Abstract:Instead of the infinitesimal extrinsic and intrinsic perturbations on strings, considered so far, we discuss the evolution and propagation of finite-amplitude perturbations. Those intrinsic perturbations may result in appearance of stable discontinuities similar to the shock waves.

Abstract:We consider scattering of elastic waves on parallel wedge dislocations in the geometric theory of defects or, equivalently, scattering of point particles and light rays on cosmic strings. Dislocations are described as torsion singularities located on parallel lines, and trajectories of phonons are assumed to be the corresponding extremals. Extremals are found for arbitrary distribution of the dislocations in the monopole, dipole, and quadrupole approximation and the scattering angle is obtained. Examples of continuous distribution of wedge and edge dislocations are considered. We have found that for deficit angles close to −2πa star located behind a cosmic string may have any even number of images, 2, 4, 6,… The close relationship between dislocations and conformal maps is elucidated in detail.

Abstract:This paper discusses aspects of the second order hyperbolic partial differential equation associated with the ideal lossless string under tension and it's relationship to two discrete models. These models are finite differencing in the time domain and digital waveguide models. It is known from the theory of partial differential operators that in general one has to expect the string to accumulate displacement as response to impulsive excitations. Discrete models should be expected to display comparable behavior. As a result it is shown that impulsive propagations can be interpreted as the difference of step functions and hence how the impulsive response can be seen as one case of the general integrating behavior of the string. Impulsive propagations come about in situations of time-symmetry whereas step-function occur as a result of time-asymmetry. The difference between the physical stability of the wave equation, which allows for unbounded growth in displacement, and computational stability, that requires bounded growth, is derived.

Abstract:Under a sufficiently large load, a solid material will flow via rearrangements, where particles change neighbors. Such plasticity is most easily described in the athermal, quasistatic limit of zero temperature and infinitesimal loading rate, where rearrangements occur only when the system becomes mechanically unstable. For disordered solids, the instabilities marking the onset of rearrangements have long been believed to be fold instabilities, in which an energy barrier disappears and the frequency of a normal mode of vibration vanishes continuously. Here, we report that there exists another, anomalous, type of instability caused by the breaking of a "stabilizing bond," whose removal creates an unstable vibrational mode. For commonly studied systems, such as those with harmonic finite-range interparticle interactions, such "discontinuous instabilities" are not only inevitable, they often dominate the modes of failure. Stabilizing bonds are a subset of all the bonds in the system and are prevalent in disordered solids generally. Although they do not trigger discontinuous instabilities in systems with vanishing stiffness at the interaction cutoff, they are, even in those cases, local indicators of incipient mechanical failure. They therefore provide an accurate structural predictor of instabilities not only of the discontinuous type but of the fold type as well.
Structural discontinuity as generalized strain and Fourier transform for discrete-continuous systems

Abstract:We consider a segmented structure, possibly connected with a continuous medium, as initially homogeneous, where discontinuities arise as localized strains induced by self-equilibrated localized actions. Under this formulation augmented by interface conditions, the linearized formulation remains valid. This approach eliminates the need for examining separate sections with subsequent conjugation. Only conditions related to the discontinuities should be satisfied, while the continuity in other respects preserves itself automatically. No obstacle remains for the continuous Fourier transform. For a uniform partitioning, the discrete transform is used together with the continuous one. We demonstrate the technique by obtaining the Floquet wave dispersive relations with their dependence upon interface stiffness. To this end, we briefly consider the flexural wave in the segmented beam on Winkler's foundation, the gravity wave in a plate (also segmented) on deep water and the Floquet-Rayleigh wave in such a plate on an elastic half-space. Besides, we present the wave equations developed for an elastic medium with discontinuities.

Abstract:Consider a long chain of coupled vibrating strings, where a stabilizer is installed at each internal node and perhaps also at a boundary point. The exponential stability of the stabilizers’ arrangement for this large dynamic structure will be determined. Through a careful transformation of the coupled wave equations for this structure into an equivalent hyperbolic system and analysis of the eigendeterminant, it will be proven that the energy of the system decays uniformly exponentially if there is a stabilizer installed at a boundary point. If the stabilizers are installed only at internal nodes, it will be proven that the energy may decay either uniformly exponentially or nonuniformly, or may not decay at all, depending on the different wave speeds and the stabilizers– arrangement. All possible outcomes have been classified.

Abstract:We confront the problem of giving a fundamental definition to perturbative string theory in spacetimes with totally compact space (taken to be a torus for simplicity, though the nature of the problem is very general) and non-compact time. Due to backreaction induced by the presence of even a single string quantum, the usual formulation of perturbative string theory in a fixed classical background is infrared-divergent at all subleading orders in the string coupling, and needs to be amended. The problem can be seen as a closed string analogue of D0-brane recoil under an impact by closed strings (a situation displaying extremely similar infrared divergences). Inspired by the collective coordinate treatment of the D0-brane recoil, whereby the translational modes of the D0-brane are introduced as explicit dynamical variables in the path integral, we construct a similar formalism for the case of string-induced gravitational backreaction, in which the spatially uniform modes of the background fields on the compact space are quantized explicitly. The formalism can equally well be seen as an ultraviolet completion of a minisuperspace quantum cosmology with string degrees of freedom. We consider the amplitudes for the universe to have two cross-sections with specified spatial properties and string contents, and show (at the first non-trivial order) that they are finite within our formalism.

The origin of strings and rings in the atomic dynamics of disordered systems

Abstract:It has long been believed that the atomic dynamics in disordered structures, such as undercooled liquids and pre-melted interfaces, are characterized by collective atomic rearrangements in the form of quasi-one-dimensional chains of atomic displacements (strings) and their closed forms (rings). Here, we show by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that strings do not form by a single collective event. Instead, they are simply MD trajectories of propagating local density perturbations, which we call densitons. The atoms on this trajectory are physically indistinguishable from their environments except for the moving head of the string (densiton). A densiton migrates by either single-atom jumps or a concerted rearrangement of 2-3 atoms. The simulations reveal a remarkable similarity between the strings in disordered and crystalline structures, in which the densitons localize into point defects. This work calls for a significant reinterpretation of the string concept and instead proposes a densiton model of the atomic dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we initiate the study of wave propagation in a recently proposed mathematical model for stretch-limited elastic strings. We consider the longitudinal motion of a simple class of uniform, semi-infinite, stretch-limited strings under no external force with finite end held fixed and prescribed tension at the infinite end. We study a class of motions such that the string has one inextensible segment, where the local stretch is maximized, and one extensible segment. The equations of motion reduce to a simple and novel shock front problem in one spatial variable for which we prove existence and uniqueness of local-in-time solutions for appropriate initial data. We then prove the orbital asymptotic stability of an explicit two-parameter family of piece-wise constant stretched motions. If the prescribed tension at the infinite end is increasing in time, our results provide an open set of initial data launching motions resulting in the string becoming fully inextensible and tension blowing up in finite time.

Non-Relativistic Strings in Expanding Spacetime

Abstract:We obtain a non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariant string action as a special limit of the Nambu-Goto action in an FLRW background. We use this action to study non-relativistic string dynamics in an expanding universe and construct an analytic model describing the macroscopic properties of non-relativistic string networks. The non-relativistic constraint equations allow arbitrarily small string velocities and thus a `frustrated' equation of state for non-interacting strings can be obtained without the need of a velocity damping mechanism. Assuming that colliding string segments reconnect by exchange of partners, non-relativistic string networks exhibit scaling behaviour, but with enhanced energy densities due to the reduced average string velocity. Non-relativistic string networks can be relevant in several contexts in condensed matter physics and cosmology.

Abstract:Two-dimensional maps with discontinuities are considered. It is shown that, in the presence of discontinuities, the essential spectrum of the transfer operator is large whenever it acts on a Banach space with norm that is stronger than $L^\infty$ or $BV$. Three classes of examples are introduced and studied, both expanding and partially expanding. In two dimensions there is complication due to the geometry of the discontinuities, an issue not present in the one-dimensional case and which is explored in this work.

Abstract:The geometric properties of spacetimes representing expanding impulsive gravitational waves, propagating on a flat background and generated by snapped cosmic strings, are studied. The construction of the line element is reviewed, and suitable forms of the string-generating complex mapping are derived for various configurations such as previously studied examples of a pair of snapping cosmic strings. Moreover, these mappings are related to the topology of the flat half-space in front of the wave. Their understanding seems to be crucial for further analysis of the global geometry, the relation between half-spaces on both sides of the impulse, and the physical interpretation of, in principle, observable effects. The spacetime structure is connected with the motion of free test particles crossing the impulse, where the recent results allow us to discuss their displacement and induced velocities that are caused by the interaction with the expanding gravitational impulsive wave.

From Black Strings to Fundamental Strings: Non-uniformity and Phase Transitions

Abstract:We discuss the transition between black strings and fundamental strings in the presence of a compact dimension, $\mathbb{S}^1_z$. In particular, we study the Horowitz-Polchinski effective field theory in $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$, with a reduction on the Euclidean time circle $\mathbb{S}_\tau^1$. The classical solution of this theory describes a bound state of self-gravitating strings, known as a ``string star'', in Lorentzian spacetime. By analyzing non-uniform perturbations to the uniform solution, we identify the critical mass at which the string star becomes unstable towards non-uniformity along the spatial circle (i.e., Gregory-Laflamme instability) and determine the order of the associated phase transition. For $3\le d<4$, we argue that at the critical mass, the uniform string star can transition into a localized black hole. More generally, we describe the sequence of transitions from a large uniform black string as its mass decreases, depending on the number of dimensions $d$. Additionally, using the $SL(2)_k/U(1)$ model in string theory, we show that for sufficiently large $d$, the uniform black string is stable against non-uniformity before transitioning into fundamental strings. We also present a novel solution that exhibits double winding symmetry breaking in the asymptotically $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{S}^1_\tau\times\mathbb{S}^1_z$ Euclidean spacetime.

Abstract:Confinement prohibits isolation of color charges, e.g., quarks, in nature via a process called string breaking: the separation of two charges results in an increase in the energy of a color flux, visualized as a string, connecting those charges. Eventually, creating additional charges is energetically favored, hence breaking the string. Such a phenomenon can be probed in simpler models, including quantum spin chains, enabling enhanced understanding of string-breaking dynamics. A challenging task is to understand how string breaking occurs as time elapses, in an out-of-equilibrium setting. This work establishes the phenomenology of dynamical string breaking induced by a gradual increase of string tension over time. It, thus, goes beyond instantaneous quench processes and enables tracking the real-time evolution of strings in a more controlled setting. We focus on domain-wall confinement in a family of quantum Ising chains. Our results indicate that, for sufficiently short strings and slow evolution, string breaking can be described by the transition dynamics of a two-state quantum system akin to a Landau-Zener process. For longer strings, a more intricate spatiotemporal pattern emerges: the string breaks by forming a superposition of bubbles (domains of flipped spins of varying sizes), which involve highly excited states. We finally demonstrate that string breaking driven only by quantum fluctuations can be realized in the presence of sufficiently long-ranged interactions. This work holds immediate relevance for studying string breaking in quantum-simulation experiments.

Fingering Instability of Dislocations and Related Defects

Abstract:We identify a fundamental morphological instability of mobile dislocations in crystals and related line defects. A positive gradient in the local driving force along the direction of defect motion destabilizes long-wavelength vibrational modes, producing a ``fingering'' pattern. The minimum unstable wavelength scales as the inverse square root of the force gradient. We demonstrate the instability's onset in simulations of a screw dislocation in Al (via molecular dynamics) and of a vortex in a 3-d XY ``rotator'' model.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spacetime containing both small-scale structures (wiggles) and spatial dislocation, forming a wiggly cosmic dislocation. We study the combined effects of these features on the dynamics of massive and massless particles. Our results show that while wiggles alone lead to bound states and dislocation introduces angular momentum corrections, their coupling produces more complex effects, influencing both particle motion and wave propagation. Notably, this coupling significantly modifies radial solutions and eigenvalues, with the direction of motion or propagation becoming a critical factor in determining the outcomes. Numerical solutions reveal detailed aspects of particle dynamics as functions of dislocation and string parameters, including plots of trajectories, radial probability densities, and energy levels. These findings deepen our understanding of how a wiggly cosmic dislocation shapes particle dynamics, suggesting new directions for theoretical exploration in cosmological models.

Abstract:We consider non-stationary oscillations of an infinite string with time-varying tension. The string lies on the Winkler foundation with a point inhomogeneity (a concentrated spring of negative stiffness). In such a system with constant parameters (the string tension), under certain conditions a trapped mode of oscillation exists and is unique. Therefore, applying a non-stationary external excitation to this system can lead to the emergence of the string oscillations localized near the inhomogeneity. We provide an analytical description of non-stationary localized oscillations of the string with slowly time-varying tension using the asymptotic procedure based on successive application of two asymptotic methods, namely the method of stationary phase and the method of multiple scales. The obtained analytical results were verified by independent numerical calculations based on the finite difference method. The applicability of the analytical formulas was demonstrated for various types of external excitation and laws governing the varying tension. In particular, we have shown that in the case when the trapped mode frequency approaches zero, localized low-frequency oscillations with increasing amplitude precede the localized string buckling. The dependence of the amplitude of such oscillations on its frequency is more complicated in comparison with the case of a one degree of freedom system with time-varying stiffness.
