMB spectra comes from the transition epoch from a turbulent regime to a viscous regime. The balance between magnetic and kinetic energy until the onset of the viscous regime provides a one to one relation between the comoving coherence length $L$ and the comoving magnetic field strength $B$, such as $L \sim 30 (B/10^{-9}{\rm G})^3 \rm pc$. The resulting CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies are somewhat different from the ones previously obtained by using linear perturbation theory. Our calculation gives a constraint on the magnetic field strength in the intermediate scale of CMB observations. Upper limits are set by WMAP and BOOMERANG results for comoving magnetic field strength of $B < 28 \rm nG$ with a comoving coherence length of $L > 0.7 \rm Mpc$ for the most extreme case, or $B < 30 \rm nG$ and $L> 0.8 \rm Mpc$ for the most conservative case.

Abstract:We calculate several differential distributions for diffractive dijets production in ep→e′jet jetp in the perturbative QCD dipole approach using off diagonal unintegrated gluon distributions (generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions, GTMDs). Different models from the literature are used. We concentrate on the contribution from exclusive qq ̄ dijets. Results of our calculations are compared to H1 and ZEUS data, including specific experimental cuts in our calculations. In general, except for one GTMD, our results are below the HERA data. The considered mechanism is expected to gives a sizeable contribution to the ZEUS data, while it is negligible in the kinematics of the H1 measurement. This is in contrast to recent results from the literature where the normalization was adjusted to some selected distributions of the H1 collaboration and no agreement with other observables was checked. The ZEUS data provide stricter limitations on the GTMDs than the H1 data. We conclude, based on comparison to different observables, that the calculated cross sections are only a small fraction of the measured ones which contain probably also processes with pomeron remnant. Alternatively one could try to explain the experimental data by inclusion of qq ̄g component of the photon wave function. We present also azimuthal correlations between the sum and the difference of dijet transverse momenta. Abstract:The azimuthal correlation angle, $\Delta\phi$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < \theta_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < \eta_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $d\sigma/d\Delta\phi$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $\Delta\phi \rightarrow \pi$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering.

Abstract:Recent results on inclusive D^0 and D^{*+-} production in deeply inelastic ep scattering at sqrt(s)=301 GeV are summarized. The data have been collected by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA. The total and the differential cross sections are discussed in the framework of LO and NLO QCD predictions. The data exhibit clear evidence for boson gluon fusion dominating open heavy flavor production in the kinematic range currently explored at HERA. The measurements of F_2^{cc}(x,Q^2) at small Bjorken x are presented. The prospects for future analyses of open charm and beauty production including detector upgrades and anticipated high luminosities are investigated.

Abstract:Jet substructure and differential cross sections for jets produced in the photoproduction and deep inelastic ep scattering regimes have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1. The substructure of jets has been studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity for jets with transverse energies Et(jet) > 17 GeV. The data are well described by the QCD calculations. The jet shape and subjet multiplicity are used to tag gluon- and quark-initiated jets. Jet cross sections as functions of Et(jet), jet pseudorapidity, the jet-jet scattering angle, dijet invariant mass and the fraction of the photon energy carried by the dijet system are presented for gluon- and quark-tagged jets. The data exhibit the behaviour expected from the underlying parton dynamics. A value of alphas(Mz) of alphas(Mz) = 0.1176 +-0.0009(stat.) -0.0026 +0.0009 (exp.) -0.0072 +0.0091 (th.) was extracted from the measurements of jet shapes in deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract:We review next-to-leading order calculations of one- and two-jet production in ep collisions at HERA for photon virtualities in the range 1<Q^2<100 GeV^2. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions with the Snowmass jet definition. The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is studied. We discuss the comparison with recent H1 data of the dijet rate and differential dijet cross sections with special attention to the region, in which two jets have equal transverse momenta.
