We first prove the narrow region principle and maximal principle for antisymmetric functions, under the condition that u u is uniformly bounded, which weaken the general decay condition u → 0 u\to 0 at infinity. Then, the monotonicity of positive solutions is established using the method of moving planes.

Abstract:For any subcritical index of regularity s > 3/2, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space H s × H s−1 with certain angular regularity. The lifespan is known to be sharp in general. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space . In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension n ≥ 2 and the order of nonlinearity p ≥ 3.

We consider generalized solutions of the Perona–Malik equation in dimension one, defined as all possible limits of solutions to the semidiscrete approximation in which derivatives with respect to the space variable are replaced by difference quotients. Our first result is a pathological example in which the initial data converge strictly as bounded variation functions, but strict convergence is not preserved for all positive times and, in particular, many basic quantities, such as the supremum or the total variation, do not pass to the limit. Nevertheless, in our second result we show that all our generalized solutions satisfy some of the properties of classical smooth solutions, namely, the maximum principle and the monotonicity of the total variation. The verification of the counterexample relies on a comparison result with suitable sub-/super-solutions. The monotonicity results are proved for a more general class of evolution curves, that we call [math]-evolutions.

Abstract:In this paper we show the existence of strictly monotone heteroclinic type solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in cylinders. The motivation of this construction is twofold: first, it implies the existence of an entire bounded solution of a semilinear equation without critical points which is not one-dimensional. Second, this gives an example of a bounded stationary solution for the 2D Euler equations without stagnation points which is not a shear flow, completing previous results of Hamel and Nadirashvili. The proof uses a minimization technique together with a truncation argument, and a limit procedure.

Abstract:We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-\Delta_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-\Delta_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.

Abstract:This paper concerns positive solutions to the boundary value problems of the scalar field equation in the half space with a Sobolev supercritical nonlinearity and an inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, admitting a nontrivial nonnegative Radon measure as the boundary data. Under a suitable integrability assumption on the boundary data and the Joseph–Lundgren subcritical condition on the nonlinear term, we give a complete classification of the existence/nonexistence of a positive solution with respect to the size of the boundary data. Furthermore, we give a result on the existence of multiple positive solutions via bifurcation theory.

Abstract:We investigate the monotonicity of the minimal period of the periodic solutions of some quasilinear differential equations involving the $p$-Laplace operator. The monotonicity is obtained as a function of a Hamiltonian energy in two cases. We first extend to the case $p\ge2$ classical results for $p=2$ due to Chow and Wang, and Chicone. Then we consider a differential equation associated with a fundamental interpolation inequality in Sobolev spaces. In that case, we generalize to $p\ge2$ a recent result due to Benguria, Depassier and~Loss when $p=2$.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to show how some monotonicity methods related with the subdifferential of suitable convex functions and its extensions as m-accretive operators in Banach spaces lead to new and unexpected results showing, for instance, the continuous and monotone dependence of solutions with the respect to the data (and coefficients) of the problem. In this way, this paper offers `a common roof' to several methods and results concerning monotone and non-monotone frameworks. Besides to present here some new results, this paper offers also a peculiar survey to some topics which attracted the attention of many specialists in elliptic and parabolic nonlinear partial differential equations in the last years under the important influence of Haim Brezis. To be more precise, the model problem under consideration concerns to positive solutions of a general class of doubly nonlinear diffusion parabolic equations with some sub-homogeneous forcing terms.
A rigorous integrator and global existence for higher-dimensional semilinear parabolic PDEs via semigroup theory

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a general constructive method to compute solutions of initial value problems of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations via semigroup theory and computer-assisted proofs. Once a numerical candidate for the solution is obtained via a finite dimensional projection, Chebyshev series expansions are used to solve the linearized equations about the approximation from which a solution map operator is constructed. Using the solution operator (which exists from semigroup theory), we define an infinite dimensional contraction operator whose unique fixed point together with its rigorous bounds provide the local inclusion of the solution. Applying this technique for multiple time steps leads to constructive proofs of existence of solutions over long time intervals. As applications, we study the 3D/2D Swift-Hohenberg, where we combine our method with explicit constructions of trapping regions to prove global existence of solutions of initial value problems converging asymptotically to nontrivial equilibria. A second application consists of the 2D Ohta-Kawasaki equation, providing a framework for handling derivatives in nonlinear terms.

Some qualitative and quantitative properties of weak solutions to mixed anisotropic and nonlocal quasilinear elliptic and doubly nonlinear parabolic equations

Abstract:This article is twofold. In the first part of the article, we consider Brezis-Oswald problem involving the mixed anisotropic and nonlocal $p$-Laplace operator and establish existence, uniqueness, boundedness and strong maximum principle. Further, for some mixed anisotropic and nonlocal $p$-Laplace type equations, we obtain Sturmian comparison theorem, prove some comparsion results, nonexistence results, establish weighted Hardy type inequality and study a system of singular mixed anisotropic and nonlocal $p$-Laplace equations. One of the key ingredient is the combination of Picone identity already available in the separate local and nonlocal cases. In the second part of the article, we are mainly concerned with regularity estimates. To this end, in the elliptic setting, we establish weak Harnack inequality and semicontinuity results. Further, we consider a class of doubly nonlinear mixed anisotropic and nonlocal equations and prove semicontinuity results and pointwise behavior of solutions. These are based on suitable energy estimates and De Giorgi type lemmas and expansion of positivity. Finally, we establish various energy estimates which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider initial–boundary value problems for homogeneous parabolic systems with coefficients satisfying the double Dini condition with zero initial conditions in a semibounded plane domain with nonsmooth lateral boundary. The method of boundary integral equations is used to prove a theorem on the unique classical solvability of such problems in the space of functions that are continuous together with their first spatial derivative in the closure of the domain. An integral representation of the obtained solutions is given. It is shown that the condition for the solvability of the posed problems considered in the paper is equivalent to the well-known complementarity condition.

Abstract:We present two methods to prove the strict monotonicity of the global branch of solutions of some PDEs in the L2 norm, and the uniqueness of the corresponding normalized ground states. We will first discuss the key ideas and ingredients of each method. Then, we will apply them to various classes of PDEs. Our approach is applicable to other operators, domains and nonlinearities provided that some hypotheses are satisfied. Our general methods are novel and self-contained, they provide two approaches that address the challenging uniqueness and strict monotonicity issues.

A theorem on unique classical solvability of these problems in the space of functions that are continuous and bounded together with their first spatial derivatives in the closure of the domain is proved by applying the boundary integral equation method. A representation of the resulting solutions in the form of vector single-layer potentials is given.

Monotonicity of positive solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with mixed boundary conditions in triangles

Abstract:This paper investigates semilinear elliptic problems in planar triangles with Dirichlet conditions specified on one side of the boundary and Neumann conditions imposed on the remaining two sides. By employing moving plane method, we establish that the positive solution is monotone in the normal direction of the Dirichlet side when the Neumann vertex is non-obtuse. In the case where the Neumann vertex is obtuse, the positive solution is monotone in the normal direction of the longer Neumann side provided some technical conditions. Furthermore, this monotonicity property extends to the first mixed eigenfunction in triangles through continuity method via domain deformation. It is noteworthy that the maximum of the first positive eigenfunction in a triangle with mixed boundary conditions, consisting of two Neumann sides and one Dirichlet side, is uniquely located on the Neumann side with the greater length. This maximum point coincides with the Neumann vertex if and only if either the Neumann vertex is non-obtuse or the two Neumann sides have equal lengths. This result successfully resolves a specific problem posed within the Polymath project: Polymath7 research thread 1.

Abstract:(1) Background: This paper is devoted to the study of a class of semilinear initial boundary value problems of parabolic type. (2) Methods: We make use of fractional powers of analytic semigroups and the interpolation theory of compact linear operators due to Lions–Peetre. (3) Results: We give a functional analytic proof of the C2 compactness of a bounded regular solution orbit for semilinear parabolic problems with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. (4) Conclusions: As an application, we study the dynamics of a population inhabiting a strongly heterogeneous environment that is modeled by a class of diffusive logistic equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.
